For a Valheim dedicated server, choose Gale if your modpack may combine Thunderstore and Hexium. Choose r2modman for a Thunderstore-only community that needs mature profiles, exports, updates and configuration editing. Thunderstore Mod Manager is the simplest Windows-first Thunderstore option, while Vortex makes sense only when your required mods are published on Nexus Mods.
Whichever manager you select, install and maintain a separate server-side BepInEx setup. Opening a client profile does not install anything in the dedicated-server directory. A reliable setup treats the client profile and server installation as two coordinated copies.
Which Valheim mod manager fits your server?
| Manager | Catalog focus | Desktop platforms listed by the installation guide | Best fit | Dedicated-server approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gale | Thunderstore and Hexium | Windows, Linux | Mixed-source packs or Linux clients | Use its profile as the source of truth, then deploy the required BepInEx and server-side files separately |
| r2modman | Thunderstore | Windows, Linux, macOS | Thunderstore communities that need profiles, exports, direct installs, updates and config editing | Export or reproduce the profile in the server directory; launching the client profile alone is not deployment |
| Thunderstore Mod Manager | Thunderstore | Windows | Windows users who want a straightforward Thunderstore workflow | Install the server copy of BepInEx and mods independently or use a compatible synchronization workflow |
| Vortex | Nexus Mods | Not stated in the cited comparison | Servers whose required Valheim mods are on Nexus Mods | Verify every mod’s dedicated-server instructions and copy server components separately |
| VSMM | Server-focused workflow using Gale-style profiles and Thunderstore packages | Not stated | Administrators who want profile-code or .r2z based server synchronization |
Accepts profile codes or .r2z files and resolves packages through thunderstore-engine |
The comparison reflects documented catalog coverage and features, not independent adoption, reliability or performance testing. No cited source publishes those statistics, so there is no evidence-based “fastest” or “most reliable” winner.
Why a dedicated server needs more than a client profile
A mod manager controls files for the computer on which it runs. A dedicated Valheim server is a separate process with its own game directory, BepInEx loader and configuration files. Installing a mod in your desktop profile changes the desktop copy; it does not silently change a rented or self-hosted server.

The official Valheim dedicated-server guide describes the server’s installation and operation. The BepInExPack Valheim listing directs users toward Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager or r2modman and includes automated server-installation instructions. Those references establish the practical rule: prepare the server directory as its own installation, then keep it aligned with the client profile.
Client-side, server-side and shared mods
Read each mod’s documentation before deployment. A client-only visual or interface mod normally belongs only in player profiles. A server-side gameplay or world-generation mod must be present in the server’s BepInEx directory. Mods that exchange data with the server commonly require matching versions on both sides. Do not assume that a package is safe to install everywhere simply because it appears in a profile.

What “synchronization” should mean
For a small group, synchronization can be a documented checklist: the administrator exports a profile, installs the server-required subset, records versions and distributes the same profile to players. For a larger group, use a tool that imports a profile code or archive and can be rerun after changes. Either way, synchronization is a deliberate deployment step, not a side effect of pressing “Launch” in a client manager.
Gale: the strongest choice for mixed Thunderstore and Hexium packs
Gale’s project README documents support for both Thunderstore and Hexium, and its changelog records Hexium support for Valheim. That makes it the safest choice when one pack must draw from both ecosystems instead of forcing administrators to maintain two separate catalogs. The README also states support for more than 150 games, so Valheim is part of a broad multi-game application rather than a one-off utility.
When Gale is the right choice
- Your pack contains, or may later contain, packages from Hexium as well as Thunderstore.
- Members use Windows and Linux desktops; the cited comparison lists Gale for both.
- You want one profile-oriented workflow while retaining the ability to source packages from two supported ecosystems.
Gale’s server limitation
Gale’s catalog coverage does not remove the dedicated-server boundary. Build the profile on an administrator workstation, identify which packages are server-compatible, and place the server components in the dedicated-server BepInEx directory. Keep a copy of the exported profile and configuration files so another administrator can reproduce the setup.
Obtaining Gale safely
Gale’s FAQ says its only official sources are those listed in the project’s README, principally Thunderstore and GitHub Releases. Avoid lookalike download pages and repackaged installers. Before handing an installer to an administrator, confirm that the download originates from one of those project-listed locations.

