The Ubuntu 24.04 VPS template with Claude Code is the quickest way to run Claude Code on a remote Linux server: deploy the image, connect with SSH or the provider’s web console, authenticate with claude /login, and start a session with claude. Claude Code is already installed, so there is no separate package-install step. Once connected, change into your repository and Claude can read project files on demand; you do not upload the project separately.

What is the Claude Code VPS template?

It is a preconfigured Ubuntu 24.04 virtual private server image that includes Claude Code. The template removes the usual installation task, but it does not remove the need to provision a server, authenticate Claude Code, or secure the account and machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The session runs on the VPS rather than on your laptop. You reach it through an SSH client or a browser-based console supplied by your VPS dashboard. Your repository remains on the server’s storage, which is useful when you work from several computers or need a Linux environment that stays available independently of your local operating system.

The template is an infrastructure shortcut, not a special Claude model or a separate Claude subscription. Your account, organization policy, API arrangement, model access and usage limits still determine what Claude Code can do.

What do I need before deploying it?

Have these items ready before you create the server:

  • A VPS account with permission to create an Ubuntu 24.04 instance from the Claude Code template.
  • The server’s public IP address, shown after deployment.
  • An SSH client if you will connect from a terminal. Recent macOS, Linux and Windows installations normally include one; otherwise use the provider’s web console.
  • An Anthropic account, or an organization-provided API, Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI configuration, depending on how your team provisions Claude Code.
  • The repository already present on the VPS, or a plan to clone it after connecting.
  • A browser on the device where you will complete the authorization flow.

Keep the VPS credentials private. If several people need access, create separate operating-system accounts rather than sharing one root login, and give each person only the repository and permissions they require.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I deploy the Ubuntu 24.04 Claude Code template?

Choose the Ubuntu 24.04 image whose name indicates that Claude Code is included, select the required server size and region, and complete the deployment form. The exact labels and available sizes vary by provider, but the sequence is generally the same.

  1. Open the VPS creation page in your hosting dashboard.
  2. Select the Ubuntu 24.04 image with Claude Code pre-installed.
  3. Choose a region close to your users or source-control service, and select storage and memory appropriate for the repository and tools you will run.
  4. Set an administrator credential or SSH key as requested by the dashboard.
  5. Finish deployment and wait for the instance to receive a public IPv4 address.
  6. Copy the IP address and any generated login details into a password manager. Do not paste credentials into a project file or commit them to source control.

Deployment only creates the machine. Authentication with Claude and access to your code happen after the VPS is running.

How can I connect to the VPS?

SSH is the normal route for repeatable work; the browser console is a useful fallback when your local SSH client or network is unavailable.

Connect with SSH

From a terminal, run:

ssh root@[your-vps-ip]

Replace [your-vps-ip] with the address shown in the dashboard. If the provider gave you a different initial username, use that username instead of root. On the first connection, SSH may ask you to confirm the server’s host key. Verify the fingerprint in the provider console before accepting it, particularly if the address has been reused.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the web console

Open the VPS details page and choose its web-console or browser-console option. This opens a terminal attached to the server without requiring your local SSH configuration. It is especially useful for fixing an SSH-key problem or completing the first login.

Check that Claude Code is present

After connecting, run:

claude /help

The command should display Claude Code’s available commands. If the shell reports that claude cannot be found, confirm that you deployed the image with Claude Code included rather than a plain Ubuntu image, then check the image’s deployment notes with your provider.

How do I log in to Claude Code on the VPS?

Start the browser-based account authorization from the VPS terminal with claude /login. Claude Code prints a URL; open that URL in a browser, sign in with the appropriate Anthropic credentials, approve access, and return to the terminal.

  1. In the SSH or web-console terminal, enter claude /login.
  2. Copy the complete URL printed by the CLI. If the terminal wraps it across lines, copy the entire address rather than only the visible first line.
  3. Open the URL on a computer or phone browser.
  4. Sign in to the Anthropic account or organization that should pay for and govern this work.
  5. Authorize Claude Code when prompted.
  6. Return to the VPS terminal and wait for the CLI to confirm authentication. If it does not, rerun claude /login and complete a fresh authorization.

