The most reliable VS Code setup for AI-assisted coding is not a single settings file. Keep personal preferences in user settings, put team and project conventions in workspace settings, choose Auto Save and formatting deliberately, isolate incompatible toolchains with profiles, and leave unfamiliar repositories in Restricted Mode until you have reviewed them. Treat AI controls as feature- and extension-specific rather than assuming one global switch. This arrangement reduces unexpected rewrites and execution risks, but it cannot make generated code correct or guarantee a particular productivity improvement.
What VS Code settings should I use first for AI-assisted coding?
Start with a small, explicit baseline: user settings for preferences that follow you, workspace settings for repository conventions, a formatter the project actually accepts, and a save policy that matches your review workflow. Add AI extensions only in the profiles and workspaces where you need them. Keep new or untrusted repositories in Restricted Mode while you inspect their files and configuration.
A practical baseline
- User scope: editor appearance, keybindings, accessibility choices and other personal preferences that should travel between projects.
- Workspace scope: the project’s formatter, language-specific formatting rules and conventions that teammates must share.
- Save policy: either explicit saves or a documented Auto Save mode; do not enable format-on-save until a suitable formatter is selected.
- Isolation: a dedicated profile for AI-enabled extensions or a language stack that should not affect unrelated repositories.
- Trust: Restricted Mode for unfamiliar code until you understand its tasks, scripts, extensions and agent instructions.
- AI controls: the built-in VS Code controls where applicable, plus the settings and documentation of each installed extension.
Microsoft describes the scope and precedence model in User and workspace settings. Workspace values can override user values, and extensions can contribute additional settings and scopes, so a value that appears correct globally may not be the effective value in a particular project.

User settings apply broadly to your VS Code installation; workspace settings are saved with a project and are intended for shared conventions. When both define a value, the workspace value generally takes precedence, while language-specific and extension-provided scopes can add another layer.

Use user settings for personal defaults
Put choices here when changing them should affect nearly every project: color theme, font, minimap preference, editor accessibility options, keybindings and similar personal habits. These settings are private to your environment and should not be used to impose a repository’s formatter or lint policy on every codebase you open.
Use workspace settings for project contracts
Put repository conventions in the workspace configuration so collaborators and automated tools see the same intent. Typical examples are the formatter for a language, language-specific formatting behavior and settings needed by the project’s development extensions. Review the resulting file before committing it; a workspace setting is a project artifact, not merely a local preference.
Check precedence before changing a value
Open Settings and search for the setting name. VS Code shows the scopes in which a value is configured, and the gear menu can reveal where an override comes from. If a global value appears ignored, inspect workspace and language-specific entries before replacing your user setting.

How do I configure a formatter for one project without changing every project?
Configure the formatter in the project workspace and, when necessary, under a language-specific scope. This keeps AI-generated edits aligned with the repository’s accepted style instead of applying your personal formatter everywhere.
Set the default formatter through the UI
- Open the repository in VS Code.
- Open the Command Palette and run Format Document With…, then choose Configure Default Formatter….
- Select the formatter that the project uses. If the language is not supported by a built-in formatter, install the project-approved formatter extension first.
- Open Settings, switch to the Workspace tab, and verify the language-specific formatter entry.
- Format a representative file and compare the diff with the project’s existing style before enabling automatic formatting.
VS Code documents built-in formatting support for JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, HTML and CSS; other languages may require an extension. The relevant behavior and formatter choices are covered in Basic editing.
Use language-specific overrides when a repository mixes languages
A JavaScript formatter need not be the formatter for Python, Go or Markdown. In Settings, choose the language scope (for example, [JavaScript]) and set the formatter there. If a broad workspace value still wins unexpectedly, inspect the language-specific block and extension settings for a more specific override.
Do not hide formatter changes in AI diffs
When an agent or chat tool edits several files, formatting can produce a second set of changes that obscures the substantive edit. Review the formatter’s diff separately, and avoid changing formatter configuration in the same commit as an AI-generated feature unless the project requires it.

Should I turn on Auto Save when using AI tools?
Auto Save is a workflow choice, not a reliability feature. Use explicit saves when you want a deliberate review point; use a delay or focus trigger when your tools and team expect files to be written continuously.

