Yes. Proton VPN supports BitTorrent, but only on its dedicated P2P servers. According to Proton’s support guidance, those servers are available on paid plans, and free-plan users can’t use them. Connect to a server marked with the double-arrow P2P icon, then set up your torrent client so its traffic really goes through the VPN.

What you need before you start

  • A paid Proton VPN plan. Proton says dedicated P2P servers are a paid-plan feature.
  • A P2P-enabled server. In the Proton VPN apps these carry a two-way (double) arrow icon.
  • A torrent client that can bind to a network interface (qBittorrent is the example Proton uses), if you want the strongest protection against leaks.

Step 1: Connect to a P2P server

Proton warns that traffic may be blocked on servers that don’t support P2P. If you start a torrent on the wrong server, you may see the error “No P2P traffic permitted on this server.” That message simply means the server isn’t P2P-enabled. Disconnect and pick a server with the P2P icon instead.

Step 2: Bind your torrent client to the VPN interface

If your client lets you choose a network interface, select the Proton VPN adapter rather than the default. Proton’s support article uses qBittorrent as its example and gives a specific warning: choosing your normal internet interface can expose your real IP address, even when the kill switch is turned on. The exact menu names differ between clients, so look for an option such as “network interface” or “bind to interface” in the connection or advanced settings.

What peers see: Proton states that other peers see the VPN server’s IP address rather than yours. That holds only when the client’s traffic is routed through the VPN, which is why the interface setting matters.

Step 3: Decide whether you need port forwarding

Port forwarding is optional. It allows incoming connections and may improve how well your client connects to peers, but you don’t need it to use BitTorrent through Proton VPN.

  • Per Proton’s guide, it requires a P2P server and a paid plan.
  • Proton says the feature is available in its official Windows, macOS and Linux desktop (GUI) apps. Platform support can change, so confirm in your app if you’re on another system.
  • After enabling it, enter the active port number in your torrent client. Where the client’s instructions require it, turn off UPnP/NAT-PMP on your router.
  • The assigned port usually changes when you reconnect, so you may need to update the client each time.
  • A port-checking tool may show the port as closed if no application is listening on it. That alone doesn’t prove the setup failed; check with the client running and listening.

Proton acknowledges that port forwarding carries some security risk. It says the risk is low for torrenting and that its implementation isn’t vulnerable to “Port Fail.” That’s Proton’s own assessment, not an independent test.

What Proton says about logging

Proton’s no-logs page says it does not log the websites you visit, the content of your traffic or communications, your IP address, session lengths, or location-based information. Treat this as a provider claim. It is not a guarantee of anonymity.

What a VPN does not do for torrenting

  • It doesn’t make sharing lawful. Proton’s pages explain routing and configuration; they don’t say any particular torrent is legal. Copyright rules depend on your country and on the rights status of the file.
  • It doesn’t check the file. A VPN won’t remove malware from a download, so scan files as you would otherwise.
  • It doesn’t fix a misconfigured client. If the client uses the wrong interface, your real IP can leak.

Quick troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to do
“No P2P traffic permitted on this server” Connected to a non-P2P server Switch to a server with the double-arrow icon
Can’t find P2P servers Free plan Dedicated P2P servers require a paid plan
Poor peer connectivity No incoming connections Optionally enable port forwarding and enter the port in the client
Port stopped working Port changed after reconnecting Enter the new active port in the client
Port checker shows “closed” Nothing listening on the port Run the client with the port set, then retest
