Claude for Google Workspace is an Anthropic beta extension that opens a Claude sidebar inside Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides. It reads the file you currently have open and can draft, analyze, restructure or edit that file in place. The beta is available to Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers when Google Workspace Marketplace access and your administrator’s policy allow it.
Install the extension once, open it from Extensions > Claude > Open Claude, sign in, and then describe a specific result. The instructions below show how to set it up, write reliable prompts, review edits safely, understand connector differences and work around the beta’s limits.
What is Claude for Google Workspace, and what can it do?
Claude for Google Workspace is an extension that adds a Claude sidebar to all three core Google productivity apps. Claude uses the open document, spreadsheet or presentation as its working context and can make direct changes in that file. One installation covers Docs, Sheets and Slides; you do not install a separate add-on for each app.

Access requires a Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, Google Workspace Marketplace availability and any approval required by your organization. A Workspace administrator can block the Marketplace app or restrict related settings, so a personal account and a managed work account may show different options.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the sidebar can see
In its normal mode, the sidebar sees the file open in the current app and any content you select or identify. It does not automatically search every file in Drive, Gmail or Calendar. That narrow scope is useful for confidential work because you can keep the task tied to one open file, but it also explains why Claude may say it cannot find a document that is stored elsewhere.
What “edits directly” means
Claude’s changes are ordinary edits to the file, not Google Docs suggestion-mode proposals. The default protection is Ask before edits: Claude describes a proposed change and waits for your approval. You can use Accept all edits for routine content changes, but Claude still pauses before links, external images, web addresses and access-related actions.
How do I add Claude to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides?
Install the Marketplace extension once, grant its requested Google permissions, then open the Claude sidebar from any supported app.
- Open Google Workspace Marketplace. Find the official Claude for Google Workspace listing and choose Install.
- Choose the account. Select the Google account you use for Docs, Sheets and Slides, then continue.
- Review permissions. Google will show the access the extension requests. Approve it only if the account, publisher and requested scope match your organization’s policy.
- Reload open files. Documents, sheets or presentations that were already open may need a refresh before the extension appears.
- Open the sidebar. In the file, choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
- Sign in. Authenticate with the Claude account on an eligible Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan.
- Enable approved connectors, if offered. An organization may make Drive, Gmail or Calendar connectors available separately. Do not assume that installing the sidebar has enabled them.
- Give Claude a concrete outcome. Ask for a summary, rewrite, formula explanation, data cleanup or slide draft rather than a vague request such as “help with this.”
Permissions and browser requirements
The extension requests permission to display third-party web content in Google applications and to view or manage the file in which it is installed. It does not request broad access to all Drive files, Gmail, Calendar, contacts or arbitrary network resources. Chrome, Edge and Safari are supported for this beta; Firefox is not supported.
If the Claude menu is missing
- Refresh the file after installation and reopen Extensions.
- Confirm that you installed the extension for the same Google account that owns or edits the file.
- Check whether a Workspace administrator has blocked Marketplace apps.
- Verify that your Claude account is on Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise rather than an ineligible plan.
- Try a supported browser if you are using Firefox.
How do I use Claude in Google Docs?
Open the document, select the passage or section you want Claude to use, and state the required output, length and formatting. Selecting relevant text reduces ambiguity and helps Claude avoid changing unrelated material.
Useful Docs prompts
Rewrite the executive summary so it leads with the recommendation and fits in one paragraph.Turn the notes under “Next steps” into a table with owner, action and due date.Check this contract for defined terms that are used but never defined. List each term and the section where it appears.Make every heading sentence case and fix the numbering in section 4.
A reliable document-editing workflow
- Prepare the context. Remove obsolete text, select the relevant section and identify the audience or purpose.
- Ask for analysis first. Request an outline, list of inconsistencies or proposed changes before asking Claude to apply them.
- Specify constraints. Include tone, target length, heading style, reading level, required terminology and text that must remain unchanged.
- Review the proposal. Use Ask before edits when accuracy matters, especially for contracts, policy documents and externally supplied files.
- Approve in small batches. Applying a section at a time makes it easier to identify an unwanted rewrite.
- Check the result in Docs. Verify headings, numbering, tables, links and any text that carries legal, financial or technical meaning.
What Claude cannot do in Docs
Claude cannot read, reply to or resolve existing Google Docs comments. It also cannot accept or reject existing Google suggestion-mode changes. If a document contains reviewer feedback, handle those comments and suggestions in Google Docs itself, then ask Claude to revise the clean text after you have incorporated the feedback.

