Yes—sometimes. Revoking an agent’s authorization can stop it from getting new credentials without immediately invalidating credentials it already has. Whether it can keep making calls depends on the credential type, its remaining lifetime, how the service checks revocation, and how quickly the change propagates. For example, Microsoft Entra access tokens are one hour by default, while Google Cloud service-account access tokens are valid for up to 60 minutes by default or up to 12 hours under an extended-lifetime policy.
Why can an agent still act after I revoke access?
Many agents call tools and APIs by presenting a bearer credential: whoever holds it can use it, subject to the credential’s scope and the resource’s rules. Revoking consent, disabling an account, or removing a service identity can block future credential issuance. It does not necessarily invalidate a credential that has already been issued.
If the API accepts that credential without checking whether it has since been revoked, the agent may continue calling the API until the credential expires. If the resource server checks revocation or receives a continuous-access-evaluation or deny signal, it may reject the credential sooner. The result depends on the provider and the credential—not on a universal, immediate “off” switch.
There can also be more than one layer of access. An agent may have an identity-provider token, an application session, a tool-specific credential, and queued work waiting to run. Stopping one layer does not automatically stop every other layer. A reliable shutdown therefore addresses the agent’s identity, credentials, sessions, and workload.

Does revoking OAuth access kill a running agent immediately?
Not necessarily. Revoking a grant or refresh token generally prevents future authorization or token renewal; an access token already issued may remain usable until it expires or the resource rejects it through a revocation check or another control.
Microsoft Learn describes the distinction for Microsoft Entra: users of access tokens lose access when the token expires. Microsoft’s documented default access-token lifetime is one hour. That is a default pattern, not a promise that every token lasts exactly one hour or that every service waits for expiry.
Microsoft Graph’s revokeSignInSessions operation invalidates refresh tokens and browser cookies, but Microsoft says there may be a small delay of a few minutes before revocation takes effect. Microsoft Security also notes that a revoked Azure AD refresh token can leave the associated access token valid for up to an hour unless near-real-time continuous access evaluation applies.

RFC 7009 requires authorization servers to support refresh-token revocation and recommends support for access-token revocation. RFC 9700 recommends refresh-token rotation or sender-constrained tokens; rotation invalidates the previous refresh token and can help detect replay. These measures improve control, but they do not establish an instant cutoff for every already-issued access token.

How does revocation differ by credential type?
Check what the agent actually presents to each service. “Revoke access” can mean several different operations, and the effect of each one depends on whether the credential is checked online, how long it lasts, and whether the application maintains a separate session.
| Credential | What revocation can stop | What may remain usable | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delegated OAuth access token | New grants or, depending on the provider, acceptance after a revocation check | An already-issued token that the resource accepts until expiry | Microsoft Entra access tokens are one hour by default; actual behavior depends on resource checks and applicable controls. |
| OAuth refresh token | Renewal of access tokens | Access tokens already issued from it | Microsoft Graph session revocation can take a few minutes to take effect. |
| Service-account or workload access token | New token issuance after disabling or deleting the identity, or applying a deny control | An already-issued access token until it expires or is rejected | Google Cloud: up to 60 minutes by default, or up to 12 hours with an extended token-lifetime policy. |
| Long-lived API key | Calls using the old key after it is revoked or rotated and the change takes effect | Calls made with a still-valid copy of the key | UK NCSC warns that long-term keys can grant indefinite access if compromised and recommends short-lived, automatically rotated credentials. |
| Application session | Access after the application revokes its own session | A session the application has not invalidated | The identity provider cannot directly revoke a session token issued and controlled by the application. |
Delegated OAuth: access and refresh tokens are not interchangeable
An access token authorizes calls to a resource. A refresh token is used to obtain new access tokens. Revoking the refresh token can cut off renewal, but an access token already presented to an API may still work. Microsoft’s OAuth flow documentation says access tokens are short-lived and refresh tokens can be revoked or expire; clients need to handle token-endpoint errors rather than assume renewal will always succeed.
Service accounts: disabling the identity may not cancel issued tokens
Google Cloud warns that disabling or deleting a service account blocks access but does not by itself make existing service-account access tokens expire sooner. Those tokens remain valid until expiry: up to 60 minutes by default, or up to 12 hours when an extended token-lifetime policy is configured. Google also warns that suspending a user or resetting a password alone does not invalidate access tokens already controlled by an attacker. Direct token revocation and session controls are needed.

API keys and app sessions: look beyond the identity provider
A long-lived key is a separate credential to rotate or revoke; disabling the user who originally created it may not be enough. Likewise, a web application can issue its own session token. The application, not just the identity provider, must revoke a session it issued and controls. Inventory every credential and session the agent can use rather than treating one account-level action as a complete shutdown.

