There is no single best video chat app. FaceTime is the easiest choice for an Apple household, Google Meet is the most convenient browser-first option for mixed devices, Zoom is strongest for conventional work meetings, Teams Free fits Microsoft users, Signal is the privacy-led choice, WhatsApp is best when the conversation already lives in a messaging group, and Discord works best for persistent communities.
The important comparison is not just how many people an app supports. Free meeting duration, device compatibility, account requirements, recording, screen sharing, privacy expectations, and host controls can matter more than the headline participant count. The limits below are published plan or account limits and can change by edition, geography, device, or software version.
Video chat apps compared
| App | Best for | Devices and access | Published free limit | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FaceTime | Apple households | Native Apple apps; Android and Windows users can join a browser-based call from an Apple-created link | Group calling on Apple devices; no duration figure is stated here | Cross-platform guests have a more limited web experience and cannot create the link |
| Google Meet | Browser-first mixed-device meetings | Supported browsers on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus mobile apps | Up to 100 people; one-to-one meetings up to 24 hours; three or more people up to 60 minutes without a qualifying subscription | Meeting creation and some controls depend on the Google account and edition |
| Zoom | Structured work meetings | Desktop and mobile apps, with account and host-setting requirements varying by use | Basic generally supports up to 100 people, but almost all Basic-hosted meetings end after 40 minutes | The free cutoff is shorter than Google Meet or Teams Free |
| Teams Free | Microsoft-connected users | Desktop, web, and mobile experiences with Microsoft account requirements | Up to 100 people and 60 minutes; direct group calls from a chat support up to 20 | Meeting recording is not included in the free tier |
| Signal | Privacy-oriented group calls | Signal app on supported devices | Up to 75 people | Everyone must use the latest version and belong to the same Signal group chat |
| Messaging-led family and friend calls | Mobile group calls support up to 32 people; desktop behavior and limits may vary | Up to 32 people on mobile group voice or video calls | Check the current behavior in the app and on the specific desktop platform before planning a large call | |
| Discord | Persistent communities and informal hangouts | Direct messages, group chats, and server voice channels across desktop and mobile | Up to 25 people in server video chat | It is community-oriented rather than optimized for formal meetings |
Participant limits should never be read in isolation. A 100-person service with a 40-minute cutoff may be a worse fit than a smaller service for a class, interview, or family event. Paid Google Workspace, Zoom, and Microsoft 365 editions can change duration, recording, capacity, breakout-room, moderation, and administration features.

