IsThereAnyDeal is the best overall tracker for most Steam wishlist owners because it can import a complete wishlist, compare legitimate offers across stores, retain price history, and send alerts only when a deal meets rules you set. Choose SteamDB if your priority is Steam-only historical lows, or stay with Steam’s built-in wishlist if you want the least setup and basic discount emails.

Which Steam price tracker should you use?

The right choice depends on what “best price” means to you. A tracker can answer three different questions:

  • Has this game reached a genuinely low price before? SteamDB is the strongest fit because its game pages show Steam price history and recorded lows.
  • Is the game cheaper at another legitimate store? IsThereAnyDeal is designed for cross-store comparison and can import your Steam wishlist into a Waitlist.
  • Can I receive a simple warning when Steam discounts the game? Steam’s own wishlist is sufficient when you do not need custom rules or other stores.
Service Best for What it does Main trade-off
IsThereAnyDeal Cross-store shopping and custom alerts Imports an entire Steam wishlist, adds games to a Waitlist, compares prices across stores, keeps price history, and supports configurable email and RSS rules. There are more choices to configure, and you must verify that a listed store, currency and key format work in your region.
SteamDB Steam-specific history and recorded lows Provides game price-history pages, watchlists, manual Steam-wishlist import, sale filters and a browser extension that displays recorded-low context on Steam store pages. Its focus is Steam rather than broad comparison across stores, and it requires using a third-party site or extension.
Steam wishlist Lowest setup effort Valve documents email notifications for qualifying discounts, including discounts of 20% or more, as well as certain featured or configured deals. It offers less control over alert thresholds, and the documented capability does not include cross-store comparison.

For a typical PC player with a large backlog, start with IsThereAnyDeal and use SteamDB when you want to check whether a sale is close to the game’s historical low. If you only buy on Steam and do not want another service, keep the Steam wishlist enabled.

Why IsThereAnyDeal is the best overall choice

IsThereAnyDeal’s central advantage is that it turns a Steam wishlist into a broader buying list. Its welcome documentation explicitly supports importing an entire Steam wishlist, placing those games on a Waitlist, and setting notification rules. Instead of receiving an alert for every nominal discount, you can define conditions so notifications arrive only when an offer is good enough for you.

What it covers

  • Wishlist import: Bring in the games you already selected on Steam rather than rebuilding the list manually.
  • Waitlist monitoring: Keep imported games under ongoing watch for qualifying offers.
  • Multiple stores: Compare available prices beyond Steam, which is useful when a publisher sells the same PC game through more than one authorized storefront.
  • Price history: Review how current offers compare with earlier prices instead of judging a discount from the publisher’s list price alone.
  • Rule-based notifications: Customize conditions and receive alerts by email or RSS.

How to set it up

  1. Open IsThereAnyDeal and choose the option to import your Steam wishlist.
  2. Review the imported games and place the titles you actually want to monitor on the Waitlist.
  3. Open the notification or rule controls for the Waitlist.
  4. Set conditions that match your buying plan, such as a target price, a required discount or the stores you are willing to use. The exact conditions available are shown by the service when you configure a rule.
  5. Choose email, RSS or both, then save the rule.
  6. When an alert arrives, inspect the offer’s store, currency, activation region and edition before purchasing.

The important distinction is that the alert is rule-driven rather than simply “the game changed price.” That reduces noise for a large wishlist, but it also means your rules need to reflect your real limits. A rule that accepts every store can surface offers you cannot activate; a rule that is too strict can hide worthwhile sales.

When SteamDB is the better tracker

SteamDB is the specialist option for the question, “Is this close to the lowest Steam price ever recorded?” Its price-tracker page says you can look up any game, inspect previous discounts, watch games, or manually import a Steam wishlist. SteamDB also documents a browser extension that shows the lowest recorded Steam price on store pages.

Its historical context

SteamDB states that it tracks prices in 41 Steam-supported currencies and has data going back to 2012. The page does not provide a publication year for those figures, so treat them as the service’s current stated coverage rather than as a dated independent study. A long history is useful because a 50% discount can still be ordinary for one title and unusually good for another.

How to check a game

  1. Search for the game on SteamDB.
  2. Open the game’s price-history page and identify previous sale prices in your currency.
  3. Compare the current Steam price with the recorded low and with recent sale levels.
  4. Use the watch function if you want the title kept on a SteamDB list.
  5. If you already maintain a Steam wishlist, use SteamDB’s manual wishlist-import option instead of adding every game individually.
  6. When browsing a Steam store page, use the documented browser extension if you want recorded-low context visible there.

SteamDB is especially useful during major sale events. It lets you distinguish a headline discount from a price that is actually unusual for that game. It does not, however, answer whether another authorized store has a better offer, so use IsThereAnyDeal for that comparison.

When Steam’s built-in wishlist is enough

Steam’s own wishlist is the simplest baseline because it requires no additional tracker account or browser extension. Valve’s Steamworks Wishlists documentation says email notifications may be sent for a variety of trigger actions and specifically describes qualifying discounts at or above 20%, including curated feature spots, weeklong deals or custom-configured discounts.

Set up the basic workflow

  1. Add each game to your Steam wishlist from its store page.
  2. Keep the email address associated with your Steam account current.
  3. Allow Steam account emails and check that messages are not being filtered into spam.
  4. When a wishlist message arrives, open the Steam store page and confirm the discount applies to the edition you intend to buy.

This approach works well if you buy only through Steam and are comfortable with Valve’s qualifying-discount rules. It is less suitable if you want a 30%, 60% or fixed-price threshold of your own, a complete historical chart, or a comparison with other stores.