How long can an AI agent use a token after I disable it?
There is no single duration. The useful upper bound is the token’s remaining lifetime when access is revoked, unless the resource rejects it earlier. That bound varies with the credential, the provider’s configuration, and the specific resource’s revocation behavior.
- Microsoft Entra access tokens: one hour by default, according to Microsoft Learn.
- Google Cloud service-account access tokens: up to 60 minutes by default, or up to 12 hours with an extended token-lifetime policy.
- Microsoft Graph session and refresh-token revocation: Microsoft documents a small delay of a few minutes before it takes effect.
- Application sessions and API keys: the application or key provider controls invalidation; there is no common duration established for all systems.
These figures describe documented defaults, maximums, or propagation guidance for the named systems—not a general expiry schedule for every AI agent. The agent may also use a different credential for another tool, so one token’s expiry does not establish when all of its activity stops.
What should I do when I need to stop an agent now?
Use a layered response. Stop new authorization, invalidate credentials that can be revoked, block remaining access where possible, and stop work already queued in the agent’s orchestration layer. Preserve logs so you can determine what the agent did before and after the change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Stop new authorization. Disable the relevant user or service account, app registration, or authorization grant. Choose the identity that actually issued the agent’s credentials.
- Revoke renewal and sessions. Revoke refresh tokens and invalidate browser or application sessions. If an application manages its own session, use its session-revocation control as well as the identity provider’s controls.
- Apply an immediate access barrier where available. Use provider deny policies or continuous-access-evaluation controls that apply to the resource. Do not assume they are available or effective for every service.
- Rotate long-lived secrets. Revoke or rotate API keys, service-account keys, and other long-lived credentials. Deploy replacements safely for legitimate workloads; do not leave a compromised old key active while arranging the replacement.
- Stop agent-side work. Cancel queued jobs and revoke tool-specific credentials in the orchestration layer. Otherwise, the agent may keep retrying or may have another credential available.
- Review and preserve activity records. Examine calls around the revocation event. Keep token IDs, subject, scope, resource, timestamp, and authorization decision where available, so you can distinguish accepted calls from rejected ones.
- Keep the identity disabled through the residual window. Account for the maximum relevant token lifetime and the provider’s documented propagation delay before restoring access.
A password reset or account suspension alone may not be enough if an attacker or agent already holds an access token. Google Cloud explicitly cautions against relying on those steps alone in that situation. The response should target the token, session, key, or other credential already in use.

How can I design an agent so revocation works more reliably?
Make credentials short-lived and narrowly scoped, and put tool access behind controls you can observe and stop. The goal is to limit both what the agent can do and how long a credential remains useful after a decision to revoke it.
Issue less powerful credentials for less time
Use short-lived credentials issued close to execution time, with only the permissions and resources the task needs. Avoid long-term keys where a short-lived, automatically rotated credential is available. The UK National Cyber Security Centre warns that long-term access keys may grant indefinite access if compromised.
Constrain renewal and delegation
Use refresh-token rotation or sender-constrained tokens where supported, and avoid giving an agent broad or reusable delegated access when a narrower grant can do the job. Rotation makes a previously used refresh token unusable and can help expose replay, but it does not substitute for stopping access tokens already issued.
Centralize the decision and make it observable
A centralized authorization gateway can provide one place to enforce access decisions and record tool calls. Pair it with a kill switch that cancels queued work, and ensure logs cover the agent’s subject, scopes, target resource, timestamps, and allow-or-deny decisions. These controls help operators understand what was stopped and what may still be in flight.

NIST IR 8587 (2026) recommends token-lifecycle controls, compromise detection, revocation, and propagation of revocation to connected systems. It also warns that cutting off every distributed stateless token can be technically difficult. OpenID agentic-system material similarly emphasizes short-lived credentials, constrained delegation, centralized gateways, and end-to-end telemetry. The practical implication is to plan for bounded residual access and layered containment rather than assume revocation is instantaneous everywhere.
What should you verify before connecting an agent to a tool?
Ask how the tool authenticates the agent and what event actually makes an existing credential stop working. A useful review is specific to each connected resource; an agent’s main sign-in method may not reveal a separate API key or application session.
- What credential does the agent present: delegated access token, service-account token, API key, application session, or more than one?
- What is its lifetime, and can an administrator configure a shorter one?
- Does the resource check revocation or accept a token until expiry?
- What propagation delay does the provider document for token, session, or policy revocation?
- Can a deny policy or continuous-access-evaluation control block calls after a credential was issued?
- Can the agent be limited to specific resources and actions, and are renewal credentials rotated or sender-constrained?
- Can operators cancel queued jobs and inspect a complete record of each tool call?
These checks separate “the account can no longer request access” from “the resource will reject every credential the agent already holds.” That distinction is the core of a dependable revocation plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will revoking an AI agent undo actions it already completed?
No. Revocation controls future authorization; it does not reverse a change that a tool has already accepted. If an action needs to be undone, handle that through the affected service’s recovery or audit process.
Can I tell whether an agent used a credential after revocation?
Check the resource and identity logs around the revocation timestamp, including the token or subject identifier, target resource, scope, and allow-or-deny result when available. A recorded revocation event alone does not establish that every resource received or enforced it at the same moment.
Should I delete an agent’s app registration to stop it?
Only if that registration is the identity or authorization path the agent actually uses. First identify any separate service accounts, API keys, application sessions, and tool-specific credentials; removing one identity object may not affect credentials issued through another path.
What is the difference between revoking consent and revoking a token?
Revoking consent removes or changes the authorization grant used to obtain access, while token revocation targets a credential that has already been issued. Some systems provide both controls, and using only one may leave another credential or session usable.