r2modman: the practical Thunderstore standard for organized groups
r2modman is centered on Thunderstore and documents the features most server communities need for repeatable administration: named profiles, profile exports, direct installation, updates and configuration editing. Its Thunderstore listing shows version 3.2.20 for ebkr/Thunderstore in a listing crawled in 2026; treat that as the version shown in that listing, not a promise that every mirror or future release has the same number.
Why administrators choose r2modman
- Profiles: keep separate vanilla, testing and production mod sets without overwriting one another.
- Exports: hand players or another administrator a reproducible profile instead of asking them to search for packages manually.
- Direct installation and updates: install packages from the Thunderstore catalog and review available updates from the same interface.
- Configuration editing: change supported settings without opening every configuration file in a text editor.
- Platform coverage: the cited comparison lists Windows, Linux and macOS.
Using r2modman with a dedicated server
- Create a profile for the server community and give it a clear name such as
Valheim-Production. - Install the Valheim BepInEx pack through the documented method, then add the approved Thunderstore packages.
- Open each package’s documentation and label it as client-only, server-only or shared. Do not copy client-only files into the server directory.
- Export the profile for players. Separately install the server-required files in the dedicated-server directory and preserve the server’s configuration files.
- Restart the server after changes, test with one player, and record the profile version before announcing the update.
That process uses r2modman’s documented strengths without confusing a profile export with a server deployment.
Thunderstore Mod Manager: a Windows-first route
Thunderstore Mod Manager is a sensible choice when every administrator and player is on Windows and the entire pack comes from Thunderstore. The installation guide lists it as a Windows option alongside Gale and r2modman. Its narrow catalog focus can be an advantage: fewer source choices mean fewer decisions for a team that has standardized on Thunderstore.
The same dedicated-server rule applies. Install and verify BepInEx in the server directory, deploy only packages that support server use, and maintain a separate record of the server’s files. If the pack later needs Hexium packages or a non-Thunderstore source, reassess the manager instead of assuming the catalog will cover it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Vortex: use it when Nexus Mods is the requirement
Vortex pulls from Nexus Mods, so it belongs in a different decision branch from the Thunderstore-centered managers. Select it when the Valheim mods you require are published on Nexus Mods and their documentation supports your server architecture.
Do not choose Vortex merely because it is familiar from another game. First inventory the exact Valheim packages, check whether each has a dedicated-server installation method, and confirm that all administrators can reproduce the same versions. A Nexus-based client collection still requires a separate server-side BepInEx installation.

VSMM: a server-focused synchronization option
VSMM is designed around server administration rather than only desktop mod browsing. It follows Gale profile synchronization, accepts profile codes or .r2z files, and resolves packages through thunderstore-engine. That is useful when an administrator wants a server to consume a known profile artifact instead of manually rebuilding a package list.
When VSMM helps
- The team already maintains Gale-style profiles.
- You want to distribute a profile code or
.r2zarchive as the handoff between desktop and server administration. - You need a repeatable import process for a hosted or headless server.
What it does not change
Synchronization still requires judgment about client-only and server-side mods. Review package documentation, back up the current server files, import the approved profile, and restart before inviting the whole group. A profile resolver can reduce copying errors; it cannot make an incompatible client-only mod safe for a server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to set up a maintainable modded Valheim server
- Prepare the vanilla server. Follow the official Valheim dedicated-server guide to install, configure and start the server once without mods. Confirm that players can connect before introducing BepInEx.
- Choose one catalog and manager. Pick Gale for Thunderstore-plus-Hexium coverage, r2modman for a Thunderstore profile workflow, Thunderstore Mod Manager for a Windows-only Thunderstore team, Vortex for Nexus Mods, or VSMM when profile-driven server imports are the priority.
- Create a production profile. Give it a stable name and keep experimental packages in a separate profile. Do not update production immediately when a new package version appears.
- Install the loader on the server. Place the Valheim BepInEx files in the dedicated-server directory using the pack’s documented server procedure. Verify that the server starts before adding gameplay mods.
- Classify every package. Record whether it is client-only, server-only or shared, along with its version and configuration requirements. This inventory is more valuable than a screenshot of a manager window because it explains what actually belongs on the server.
- Deploy the server subset. Copy or synchronize only the files required by the server. Preserve a backup of the previous BepInEx and configuration directories so you can roll back one change.
- Distribute the client profile. Use the manager’s export feature, profile code or
.r2zarchive where supported. Tell players to import the exact profile rather than install packages individually. - Test in a controlled restart. Stop the server, apply the change, start it, and connect with one test account. Check world loading, login, mod errors and the server console before opening it to everyone.
- Record the release. Write down the manager profile name, package versions, configuration changes and date. When a problem appears, this record identifies the last change and gives you a rollback target.
Keeping client and server mod lists in sync
Use one authoritative manifest
Choose the production profile as the authoritative list, but annotate it with a server-use column. A package can be present in the profile for clients while being intentionally absent from the server. The manifest should include package name, version, side (client, server or shared), configuration owner and approval date.
Distribute immutable handoffs
For r2modman, use its documented export workflow. For Gale or VSMM-based processes, use the supported profile handoff, including profile codes or .r2z files where applicable. Avoid sending a changing folder over a chat attachment; a named archive or code gives players a precise target.
Update in two stages
- Duplicate the production profile as a test profile.
- Update one or a small group of packages.
- Start a test server with a backup of the production files.
- Connect with a clean client import and exercise the affected features.
- Promote the tested profile and server subset together.
Keep configuration with the release
Many Valheim mods store behavior in configuration files rather than in the package itself. Export or back up those files whenever you change a setting. A player who imports the right package versions but keeps an old configuration can still see different behavior from the server.
Troubleshooting common dedicated-server failures
The server starts vanilla after installing mods
Check that BepInEx was installed in the dedicated-server directory, not only in the desktop game’s directory. Confirm that the server was stopped during the copy and restarted afterward. If the loader’s documented installation test fails, remove the mod packages, restore the backup and reinstall the loader before debugging individual mods.

