The best SSH client depends on where you connect from and how you work. OpenSSH is a practical choice if you prefer a terminal; PuTTY is a free SSH and Telnet option to consider for Windows; and Termius is a candidate when you want one product across desktop and mobile. Android users can also consider ConnectBot as a dedicated mobile option, but check its current availability and capabilities before relying on it.

How to choose an SSH client

Start with the devices you use, then decide whether you want to manage connections in a terminal or a graphical interface. A command-line client can be efficient if you already work in a shell. A graphical client can make saved hosts and connection settings easier to manage. If you move between desktop and phone, check whether the same product supports both and whether the features you need are available on each platform.

  • Platform coverage: Confirm that the client supports every operating system you use, including the specific mobile or desktop version you need.
  • Host and key management: Check how it saves server details and handles SSH keys, and whether those records stay on your device or synchronize through an account or cloud service.
  • File transfer and networking: Look for SFTP or SCP if you transfer files, and port forwarding if you need tunnels.
  • Cost and limits: Verify current prices and which plan includes the capabilities you need. No current pricing or complete plan limits are established here.
  • Security compatibility: If you use a hardware security key, confirm that the client, server configuration, SSH key type, and key model work together.

SSH client options at a glance

Option Platforms or focus established here Best fit What to verify
OpenSSH Microsoft documents setup and first use on Windows; command-line workflow. People comfortable connecting from a terminal. Installation and setup for your specific operating system.
PuTTY Official page describes it as a free SSH and Telnet client; Windows-oriented. People seeking a straightforward graphical SSH/Telnet client for Windows. Current download, supported builds, and whether its features fit your workflow.
Termius Vendor lists Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. People who want a single product across desktop and mobile. Platform-specific feature availability, plan restrictions, pricing, and account or cloud requirements.
ConnectBot Described in a secondary overview as an open-source Android SSH client. Android users seeking a dedicated mobile client. Current maintenance, store availability, and whether it supports the capabilities you require.
SkerrySSH Its project page lists Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android. People willing to investigate an open-source cross-platform alternative. Release status, download safety, signing, and features against the project’s current documentation.

Which client fits each workflow?

For a command-line workflow: OpenSSH

If you are comfortable using a terminal, OpenSSH avoids choosing a separate graphical application just to make an SSH connection. On Windows, Microsoft provides documentation for installing and getting started with OpenSSH. Follow the instructions for your Windows edition and environment rather than assuming it is already installed or configured. The material available here does not establish equivalent current setup instructions for macOS or Linux, so check the relevant operating-system documentation for those platforms.

For a free SSH and Telnet client: PuTTY

PuTTY is worth considering if you want a Windows-oriented graphical client and also need Telnet. Its official page describes it as free and as supporting SSH and Telnet. Those descriptions do not establish a particular current version, platform build, or compatibility with every advanced workflow; check the official download and documentation before installing it.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

For desktop and mobile in one product: Termius

Termius explicitly lists Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Its feature page names host management, SFTP, port forwarding, SSH key management, FIDO2 security keys, and encrypted vaults. These are vendor-stated capabilities, not an independent assessment; availability may vary by platform or plan. Confirm the exact feature and account requirements before moving host records or keys into it.

Termius also says its infrastructure data is end-to-end encrypted and stored locally for direct server connections. Those are vendor security claims, not independently audited findings here. Readers with strict security requirements should review the vendor’s current technical documentation and decide whether its storage and synchronization model is appropriate.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

For SSH from Android: ConnectBot

ConnectBot is described by a secondary overview as an open-source Android SSH client. Treat that as a starting point rather than confirmation of its current maintenance or availability: check the official project and app-store listings before installing it. Do not assume a mobile client has a desktop counterpart or synchronizes saved hosts unless its current documentation explicitly says so.

For an open-source cross-platform option to investigate: SkerrySSH

The SkerrySSH project page lists Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android and describes the project as actively developed. Because those details come from the project itself, verify the latest release, signing, download source, and feature set directly before choosing it, especially for systems that hold sensitive credentials.

What to check before moving hosts or keys

  1. List your devices. Write down the desktop and mobile operating systems from which you need to connect. Do not infer cross-platform support from a product’s name or from a listing for just one device.
  2. Choose terminal or GUI. If you want shell-based connections, investigate OpenSSH and check the setup steps for your operating system. If you want a graphical interface, compare the client’s host organization and connection workflow.
  3. Identify required features. Decide whether you need file transfer, port forwarding, saved hosts, or hardware-key authentication. Confirm each on the platform where you will use it.
  4. Review where credentials live. Read the client’s documentation for key storage, synchronization, and account requirements. For vendor encryption claims, distinguish what the vendor states from what has been independently verified.
  5. Check the current release and terms. Use the official project or vendor source for downloads, maintenance status, and plan details. Do this before importing a large host list or making the client part of a security-sensitive workflow.

When a FIDO2 security key is relevant

A hardware security key may be useful when your SSH client and server configuration support security-key authentication. Termius lists FIDO2 security keys among its features, but that does not establish that every client, server, or key model is compatible. Verify the precise SSH key type and product combination in the relevant client and server documentation before buying or configuring a key.