Can Claude edit a Google Sheet?
Yes. Claude can inspect selected cells or a named range, explain and repair formulas, clean data, build models on new tabs and analyze spreadsheet content. Describe the desired output and identify the relevant sheet, columns or range so it does not infer the wrong scope.
Prompts for formulas and auditing
Walk me through how the total in H42 is calculated and flag anything hardcoded.Find why the VLOOKUP in the Summary tab returns #N/A for some rows and fix it. Explain the cause first.Column D has dates in three different formats. Normalize them to YYYY-MM-DD and report rows that cannot be converted.
Prompts for modeling and analysis
Build a three-statement model on a new tab from the assumptions in “Inputs.” Label every assumption and link formulas instead of hardcoding outputs.Add a sensitivity table for price and volume, plus a chart of revenue by quarter.
Spreadsheet safeguards
- Duplicate or version the file first. This gives you a clean recovery point before structural changes.
- Name the target range. Say “Summary!A2:H200” or select those cells instead of asking Claude to edit the entire workbook.
- Ask for a diagnosis. For formula errors, request the cause and proposed formula before approving a replacement.
- Check formulas and formats. Inspect relative references, absolute references, date formats, number formats, hidden rows and totals after the edit.
- Test edge cases. Check blank rows, duplicate keys, zero values and dates at the start or end of the reporting period.
Connected Sheets and other spreadsheet limits
Claude cannot read or edit a Connected Sheets tab backed by BigQuery. Extract the required data into a regular Google Sheets tab before asking for analysis. Claude also cannot create triggers, custom menus or scheduled refreshes, so recurring automation must be configured through Google’s own tools or another approved workflow.
How is Claude for Sheets different?
The separate Claude for Sheets extension is a different workflow. It runs Claude interactions in spreadsheet cells and requires an Anthropic API key as well as Marketplace installation. The Google Workspace sidebar described here does not turn formulas into Claude calls and does not require that cell-based setup.
How do I use Claude in Google Slides?
Open the presentation, select a slide or provide deck context, and describe the visual and editorial result you want. Claude can draft slides, reorganize content, standardize titles and restyle a deck using an existing design direction.
Prompts for creating and restructuring slides
Draft a five-slide project update from the bullet points in the speaker notes on slide 1.Slide 7 is a wall of text. Split it into two slides and keep the deck’s styling.Make the titles across the deck parallel and under eight words each.Restyle this deck to use the fonts and colors from the title slide.
Prompts for charts and visual consistency
Add a bar chart of the regional numbers on slide 4, matching the deck’s colors.Use the same title hierarchy, margins and accent color as the title slide on every new slide.
Charts Claude creates in Slides are inserted as images. They are not linked Sheets charts, so they do not update automatically when the source numbers change. Existing linked charts in Google Slides must still be updated manually through Google’s chart-link controls.

Slide-review checklist
- Confirm that every slide has one clear message.
- Check that generated images and charts use the intended data and labels.
- Verify font availability, contrast, alignment and text that may overflow.
- Replace image-based charts with linked charts when the deck needs live updates.
Is Claude the same as the Google Drive connector?
No. The in-file extension works in a sidebar beside the open Doc, Sheet or presentation. Google Workspace connectors are a separate Claude capability that can search connected Drive, Gmail and Calendar services and edit Docs, Sheets and Slides from a pane beside the chat.