How to tell whether a Steam sale is actually good

A percentage discount is not a complete measure of value. Use the following checks in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Compare the current price with the recorded low

Look at the game’s SteamDB history. If the current price is close to the lowest recorded price in your currency, waiting may produce only a small saving. If it is far above that low, add the game to a tracker rather than buying on impulse.

2. Check recent sale behavior

A recorded low can be years old. Compare the current offer with the game’s recent sale prices to see whether the old low is still a realistic target. SteamDB’s history is designed for this context; do not treat one historical number as a promise that the same price will return.

3. Compare authorized stores

Use IsThereAnyDeal to see whether a lower offer is available through another store it tracks. The cheapest displayed number is useful only if the seller is legitimate and the resulting key or license can be activated in your region.

4. Match the edition and package

Check whether you are comparing a standard edition, deluxe edition, bundle, downloadable content package or an upgrade. A lower price for a different package is not a lower price for the game you wanted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Confirm currency and activation region

Prices and redemption rights can vary by country. Before paying, verify the store’s currency, the countries where the key or license activates, and any regional restrictions. Do not assume that a price shown in a converted currency will remain available at checkout.

6. Check DRM and launcher requirements

Two offers can contain the same game but require different launchers or account links. Confirm the DRM or launcher stated on the store page and decide whether it fits your setup before treating the offer as equivalent to a Steam purchase.

Choosing alert rules that do not waste your time

Alerts are useful only when they reduce the effort of checking prices. Build rules around decisions you would actually make.

For a fixed budget

Set a maximum price in your local currency when the tracker supports that condition. This is clearer than a percentage because list prices differ widely between games. Recheck the currency setting if you move, travel or compare offers from a store that displays a different currency.

For a preferred discount

Use a discount threshold when you care about the size of the reduction from the listed price. Remember that a large percentage can still be less attractive than a smaller discount on a historically low base price; use the history view before buying.

For a “near the low” strategy

Use SteamDB to establish the game’s recorded and recent lows, then configure IsThereAnyDeal rules around the price you would consider acceptable. This combines Steam-specific history with cross-store availability without assuming that every store has the same sale calendar.

For a store-restricted strategy

Limit notifications to stores you already trust and whose keys or licenses activate in your region. If the service presents a store you do not recognize, investigate it before purchase rather than broadening the rule simply to obtain more alerts.

For a low-noise inbox

Use RSS where it fits your workflow, or keep email rules narrow enough that each message represents a realistic purchase. A large imported wishlist with unrestricted alerts can produce more notifications than you can evaluate.

A practical workflow for a large wishlist

You do not have to choose one service for every task. A two-stage workflow is often more efficient:

  1. Import once: Bring your Steam wishlist into IsThereAnyDeal and move only active targets to its Waitlist.
  2. Set buying rules: Configure the price, discount and store conditions that match your budget and region.
  3. Validate history: When an alert arrives, open the game in SteamDB and compare the offer with its recorded and recent Steam prices.
  4. Validate the listing: Confirm the edition, currency, activation region, DRM and seller before checkout.
  5. Buy or defer: Purchase when the offer satisfies both your rule and your verification checks; otherwise leave the game watched.

If you never buy outside Steam, simplify this to Steam wishlist emails plus SteamDB history checks. If you want no additional service at all, Steam’s wishlist remains a functional minimum.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a 20% Steam alert is your personal target

The 20% figure comes from Valve’s documented qualifying-discount example. It is not a recommendation that every game is worth buying at 20% off. Use price history and your own budget to decide whether the alert is actionable.

Treating the lowest historical price as guaranteed to return

SteamDB records past prices; it does not guarantee a future sale date or price. Use the record as context, not as a promise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing unlike editions

Bundles, deluxe editions and add-on packages can make a cross-store price look artificially low. Match the product contents before comparing totals.

Ignoring regional activation

A key that is inexpensive in one market may not activate in another. Check the seller’s region statement and the activation details shown for your location.

Installing an extension without considering access

SteamDB’s documented extension adds recorded-low information to Steam pages, but any browser extension is an additional piece of software. Install it only if you are comfortable granting the permissions it requests, and use the tracker’s website instead if you prefer not to install extensions.

Leaving obsolete games on every list

Remove titles you no longer intend to buy from your Waitlist, watchlists and Steam wishlist. Smaller lists make alerts easier to evaluate and reduce accidental purchases of editions you have already replaced or no longer want.

Decision guide

Your priority Best fit Reason
One-click simplicity and Steam-only buying Steam wishlist It is already part of Steam and can send qualifying discount emails.
Knowing whether today’s Steam price is a historical low SteamDB Its price-history pages, recorded-low context and watchlists focus on Steam data.
Comparing several stores and filtering alerts IsThereAnyDeal It imports a full Steam wishlist, uses a Waitlist, compares stores and supports configurable email or RSS rules.
Lowest possible setup effort with occasional checks Steam wishlist plus manual SteamDB lookups You receive Valve’s basic alerts and consult history only when a game is discounted.
A large backlog with strict spending limits IsThereAnyDeal plus SteamDB Rules reduce noise, while SteamDB supplies historical context before checkout.

Final checks before you pay

  • Is the store legitimate and authorized to sell the game?
  • Does the displayed currency match the amount you will actually be charged?
  • Will the key or license activate in your country?
  • Are you buying the same edition and package you compared?
  • Does the product use Steam, another launcher or additional DRM?
  • Is the current price close enough to the game’s historical and recent lows for you?

These checks matter more than a headline discount. A tracker can identify an attractive number, but only you can confirm that the offer is usable for your account and region.
