The best VMware alternative depends on what you are trying to change. Four strategies cover most estates: keep VMware but move it to another infrastructure, replace the hypervisor with a different VM platform, rehost virtual machines on cloud infrastructure, or modernize selected applications into managed services and containers. Choose based on how much VMware dependency you can retain, your tolerance for application change, where workloads must run, and how quickly you need to move.
For continuity, Amazon Elastic VMware Service (Amazon EVS) and Azure VMware Solution (AVS) keep the VMware operating model. For a VM-centered replacement, Nutanix AHV and Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) provide a documented migration path. For a VMware exit with limited application change, rehosting to Amazon EC2 is the closest fit. For a longer-term transformation, managed cloud services, containers—including Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA)—and serverless architectures are more appropriate, but require redesign.
What counts as a VMware alternative?
“VMware alternative” is not one product category. It can mean moving the same VMware stack to a different location, replacing the virtualization layer, moving the existing virtual machines to cloud VMs, or changing the applications so they no longer need virtual machines. Those choices have very different migration effort, operational risk and long-term outcomes.

There is no evidence for a universal cheapest or fastest option. A platform that is inexpensive to license can cost more to migrate or operate, while a rapid rehost can preserve technical debt that modernization would remove. Compare the complete estate, not only the hypervisor line item.

Which strategy fits your VMware estate?
Keep VMware and relocate it
Amazon EVS runs VMware Cloud Foundation in an Amazon VPC and retains familiar VMware components such as vCenter, vSAN and NSX. Azure VMware Solution likewise provides a managed VMware environment in Azure. These services are useful when existing tooling, operational procedures, guest configurations and application assumptions must remain substantially unchanged.
This is a continuity strategy, not a VMware-free replacement. You still operate within VMware’s architecture and licensing model, even though the underlying infrastructure and some operational responsibilities move to the cloud provider. It can reduce immediate redesign risk, but it does not remove the reasons you may be seeking an alternative.
Replace the hypervisor and platform
Nutanix AHV and NC2 target organizations that want to continue running conventional virtual machines while changing the virtualization and management platform. An AWS-published 2026 implementation guide documents migration to NC2 on AWS with Nutanix Move and supplies correspondences between common VMware components and Nutanix products.

These are functional correspondences, not proof that every feature behaves identically. Validate guest operating systems, backup and disaster-recovery integrations, network-security rules, automation, monitoring, storage policies, hardware dependencies and support commitments. Size the target from measured workload utilization rather than from allocated vCPU and memory alone. The guide identifies Nutanix Collector and Sizer as planning inputs.
Rehost virtual machines on cloud infrastructure
Rehosting to Amazon EC2 changes the infrastructure while preserving more of the application than a modernization project. It is often appropriate when VMware licensing must be exited, the application cannot be changed safely in the near term, and the team is prepared to adopt cloud networking, identity, security, backup and cost controls.
Rehosting is not a file copy. Dependencies, IP and DNS behavior, firewall rules, latency, storage performance, licensing, monitoring and operational ownership can all change. A workload that performs well on a local VMware datastore may need a different EC2 instance, storage layout or network design. Include data-transfer charges, persistent storage, backup retention, managed services used alongside the VM and staff operating effort in the financial model.

