Yes—but only after you add Sony’s separately sold PlayStation 5 Disc Drive (model CFI-ZDD1). The PS5 Pro itself has no optical drive. With the compatible drive attached, it can play supported PS4 physical game discs and movie discs in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD formats. The drive also enables supported PS5 physical discs, while a PS5 Pro used without it remains digital-only.

Does the PS5 Pro come with a disc drive?
No. PS5 Pro is sold without an optical disc mechanism. You must purchase and attach the PlayStation 5 Disc Drive (CFI-ZDD1) to use any physical game or movie disc. A digital download does not substitute for the drive when your copy of a game or film is on a disc.
The drive is an accessory rather than an optional software feature. Installing it changes the console’s hardware capability: before installation, the PS5 Pro cannot read a disc; afterward, it can read supported PS5 and PS4 game discs and the supported movie formats. Availability and retail pricing can vary by country and seller; Sony’s compatibility information identifies the model but does not establish one universal price.
Can PS5 Pro play Blu-ray movies?
Yes. Once CFI-ZDD1 is installed, the console supports three principal video-disc categories:

- 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray: The drive supports physical 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs.
- Standard Blu-ray: Regular Blu-ray video discs are supported.
- DVD: DVD movie discs are supported as well.
This means “Blu-ray” is not limited to the basic 1080p format: a PS5 Pro with the drive can serve as a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, a standard Blu-ray player and a DVD player. The console must have the drive physically attached; the digital-only PS5 Pro cannot access these discs through an app or an adapter that is not the Sony drive.
What about 3D Blu-ray?
Sony states that 3D stereoscopic output is not supported on PS5. Consequently, you should not buy the PS5 Pro as a 3D Blu-ray player. Ordinary 4K Ultra HD, standard Blu-ray and DVD playback remain separate supported formats, but the console will not provide the stereoscopic 3D presentation that compatible televisions and players can produce.

Can you use PS4 discs on PS5 Pro?
Yes, provided two conditions are met: the PS5 Pro has the CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive installed, and the particular PS4 game is supported. Sony says that more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5 Pro. That is broad backward compatibility, not a guarantee for every PS4 release; Sony also lists a small number of incompatible titles.

A physical PS4 disc is therefore different from a digital PS4 purchase. The disc requires the drive, while a digital license can be downloaded through the account that owns it without reading a physical disc. For a disc owner, the practical check is straightforward: identify the exact PS4 title, confirm it is on Sony’s supported list, and make sure the drive is attached before inserting the disc.

What “supported” means
- Supported title: The game is included in Sony’s PS4 compatibility coverage and can be used on PS5 Pro with the required hardware.
- Incompatible title: The game is one of the small number Sony excludes; adding a drive does not make it playable.
- Feature differences: Sony warns that some PS4 functionality may be absent on PS5. A game can run while a peripheral feature, display behavior or other PS4-specific function does not work exactly as it did on the original console.
Do not interpret the “over 8,500” figure as a promise that every mode and accessory behaves identically. It describes the size of the supported game library, while individual titles can retain limitations.

- Obtain the correct accessory. Confirm that the product is the PlayStation 5 Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1, rather than a different optical-drive product.
- Attach the drive to the powered-off console. Use the drive’s installation instructions and ensure it is seated correctly before turning the PS5 Pro on.
- Connect the PS5 Pro to the internet for initial pairing. Sony advises that an internet connection may be required when the drive is first paired with the console.
- Update system software. Sony advises using current PS5 system software. Complete any offered update before testing a game or movie disc.
- Insert the disc after setup completes. Use a supported PS4 game, supported PS5 game or one of the supported movie formats. The console should recognize the disc and present the relevant game or video playback option.
- Keep the disc available when required. For a physical game, the disc remains the physical copy you are using; removing it can prevent continued use of that disc-based title.
The important distinction is that pairing and software preparation happen once for the hardware, whereas disc insertion is part of normal use. If you move the drive to another console or reinstall it, follow Sony’s current instructions rather than assuming the previous pairing state carries over.

This makes the purchase decision depend on how you own your media. Someone with only downloaded games may never need the drive. Someone with a shelf of PS4 discs, 4K movie discs or standard Blu-rays needs it to use that collection on PS5 Pro.

Common problems and practical checks
The console does not recognize a disc
- Confirm that CFI-ZDD1 is installed and fully seated according to its instructions.
- Restart the console after installation or a system-software update.
- Check that the disc is one of the supported categories: a supported PS4 game, supported PS5 game, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray or DVD.
- If the drive is new, verify that initial internet pairing has completed.
A PS4 game will not run
- Check the exact title against Sony’s compatibility information; the library exceeds 8,500 games but is not universal.
- Make sure the disc drive is attached. A physical disc cannot be used by the base PS5 Pro.
- Install current system software, then try the disc again.
- Remember that a supported game may still lack some PS4 functionality on PS5.
A Blu-ray works but 3D does not
That behavior is expected under Sony’s stated limitation: 3D stereoscopic output is not supported. Test with a standard Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray if you want ordinary movie playback rather than 3D presentation.
The drive was purchased but setup cannot finish
Reconnect the console to the internet and confirm that system software is current. Initial pairing can require online access, so an offline first-time setup may not complete. If the console still cannot pair the drive after those checks, use the accessory’s installation and support documentation for the applicable hardware revision.
What to verify before buying the drive
- Your media is physical: Count the PS4 games and movie discs you actually intend to use.
- The PS4 titles are supported: Check each game, especially older or niche releases, rather than relying only on the overall “over 8,500” figure.
- You want the right movie format: CFI-ZDD1 supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD, but not 3D stereoscopic output.
- You can complete online setup: Plan for internet access during initial drive pairing and keep system software current.
- You have checked local stock and price: Sony identifies the compatible model, but retailer availability and pricing differ by region and date.
Bottom line for PS4 and Blu-ray owners
PS5 Pro can replace a PS4 disc-compatible console and a 4K Blu-ray player, but only with the separately sold CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive. Add the drive, complete its initial internet pairing with current system software, and then use supported PS4 discs plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD movies. Without the drive, PS5 Pro is limited to digital software and cannot read any physical game or movie disc.
