For a small or moderate HAProxy deployment, start with 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB of RAM. That is a sizing hypothesis, not a guaranteed throughput limit. Choose dedicated CPU when HAProxy will terminate TLS, perform encryption or compression, evaluate complex ACLs, handle heavy connection churn, or provide latency-sensitive service. For high availability, run at least two HAProxy VPS instances in separate failure domains and monitor them from outside the pair.
There is no universal “HAProxy supports X connections” VPS size. Results depend on the processor, network interface, operating-system tuning, traffic pattern, TLS rate, connection count and configuration. Measure your workload before treating any plan as production-ready.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The short answer: begin at 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB
A 2-vCPU, 4-GiB VPS is a defensible baseline for one modest HAProxy instance with the operating system, HAProxy, logs, metrics and normal headroom. It suits a development environment, a low-to-moderate traffic service, or a bursty workload that does not keep CPU busy for long periods.
Move to four or more vCPUs when monitoring shows sustained CPU pressure, rising request latency, or insufficient capacity during connection spikes. Increase memory when connection counts, buffers, logging, sidecars or observability agents consume the available headroom. Do not add RAM merely because a larger plan is available: CPU, connection rate and network capacity commonly become the limiting factors first.

| Use case | Initial VPS shape | CPU policy | How to validate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light, bursty traffic or non-production testing | 2 vCPU, 4 GiB RAM | Shared CPU can be appropriate | Exercise normal and peak connection patterns; watch CPU and latency |
| Modest production traffic with TLS termination | 2 vCPU, 4 GiB RAM | Dedicated CPU is the safer default when budget permits | Load-test TLS handshakes, encrypted traffic and keep-alive behavior |
| Sustained high request rate or heavy connection churn | Start at 2 vCPU/4 GiB, then move to 4+ vCPU as measurements require | Prefer dedicated CPU for predictable scheduling | Scale after observing sustained CPU pressure or latency growth |
| High availability | Two or more instances using the selected per-node size | Place nodes in separate failure domains | Test health checks, failover and recovery while monitoring externally |
HAProxy Technologies describes HAProxy as “a multi-threaded application.” Its performance guidance also says HAProxy is designed to run in clusters and “scales well horizontally,” and that several small machines can be more cost-effective than a small number of large machines. Those statements support scaling out with additional nodes rather than assuming one oversized VPS is the only solution.
What actually determines HAProxy VPS size
CPU is usually the first constraint for expensive work
TLS handshakes, encryption, compression, complex access-control rules, detailed logging and frequent connection establishment all consume CPU. A reverse proxy that simply forwards long-lived, already-encrypted connections may use far less CPU than one terminating a large number of short-lived HTTPS sessions.
Recommended Free Tools
Two virtual CPUs give HAProxy room to use its multithreaded design while leaving some scheduling capacity for the operating system and monitoring. If CPU remains close to saturation for sustained periods, or if response latency increases while backends are healthy, add vCPUs before adding memory. Four or more vCPUs is a measurement-driven next step, not a claim that every four-vCPU VPS has the same capacity.
Memory provides headroom for connections and supporting services
HAProxy needs memory for connection state, buffers and processes, while the host also needs memory for the operating system, metrics, logs and any sidecars. Higher concurrency generally increases the amount of state and buffer memory in use. The exact requirement varies with configuration, protocol mix and traffic.
HAProxy Enterprise tuning documentation warns that file descriptors affect memory use and that maxconn directly controls concurrent TCP connections. Treat both as capacity settings: raising maxconn without enough memory and descriptors can turn a connection spike into an outage. Set limits deliberately, observe actual usage and leave operating-system headroom instead of allocating every byte to HAProxy.

Network capacity and placement can outweigh CPU and RAM
Confirm the provider’s transfer allowance, network interface performance, port speed, region and latency to both users and backend servers. A 2-vCPU/4-GiB machine in the right region can outperform a larger instance separated from its backends by unnecessary latency. Conversely, a CPU and RAM match cannot compensate for insufficient egress or a congested network path.

Shared CPU or dedicated CPU?
When shared CPU is reasonable
Shared CPU VPS plans are designed as lower-cost options and can work for development, staging, low traffic or bursty services. If HAProxy spends most of its time idle and short bursts are acceptable, a shared plan may provide good value. The trade-off is that neighboring workloads and host scheduling can make CPU availability less predictable.
When dedicated CPU is safer
Use dedicated CPU when TLS termination, encryption, compression or sustained request rates make consistent CPU scheduling important. Dedicated capacity reduces the risk that host contention will turn a temporary CPU delay into user-visible latency. It does not remove the need for load testing or guarantee a particular throughput figure; processor generation, network and configuration still matter.
DigitalOcean’s published 2026 examples illustrate the price difference. Its Basic shared plan with 2 vCPUs, 4 GiB RAM, an 80 GiB SSD and 4,000 GiB of transfer is listed at $24 per month. Its CPU-Optimized dedicated plan with 2 vCPUs, 4 GiB RAM, a 25 GiB SSD and 4,000 GiB of transfer is listed at $42 per month. These are dated 2026 list-price examples, not universal market prices; recheck the live regional catalog before purchasing.