Modernize selected workloads
Modernization replaces parts of the VM estate with managed databases, queues, object storage, application platforms, containers or serverless services. ROSA is a focused container route for teams that are ready to package and operate applications on OpenShift; it is not a drop-in hypervisor replacement. Azure-native services can serve the same role for workloads already aligned to Azure capabilities.
Modernization usually requires the most up-front work: application decomposition, image and deployment pipelines, observability, secrets management, data migration and new operating procedures. It can be the right answer when the business wants faster release cycles, elastic capacity or reduced infrastructure management. Do not modernize a workload that is close to retirement or replacement by SaaS unless the value case justifies the redesign.
How the major options differ
Amazon Elastic VMware Service
Amazon EVS is designed for VMware continuity on AWS. VMware administrators can continue using vCenter, vSAN and NSX while connecting the environment to AWS services and networks. Consider it when the application portfolio is tightly coupled to VMware features, the migration window is short, or organizational risk makes a platform conversion unacceptable.
- It preserves the VMware management model rather than replacing it.
- It can reduce application and operational change compared with a hypervisor conversion.
- It does not eliminate VMware licensing or VMware-specific skills.
- Validate AWS regional availability, host sizing, network design, support boundaries and the contract before committing.
Azure VMware Solution
AVS continues to provide a managed VMware service using portable VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) licenses. Microsoft states that AVS itself is not ending; the affected license-included SKUs are changing.
Microsoft’s current license guidance says license-included PayGo SKUs retire on 31 October 2026. License-included Reserved Instance services have a last day of 30 August 2027. Customers on affected Reserved Instance SKUs are instructed to transition to an AVS VCF bring-your-own-license (BYOL) SKU before that date to avoid service disruption on 31 August 2027. These dates apply to the specified license-included SKUs, not to AVS as a whole. Recheck the current Microsoft guidance and your contract immediately before procurement because dates, SKU availability and terms can change.
Microsoft describes purchasing portable VCF licenses as the least-disruptive continuation route and also identifies Nutanix Cloud Clusters and Azure-native services as alternatives. A decision to use AVS should therefore include a licensing transition plan, host and reservation requirements, and confirmation that portable licenses are available for the intended deployment.

Nutanix AHV and NC2
Nutanix is the clearest documented option when you want a VM platform rather than a VMware-compatible service. AHV supplies the hypervisor, while the broader Nutanix platform provides compute, storage, networking and centralized management. NC2 extends that operating model to supported cloud infrastructure, including AWS and Azure deployments described in the supplied product guidance.
Use the VMware-to-Nutanix mapping as a starting point for a proof of concept, not as a parity guarantee. Test the features your estate actually uses: snapshots and replication, backup APIs, distributed switching, microsegmentation, GPU or passthrough devices, storage performance, automation providers, identity integration and disaster-recovery runbooks. Confirm which capabilities are included in the selected edition and which require additional licensing or services.
Amazon EC2
EC2 is a rehosting destination, not a replacement hypervisor product. Each workload becomes an EC2 instance or an architecture built around multiple instances and managed services. This can be the least disruptive application path when the objective is to leave VMware quickly, but it introduces cloud-native responsibilities such as account structure, identity policies, security groups, routing, availability zones, patching and consumption governance.
Use EC2 when the application has a reasonable cloud operating model and the team can accept infrastructure changes without rewriting the application. For every candidate, record instance family, peak and sustained CPU, memory pressure, storage IOPS and throughput, network flows, licensing restrictions, backup requirements and recovery objectives.
Containers, managed services and Azure-native options
These options are best evaluated per application tier. A stateless web tier may move to containers, while a database tier may fit a managed database and a legacy batch job may remain on a VM. The correct target can be mixed: retaining one tier temporarily does not invalidate a modernization plan.
Define the desired operating outcome before selecting a service. “Modernize” should mean a measurable change such as reduced patching, independent scaling, faster deployment, improved resilience or retirement of an obsolete component. If those outcomes are not valuable for a particular workload, rehosting or retaining it may be more rational.

How to choose: a decision framework
- Set the non-negotiable constraints. Record data-residency rules, latency limits, supported regions, regulatory controls, outage tolerance, hardware dependencies and the date by which VMware licensing must change.
- Choose the desired operating model. If administrators must keep vCenter and existing runbooks, evaluate EVS or AVS. If the team wants a different VM platform, evaluate AHV and NC2. If cloud operations are acceptable with minimal application change, evaluate EC2. If application change is a strategic goal, identify modernization candidates.
- Classify every workload. Use retain, relocate, replace-platform, rehost, modernize or retire as explicit treatments. Avoid assigning the entire estate to one target by default.
- Estimate change and risk together. Count application testing, data movement, network redesign, identity work, backup changes, staff training, dual-running time and rollback complexity alongside platform costs.
- Prove the highest-risk assumptions. Run a pilot with representative workloads, real dependencies and production-like security controls. A successful boot is not sufficient; validate performance, backup recovery, monitoring, patching and failover.
- Compare total cost with actual measurements. Include licenses, hosts or instances, storage, networking, support, migration tooling, professional services, cloud consumption, observability and the cost of operating two environments during transition.
Use this rule of thumb: choose VMware continuity when application and operational continuity dominate; choose a replacement VM platform when you want to change the platform but keep the VM model; choose rehosting when leaving VMware matters more than redesign; and choose modernization when the business is prepared to fund application change for a longer-term operating improvement.