| Capability | Claude Workspace sidebar | Google Workspace connectors | Claude for Sheets extension |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where work happens | Sidebar inside the open Google app | Claude chat pane with connected services | Interactions run in spreadsheet cells |
| Content scope | Current file and selected content | Authorized Drive, Gmail and Calendar content, plus live Docs, Sheets and Slides editing | Cells and ranges where the extension is used |
| Setup | Marketplace install, Google permissions and Claude sign-in | Connector authentication and organization approval | Marketplace install plus an Anthropic API key |
| Typical use | Rewrite a document, repair a formula or draft slides in place | Find information across connected services, then work in a named Google file | Generate or transform values through cell formulas and interactions |
| Important caution | Does not search arbitrary Drive files | Ask specifically for a Google Doc, Google Sheet or Google Slides deck; a generic “document” may create a local file | Separate workflow from the sidebar beta |
When using connectors, name the Google object explicitly: for example, “Open the Q3 planning Google Sheet and add a variance column.” A generic request for a “document” can result in a local file instead of the intended Google file.
How do I review, undo and recover Claude’s edits?
Keep approval controls enabled for consequential work, inspect each proposal, and use Google’s normal recovery tools if an edit is wrong.
Approval controls
Ask before edits is the safest default for contracts, financial models, policy documents and files received from outside your organization. Accept all edits can speed up ordinary formatting or copy changes, but it does not bypass pauses for links, external images, web addresses or access-related actions.
Undo and version history
Use Undo for the latest change. For a larger rollback, open File > Version history and restore an earlier version. Claude’s edits appear in the file’s normal version history under your user name, so the same audit trail applies as with other edits.
Prompt-injection awareness
Claude treats document content as data rather than commands and is designed not to follow hidden instructions that tell it to share a file, fetch a link or contact someone. Still inspect proposed actions yourself, especially when a file came from an external party or contains embedded instructions.
Why can’t Claude see my other files?
The sidebar normally has access only to the file open in the current app, not to arbitrary files elsewhere in Drive. Open the needed file and ask again, or use an organization-approved Google Workspace connector when the task genuinely requires cross-file, Gmail or Calendar search.

When a connector is the better choice
Use a connector when you need to locate a file by content, combine information from several authorized services or ask Claude to work from a Drive file that is not open. Connector access is governed separately, so your organization may require additional authentication or approval.

Plan a job around the extension’s current constraints instead of treating it as an unrestricted Workspace automation tool.
- Availability: Beta access, eligible plans and administrator policies can change.
- Browser support: Chrome, Edge and Safari are supported; Firefox is not supported in this beta.
- Sidebar session: Keep the sidebar open while a task runs. Closing it stops the current task.
- Run duration: One long operation can run for up to six minutes. Split a large document, workbook or deck into stages.
- File scope: The extension works on the opened file, not arbitrary files elsewhere in Drive.
- Comments and suggestions: Existing Docs comments and suggestion-mode changes are not fully actionable.
- Connected Sheets: BigQuery-backed Connected Sheets tabs cannot be read or edited.
- Automation: Claude cannot create triggers, custom menus or scheduled refreshes.
- Charts: Slides charts generated by Claude are images rather than linked Sheets charts.
- Voice: Voice dictation is unavailable in the sidebar.
How to split a job that exceeds the run limit
- Ask Claude to inspect and outline the full task without editing.
- Divide the work by section, tab, slide range or operation type.
- Run one stage while keeping the sidebar open.
- Verify the output and save a version before starting the next stage.
- Use a final prompt to check consistency across the completed sections.
What privacy and administration controls apply?
Workspace administrators control Marketplace allowlisting and organization settings, while Claude’s plan and connector policies determine which users can authenticate. Review both sets of controls before deploying the extension for a team.
The extension’s permission request is limited to displaying third-party web content in Google applications and viewing or managing the installed file; it does not request broad Drive, Gmail, Calendar, contacts or arbitrary network access. Anthropic states that content is handled under the applicable Claude terms, is not used to train its models, and that inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic systems within 30 days except where its terms describe otherwise.
For sensitive work, apply least privilege: install under the intended account, enable only approved connectors, keep files limited to the people who need them and review proposed external actions before approval.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Claude in Google Workspace with a free Claude account?
The beta is documented for Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Eligibility can change, and a Workspace administrator may also restrict Marketplace access, so a free account or an unmanaged personal account is not guaranteed to work.
Does Claude automatically read every file in my Google Drive?
No. The in-file sidebar is limited to the file open in Docs, Sheets or Slides and the content you provide. Cross-file Drive, Gmail or Calendar search requires a separately authorized connector.
Will Claude’s Google Slides charts update when my numbers change?
No. Charts created by Claude in Slides are inserted as images. If the source data changes, recreate the image or replace it with a manually maintained linked Sheets chart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan Claude accept or reject comments and suggestions in Google Docs?
No. It cannot resolve existing comments or accept and reject existing suggestion-mode changes. Handle those review actions in Google Docs, then ask Claude to revise the resulting text.
What should I do if a Claude task stops halfway through?
Keep the sidebar open during execution and check whether the operation reached the beta’s six-minute limit. Split the job into smaller sections, verify the partial result, save a version and continue from the next unprocessed section.