How to size HAProxy before production
- Describe the workload. Record whether HAProxy terminates TLS or passes it through, the expected request rate, concurrent connections, connection reuse, backend count, payload sizes, compression, ACL complexity and logging volume. Separate ordinary traffic from launch bursts and failure scenarios.
- Choose the 2-vCPU/4-GiB starting point. Use shared CPU for a light or bursty workload if occasional scheduling variation is acceptable. Select dedicated CPU when consistent latency or sustained cryptographic work matters.
- Reserve headroom. Account for the operating system, metrics, logs and any security or observability agents. Keep swap disabled; HAProxy documentation states that the machine must never swap.
- Set connection and descriptor limits intentionally. Review
maxconn, file-descriptor limits and buffer settings together. A higher concurrent-connection limit requires enough memory and descriptors to support it safely. - Generate representative load. Test the same TLS versions, certificate chain, keep-alive behavior, request sizes, ACLs, compression and logging used in production. Include short-lived connection storms, not only a smooth request stream.
- Observe the bottleneck. Track CPU utilization per thread and overall, request and queue latency, concurrent sessions, connection failures, file-descriptor usage, memory consumption, swap activity, network throughput and packet errors. Observe backends separately so a slow application is not mistaken for an undersized load balancer.
- Change one dimension at a time. If CPU is the constraint, test dedicated CPU or additional vCPUs. If memory or descriptor headroom is the constraint, increase RAM and adjust limits together. If bandwidth or latency is the constraint, change the network plan or region rather than simply buying more memory.
- Repeat during failure tests. Drain a node, stop health checks, and verify that traffic moves to the remaining instance. Measure recovery time and capacity while one node is absent; the surviving node must handle the required load without swapping.
Memory, file descriptors and the no-swap requirement
Memory planning is not just the RAM shown in a provider’s plan. HAProxy’s concurrent connection state and buffers grow with workload, and each connection consumes operating-system resources. File descriptors therefore belong in the sizing review, especially when you raise maxconn.
- Keep free memory for the operating system, metrics, logs and security agents.
- Check descriptor limits before increasing concurrent connections.
- Size log retention so a busy proxy does not fill its disk.
- Do not use swap as a safety margin; HAProxy guidance says the machine must never swap.
- Increase RAM when measured connection state, buffers or supporting processes remove the required headroom.
A small SSD can be adequate for the operating system and short-lived logs, but disk capacity still matters for retained access logs, crash data and local monitoring. DigitalOcean’s two example plans demonstrate that storage can differ even when vCPU, RAM and transfer are identical: 80 GiB on the Basic example versus 25 GiB on the CPU-Optimized example.
High availability: one VPS is not enough
A single VPS remains a single failure domain. A host outage, network problem, maintenance event or accidental shutdown can remove the load balancer even when every backend is healthy. Run at least two HAProxy instances, preferably in separate availability zones, hosts or other provider-defined failure domains.

Capacity during a node loss
Size each node for the traffic it must carry when its partner is offline, or document an explicit degraded-service policy. A pair of undersized 2-vCPU nodes does not provide useful availability if either survivor immediately saturates CPU or memory during failover.
Configuration and reload behavior
Keep configuration deployment consistent between nodes and verify reload behavior under active connections. Include certificate rotation, health-check changes, ACL updates and rollback in the failure exercise. Ease of creating a second instance and moving addresses or routes belongs in the provider comparison, not just the advertised CPU and RAM.

Compare the complete operating environment rather than selecting the cheapest plan with 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB. Use these criteria:
| Comparison area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| CPU | Is it shared or dedicated? What processor generation and scheduling guarantees apply? |
| Memory | Is the advertised RAM dedicated, and can the plan be resized without rebuilding? |
| Network | What transfer, port speed, packet limits and overage terms apply? |
| Location | Can nodes be placed near users and backends, and in separate failure domains? |
| Addressing | Are IPv4, IPv6, primary IPs and failover or floating addresses supported? |
| Storage and logs | Is there enough disk for the operating system, certificates, retained logs and metrics? |
| Operations | Are backups, snapshots, monitoring, health checks and automated rebuilds available? |
| HAProxy behavior | How easily can you deploy a second node, reload configuration and test failover? |
| Cost | What is the hourly and monthly compute price after adding addresses, backups and transfer? |

Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Choosing RAM while ignoring CPU
A large-memory VPS does not solve TLS or compression CPU saturation. Fix this by measuring cryptographic work, connection churn and latency, then selecting more or faster CPU capacity when those metrics lead.
Assuming a provider’s vCPU is a benchmark
Two vCPUs from different generations or scheduling models can behave differently. HAProxy documentation notes that processor, network interface, operating-system tuning, traffic and configuration change the result. Benchmark the exact plan and region you will deploy.
Raising maxconn without checking descriptors and memory
This can admit more connections than the machine can safely track. Review descriptor limits, connection state, buffers and free memory together, and test a realistic connection storm.
Leaving swap enabled
Swap can hide memory pressure until latency becomes severe. Follow HAProxy’s guidance that the machine must never swap; fix the underlying memory or connection-limit problem instead.
Deploying one “powerful” node
A large single VPS still fails as one unit. Use at least two nodes in separate failure domains, external monitoring and a tested traffic-steering mechanism.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Testing only steady traffic
Steady requests do not reveal the cost of TLS handshakes or short-lived connection bursts. Include churn, certificate operations, backend failures and one-node failover in the test plan.
A practical decision rule for 2026
Select 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB as the initial per-node tier for a modest deployment. Use shared CPU when the service is light or bursty and occasional scheduling variation is acceptable. Use dedicated CPU for production TLS termination or any workload where predictable latency is worth the premium. Move to four or more vCPUs when measured CPU pressure or latency growth persists, and add memory only when connection state, buffers or supporting services consume the available headroom.
For a production design, create two such nodes in separate failure domains, keep them out of swap, monitor file descriptors and maxconn, verify network and transfer limits, and load-test representative TLS and connection patterns before committing to the plan.
