Fast travel in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is locked until you defeat Medusa, Joan, and The Fallen, obtain all three emblems, enter the Catacombs, and reach the scripted Death encounter. After that sequence, the Boatman/Ferryman route opens and previously visited areas are added retroactively. If you have not reached Death, a locked destination list is normally a progression gate rather than a broken save.
Once travel is available, remember that the game has two independent systems: activated Mirrors of Life and Ferryman Wharfs. Mirrors require a direct kneel or interact action at each mirror; Wharfs require a conversation with the Ferryman and then blue doors. Save rooms, ordinary doors, and unregistered mirrors do not appear in either list.
First, identify which travel system is failing
The symptom usually tells you whether the problem is story progression, mirror registration, or Wharf activation. Use this table before changing settings or reinstalling anything.

How fast travel is structured
Mirrors of Life are individual nodes
Each Mirror of Life is its own destination. Walking past a mirror does not register it. You must interact with the object using the input assigned to kneel or interact, and remain in position while the hub opens. Only mirrors activated in this way are listed for mirror travel.

The mirror list is therefore a record of individual nodes, not a complete map of every save room or every area you have visited. A room can be safe, contain a save point, and still have no mirror destination.
Ferryman Wharfs are regional hubs
Wharf travel is a separate network. A Ferryman must first be spoken to to enable the route at that location. Once the route is active, blue doors provide the connection between regional hubs. The Wharf list does not include every activated Mirror, and a Mirror list does not include every Wharf.
If you are standing beside the Ferryman and a door has no prompt, check its color and your activation state. The blue-door interaction is the Wharf action; using a nearby ordinary door or a save-room entrance cannot substitute for it.

Neither network is a universal teleport
Mirror travel covers activated mirrors only. Wharf travel covers hub-to-hub crossings only. The two destination lists never merge into one universal map teleport, so an apparently missing location may simply belong to the other network or may not be a travel node at all.

The story requirement: reach the scripted Death encounter
A 2026 Games.GG guide identifies the unlock sequence as a progression requirement rather than an optional upgrade. Complete these milestones in order:
- Defeat Medusa. Keep the resulting emblem; it is one of the three required emblems.
- Defeat Joan. Her emblem is also required for the route to open.
- Defeat The Fallen. This supplies the third emblem.
- Enter the Catacombs. Having the three emblems is not the final trigger by itself.
- Reach the scripted Death encounter. Continue through the Catacombs until the story encounter with Death occurs.
After the Death sequence, the Boatman/Ferryman route becomes available. The guide states that this route is not missable and that areas you visited earlier are added retroactively, so an initially empty or locked list does not mean those zones are permanently lost.
How to tell whether you have actually cleared the gate
- If Death has not appeared in the Catacombs, treat the locked travel screen as intentional.
- If you defeated the three named bosses but have not entered the Catacombs, continue the story; the emblem collection alone is not the final trigger.
- If you reached the scripted Death encounter and the route is still absent, close the travel screen, leave the room, and return after confirming that the encounter completed rather than merely approaching its area.
- If earlier zones appear only after the encounter, that is the expected retroactive behavior, not a data-loss symptom.
Fix a Mirror of Life that is missing from the list
Use this exact registration procedure for every mirror that should be available.
- Return to the visible Mirror of Life. Do not rely on having walked past it earlier.
- Move until the character is directly in front of the mirror, close enough for the interaction to register.
- Press and hold the control bound to interact or kneel. The required control depends on your configured input, so use the action shown in your controls menu rather than assuming a keyboard key or controller button.
- Keep holding until the mirror hub opens. A brief tap or an interrupted animation may leave the mirror unregistered.
- Exit the hub normally instead of forcing a scene change.
- Open mirror travel again and confirm that this node now appears in the destination list.
If there is no kneel or interact prompt
First verify that you are at a Mirror of Life and not a visually similar object, save room, or ordinary doorway. The mirror interaction can be position-sensitive: stand squarely in front of the object, then hold the configured action. Passing through the room, jumping near it, or touching it from an angle does not count as activation.

Check the control mapping if the action does nothing. A changed keyboard, controller, or accessibility layout can leave the kneel/interact action unbound or assigned to an unexpected button. Rebind it, return to the mirror, and repeat the hold until the hub opens.
If the mirror opens but still does not appear later
Leave through the normal hub exit, then revisit the travel interface. If the node is still absent, repeat the activation while standing closer and holding the action for the full opening animation. Make sure you are checking the Mirror list rather than a Wharf list; destinations are not shared between the systems.
Fix a Ferryman or blue-door connection
- Find the Ferryman at the regional landing point.
- Speak with the Ferryman before trying to travel. The conversation enables the Wharf route.
- After the conversation, approach a door marked as a blue door.
- Use the interaction prompt on that blue door and select an available Wharf destination.
- If the door remains inactive, leave and re-enter the area after the conversation, then try the blue door again.
The presence of the Ferryman alone is not proof that every connection is active. The route must be enabled through the conversation, and only the designated blue doors act as Wharf links. A normal door, a door to a save room, or a nearby Mirror cannot be used as a substitute.
Mirror versus Wharf: the practical differences

What to do when destinations remain locked after Death
If you have completed the scripted Death encounter, work through the following checks without mixing the two networks.