Our recommendations by use case
FaceTime: best for Apple households
Choose FaceTime when most or all participants use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The native Apple experience is the main advantage: people can start from the calling tools already built into their devices instead of learning a separate meeting service.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
FaceTime can include Android and Windows participants through a web browser. However, this is a link-based exception, not full cross-platform parity. An Apple-device user must create the FaceTime link, and web participants do not get the same experience as people using the native Apple apps. If nobody in the group uses Apple hardware, FaceTime is therefore not the practical default.
FaceTime is particularly appealing for informal calls where the group already knows how to use it. SharePlay can also support watching or listening together, but availability depends on the app, content rights, subscription, device, and region. Treat SharePlay as a useful extra rather than a universal feature of every call.
Google Meet: best browser-first option
Google Meet is the strongest general-purpose choice when participants use a mixture of Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux, Android, and iOS devices. Google lists support for current Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari browsers, as well as mobile apps, so a participant can often join without installing a desktop application.
For personal accounts, Meet supports up to 100 participants. One-to-one meetings can last up to 24 hours, while meetings with three or more participants are limited to 60 minutes without a qualifying subscription. Those are useful free limits for ordinary family calls, interviews, study groups, and short presentations, but they should not be treated as universal limits for every Google Workspace edition.
Meeting creation generally requires a Google account. Depending on the meeting and organizer settings, people may be able to join through a link without a Google account, subject to organizer or organization approval. That makes Meet convenient for guests, but the host should test the exact access flow before a client meeting or event.
Meet also supports camera and microphone access through a built-in webcam or an external USB camera. If you are using a desktop computer, an older laptop, or a weak built-in camera, an external webcam for video calls can be a practical setup upgrade. Google recommends a 1080p camera for high-quality video use cases, but that recommendation does not establish that every 1080p webcam has the same image quality.
Zoom: best for conventional work meetings
Zoom remains a natural fit for scheduled meetings, interviews, presentations, and other situations where a host needs a clearly defined meeting workflow. Its familiar meeting link model, screen sharing, participant controls, and paid-plan options make it more meeting-oriented than a messaging-first app.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Zoom Basic generally supports up to 100 participants, but almost all meetings hosted by Basic users end after 40 minutes. That cutoff is the most important reason not to choose the free plan automatically. A short appointment may fit comfortably; a class, workshop, or recurring team meeting may not.
Zoom Pro meetings can last up to 30 hours and add features such as cloud recording and greater host control. Zoom Basic supports computer recording, but it does not provide the complete paid recording feature set. Recording availability can also depend on host settings, account type, and organizational policy, so confirm the exact plan before promising attendees a recording.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- HD lighting adjustment and autofocus: The Logitech webcam automatically fine-tunes the lighting, producing bright, razor-sharp images even in low-light settings. This makes it a great webcam for streaming and an ideal web camera for laptop use
- Advanced capture software: Easily create and share video content with this Logitech camera that is suitable for use as a desktop computer camera or a monitor webcam
- Stereo audio with dual mics: Capture natural sound during calls and recorded videos with this 1080p webcam, great as a video conference camera or a computer webcam
- Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video
Zoom usually requires an account to host or schedule a meeting, while participants can often join without creating an account. That distinction reduces guest friction, but the host still needs to configure the meeting and distribute the correct link.
Teams Free: best for Microsoft users
Teams Free makes the most sense when the group already uses Microsoft accounts, Microsoft services, or Teams chats. It supports instant and scheduled meetings, screen sharing, encryption, and up to 100 participants for a maximum meeting duration of 60 minutes.
Do not confuse a direct group call from a Teams chat with a Teams meeting. Direct group calls support up to 20 participants. For a larger group, use a meeting rather than trying to add everyone to a chat call.
Teams Free does not include meeting recording. Recording is available with qualifying Microsoft 365 subscriptions, so a business, school, or family that needs recordings should check the exact subscription and organizational settings instead of assuming the free app includes the feature.
Teams is a good choice for a Microsoft-connected meeting, but it may introduce more account and interface friction than Meet for a one-time guest call. Use it when its collaboration ecosystem is an advantage, not simply because it can display video.
Signal: best privacy-oriented choice
Signal is the clearest privacy-led recommendation in this group. Signal says its group video calls are private like its messages, and group calls support up to 75 participants.
The privacy benefit comes with specific participation requirements. Everyone must use the latest version of Signal, and every participant must belong to the same Signal group chat. Signal group calling is not anonymous: participants still need Signal accounts, current software, and membership in the shared group.
Signal is therefore ideal for a privacy-sensitive group that is willing to install the app and organize the call inside a Signal group. It is less convenient for inviting a large set of one-time guests who do not already use Signal.

WhatsApp: best when messaging is the priority
WhatsApp is the practical choice when the participants already coordinate in a WhatsApp conversation. Meta documents mobile group voice and video calls for up to 32 people, along with call links, the ability to mute participants, and messaging participants during a call.
This messaging integration is the main reason to choose WhatsApp. The group does not need to move from an established family, friend, or community conversation into a separate meeting platform.

In particular, do not assume that the mobile limit, call-link behavior, and desktop experience are identical.
Meta describes WhatsApp calls as end-to-end encrypted in its product communications. That is an important distinction from broader privacy questions involving accounts, contact discovery, data handling, and metadata. Call encryption alone should not be presented as proof that WhatsApp and Signal have identical privacy properties.
Discord: best for persistent communities
Discord is strongest when the group already lives in a Discord server or uses persistent direct messages and group chats. Video can be added to server voice channels, and Discord also supports video and screen sharing at the same time in direct messages and server voice channels.
Discord’s current support documentation lists a 25-person cap for server video chat. That is enough for many informal hangouts, gaming groups, clubs, and small communities, but it is not the best choice for a formal 50-person presentation or a meeting that depends on business-style scheduling and administration.
The service’s advantage is continuity. A community can return to the same server, text channel, or voice channel instead of creating a new meeting link every time. Its trade-off is that people unfamiliar with Discord may need more orientation than guests joining a simple Meet or Zoom link.
How to choose the right app
- If everyone uses Apple devices, start with FaceTime. It has the lowest setup friction for an Apple-only group. Use a FaceTime link when Android or Windows guests need to join, and make sure an Apple user creates the link.
- If devices are mixed and guests should use a browser, start with Google Meet. It supports the broadest browser and operating-system combination in this comparison. Check the 60-minute limit for meetings with three or more people on personal accounts.
- If the call is a conventional work meeting, compare Zoom, Meet, and Teams. Zoom is a familiar meeting-focused option; Meet is convenient for browser guests; Teams is the natural fit for a Microsoft-connected organization. Decide based on the participants’ existing accounts and the need for recording or administration.
- If privacy is the priority, choose Signal when everyone can meet its requirements. The group must use current Signal software and share a Signal group chat. Do not trade away those requirements by calling Signal anonymous or frictionless.
- If the group already communicates in WhatsApp, use WhatsApp for a casual call. Its call links and messaging during calls are useful, especially for families and friend groups. Confirm desktop behavior if some participants will not use phones.
- If the participants belong to an established Discord community, stay in Discord. Persistent channels are more valuable than a traditional meeting interface for informal communities. Check the 25-person server video limit.
Free-plan limits that can change the decision
Here are common scenarios where the duration limit matters more than the app’s name:

- A 30-minute one-to-one appointment: Google Meet’s personal-account allowance is far beyond the requirement, and Zoom Basic’s usual cutoff should also be sufficient. Device familiarity may decide the choice.
- A 55-minute group call: Google Meet and Teams Free publish 60-minute limits for the relevant free use cases. Zoom Basic’s usual 40-minute cutoff does not fit.
- A 90-minute group meeting: A free Meet personal account or Teams Free may not be sufficient. Investigate a qualifying paid edition or a different service and confirm its current plan terms before scheduling.
- A recorded meeting: Check the exact plan first. Teams Free does not include meeting recording, while qualifying Microsoft 365 subscriptions do. Zoom’s recording capabilities differ between Basic and paid plans. Meet recording is also edition- and configuration-dependent.
- A large informal call: Participant capacity alone is not enough. Signal supports up to 75 but requires shared group membership and current app versions; WhatsApp supports up to 32 on mobile; Discord server video supports up to 25.
If you expect to exceed a free duration limit, a paid plan may be appropriate. A clearly labeled option is to upgrade Zoom for longer meetings, compare Google Workspace for longer Meet calls, or investigate a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription when Teams recording and collaboration controls are needed. Confirm current pricing, availability, plan limits, and commercial terms on the provider’s official plan page before paying.
Screen sharing, recording, and accessibility
Screen sharing is available across the major meeting products, but the details differ. Discord documents using screen sharing alongside video. Meet, Zoom, and Teams provide meeting-oriented screen-sharing workflows, while the available host controls can depend on the account, plan, and organization.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Recording is more plan-sensitive than screen sharing. Zoom Basic supports computer recording but not the complete paid recording feature set. Teams Free does not include meeting recordings. Google Meet recording and other advanced controls depend on the relevant Google edition and configuration. If a recording is essential, test it with the actual host account rather than relying on a feature list for a different plan.
For accessibility, check captions, keyboard behavior, screen-reader compatibility, and browser support for the exact app and account you will use. Captions and other accessibility features can depend on plan and configuration. An app that works well for one participant may still create barriers for another because of device, browser, audio, or account differences.
A simple setup checklist
- Count participants and estimate duration. Include late starts, introductions, questions, and breaks. A meeting planned for exactly 60 minutes can still fail if the platform’s cutoff is strict.
- Check the host’s account and plan. The person creating the meeting may have different limits from a participant. Verify recording, duration, participant capacity, and guest access.
- Send the right kind of invitation. A FaceTime link needs an Apple creator. Signal participants need the same group chat. Teams calls with more than 20 people should be meetings rather than direct chat calls.
- Test the camera and microphone. Use the app’s preview or device settings before the call. A built-in camera is sufficient for many people, while an external USB camera can help when the built-in camera is damaged, poorly positioned, or inadequate for the setting.
- Choose a stable location. Move closer to the wireless router if necessary, avoid switching networks during the call, and position a light in front of rather than directly behind your face.
- Decide whether recording is permitted. Tell participants before recording and follow the rules that apply to your workplace, school, jurisdiction, or organization.
Optional video-call hardware
A headset with microphone can be useful when a laptop’s microphone and speakers create echo, when several people share a room, or when you need to avoid sound looping back into the call. This is an optional setup aid, not a tested ranking of headset audio quality.
Lighting is not an app requirement, but an optional ring light for video calls or desk light can help in a dim or backlit room. Use it as a lighting solution, not as evidence that one video-chat service produces better image quality.
For camera height and posture, a laptop stand for video calls can raise the screen so the camera is closer to eye level. It is a workspace accessory and is not necessary for any of the apps in this comparison.