Microsoft lists these Auto Save modes in its editing documentation. For afterDelay, the documented product default delay is 1000 milliseconds; that is a configuration default, not a measured improvement in coding reliability. Set the delay in milliseconds only if the project’s workflow benefits from a different pause.
Set Auto Save explicitly
- Open Settings and search for Auto Save.
- Set Files: Auto Save to
off,afterDelay,onFocusChangeoronWindowChange. - If you chose
afterDelay, review Files: Auto Save Delay. - Test the behavior with an unsaved change before relying on it during an agent run.
Keep Auto Save separate from formatting. Saving a file does not by itself mean it should be reformatted, and formatting on save can be enabled or disabled independently.
Should I enable format-on-save for AI-generated code?
Enable editor.formatOnSave only when the active language has a configured formatter and the project accepts its output. Otherwise, leave it off and run formatting deliberately after reviewing the generated change.
When format-on-save helps
- The repository has a stable formatter and contributors expect its output.
- The formatter is deterministic and available for every developer and continuous-integration environment.
- Small AI edits should be normalized immediately so review focuses on logic rather than whitespace.
When to leave it off
- No formatter is configured for the file’s language.
- Several formatter extensions compete for the same language.
- The project intentionally preserves generated, vendored or machine-aligned files.
- A broad formatter would rewrite unrelated lines whenever an agent touches a file.
Configure it at the narrowest useful scope
In Settings, search for Format On Save and enable it in the workspace or language scope rather than globally when only one project needs it. A representative workspace configuration can look like this:

}Replace the example extension identifier with the formatter approved by the project; do not copy an arbitrary identifier into a real repository. After saving, inspect the diff to confirm that only expected formatting changed.
How do VS Code profiles improve AI-assisted coding?
A profile packages a distinct set of settings, extensions and related configuration. Associate one with a folder or workspace to keep an AI-enabled toolchain separate from projects that need a minimal or different environment.

Create a project profile
- Open the Accounts or Manage menu and choose Profiles.
- Select Create Profile…, name it for the project or stack, and choose whether to start from an existing profile or an empty one.
- Install only the extensions and configure only the settings needed for that work.
- Use Apply to Folder or Workspace (the exact command is available from the Profiles interface) to associate the profile with the repository.
- Reopen the project and verify that the status bar and installed extensions match the intended profile.

Useful profile boundaries
- AI development: the assistant and language extensions required for active coding.
- Review or audit: minimal extensions while examining unfamiliar code.
- Documentation: writing and preview tools without project-specific build integrations.
A profile changes your local environment; it does not replace workspace settings that the repository shares. Keep project conventions in the workspace and use profiles to control which tools are available around those conventions.
Is it safe to use AI agents in an unfamiliar repository?
Do not grant execution-capable AI features unrestricted access before reviewing an unfamiliar repository. Open it in Restricted Mode, inspect its files and tasks, and enable trust only when you understand what will run. Workspace Trust is a protection layer, not a guarantee that a malicious extension or other code cannot bypass every safeguard.
What Restricted Mode changes
Restricted Mode limits or disables features that could execute code or make consequential changes while you assess the workspace. Microsoft specifically notes that AI agents may change files, run terminal commands and make web requests, and that prompt injection is a concern when project content is placed in an agent’s context. Those capabilities make the trust decision part of your coding workflow, not an afterthought.
Review before enabling trust
- Read the repository’s README, contribution guidance and setup scripts.
- Inspect task definitions, launch configurations and package or build scripts for commands you did not expect.
- Check which extensions the workspace recommends and whether you recognize their publishers.
- Look for instructions embedded in source files that an agent might treat as prompts.
- Decide whether the repository needs network access, terminal execution or automatic file modification.
Microsoft’s guidance is concise: “When in doubt, leave a folder in Restricted Mode. You can always enable trust later.” See Workspace Trust for the current trust controls and limitations.
Use a deliberate trust transition
- Open the repository and keep the trust prompt at Restricted Mode.
- Perform the initial review without running tasks or accepting agent-proposed commands.
- If the code is acceptable, run Workspaces: Manage Workspace Trust from the Command Palette.
- Trust only the specific folder or workspace you reviewed.
- After trust is enabled, review every terminal command and file change an AI tool proposes.
How do I control AI features in VS Code?
VS Code’s built-in AI controls are separate from settings supplied by installed extensions. The documented setting chat.disableAIFeatures controls built-in AI features; it does not automatically disable every third-party assistant.
Disable built-in AI features when needed
Open Settings, search for Chat: Disable AI Features, and set it at the user or workspace scope that matches your requirement. You can also edit the setting directly:

"chat.disableAIFeatures": trueUse a workspace value when a particular repository must not use built-in AI, and a user value when you want the restriction everywhere. Confirm the effective scope after changing it, especially if a profile or workspace has its own override.
Check each extension’s own controls
An installed extension may add settings for suggestions, chat, agent behavior, telemetry, file access or command execution. Read that extension’s current settings and publisher documentation instead of assuming the built-in VS Code switch covers it. Scope Copilot preferences deliberately
Copilot account preferences can be scoped to a workspace and profile. That makes it possible to use one policy in a sensitive repository and another in a personal project, but only if you verify which profile and workspace are active before coding.
How do I stop an AI assistant from changing files automatically?
There is no single VS Code setting that governs every assistant’s file-edit behavior. First identify whether the change came from a built-in feature or an extension, then inspect that tool’s current settings and mode controls.
Use reviewable interaction modes
- Prefer a suggestion or chat mode that presents a diff before applying edits when the extension offers one.
- Keep agent or autonomous modes disabled in repositories you have not reviewed.
- Approve terminal commands individually rather than treating a generated command as trusted.
- Use source control to inspect and revert each batch of edits.
Workspace Trust still matters even when you intend to review diffs: an agent can combine file edits with command execution or web requests, and project text can contain prompt-injection attempts. Consult the extension publisher’s documentation for the exact names of its approval and edit controls.

- Confirm the active window: make sure the expected folder or multi-root workspace is open.
- Confirm the profile: check that the intended profile is active and associated with this folder.
- Inspect scope: compare User, Workspace and language-specific values in Settings.
- Check extension ownership: identify which extension contributes the formatter or AI setting.
- Test a single file: use Format Document With… and note the selected formatter.
- Review the diff: determine whether Auto Save, format-on-save or an agent made the change.
- Reload only after documenting the state: restart or reload the window if an extension’s setting changed but its behavior did not.

What should I put in a team-ready workspace configuration?
Commit only settings that express a genuine project convention and that teammates can use with the project’s documented tools. Keep personal UI preferences, experimental extensions and machine-specific paths out of the shared workspace.

Review this checklist before committing
- The formatter is named explicitly for each language that needs one.
- Format-on-save is enabled only where the project accepts automatic formatting.
- Auto Save reflects the team’s review and tooling expectations.
- No setting embeds credentials, private paths or personal feature preferences.
- The profile and extensions needed for the project are documented separately from the workspace’s shared values.
- AI use is consistent with the repository’s security and contribution policy.
Keep the configuration small enough that a new contributor can understand why each entry exists. A long settings file is not inherently more reliable; clarity about scope and ownership is what prevents surprises.
What is the most reliable day-to-day workflow?
Use a repeatable sequence: establish trust, confirm the effective configuration, make a bounded AI request, inspect the diff, and run the project’s own checks. Settings support this workflow, but they do not replace code review or tests.
- Open the repository in the profile intended for its language and tools.
- Verify Restricted Mode or the reviewed trust state before enabling agent capabilities.
- Check the active formatter and Auto Save mode in the workspace.
- Ask the assistant for a narrowly defined change with explicit files and acceptance criteria.
- Review proposed edits and commands before applying or running them.
- Save or let the chosen Auto Save policy persist the files, then inspect the complete diff.
- Run the repository’s formatter, tests and static checks according to its documented workflow.
- Revert unrelated formatting or generated changes before committing.
This process gives every edit a visible boundary: the workspace determines conventions, the profile determines available tools, trust determines execution exposure, and the diff determines what actually changed.

Can I share VS Code settings with teammates without sharing my whole profile?
Yes. Workspace settings can carry project conventions while profiles remain local arrangements of extensions and personal preferences. Share only the workspace values the project requires, and document any profile-specific extensions separately so contributors can choose their own setup.
How can I see which formatter will run before I save?
Open a file in the target language, run Format Document With…, and inspect the selected provider. If the choice is wrong, use Configure Default Formatter… in that menu and then verify the language-specific workspace setting.
Does Restricted Mode block every AI assistant?
No. Restricted Mode limits features that could execute code or make consequential changes, but extensions can define their own behavior and restrictions. Check the extension’s documentation and do not infer its permissions from the built-in chat setting.
Where should I change a Copilot preference that applies only to one project?