Organizations that do not use account-based login can use the authentication path their administrator supplies, including an API key, Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. Those alternatives require the relevant cloud account, permissions and environment configuration; the exact variables and credentials are organization-specific.

What commands do I run after authentication?

Use an interactive session for a continuing conversation, or pass one prompt for a single operation.

Start an interactive session

claude

Claude Code will respond in the terminal. Describe the task, inspect its proposed actions and approve changes according to the permission mode you choose.

Send one prompt

claude "Explain the difference between TCP and UDP."

This is convenient for a focused question or a quick check. For a real coding task, first move into the project directory so Claude has the intended context.

Read the command reference

claude /help

Use the built-in help whenever a command’s spelling or options are uncertain. Claude Code changes frequently, so the help output on your installed build is more authoritative than an old screenshot or blog post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I make Claude work on a repository?

Claude Code reads project files on demand; there is no separate upload step. Put the repository on the VPS, change into its root directory, and then start Claude.

  1. Clone the repository or otherwise place it on the server using your normal source-control process.
  2. Change into the project directory, for example:
cd /path/to/your-project
  1. Launch Claude from that directory:
claude

Working-directory choice matters. Starting in your home directory can expose unrelated files and deprive Claude of the project’s local instructions. Starting in the repository root gives the session the correct file scope and configuration.

Create project instructions with /init

In an interactive session, run:

/init

This creates a project CLAUDE.md file that can document build commands, coding conventions, test procedures and constraints. Review the generated file and commit it only if its contents are appropriate for everyone who works on the repository.

Add reusable skills

Reusable instructions and workflows can live in .claude/skills/. Keep skills narrowly focused, document their expected inputs and outputs, and avoid placing secrets or personal tokens in them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I run repeatable or unattended tasks?

Use print mode with claude -p when a task should run without an interactive back-and-forth. Supply the prompt and capture the output in your shell or automation system.

claude -p "Summarize the failing tests and suggest the smallest fix."

Non-interactive execution is useful in scripts, but it deserves stricter review: make the script preserve logs, check exit status, and avoid granting broad write access unless the task genuinely needs it.

Continue an interrupted session

If a connection drops or you leave a task unfinished, try:

claude --continue

To select a particular prior session, use:

claude --resume

The available session history and selection behavior depend on the installed Claude Code build. Run claude /help if the option names or prompts differ.

How should I control permissions and edits?

Claude Code has permission modes that determine whether it may inspect, modify or execute actions without asking each time. Cycle through modes with Shift+Tab, and inspect or change the approval rules with /permissions.

Plan mode

Plan mode is read-only. Use it when you want Claude to inspect the repository and propose a sequence of changes before any action is applied. It is the safest starting point for an unfamiliar codebase or a production-sensitive task.

Manual mode

Manual approval keeps you in the loop as Claude requests actions. Review the command, files and scope before approving each material operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

acceptEdits mode

acceptEdits allows a more automatic editing workflow while still using the tool’s permission controls. Use it only in a disposable branch or a repository whose backup and rollback process you trust.

Regardless of mode, do not approve commands that expose credentials, alter unrelated directories or delete data you cannot restore. Run tests and inspect the diff before committing or deploying.

What is a reliable first-session workflow?

The following sequence keeps setup, context and approval decisions separate:

  1. Connect with SSH or the web console.
  2. Run claude /help to confirm the CLI is available.
  3. Authenticate with claude /login, or configure the organization’s API, Bedrock or Vertex path.
  4. Move into the repository with cd.
  5. Start in Plan mode and ask Claude to inspect the project and outline the requested change.
  6. Review the plan, switch to the least permissive mode that can complete the task, and approve only relevant actions.
  7. Run the project’s tests, inspect the diff and record the result in your normal version-control workflow.
  8. Use claude --continue or claude --resume if you need to return to the same work later.

How does a VPS template compare with a local install or cloud sessions?

