Bitcoin is designed chiefly for peer-to-peer value transfer, while Ethereum is a programmable network for smart contracts and decentralized applications. Their native assets and security models differ too: Bitcoin uses proof-of-work mining and has a protocol-defined maximum supply of 21 million BTC; Ethereum uses proof-of-stake validators, and ETH has no fixed supply cap because issuance and burning both affect its net supply. Neither design eliminates price volatility or the risks of holding and using crypto.
What are Bitcoin and Ethereum designed to do?
Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer digital currency: its network records transfers of BTC without relying on a central payment operator. Ethereum is a programmable network. Developers can deploy smart contracts—software that runs on the network—to support decentralized applications. ETH is Ethereum’s native asset, used to pay network fees and to support the network through staking.
That distinction is useful, but not absolute: both networks transfer value, and each has an ecosystem of services and applications. The key difference is that programmability is central to Ethereum’s design, while Bitcoin’s primary purpose is digital currency.
How do Bitcoin and Ethereum secure their networks?
| Feature | Bitcoin | Ethereum |
|---|---|---|
| Consensus | Proof of work: miners use computational work to propose blocks. | Proof of stake: validators stake ETH to participate in securing the network. |
| Resource and security model | Mining requires computation and energy; the system’s security depends on the proof-of-work mechanism. | Validators stake ETH and can be penalized for misconduct; the system relies on proof of stake. |
| Native asset’s role | BTC is the currency transferred on the network. | ETH pays fees, supports smart-contract execution, and is staked to secure the network. |
Ethereum.org describes its mechanism directly: “Ethereum uses a proof-of-stake mechanism to secure the blockchain.” The same documentation notes that proof of stake is newer in live use than Bitcoin’s proof-of-work design. Different mechanisms create different resource requirements and security assumptions; neither should be treated as invulnerable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How do their supply models differ?
| Supply question | Bitcoin | Ethereum |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term design | A predetermined issuance schedule leads to an eventual maximum of 21 million BTC. | No fixed supply cap in Ethereum.org’s comparison; issuance and burning both affect net supply. |
| What changes supply? | New BTC enter circulation through block rewards, which decrease over time according to the protocol’s schedule. | ETH is issued in relation to staking and burned in relation to network activity, so net supply can rise or fall. |
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s April 17, 2025 digital-economy memo says the April 2024 Bitcoin halving reduced the block reward to 3.125 BTC per new block. That is the reward for a block, not a promise about BTC’s price or the amount an individual receives.
A supply rule does not determine market value by itself. Bitcoin’s cap does not guarantee appreciation, and Ethereum’s variable net issuance does not on its own determine ETH’s value.

What does the energy difference mean?
Proof-of-work mining requires computational work and energy. Ethereum.org reports that Ethereum’s move from proof of work to proof of stake reduced its energy expenditure by approximately 99.98% relative to Ethereum’s earlier proof-of-work system. This is Ethereum.org’s estimate about Ethereum’s transition, not a current live measurement or a controlled comparison of Ethereum with Bitcoin.
What risks should users consider?
Price volatility
Bitcoin and ether prices can be highly volatile, as the SEC’s September 2024 investor bulletin warns. Supply design and consensus mechanisms do not remove the possibility of substantial price changes. The cited material does not establish a current investment outlook.

Keys, custody, and operational mistakes
Holding crypto directly means managing access credentials, including private keys. Losing or exposing keys, sending a transaction incorrectly, or making other operational mistakes can put assets at risk. A third-party custodian or exchange-traded product changes the type of dependency and risk; it does not make the underlying crypto risk-free. The SEC’s Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors explains custody considerations.
Ethereum-specific complexity
Ethereum’s smart contracts and staking add ways to use ETH, but they also mean users may encounter more complex application and staking decisions than a straightforward currency transfer. Understanding a contract or staking arrangement matters; network design alone does not make every application or service safe.

Self-custody tools
A hardware wallet is an optional tool for people who choose to manage crypto keys themselves. It does not protect against market losses, every form of key loss, or user error. Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin FAQ covers Bitcoin use and custody basics.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which network is the better fit?
There is no universally superior choice in these design differences. Bitcoin’s core proposition is peer-to-peer digital currency with a predetermined supply schedule. Ethereum’s core proposition is a programmable network whose native asset pays fees and can be staked, with net issuance affected by both issuance and burning. Which matters more depends on whether a user’s priority is currency transfer or interacting with smart-contract applications, and on their comfort with each network’s mechanics and custody requirements.