1. Confirm the encounter was completed
Re-enter the Catacombs route and verify that the Death scene actually played. Reaching the general area, seeing a marker, or defeating a different enemy is not the same trigger described by the progression guide.
2. Revisit the travel point
Leave the room, return to the Mirror or Wharf, and open the travel interface again. Earlier areas are expected to be added retroactively after the route opens, so a fresh visit can make the updated list visible.
3. Check the correct list
Use a Mirror interface when looking for an individual mirror and a Wharf interface when looking for a regional crossing. A destination cannot be moved from one list to the other by revisiting it.

Previously visiting a room does not activate its mirror. Perform the full kneel/interact procedure at that mirror, then check the list again.

5. Re-enable the Wharf locally
At the relevant hub, speak with its Ferryman again and use the blue door. Do not test the connection through an ordinary door or save-room entrance.
Optional Windows mod for a direct mirror menu
Windows Steam players who want a menu rather than the normal mirror-by-mirror interface can use the optional “Belmont Fast Travel” mod. It adds a direct menu between Mirrors that have already been used.
- Prerequisite: install BepInEx for the game.
- Supported test build: Steam build 25975867 was the build reported as tested.
- How it works: hold Up while standing at a mirror that you have already used, choose a destination, and confirm.
- What it cannot do: it does not unlock the story gate, create destinations that you have not activated, or turn Wharfs and save rooms into mirrors.
Because this is third-party Windows software, keep a backup of saves and verify that the mod version matches your game build before installing it. If the vanilla game cannot yet use the Boatman/Ferryman route, the mod is not a workaround for that progression requirement.

Konami has published a separate notice for a launch problem associated with V-Sync being disabled and Unlimited FPS settings. That issue can prevent the game from starting; it does not explain a locked travel list, an unregistered mirror, or an inactive blue door.
For the launch/display problem, Konami’s stated recovery sequence is:
- Lower the monitor refresh rate to below 60 Hz in the operating system display settings.
- Enable V-Sync in the game.
- Close the game completely.
- Restore the monitor’s original refresh rate.
Use those steps only when the symptom is a launch failure connected to refresh-rate or V-Sync settings. Changing refresh rate will not bypass the Catacombs/Death gate or register a Mirror of Life.
A complete diagnostic decision path
- Has Death appeared in the Catacombs? If no, finish the Medusa, Joan, The Fallen, three-emblem, Catacombs, and Death sequence. If yes, continue.
- Are you trying to use an individual mirror? Stand directly in front of it, hold the configured kneel/interact action, wait for the hub, and exit normally.
- Are you trying to cross regions? Speak with the Ferryman and use a blue door. Do not use a normal door.
- Is the destination a save room? Save rooms are not automatically travel nodes. Locate the area’s Mirror or Wharf instead.
- Is the problem a missing prompt? Check the control binding, center your character on the object, and hold the action instead of tapping it.
- Is the game failing before gameplay starts? Apply the separate refresh-rate/V-Sync workaround; it is unrelated to travel progression.
- Are you on Windows Steam and want a shortcut? The BepInEx-based Belmont Fast Travel mod can provide a direct menu only for mirrors already used.
Important limits and edge cases
- The three emblems are a prerequisite, but the final story trigger is reaching the scripted Death encounter in the Catacombs.
- The travel route is reported as non-missable, and previously visited zones are added after the unlock; an early empty list is therefore not evidence that a zone has been permanently skipped.
- Mirror registration is per node. Activating one mirror does not activate every mirror in that region.
- Wharf activation is per hub conversation. Seeing one Ferryman does not merge all regional destinations into the Mirror list.
- There are no published player-count, completion-rate, or performance figures establishing how often these symptoms occur; treat community reports, including anecdotes about kneeling near characters such as Eleanor, as anecdotal rather than official mechanics.
Bottom line
Complete the three-boss emblem sequence, enter the Catacombs, and reach Death before treating fast travel as broken. Then activate each Mirror by holding its kneel/interact action and enable each Wharf by speaking with the Ferryman and using blue doors. If the game will not launch because of V-Sync or Unlimited FPS settings, use Konami’s refresh-rate workaround; that PC issue is separate from fast-travel progression.
