To defeat The Fallen, strike the rebounding Holy Cross instead of simply avoiding it, punish the boss after the projectile is removed, and stop attacking before the third swipe of its claw combo turns back toward Rose. At about half health, create space, read the whip wind-up, dodge under the lash, and counter during recovery. The fight takes place at the end of the Path of the Rat beneath the Paris Streets.

Reach the arena prepared

The Fallen is the first major boss Rose encounters in the sewers. The route ends at a gate beneath the Paris Streets, after the Path of the Rat. On the approach, clear enemies in small groups rather than rushing through every encounter. Bats can attack from above lower passages, so look upward before committing to a jump or attack.

Before entering the gate, check the lower-left wall for a breakable section containing a hidden food pickup. It is an optional route detail, but the healing item can make the opening attempts more forgiving.

The fight’s central rule: hit the Holy Cross

The Fallen throws a large Holy Cross that spins and ricochets around the arena walls. It is not just an attack to evade. Slashing the cross as it passes triggers the fight’s next stage and gives you the cleanest opportunity to resume offense.

Castlevania Anniversary Collection - Limited Run #405 - PlayStation 4

  • Includes the "History of Castlevania - Book of the Crescent Moon" ebook.
  • This includes eight classic Castlevania games preserved on one disc with a full-color manual.
  • The Castlevania Anniversary Collection on physical disc for the PlayStation 4. Also works on PlayStation 5. Region-free.
  1. Track its full path. Watch both the approach and the return. The cross can be behind Rose while your attention is fixed on the boss.
  2. Face the projectile and strike as it comes through. A deliberate hit is safer than chasing the boss while the cross is still active.
  3. Return to offense only after the cross is dealt with. Continuing to tunnel on boss damage leaves Rose exposed to the projectile’s rebound.

GamesRadar and the PlayStation Blog frame this as a pattern-learning encounter: repeated attempts are expected, and patience is more valuable than forcing damage during an unsafe window.

Read each attack and choose the correct counter

Attack What to watch for Reliable response
Holy Cross A large spinning cross that rebounds from arena walls Face it and slash as it passes; monitor its return path before attacking the boss
Three-hit claw combo The Fallen jumps toward Rose and swipes three times Move behind the boss for the first two swipes, then disengage before the third swipe turns toward Rose
Whip lash A long, straight attack introduced around half health Read the wind-up, dodge under the lash, and counter during recovery

Three-hit claw combo

When The Fallen leaps toward Rose, expect three swipes rather than a single strike. Move behind the boss after the opening hits, but do not remain committed through the entire sequence. The third swipe turns toward Rose and catches players who keep attacking after the first two evasions.

During early attempts, use one counterattack per opening. Once the timing is consistent, you can test whether an additional hit is safe, but the guide’s practical priority is survival: reposition before the third swipe instead of gambling on a longer combo.

Whip phase

At roughly half health, The Fallen adds a far-reaching whip. The new range makes a direct approach dangerous and can make panic retreat less effective than a measured dodge. Watch the wind-up, then move under the straight lash rather than backing away blindly. The recovery after the whip is your counter window.

  • 17 Levels - Each one with its own atmosphere, foes and secrets to discover
  • 5 Bosses - Made by the most sadistic of the devs, raised on the salt of the testers
  • 150 or so weapons and skills - Spears, swords, bows, magic spells, shields, pets, frying pans etc; You name it, we got it

  • Battle through the corridors of Dracula’s Castle; Wield weapons against monsters to reach the throne room of the Dark Lord

The exact timing is qualitative rather than frame-perfect. No published source establishes exact hit points, damage values, or invincibility-frame counts, and demo timing can change with patches. Use the animation’s start and recovery rather than a fixed numerical rhythm.

A practical battle sequence

  1. Enter with a healing item available. Clear the nearby route carefully and collect the lower-left wall pickup if you need extra margin for attempts.
  2. Stay mobile in the opening. Keep enough room to see the cross’s approach and rebound.
  3. Destroy the Holy Cross on its pass. Do not let the boss’s position distract you from the projectile.
  4. Exploit the opening. Attack The Fallen while it is recovering, then reset your position instead of extending a risky string.
  5. Handle the claw jump. Get behind the boss for the first two swipes, then stop attacking and move before the turning third swipe.
  6. Adjust at half health. Expect the whip, preserve space, and wait for the wind-up.
  7. Dodge under the lash and punish recovery. Return to neutral after the counter so the next cross or claw sequence does not catch Rose in place.

Close-range and ranged choices

The early sword and fireball are sufficient for this encounter. A close-range sword counter offers stronger damage opportunities when The Fallen is recovering, but it requires accurate positioning around the claw sequence. Fireballs let Rose maintain more distance and can feel safer while learning the patterns, although they do not remove the need to deal with the Holy Cross.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Only dodging the Holy Cross: The projectile is the fight’s central puzzle. Turn toward it and slash when it passes.
  • Attacking through all three claw swipes: The third swipe turns toward Rose. Break off after the first two evasions.
  • Backing away from the whip without reading it: Watch the wind-up and dodge under the straight lash.
  • Chasing damage while the projectile is behind you: Recheck the cross’s return path before committing to another attack.
  • Expecting fixed, frame-perfect timing: Demo timing may change with patches, so learn the animation and recovery rather than memorizing a number.

Rewards after The Fallen

The PlayStation Blog explains that defeated bosses merge into Rose’s tarot deck as Arcana. The Fallen’s Holy Cross becomes an ability after Rose tames it, turning the encounter’s main hazard into a tool for later progression.

What to remember

  • The arena is at the end of the Path of the Rat beneath the Paris Streets.
  • Strike the rebounding Holy Cross; evasion alone keeps the fight in its dangerous state.
  • Move behind The Fallen for the first two claw swipes, then leave before the third turns.
  • In the whip phase, spacing and wind-up recognition matter more than panic retreat.
  • Victory provides Arcana progression and the Holy Cross ability, while specific key rewards remain demo-specific.