1. Build an inventory from actual utilization
Capture virtual machine owners, business criticality, guest operating system, CPU and memory use, storage capacity and performance, network flows, IP addresses, DNS records, firewall rules, identity dependencies, backup policies, replication, monitoring and licensing. Allocated resources can materially overstate what a workload consumes, so collect time-series utilization across normal and peak periods.
For AVS planning, Microsoft identifies Azure Migrate as a source of inventory, sizing and wave-planning evidence. Azure Migrate does not perform the move into AVS; it supports assessment and planning.
2. Map dependencies and migration groups
Group applications by dependency rather than by VM folder. A typical group may include web, application, database, identity, file and monitoring components. Document required communication ports, latency-sensitive calls, shared storage, scheduled jobs and external integrations. Decide which dependencies move together and which remain on premises during a transition period.
3. Assess platform suitability
- Confirm guest OS and third-party support on the target.
- Measure CPU, memory, storage latency, IOPS, throughput and network bandwidth.
- Check IP, DNS, firewall, load-balancer and routing assumptions.
- Identify hardware passthrough, GPU, USB, licensing dongle and appliance dependencies.
- Verify backup, disaster recovery, monitoring, vulnerability management and automation integrations.
- Check identity reachability and time synchronization requirements.
4. Select treatment for each workload
Retain a workload when its location or architecture is still appropriate. Rehost when application change has low near-term value. Move to a replacement VM platform when the VM operating model remains valid but VMware does not. Modernize when a managed service or container platform produces a clear business or operational benefit. Retire workloads that have no owner, no business use or a funded replacement.
5. Size and design the target
Use measured utilization and growth forecasts. For NC2, use Nutanix Collector and Sizer inputs rather than copying VMware cluster allocations. For EC2, select instance and storage types from measured performance requirements and model peak behavior. For AVS or EVS, validate host count, cluster growth, network connectivity, service limits and reservation or licensing requirements.

6. Define waves, validation and rollback
Start with a low-risk representative wave, then move applications with known dependencies before the most critical systems. Write entry and exit criteria for every wave:
- Replication is healthy and within the agreed recovery-point objective.
- Target networking is routable and firewall rules are tested.
- Identity, DNS, monitoring, backups and load balancers are reachable.
- Application owners have signed functional and performance tests.
- Rollback timing, data handling and decision authority are documented.
7. Execute cutover and operate the result
Freeze changes where necessary, complete final replication, perform the documented cutover, test user transactions and monitor the agreed health indicators. Keep the source environment intact until the rollback window and data-retention requirements are satisfied. After stabilization, remove unused capacity and update diagrams, runbooks, inventories, disaster-recovery plans and ownership records.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Calling a VMware-compatible service a VMware replacement
EVS and AVS preserve VMware. Presenting them as hypervisor replacements creates a false expectation about licensing, skills and platform independence. Label continuity services separately from replacement and modernization options.
Assuming a feature map proves parity
A mapping from vCenter to Prism Central or from NSX to Flow products indicates an intended functional correspondence. It does not establish identical APIs, policy behavior, performance or third-party integration. Test the features that matter to your estate.
Sizing from allocated resources
Copying every configured vCPU and gigabyte can produce an unnecessarily large target. Conversely, sizing from a quiet week can cause production contention. Use measured normal and peak utilization, growth, failover headroom and recovery requirements.
Ignoring network and identity dependencies
Applications often fail after migration because DNS, firewall rules, directory services, certificate authorities, monitoring endpoints or load balancers remain tied to the old location. Treat these as migration tasks, not post-cutover cleanup.
Modernizing everything at once
Different tiers have different value and risk. Modernize where the expected outcome is clear, rehost where speed is more important, and retire what no longer merits migration. A mixed strategy is usually more controllable than a single target for the entire estate.
Comparing only license prices
Total cost includes migration labor, dual running, storage, network transfer, support, training, backup, observability, security controls and ongoing cloud consumption. Build the comparison from your measured inventory and contract terms; the available vendor guidance does not establish a general cost winner.
