The campaign is included with the full base game in every current Modern Warfare 4 edition: Digital Standard, Physical Standard, and Digital Vault. Vault does not add campaign missions or a paid map-pack pass; it adds cosmetic items, one season of BlackCell, and a DMZ bonus. If you only want the campaign and core modes, Standard is enough. As of October 2026, Modern Warfare 4 has launched, costs $69.99 US for Standard, and is not scheduled to join Game Pass until Holiday 2027.

Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch; Xbox lists it for Holiday 2027. The comparison above is about that current annual game unless a row says otherwise.
Which Call of Duty edition includes the campaign?
Every full-game edition of Modern Warfare 4 includes the campaign. That means you do not need Vault, a special campaign SKU, or a separate story add-on to play it.
Activision Support describes Digital Standard as including the “full base game,” and says the Physical Edition includes the full base game on the chosen platform. Vault includes the same base game plus rewards. Xbox lists Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ as features of Modern Warfare 4; they are not Vault-only modes. Xbox describes campaign settings ranging from trench warfare in Korea to close-quarters combat in New York, chases in Paris, and raids in Mumbai.

The same broad rule applies to recent annual releases in this buying mix. Black Ops 6 (25 October 2024) includes its Campaign, Multiplayer, and Round-Based Zombies in Standard/Cross-Gen. Black Ops 7 (14 November 2025) includes its Co-Op Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies in the base game. The campaign is part of the game, not a premium-edition bonus.
What does Vault add, and is it the DLC edition?
Vault is a premium bundle layered on top of the base game. It does not provide a longer or different campaign, a separate multiplayer version, or a traditional paid map-pack season pass.
Modern Warfare 4 Vault contents
Modern Warfare 4 Vault includes two operator packs, a Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell, and a DMZ Deployment Bonus. The operator packs include multiple character variants and local-language voice packs; the weapon collection includes five named weapons.
- Hostile Alliance Operator Pack: Price (two variants), Valeria (two variants), Ghost, and Blix.
- Special Forces Operator Pack: COM SFT (France), KSK Amphibious (Germany), South Korean Special Forces, and SAS (United Kingdom), with local-language voice packs.
- Signature Weapon Collection: Kastov 762 “Voltspine,” ISO Nightshade “La Sombra Venenosa,” Rezi 12 “Shattered Code,” Oris 8.6 “Volt-Edge,” and Combat Knife “Sombra Besada.”
- BlackCell for one season: a Battle Pass with 100+ rewards, 1,100 COD Points, 20 Battle Pass Tier Skips, and an exclusive operator, blueprint, and BlackCell variants.
- DMZ Deployment Bonus: one extra Active Duty slot and a Deployment Kit containing two Weapon Insurance Contracts, two Operator Rescue Beacons, two Fulton Drop Markers, two Medium Backpacks, and two 2-Plate Carriers.
The official BlackCell terms say redemption applies to one season of the Modern Warfare 4 Battle Pass only. The items become accessible in-game when the Season 1 Battle Pass is available; a calendar date for that season was not stated in the official copy described here. BlackCell is not extra campaign content.
What “DLC” means in recent Call of Duty editions
“Which edition has the DLC?” often reflects the older paid map-pack or Season Pass model. Recent editions do not sell Vault as a bundle of paid map packs. Post-launch maps, weapons, and mode content arrive through seasonal updates to the base game. GameRant reported in October 2026 that Black Ops 7’s post-launch seasons had added multiplayer maps, weapons, and Zombies content to the base game.

Vault’s add-ons are chiefly cosmetic or tied to progression and a mode. Activision has not published a combined cash value for the Vault extras, so there is no official savings figure to use when deciding whether the bundle is worthwhile.
What is the difference between Standard and Vault?
For campaign access and the core game, there is no difference: both editions include the same base game. The choice is whether to pay more for Vault’s extras and whether you want a digital purchase or a disc.

For Modern Warfare 4, US listed prices are $69.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Vault. Activision lists the digital Vault upgrade at $30 US SRP, which is why buying Standard digitally and deciding later can preserve flexibility. The physical edition cannot be upgraded. The former 10% loyalty discount applied to qualifying preorders only and ended on 23 October 2026; it did not apply to upgrades.
Should I buy Standard, Vault, or use Game Pass?
Choose based on what you will actually use: Standard covers the game, Vault is for its bundle, and Game Pass is an option only when the particular title is in the catalog.
Choose Standard if the campaign is your priority
Standard is the direct choice for a campaign-first player or someone who wants the core modes without paying for cosmetics and Battle Pass extras. A physical Standard copy is also the only disc route for Modern Warfare 4. It contains the full base game, not a campaign-only trial.

