Sometimes, but never by default. Literary-award eligibility depends on the specific prize, category, submission cycle, and what the AI actually did. The Nebula Awards, the Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction, and the North Carolina Writers’ Network (NCWN) reject machine-generated text under their stated policies. SFWA’s amended rule goes further: any work written wholly or partly with a generative large language model (LLM) is ineligible, and disclosure of LLM use results in disqualification. Other contests, such as the Traver Award, permit limited assistance but leave the final decision to administrators and judges. Grammar-only tools may be treated differently from text generation, yet that distinction is not universal. Before entering, read the current rules, document every AI use, and obtain a written ruling when the policy is unclear.
Why is there no universal answer about AI and literary awards?
Award organizations set their own definitions of authorship, acceptable assistance, disclosure, and eligibility. One prize may prohibit any generated wording, another may allow sentence-level editing, and a third may not publish a general AI rule at all. Rules can also change between award years, so an older explanation or a policy from a different contest cannot establish eligibility for your entry.
The practical question is not simply whether you used “AI.” It is what the tool produced, whether that output entered the submitted work, whether the tool translated or rewrote your language, whether disclosure is required, and who has authority to decide borderline cases. A compliant AI posture also cannot fix an entry that fails ordinary requirements such as publication territory, format, author status, category, or submission channel.

Which major awards explicitly ban AI-generated writing?
Several prominent prizes use language that excludes generated text rather than merely requiring a disclosure. Their policies differ in scope, but each can make an otherwise strong manuscript ineligible.

Nebula Awards: human authorship is mandatory
The Nebula rules effective for the award year beginning January 1, 2026 state that all works must be human-authored. A work written or translated, “in whole or in part,” using generative AI or LLMs is not eligible. SFWA guidance treats creating draft language, automatically changing tone or style, and summarizing or rewriting passages as disqualifying uses, not harmless editorial support.
This is a bright-line eligibility rule. If a model supplied language that remains in the nominated work, or translated material into the submitted form, the entry falls outside the stated requirement even if the author substantially revised the result.
SFWA’s amended rule: disclosure does not create permission
In an amended-rules notice dated December 19, 2025, SFWA president Kate Ristau stated: “Works that are written, either wholly or partially, by generative large language model (LLM) tools are not eligible.” The same notice says: “Works that used LLMs at any point during the writing process must disclose this upon acceptance of the nomination, and those works will be disqualified.”

Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction: generated text and AI phrasing in translation are excluded
The prize’s official overview says, “AI-generated text is not eligible for the prize. Translations using AI-generated phrasing are also not eligible.” The award otherwise requires a book-length imaginative-fiction work by a single author, published or distributed in the United States in English or in an English translation, first released in the previous calendar year, and available through multiple US retail channels.
The translation clause closes a common loophole: submitting an originally human-written book does not solve the problem if an AI system supplied phrasing in the English version. Check both the language of the source manuscript and the language of the edition being entered.

NCWN: core machine-generated elements are not accepted
NCWN says it will not accept or recognize material created using generative AI or containing machine-generated text. Its examples include AI-generated outlines, characters, plot arcs, dialogue, descriptions, and other core elements. The network’s general statement distinguishes those uses from technologies intended to refine human-created material, such as spelling or grammar correction, unless the rules for a particular contest say otherwise.
NCWN therefore illustrates a material distinction: generating the substance of a story is treated differently from correcting surface errors in text you wrote. Because its statement is a general policy, the contest-specific instructions still control.
Which contests allow limited AI assistance?
The Traver Award’s published AI policy permits tools to assist with refining sentence structure, finding alternative phrasing, or generating ideas. It warns that over-reliance can dilute an author’s voice, encourages transparency before submission, and gives administrators and judges sole discretion to decide whether an entry is permissible. They may disqualify work that appears AI-generated.
This is permission with conditions, not a guarantee. A tool’s allowed function does not automatically make every resulting passage acceptable, and a judge can reach a different conclusion if the entry reads as machine-generated or the assistance exceeds the policy’s intent. Verify the policy for the specific contest cycle before relying on it.
How do awards distinguish generation, editing, translation, and grammar correction?
There is no shared worldwide definition of “AI-assisted writing.” Use the following categories to describe your process precisely when reading a rule or asking an administrator:

Do not describe a rewriting model as a “grammar checker” if it proposes new sentences, changes voice, or compresses passages. The operational facts—what you submitted, what the model returned, and what you accepted—are more useful than the product label.