The right option depends on whether you value persistent server access, local control or managed isolation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Where work runs Access method Persistence Who manages infrastructure Permission and isolation considerations
Ubuntu 24.04 Claude Code VPS template Your rented Linux VPS SSH or a provider web console Files remain on the VPS while the instance and its storage exist You manage the operating system, credentials, updates and server security Claude Code approval modes apply; you must secure the machine and user accounts
Local Claude Code installation Your workstation Local terminal Uses local disks and local backups You manage the computer and installation Direct access to local files and tools; device security is critical
Anthropic cloud session An isolated cloud virtual machine Managed web workflow A session clones a GitHub repository and returns work through a branch and pull request The cloud service manages the session infrastructure Isolation is provided per session, while repository and organization permissions still apply

A VPS is a strong fit when you want a persistent Linux workspace reachable from multiple locations. A local install is simpler when your code and tools already live on one trusted workstation. Managed cloud sessions are better when you want disposable, isolated task environments and a branch-and-pull-request handoff rather than a long-lived server.

What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?

The SSH connection is refused or times out

  • Confirm that you copied the current public IP, not an internal address.
  • Verify that deployment has finished and the VPS is powered on.
  • Try the web console to determine whether the problem is local networking or the server itself.
  • Check the username and SSH key or password supplied during deployment.

The browser authorization does not complete

  • Run claude /login again and use the newly printed URL.
  • Copy the entire URL into the browser, without added spaces or missing characters.
  • Sign in to the account that is authorized for the intended organization or billing arrangement.
  • If the VPS terminal is difficult to use, complete the command from the web console and repeat the browser step.

Claude cannot see the files I expected

  • Run pwd and ls to verify the current directory.
  • Use cd to enter the repository root before starting Claude.
  • Check that the repository was actually cloned on this VPS and that the logged-in Unix user can read it.
  • Inspect ignore rules and project instructions if specific files are intentionally excluded.

Claude proposes changes outside the project

Stop and switch to Plan mode. Confirm the working directory, review /permissions, and restart from the repository root. Do not approve a broad command merely to make the warning disappear.

A resumed session is not the one I expected

Use claude --resume to choose from available sessions instead of assuming that --continue selected the correct one. If the VPS was replaced or its storage was deleted, the prior session data may no longer be present.

How do I keep the VPS secure?

The template accelerates installation but does not outsource server administration. Use SSH keys where available, disable shared credentials, create individual users for collaborators, apply operating-system updates through your provider’s documented process, and keep regular backups of code and configuration. Treat terminal output, logs and CLAUDE.md as potentially sensitive because they can contain file paths, internal URLs or accidental secrets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep production credentials outside the repository and grant Claude only the environment variables and tools required for the task. Before accepting edits or running commands, inspect the proposed scope; after the task, review the version-control diff and revoke temporary credentials that are no longer needed.

Which documentation should I check for current behavior?

Claude Code ships frequently, so command names, permission details and authentication screens can change. Anthropic’s “Your first day in Claude Code” guide is dated April 15, 2026, and its “Claude Code user FAQ” is dated August 7, 2026; use those current materials together with the CLI’s own claude /help output. The installed command reference should win when an older article describes a different prompt or option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the VPS from more than one computer?

Yes. SSH from each authorized computer or use the browser console, then enter the same project directory. Use separate SSH keys or operating-system accounts for different people instead of sharing a root credential.

Do I need to upload my repository before starting Claude Code?

No. Put or clone the repository on the VPS, change into its root directory, and Claude Code reads files there on demand. Uploading a second copy is unnecessary and can leave you editing the wrong checkout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an organization avoid browser login entirely?

It can, when its Claude Code deployment uses an API key, Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. The administrator must provide the required cloud permissions and environment configuration; those details differ by organization.

What happens to my work if my SSH window closes?

A disconnected terminal does not by itself explain whether a command finished or stopped. Reconnect, inspect the repository and session history, and use claude --continue or claude --resume when the relevant session is still available.

When is a managed cloud session a better choice than a VPS?

Choose a managed session when you want an isolated virtual machine that clones a GitHub repository, runs configured setup commands and returns work through a branch and pull request. Choose the VPS when you need a long-lived server you administer directly over SSH.