The other person cannot see or hear you
- Confirm that the call is using the intended camera and microphone rather than a disconnected monitor, dock, or Bluetooth device.
- Check operating-system permissions. On Windows 11, look under Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. On macOS, use System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera or Microphone. On iPhone or iPad, use Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera or Microphone. Android labels vary, but the usual path is Settings > Apps > the calling app > Permissions.
- Check the browser’s site permission if you joined through Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Allow camera and microphone access for the meeting site, then reload the page if requested.
- Close another application that may have exclusive access to the camera or microphone, and rejoin the call.
The video is choppy or the call keeps dropping
Start with the least disruptive changes: close unnecessary browser tabs and applications, pause large downloads or uploads, stop cloud synchronization temporarily, and update the browser, app, and operating system. Google specifically recommends reducing unnecessary tabs and apps, pausing large transfers, updating software, and disabling video to reduce bandwidth.
If the connection remains unstable, turn off your camera while keeping audio enabled. Video consumes more bandwidth than audio, and an audio-only call is often preferable to repeatedly losing the entire meeting. If possible, use a wired connection or move nearer to the router, but do not assume that one app is universally better on weak Wi-Fi without an independent test.
The call ends unexpectedly
First compare the elapsed time with the host’s plan. A Google Meet personal-account meeting with three or more participants is limited to 60 minutes without a qualifying subscription. Teams Free lists a 60-minute maximum. Zoom Basic meetings generally end after 40 minutes. These cutoffs are normal plan behavior, not necessarily a camera or network failure.

- FaceTime: confirm that an Apple-device user created the link and that the guest is using a supported browser.
- Google Meet: check whether the organizer or organization requires approval or a particular account.
- Signal: confirm that the participant is in the same Signal group chat and has updated the app.
- Teams: use a meeting for groups larger than 20 instead of a direct group call from a chat.
- WhatsApp: verify the current mobile or desktop behavior on the participant’s device.
- Any service: copy the invitation again, check for a wrong or expired link, and make sure the participant has the required app, browser, account, camera, and microphone permissions.
What about Skype?
Skype should not be included as a current recommendation. Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025, and directs users toward Teams Free. Anyone replacing an old Skype workflow should decide whether Teams Free’s 60-minute meetings, 100-person limit, and account model fit the group, or whether Meet, Zoom, FaceTime, Signal, WhatsApp, or Discord is a better match.

Before you schedule a large or important call
Check the provider’s current official plan and support information immediately before paying or sending invitations. Confirm the host’s edition, maximum duration, participant count, recording availability, guest access, supported browser or app version, and any organization restrictions. Published limits are useful planning figures, but they are not guarantees that every account, country, device, or software release will behave identically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which free video chat app is best for a group call under an hour?
For three or more people, Google Meet and Teams Free publish 60-minute limits for the relevant free use cases, while Zoom Basic generally ends after 40 minutes. Choose Meet for browser flexibility, Teams for Microsoft-connected groups, and another app if the participants already share an Apple, Signal, WhatsApp, or Discord community.
Can Android and Windows users join a FaceTime call?
Yes, they can join a FaceTime call through a supported web browser when an Apple-device user creates and shares the FaceTime link. This is not full cross-platform FaceTime: the Apple user must create the link, and web participants have a more limited experience than users of the native Apple apps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs Signal group video calling anonymous?
No. Signal describes group video calls as private like its messages, but participants still need Signal accounts, current app versions, and membership in the same Signal group chat. Private does not mean anonymous.
Why did my Zoom, Meet, or Teams call stop by itself?
Check the host’s plan and the number of participants. Zoom Basic meetings generally have a 40-minute cutoff, Google Meet personal-account meetings with three or more participants have a 60-minute limit without a qualifying subscription, and Teams Free lists a 60-minute maximum.
Which video chat apps support recording?
Recording depends on the plan and account. Zoom Basic supports computer recording but not the full paid recording feature set. Teams Free does not include meeting recording, while qualifying Microsoft 365 subscriptions do. Google Meet recording is also edition- and configuration-dependent, so verify the host account before scheduling.
The Bottom Line
Choose the app your participants can enter easily and that fits the call’s real constraints. FaceTime wins for Apple households, Google Meet for mixed-device browser access, Zoom for structured meetings, Teams Free for Microsoft users, Signal for privacy, WhatsApp for messaging groups, and Discord for persistent communities. Confirm the current plan limits before relying on duration, recording, or participant capacity.
