Brent is the more internationally representative, seaborne benchmark; West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is the principal U.S. benchmark tied to physical delivery at Cushing, Oklahoma. Neither is universally “better.” Choose the one that matches the exposure you are actually trying to measure: Brent for globally traded cargoes, shipping and geopolitical supply risk; WTI for U.S. production, pipelines, inventories and domestic refining.
The difference between their prices is a location-and-logistics signal as much as a quality signal. For an investable comparison, align the delivery month, identify whether the quote is spot, futures, an index or a fund proxy, and account for currency, roll yield, margin and contango or backwardation.
What Brent and WTI actually are
Brent and WTI are reference prices used to value many other crude oils. A producer, refiner or trader normally starts with one benchmark and adds or subtracts a differential. That differential reflects the crude’s quality, transportation cost and local or global supply-and-demand conditions.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) identifies Brent, WTI and Dubai/Oman as three of the most significant crude-oil benchmarks. The benchmark quote is therefore not the delivered price of every barrel. It is a starting point for contracts whose final value depends on the grade, location, timing and commercial terms.

- Brent: a waterborne North Sea benchmark with access to ships, ports and storage. Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) describes it as the price barometer for about 80% of global crude.
- WTI: the North American light-sweet benchmark, with the NYMEX contract physically based on delivery at Cushing, Oklahoma.
Because the benchmarks represent different physical systems, their prices can diverge even when the global oil market appears balanced.

Why the two benchmarks have different geographic meaning
Brent is a seaborne network price
Brent is built around North Sea crude streams and waterborne delivery. A cargo can be loaded onto a tanker and moved to another consuming region, so the benchmark responds quickly to shipping availability, port access, sanctions, weather and disruptions along major sea routes. That makes Brent particularly informative for internationally traded crude and broad geopolitical supply risk.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →ICE’s description of Brent as a barometer for approximately 80% of global crude refers to its pricing influence, not to a claim that 80% of all barrels are physically Brent. Refineries may buy grades that differ materially from the benchmark but still negotiate them as Brent-linked cargoes with a quality and freight adjustment.
WTI is anchored to Cushing
WTI’s physical basis is Cushing, an inland storage and pipeline hub in Oklahoma. The NYMEX contract therefore reacts to barrels arriving at or leaving Cushing, available storage capacity, pipeline bottlenecks, U.S. production and the ability to move oil from inland hubs toward refineries or export terminals.
WTI can still matter outside the United States: U.S. crude exports, international refiners and global traders use the contract. Its defining feature is the Cushing delivery point, which gives the quote a more specific regional signal than a waterborne basket.
Quality matters, but it does not explain every price difference
WTI and the principal Brent streams are both generally described as light and sweet, meaning relatively low density and sulfur compared with heavier or more sour grades. However, “lighter” or “sweeter” does not create a permanent ranking between the two prices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The EIA lists several components of a crude differential:
- API gravity, a measure related to density;
- sulfur content and other quality characteristics;
- transportation costs from producing areas to refineries;
- regional and global supply and demand;
- refinery utilization and the value of the products a refinery can make.
A refinery may pay a premium for a grade that fits its equipment, while a producer may accept a discount when pipelines or storage are constrained. Consequently, saying that Brent is always above WTI because it is “better” is inaccurate. Quality is one input among several, and the logistical value of a barrel can change faster than its laboratory characteristics.

How benchmark-linked prices are applied
Most physical crude contracts are not simple purchases at the headline Brent or WTI quote. The buyer and seller specify a grade, loading or delivery point, timing and a differential. For example, a cargo can be priced against a Brent-linked reference while adding a freight adjustment and a quality adjustment. A U.S. producer can sell against WTI and subtract a basin differential when its field is farther from Cushing or an export terminal.
That structure explains why a benchmark can rise while a particular producer’s realized price rises less, or even falls, if local transportation constraints worsen. It also explains why a refiner’s economics cannot be inferred from the benchmark alone: refinery utilization and the value of the products produced are part of the differential framework.
How the futures contracts work
Brent futures and the North Sea basket
The EIA says Brent futures trade on ICE in London and are underpinned by North Sea BFOE cargoes. ICE’s current Brent basket includes Brent, Forties, Oseberg, Ekofisk and Troll, and it began including WTI Midland in June 2023.
ICE describes the Brent future as physically deliverable, with an option to cash settle against the ICE Brent Index. The index is calculated from qualifying North Sea cash or forward-market trades and assessments for the relevant delivery month. ICE publishes it after front-month expiry and uses it as the final cash-settlement price when applicable.
WTI futures and Cushing delivery
The WTI futures contract trades on NYMEX in New York. Its delivery mechanism uses Cushing, Oklahoma, so the contract’s price reflects the physical availability and transfer of crude at that hub. Exchange-published educational material from CME emphasizes the contract’s liquidity and the transparency of its pipeline and Cushing-inventory structure.
That description is CME’s educational framing, not an independent ranking of Brent and WTI. Liquidity, bid-ask spreads and access can vary by contract month and market conditions.
Physical delivery, cash settlement and timing
Physical deliverability does not mean every investor takes possession of oil. Futures traders usually close or roll positions before delivery, while the contract’s delivery terms help anchor the financial price to the physical market. Brent’s cash-settlement option references the ICE Brent Index, whose calculation uses qualifying cash or forward trades and assessments for the relevant month. Because ICE publishes that index after front-month expiry, the timing of a final settlement differs from an intraday screen quote.
WTI’s Cushing delivery point gives the contract a direct connection to pipeline nominations, storage availability and the ability to receive or move barrels. These different settlement frameworks are why two otherwise similar price charts can react differently around expiry or during a regional logistics disruption.
Why matching contract months is essential
Expiration calendars for Brent and WTI are not identical. Comparing Brent’s nearest expiring future with WTI’s nearest expiring future can mix different delivery periods and create a misleading “spread.” Compare the same calendar month whenever possible, and label each number as spot, a particular futures month, an index or a fund proxy.

