Saved data is different: a downloaded game’s progress can be restored only if a copy exists in PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a local backup. PlayStation says streamed-game saves are stored by PlayStation.
What PlayStation Support can restore

These are separate recovery questions: restoring an account can make its purchases accessible, but it does not recreate a save that was never copied anywhere.
What to do first if your PlayStation account was stolen
- Secure the email account tied to PlayStation. If you received an account-change email you did not initiate, change the email password. If you cannot, contact your email provider. PlayStation explains this advice on its compromised account guidance.
- Start PlayStation account recovery. Use the account recovery flow if you can access your registered email. If you cannot use your passkey, open a recovery message, or remember your sign-in email, contact PlayStation using its Online Assistant. Report unfamiliar changes to your sign-in ID, online ID, or password there.
- Secure the account and payment methods. If a console was stolen, PlayStation advises signing out of all devices, deactivating consoles, and considering removing payment methods. If you cannot access the account to do this, contact Support promptly through the compromised account support route.
- Check purchases after access is restored. Review Game Library and transaction history. The PlayStation Store service list can also show content applied to the account but not downloaded, such as season passes or in-game currency. If an item is still missing, contact Support with purchase details and a screenshot or video showing the issue.
- Check where each save was stored. For downloaded PS4 and PS5 games, saves reside on console storage unless uploaded or backed up. Check PlayStation Plus online storage or an existing PS4 USB backup; for streamed games, see the streamed-save details below.
How to tell whether a saved game can be restored
PlayStation Plus cloud storage
A cloud save helps only if it was uploaded before the incident and is still available. PlayStation’s Canadian cloud-storage guidance lists capacities of 100 GB for PS4 saved data and 100 GB for PS5 saved data, plus a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are storage limits, not a guarantee that any particular save was uploaded. See PlayStation Plus online storage for PS4 consoles. Menu names and availability can vary by region, console software, game, and subscription status.
Local PS4 USB backup
A USB backup can help only if you made it before losing the console or its data. PlayStation says a PS4 backup requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with at least twice the storage space used by the backup file. Its transfer guidance says PS4 saves can be copied to USB, but PS5 saves cannot be copied from the PS5 console to USB. A new drive cannot recover access to an account, replace a stolen console, or recreate progress whose only copy is gone. USB backup is a preventive copy, not an account-recovery method.
Streamed PlayStation Plus games
PlayStation says saved data for streamed PlayStation Plus games is stored on PlayStation. Downloaded games use console storage instead. Moving a save between a streamed and downloaded version requires copying it through online storage; consult PlayStation Plus PC streaming support for the applicable procedure and availability.

If you cannot sign in or find purchased content
PlayStation’s recovery guidance says: “If you can’t access your email address to open a 2SV email or password reset email, or if you’ve forgotten your email address, please contact us using our Online Assistant.” Go to Recover account for that route. If account access returns but content remains missing, check the transaction record and the Store service list before contacting Support with the purchase details and evidence of the issue.