Players receive version or connection errors
Compare the authoritative profile with each player’s imported profile. Verify package versions, shared-mod requirements and configuration files. A client-only package mismatch may not matter, but a shared package mismatch commonly does; consult that package’s documentation rather than guessing.
A profile contains a package the server cannot load
Separate client-only packages from the server deployment. Keep the package in the player profile if it is safe there, but do not copy its plugins or configuration into the server. If the package documentation is unclear, leave it out of production until the author states that dedicated-server use is supported.
An update breaks the world or startup
Stop the server, restore the previous package and configuration backup, and return clients to the matching exported profile. Test the update in a duplicate profile before trying it again. Keeping production and test profiles separate is the reason profile managers are valuable for long-running worlds.
The manager cannot find a package
Check the catalog first. Gale can draw from Thunderstore and Hexium; r2modman and Thunderstore Mod Manager are Thunderstore-centered; Vortex uses Nexus Mods. A missing package may indicate that you selected the wrong ecosystem, not that the package has disappeared. Confirm the manager’s official source and avoid third-party repackaging sites.
Choosing hosting for a modded dedicated server
If you rent server capacity, evaluate the administration features rather than a brand name. A suitable service should let you access the server’s BepInEx directory, restart the process, create and restore backups, and upload or synchronize profile and configuration files. Without those controls, even the best desktop manager leaves you dependent on manual support requests.
- File access: you need to upload BepInEx plugins, configuration files and approved server-side packages.
- Reliable restarts: mod changes require a controlled stop and start.
- Backups: preserve world data and the previous working mod set before updates.
- Synchronization: profile-code, archive or file-transfer workflows reduce transcription errors.
- Logs: access to startup and mod logs is essential for diagnosing loader and dependency failures.
Confirm these capabilities with the provider before committing; support for a game server does not automatically mean support for Gale, r2modman, Hexium or every Thunderstore package.
Download and trust checks
Use the official project locations identified by each manager. Gale’s FAQ specifically names the project README, Thunderstore and GitHub Releases as its official sources. For r2modman and Thunderstore Mod Manager, begin with their Thunderstore listings. For Vortex, use the official distribution channel associated with Nexus Mods. Do not install executables from lookalike download sites, and keep an administrator’s record of the installer version used for the server.

Decision checklist
- Does the pack need both Thunderstore and Hexium? Choose Gale.
- Is the pack entirely on Thunderstore and do you need profiles, exports, updates and config editing? Choose r2modman.
- Are all users on Windows and the workflow strictly Thunderstore? Thunderstore Mod Manager is appropriate.
- Are the required packages on Nexus Mods rather than Thunderstore? Evaluate Vortex.
- Do you want profile-code or
.r2zimports for a server-focused workflow? Evaluate VSMM. - Regardless of manager, have you installed BepInEx and the server-side mod subset in the dedicated-server directory? That step is mandatory.