Which benchmark should an investor watch?
Choose Brent for global and seaborne exposure
Brent is usually the more relevant first quote when your thesis depends on:
Recommended Free Tools
- international crude cargoes and Atlantic Basin trade;
- shipping rates, port access or maritime disruption;
- sanctions, wars or other geopolitical risks affecting seaborne supply;
- oil companies whose production is priced against waterborne or Brent-linked markers;
- global supply-and-demand conditions rather than one inland U.S. hub.
A Brent move can still affect U.S. companies, but it may not match the realized price of a producer whose barrels are constrained at an inland location.
Choose WTI for U.S. physical exposure
WTI is usually the more relevant first quote when your thesis depends on:
- U.S. shale or other domestic crude production;
- pipeline flows into or out of Cushing;
- Cushing inventories and available storage;
- U.S. export takeaway capacity;
- domestic refiners whose crude slate is linked to U.S. inland pricing.
A U.S. producer may sell at a local price that differs from WTI by a basin differential. WTI is the reference point, not necessarily the producer’s realized price.
Use both for multinational companies
A large oil company can have upstream assets priced against several regional markers while its refineries, transportation contracts and hedges reference other futures. For that type of exposure, monitor the benchmark that matches each business segment instead of treating one quote as a complete company-wide oil price.
Matching the benchmark to an investment vehicle
The same Brent or WTI label can describe very different exposures. A futures contract is a leveraged, margined position with an expiry and a roll decision. An exchange-traded fund or note may hold a sequence of futures rather than physical crude, so fees, tracking error and the fund’s roll schedule affect returns. A stock adds operating costs, debt, hedging policy, dividends and company-specific risks. A CFD or similar derivative can add financing charges and counterparty terms.
Before comparing performance, identify whether the vehicle references ICE Brent, NYMEX WTI, a spot assessment or an index. Two funds with similar names can hold different contract months and roll on different dates. Their returns can therefore diverge even when the headline benchmark appears unchanged.
What the Brent-WTI spread tells you
The Brent-WTI spread is the price of a matched Brent contract minus the price of a matched WTI contract. It is best read as a relative-location indicator, not as a permanent quality ranking.
Reasons the spread may widen
- International or seaborne crude becomes relatively tighter than U.S. crude.
- U.S. pipeline takeaway is constrained, leaving more barrels near Cushing or another inland hub.
- Cushing storage fills or the cost of moving barrels to export terminals rises.
- Shipping disruption or geopolitical risk raises the value of waterborne supply.
- Regional refinery demand changes in a way that favors Brent-linked or WTI-linked barrels.
Reasons the spread may narrow
- U.S. export access improves and inland barrels can reach seaborne buyers more easily.
- U.S. demand strengthens relative to international demand.
- Global supply grows relative to waterborne demand.
- Inventory, refinery or pipeline conditions change in favor of Cushing barrels.
These are hypotheses to test, not automatic trading signals. Check inventories, pipeline and vessel flows, refinery utilization, export capacity and the exact contract months before assigning a cause. A spread move can reflect several factors at once, and the sign alone does not identify which market changed.

