Choose btop when you want a dashboard for CPU, memory, disks, network activity, processes, and (when your build supports it) GPU data. Choose htop when your priority is inspecting, filtering, sorting, and controlling processes in a compact interactive viewer. Both handle everyday process management; neither is proven faster or lighter by the official materials.
Your terminal, distribution package, and GPU prerequisites can change the practical choice. The guide below separates documented capabilities from assumptions so you can install the right tool and avoid display or hardware surprises.

What btop is built to show
The btop project describes itself as a resource monitor showing “usage and stats for processor, memory, disks, network and processes.” Its interface is organized as a broad overview rather than only a process list. The btop README lists mouse support, selectable process details, filtering and sorting, tree view, process signaling, pausing the process list, a settings menu, auto-scaled network graphs, disk-I/O activity and speeds, a battery meter, graph symbols, and presets.
That breadth matters when you are diagnosing a machine rather than a single runaway program. You can watch processor and memory pressure while checking whether the disk or network is actually busy, then select a process for more detail. The feature list is the project’s description; it is not an independent claim that every user will find btop easier to operate.
btop’s process workflow
btop still covers the common process tasks associated with a traditional process monitor. Its documented controls include process filtering, sorting, tree view, detailed statistics for the selected process, pausing the list, and sending signals. This is enough for finding a process, understanding its parent-child relationship, temporarily freezing the display while you read it, and issuing a signal when appropriate.
The distinction is visual emphasis: process control is presented inside a larger resource dashboard. If you spend most of a session scrolling a long process list, the surrounding graphs may be useful context but may also be more interface than you need.
What htop is built to show
htop is described by its project as a cross-platform interactive process viewer. Its README emphasizes a scrollable process list, horizontal scrolling for full command lines, CPU and memory information, system-wide load average, and swap usage. It also documents configurable display, interactive sorting and filtering, and process actions such as killing or renicing.
This process-centered layout is useful when your immediate question is “which process is consuming resources, and what should I do about it?” You can search for a name, narrow the visible list with a filter, change the sort column, expand a tree, inspect command-line arguments, and act on the selected process. Key assignments can vary with the installed version or configuration, so use the local help screen (h or F1) as the final authority.

Choose by the job you need to do
When btop is the better first install
- You want CPU, memory, storage, networking, and process information visible at the same time.
- Disk activity or network throughput is part of the incident you are investigating.
- You want an at-a-glance battery indicator on a supported system.
- You need GPU statistics and are prepared to verify the build and vendor-specific prerequisites.
- You prefer mouse interaction, configurable panels, graph presets, and a visual overview.
btop is especially appropriate for a workstation or server session where the question is broader than one process: for example, whether a memory spike coincides with swap use, disk pressure, or network traffic. Its graphs are useful only if your terminal renders the required characters correctly, so test it before standardizing it for remote or recovery work.
When htop is the better first install
- Your normal task is finding a process, reading its full command line, changing the sort, or applying a filter.
- You need a compact process-focused screen for routine administration.
- You use a terminal with unreliable Unicode or color rendering and want fewer display assumptions.
- You rely on htop’s documented process actions, including killing or renicing, and want those controls close to the process list.
htop is also a sensible fallback when a minimal rescue terminal cannot display btop’s preferred graph characters. This is a practical inference from the documented terminal requirements, not a benchmark showing that htop consumes fewer resources.
btop terminal requirements and display troubleshooting
The btop project recommends a terminal with 24-bit truecolor, wide-character support, UTF-8, and a font containing the relevant Braille Patterns, Geometric Shapes, and Box Drawing or Block Elements Unicode ranges. It supports conversion to 256 colors and documents a 16-color TTY mode. Braille characters are not required when you use TTY mode or graph styles based on blocks or TTY characters.

If graphs are clipped, misaligned, or unreadable
- Confirm that the terminal is using UTF-8 rather than a legacy character encoding.
- Switch to a font that includes the graph-related Unicode blocks listed by the project.
- Resize the terminal and check whether the problem is caused by a narrow window.
- Try a block or TTY graph style instead of Braille-based graphs.
- Use the documented 16-color TTY mode when truecolor or wide-character rendering is unreliable.
Web-based terminals, serial consoles, multiplexers, and emergency shells can handle these features differently. A btop session that looks correct in a desktop terminal may need a simpler graph mode elsewhere.

Does btop show GPU usage?
It can, but “btop supports GPU monitoring” is not a universal guarantee. The project says GPU monitoring requires a build with GPU support and lists Linux support plus macOS support for Apple Silicon GPUs. The actual binary must also be able to access the vendor’s interfaces.

