Yes—a malicious website can exploit an unpatched iPhone browser flaw. But that is not the same as saying ordinary websites routinely hack iPhones. Some documented attacks required a person to tap a link and load exploit content in Safari; other high-profile spyware infections used zero-click routes through services such as iMessage, without a website visit or tap. These were targeted exploit chains, not evidence that simply browsing normally puts every iPhone at risk.
How have websites and other exploits compromised iPhones?
An attacker can serve specially crafted content that abuses a flaw in vulnerable browser software such as WebKit. Depending on the flaw and the rest of the exploit chain, a browser exploit may be one step toward a more serious compromise. The route matters: WebKit can also be invoked while a phone processes content in a messaging app, so the presence of a WebKit exploit does not by itself mean the victim visited a website.
Citizen Lab’s reports document several distinct cases. They show that these techniques have existed, not how common infections are across iPhones generally.
| Case | Delivery route and required action | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Trident (2016) | The target tapped a malicious SMS link; Safari loaded exploit content. | A clear example of a user-clicked link leading to a WebKit exploit and later spyware stages, as documented by Citizen Lab. |
| HOMAGE and other activity (2017–2020) | Zero-click iMessage activity against Catalan targets; HOMAGE launched a WebKit instance through message and photo-stream processing. | WebKit can be involved without the person opening a website. Citizen Lab reported these as zero-click attacks. |
| FORCEDENTRY (2021) | A zero-click iMessage exploit abused Apple’s image-rendering path. | Apple identified the flaw as CVE-2021-30860 and patched it in iOS 14.8; this was not a victim-clicked website attack, according to Citizen Lab’s reporting. |
| BLASTPASS (2023) | Malicious PassKit image attachments arrived through iMessage; no interaction was required. | Citizen Lab reported that the chain could compromise iOS 16.6 and that Apple confirmed Lockdown Mode blocked this specific attack. |
| Reported Pegasus infection (2026) | Citizen Lab reported an activist’s infection through an iMessage zero-click exploit. | Citizen Lab said the vulnerability was subsequently patched in iOS 18.4.1. |
Can your iPhone be hacked just by opening a link?
It is possible if the link leads to exploit content and the phone is running software vulnerable to that particular flaw. A link is not automatically an infection: the result depends on the exploit, the device’s software state, and whether the attacker’s chain succeeds. The Trident case is a documented example of a target tapping a malicious link that opened exploit content in Safari; it does not establish that tapping arbitrary links compromises iPhones.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Apple’s April 14, 2026 support advisory, “Update iOS to protect your iPhone from web attacks,” says the reported web attacks were addressed by software updates and that devices kept up to date were not at risk from those specific attacks. That statement applies to the attacks covered by the advisory, not to every possible future vulnerability.
Can an iPhone be hacked without clicking anything?
Yes. A zero-click exploit takes advantage of software that automatically processes content, so the victim need not tap a link or open a website. Citizen Lab’s reports on HOMAGE, FORCEDENTRY, BLASTPASS, and the 2026 Pegasus infection describe such routes involving iMessage or content processing. These incidents should not be conflated with browser attacks: the entry point and the user action required were different.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Apple has described the system-level iOS attacks it observes in the wild as highly sophisticated exploit chains associated with mercenary spyware and aimed at very few targeted individuals. That is Apple’s account of attacks it observes, not a complete measure of all iPhone attacks or a prevalence estimate.
How to protect an iPhone from web exploits and spyware
Install the latest iOS version available for your device
Apple calls keeping software up to date the single most important action for product security. On iPhone, check Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest version offered for that device. If it cannot run the newest major iOS release, install the latest compatible security update. Apple’s advisory describes protections across supported versions and gives version-specific instructions that may change, so use its current guidance for older devices.

Keep Safari’s built-in protection in perspective
Apple says Safari Safe Browsing is on by default and blocks malicious URL domains Apple has identified in the attacks covered by its advisory. It is a useful additional safeguard, not a replacement for installing updates.
Consider Lockdown Mode only if your risk warrants it
Apple positions Lockdown Mode for the very small number of people who may be personally targeted by highly sophisticated spyware; its support guidance says most people will never be targeted by attacks of this nature. It reduces some attack surface by restricting features in apps, websites, and other functions, but that comes with a loss of convenience or capability. Excluding a site or app from Lockdown Mode reduces some restrictions and may increase risk. It is not a routine requirement for every iPhone owner.

What to do if you have a credible reason to suspect targeting
A generic scanner or online checklist cannot establish that a particular iPhone is clean. The cited forensic cases were assessed using device artifacts and specialist analysis, and they do not provide a universal consumer self-test.
- Preserve relevant alerts and other evidence rather than deleting it.
- Seek help from a qualified digital-security or incident-response specialist if you have a credible reason to believe you are specifically targeted.
- Install the latest compatible iOS update as soon as possible, while following Apple’s current advice for your device.
For most people, the practical distinction is straightforward: a malicious site can exploit an unpatched browser flaw, but a reported exploit from years ago is not proof that the same attack still works on a patched phone—or that a person who browses the web has been infected.