Volatility: useful context, not a permanent rule
ICE reported average volatility from January 2015 through July 2024 of 36.5% — Intercontinental Exchange, 2024 for ICE Brent and 39.6% — Intercontinental Exchange, 2024 for NYMEX WTI. Those figures describe that specific sample and measurement; they do not establish that WTI is always more volatile or that Brent is always steadier.
Volatility can change with contract month, market structure, liquidity, storage availability and the event being measured. Use the figures as historical context, not as a forecast. A calm average can also conceal short periods in which a local storage shock produces extreme WTI moves or a shipping crisis produces extreme Brent moves.
A practical benchmark-selection process
- Define the economic exposure. Write down whether your risk is global seaborne crude, U.S. inland production, refining margins, shipping or a particular company’s asset base.
- Identify the actual instrument. Record whether you are looking at a Brent or WTI future, an index, a stock, a fund, a CFD or another derivative. The instrument may include fees, financing, tracking error or a different roll schedule.
- Match the delivery month. Compare equivalent Brent and WTI contract months. Do not infer a spread from two unrelated front-month quotes.
- Check the physical basis. Note the delivery point, cargo basket, pipeline access and storage exposure behind the quote.
- Separate price from return. For a futures-based position, examine margin, contract size, currency conversion, expiry and roll yield. Contango can create a negative roll effect when later contracts cost more; backwardation can create a positive one, all else equal.
- Test the explanation. If the spread moves, compare the move with inventory data, refinery utilization, pipeline constraints, export flows and shipping conditions before forming a conclusion.
- Document the observation. Save the source, timestamp, quote type and contract month so that a later comparison uses the same basis.
Costs, currency and market structure
Both benchmarks are commonly quoted in U.S. dollars. An investor whose reporting currency is different has foreign-exchange exposure unless it is hedged. Futures also require margin, and the cash committed to margin is not the same as the notional value of the oil exposure. Financing terms, commissions and bid-ask spreads can materially affect a short-term position.
The futures curve matters as much as the headline price for a position held across expiries. In contango, later contracts cost more than earlier ones, so repeatedly buying the next contract can create a negative roll effect, all else equal. In backwardation, later contracts are cheaper and rolling can add a positive effect, all else equal. A fund’s stated roll methodology determines how much of that effect reaches the investor.

Calling Brent’s premium a quality verdict
A higher Brent price can result from shipping, storage, export access or regional demand. Quality is one input among several.
Mixing spot, futures and proxies
A spot assessment, a particular futures month and a fund designed to track futures can all show different values. State which one you mean and examine the proxy’s roll and fee mechanics.
Ignoring currency
Both crude benchmarks are commonly quoted in U.S. dollars. An investor whose reporting currency is different has an additional foreign-exchange exposure unless it is hedged.

Treating the spread as a standalone trade signal
A wide or narrow spread describes a relative price, not its cause. Confirm the physical and contract evidence before acting.
Comparing unmatched dates
Different expiry calendars, settlement windows and quote timestamps can manufacture an apparent spread. Record the delivery month and time of each observation before drawing a conclusion.
Questions to ask before using a Brent or WTI quote
- Which region produces the barrels behind the exposure?
- Is the crude waterborne, pipeline-bound or tied to a storage hub?
- Which delivery month is quoted?
- Is the value a spot assessment, futures settlement, index level or proxy?
- What quality and freight differential applies to the actual crude?
- How do currency, margin, financing, fees and roll schedules affect the position?
- Are inventory, refinery, pipeline and shipping data consistent with the price move?
- Does the company or fund hedge with Brent, WTI or another regional marker?
- Could a local basis differential make the realized price diverge from the benchmark?
Bottom line for investors
Use Brent as the primary reference for global seaborne crude, shipping and geopolitical supply risk. Use WTI for U.S. production, Cushing inventories, pipelines and domestic refining. When the question concerns relative pricing, calculate the Brent-WTI spread with equivalent contract months and investigate logistics, storage, flows and demand before treating it as evidence of a trade or a quality difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between Brent and WTI?
Brent is a waterborne North Sea benchmark used widely for internationally traded crude, while WTI is the North American benchmark tied to physical delivery at Cushing, Oklahoma.
Which benchmark should investors watch?
Watch Brent for global seaborne, shipping and geopolitical exposure; watch WTI for U.S. production, pipelines, Cushing inventories and domestic refining. Multinational companies may require both.
Is Brent better than WTI?
Neither is universally better. The appropriate benchmark is the one that matches the geography, delivery system and investment instrument being analyzed.
Why is Brent often priced above WTI?
A premium can reflect stronger international demand, shipping or geopolitical risk, constrained U.S. takeaway, Cushing storage conditions or regional supply differences. It is not a permanent quality ranking.

It is the price of a matched Brent contract minus a matched WTI contract. The spread is a location and logistics signal, so compare equivalent delivery months and test explanations against inventory, pipeline, refinery and shipping data.
Do Brent and WTI futures settle the same way?
No. Brent futures on ICE are physically deliverable with an option to cash settle against the ICE Brent Index, while NYMEX WTI uses physical delivery at Cushing.
Why can an oil fund’s return differ from the benchmark?
A fund may hold futures rather than physical crude, so roll yield, contango or backwardation, fees, financing, tracking error and currency movements can change the investor’s return.
Does crude quality determine the Brent-WTI spread?
Quality matters through API gravity, sulfur and refinery suitability, but transportation costs, storage, regional supply and demand, refinery utilization and export access can be equally important.