Choose Vault if you value its extras
Vault may suit players who want the operator and weapon items, plan to use BlackCell for the relevant season, and expect to use the DMZ bonus. Its list price is $30 above Standard; whether the items justify that premium depends on your interest in them. There is no published official combined dollar valuation for the bundle.
BlackCell redemption is for one season, not all future seasons. If you consider a late upgrade, check which season the included redemption applies to and whether its Battle Pass is available in-game before assuming the benefit will match a future season.
Use Game Pass for a title already in the catalog
Game Pass provided the complete, Standard-level Black Ops 6 game to eligible subscribers, and Black Ops 7 remained available to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers at the time of this article. Subscribers do not get Vault automatically, though eligible players can buy a Vault upgrade.
Modern Warfare 4 is different: it was not available on Game Pass at launch on 23 October 2026. Xbox lists availability for Holiday 2027, so until then a subscriber who wants MW4 needs to buy the game rather than rely on the subscription. A Game Pass listing is a way to access a catalog game, not a Vault edition.
Can I upgrade Standard to Vault later?
Yes, if you bought the eligible digital Standard edition on the same platform. Activision’s listed US upgrade price is $30, and it can be purchased through the in-game or platform store. Game Pass players can also buy a Vault upgrade for supported titles such as Black Ops 6.

Physical copies are not eligible. Activision explicitly says Modern Warfare 4 physical editions cannot be upgraded to Vault. Do not assume that a retailer’s use of “Deluxe” on a disc listing means the disc includes Vault items: the official physical product is Standard, and the Vault edition is digital-only.
Is a physical Call of Duty copy different from digital?
For Modern Warfare 4, both Physical Standard and Digital Standard include the full base game. The difference is format and upgrade eligibility, not campaign access. Vault is digital-only, and there is no official physical Vault disc for Modern Warfare 4, Black Ops 6, or Modern Warfare III.
Cross-Gen is a separate platform-generation label used in years when a release supports both generations within a console family. Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 offered last-generation options. Modern Warfare 4 does not run on Xbox One or PlayStation 4, so it has no last-gen Cross-Gen edition. Xbox Play Anywhere means a qualifying Xbox purchase can be played on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC; it does not make the game an Xbox One release.
Check hardware before buying a disc. A physical copy cannot be played on an Xbox Series S or a digital-only PlayStation 5. For Black Ops 6, Activision’s format details also distinguish the PS5 disc from PS4 Cross-Gen packaging, which includes a PS5 digital code while still requiring the disc.

At the time of this article, subscribers could play Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 at the Standard/base-game level, while Modern Warfare 4 was set to join in Holiday 2027. That makes the subscription useful for playing the prior annual titles without buying a new full-price edition, but it does not include Vault extras.

Subscription tiers and prices can change. GameRant reported April 2026 prices of $22.99 per month for Ultimate and $13.99 per month for PC Game Pass after a price change; confirm Microsoft’s live price and catalog before subscribing or budgeting. Those figures are not a guarantee of current pricing.
What changed across recent Call of Duty editions?
The 2023–2026 pattern is two digital tiers plus a Standard physical disc: Digital Standard (or Cross-Gen on supported console years), Digital Vault, and Physical Standard. Modern Warfare III, released 10 November 2023, established the recent pattern of a full game in Standard and Vault, with extras in Vault. The same distinction carried into Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, then Modern Warfare 4.
Preorder bonuses can complicate old comparisons. For Modern Warfare 4, any digital edition preordered or prepurchased received campaign early access beginning 16 October 2026 and DMZ early access beginning 20 October 2026. These were timed digital benefits, not Vault-exclusive missions; physical preorders did not receive that early-access benefit. Since the game launched on 23 October, those early-access dates have passed and should not influence a purchase now.

How should I make the final choice?
- Campaign only or occasional multiplayer: get Standard, physical or digital. The campaign is already included.
- Disc collection: get Physical Standard, and confirm your console has a disc drive.
- Cosmetic collector or committed Battle Pass buyer: compare the $30 Vault premium with the items and one-season BlackCell benefit you expect to use.
- Digital buyer who is unsure: buy Digital Standard and retain the option of a same-platform upgrade later.
- Game Pass subscriber: check whether the title is in the catalog; Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 were available, but Modern Warfare 4 was not at launch and is scheduled for Holiday 2027.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an online subscription to play Modern Warfare 4?
PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential, or Nintendo Switch Online is required for social and online modes. That requirement does not by itself establish whether the single-player campaign needs an internet connection; do not assume Black Ops 6’s stated always-online campaign requirement applies to Modern Warfare 4.
Can I buy Modern Warfare 4 once and play it on Xbox and PC?
Xbox Play Anywhere supports playing a qualifying purchase on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. That is a console-and-PC entitlement, not support for Xbox One.
How long is the Modern Warfare 4 campaign?
Activision and Xbox’s cited product information does not give an official campaign runtime in hours. A specific number should be treated as an estimate from an independently identified playthrough, not as a published edition specification.