What should I check before entering an award?
Use this sequence for every prize and every cycle. Save a copy of the rules you relied on, because an online page can be amended after you begin a submission.
- Locate the current cycle and category rules. Read the definitions, eligibility section, AI language, disclosure instructions, and submission declaration. Confirm that the rule applies to your category rather than to a different competition run by the same organization.
- Map your actual AI use. Separate human-written passages from generated, translated, rewritten, summarized, tone-adjusted, brainstormed, and grammar-corrected material. Include tools used by collaborators, translators, or editors.
- Preserve evidence. Keep dated drafts, version history, prompts, outputs, and notes showing what you retained or rejected. Record the tool name, date, purpose, and the portion of the manuscript affected.
- Compare your use with the rule’s verbs. Terms such as “written,” “translated,” “created,” “containing,” “at any point,” and “refine” can produce different outcomes. A rule covering use “at any point during the writing process” is broader than one limited to text appearing in the final file.
- Ask in writing when the policy is ambiguous. Describe the exact action—for example, correcting spelling without accepting suggested rewrites—and ask whether the entry remains eligible. Keep the reply with your submission records; a general statement from a different contest is not an answer.
- Decide whether disclosure is required and what it does. Disclosure may trigger disqualification, as under SFWA’s current rule, or invite discretionary review, as under the Traver policy. Never treat a disclosure field as evidence that the use is automatically permitted.
- Verify ordinary eligibility. Check publication date, territory, language, format, author requirements, category, and who is allowed to submit. An AI-compliant manuscript can still be rejected for a separate eligibility defect.
Can I enter if AI only edited my story?
Sometimes, but the answer turns on the kind of editing and the award’s wording. A narrowly defined spelling or grammar correction may fit NCWN’s stated exception for refining human-created material. An LLM that rewrites sentences, changes tone, summarizes sections, or supplies replacement prose can fall under the prohibitions described by SFWA and other awards.
Make a before-and-after record and ask the award office before submission if the tool did more than flag a typo. If the award bans LLM use at any point, even editing that never appears verbatim may still create an eligibility problem; SFWA’s amended notice uses that broad timing language.

What happens if I disclose AI use?
Disclosure has no single legal or procedural effect. Under SFWA’s December 19, 2025 amended notice, disclosure of LLM use leads to disqualification. Under the Traver policy, transparency helps administrators evaluate the entry, but they still have sole discretion and can reject it. Other organizations may require a statement, ask for records, or provide no published process at all.
Write a factual disclosure rather than a marketing description: identify the tool, dates, functions, affected sections, and whether any output remains. If the rules do not explain the consequence, ask before entering and retain the answer.
What ordinary eligibility problems can AI rules not fix?

How should authors handle a manuscript already edited with AI?
Stop further processing until you know the award’s position. Export the pre-AI version, preserve the prompts and outputs, and mark every passage that changed. If the policy permits only human-authored text, restore the human version and confirm that the rule does not also prohibit use at any point in the writing process; SFWA’s wording does.
If the policy allows limited assistance, ask whether your specific edits fit its definition and whether disclosure is required. For a contest with discretionary review, provide the requested account before submission rather than waiting for a judge to infer the tool’s role from the prose.
How often should I recheck an award’s AI policy?
Recheck immediately before submitting and again if the organization announces an amendment. The SFWA notice dated December 19, 2025 demonstrates that a policy can change from a narrower ban on wholly written works to coverage of partial use.