For Linux x86_64, the project documents GPU support as enabled by default in its build configuration. That does not prove that a distributor’s package enabled every capability or that your machine has the required driver, library, and permissions. The README also says NVIDIA and AMD GPU support will not work with static linking. If GPU data is decisive, inspect the package build and dependencies on the target machine rather than assuming the feature is present.
htop dependencies and optional meters
htop identifies ncurses wide-character libraries as its fixed minimum runtime dependency. The project also documents optional Linux features—including sensors, capabilities, delay accounting, and systemd meters—that depend on build choices. A package built without one of those options may not expose the corresponding information even though another package does.

Installation examples and package choices
Package names and versions change with distribution repositories. Treat the commands below as examples documented by the projects, and check your distribution’s current package instructions before running them.
Install btop
- On Fedora, the btop README gives
sudo dnf install btopas an example. - On Homebrew, the project gives
brew install btop; the documented Homebrew route covers macOS and Linux x86_64. - For other Linux distributions, use the package or source routes listed in the btop README.
- If the repository package lacks a feature you need, build from source following that README and verify the resulting build options.
The project says to use elevated privileges only when installing to a directory you do not own. Do not add sudo automatically to a user-local source installation. Optional hardware access, such as Intel SYSFS reads, can require separate permissions even after the program itself is installed.

Install htop
- On Debian-based systems, the official downloads page gives
apt install htopas an example. - On Fedora-family systems, it gives
dnf install htop. - On Homebrew, it gives
brew install htop. - For source installation, follow the GNU Autotools process and distribution links on the htop downloads page.
The downloads page lists examples including Debian, Fedora, Red Hat/EPEL, Slackware, Gentoo, openSUSE, Arch Linux, and Homebrew on macOS. Listing a distribution does not freeze its package version; repository availability and build options remain time-dependent.
Platform and portability details
btop
The project lists Linux package and source routes, FreeBSD and NetBSD package routes, Homebrew on macOS and Linux x86_64, and build instructions that cover OpenBSD. It states that Linux release binaries are statically compiled with musl and work on kernel releases 2.6.39 and newer. That is a project compatibility claim for those release binaries, not a promise that every distribution package is current or identical.
htop
htop presents itself as cross-platform and provides source code plus distribution-provided binaries through its downloads page. The exact package version, optional meters, and compile-time features depend on the operating system and repository you select.
How to compare them on your own machine
If speed or memory footprint is your deciding factor, the available official material does not establish a fair winner. A useful local comparison should hold conditions constant:
- Install both from comparable sources, preferably the same distribution repository or two source builds with documented options.
- Run each in the same terminal size, font, color mode, and remote-session type.
- Observe idle behavior for the same period, then repeat while the host has a known workload.
- Record the monitor process’s CPU and resident memory with an external measurement tool rather than trusting the monitor to measure itself.
- Repeat after enabling or disabling optional GPU, sensor, or systemd integrations, because those features change what each build queries.
Do not turn one informal observation into a general claim that btop is faster, htop is lighter, or vice versa. Workload, refresh settings, terminal rendering, package compile options, and enabled meters can all affect the result.

Common pitfalls and fixes
“btop starts, but the graphs look broken”
Check UTF-8, the terminal font, window width, and graph style first. Move to block or TTY graphs and 16-color mode if Braille or truecolor rendering is unavailable.

“The GPU panel is empty”
Verify that the installed btop was built with GPU support, then check the vendor driver and required library. AMD systems may lack ROCm SMI in the distribution repository; Intel systems may need SYSFS permissions or capabilities. Static linking prevents the documented NVIDIA and AMD GPU support from working.
“htop does not show the meter I expected”
Optional sensors, capabilities, delay accounting, and systemd meters depend on build choices. Compare your package’s build and help output with the project’s documentation rather than assuming every htop binary includes every optional feature.
“A package command fails”
Package names, repositories, and versions are distribution-specific and change over time. Recheck the current package instructions for your release, or use the source directions on the relevant official project page.

Open the installed program’s help with h or F1. The documented htop quick-start keys can vary by version or configuration, and btop’s configurable interface can differ from a screenshot or tutorial.
Bottom line
btop is the stronger starting point for a broad, graph-rich view of a machine, especially when disk, network, battery, or supported GPU information belongs beside process data. htop is the better fit for a focused process-inspection and control workflow, particularly in terminals where Unicode and color rendering are uncertain. Install the one that matches your primary question, verify the package’s build features, and treat performance claims as unproven unless you measure both tools under identical conditions.
