The best smart lock depends less on a single ranking than on your door, preferred smart-home platform, backup-entry plan, and tolerance for battery maintenance. For most buyers, the strongest 2026 shortlist is the Level Lock Pro for a discreet premium installation, the Schlage Sense Pro for hands-free Apple entry, the Aqara Smart Lock U400 for fingerprints and UWB, and an August retrofit smart lock if you want to keep your existing exterior key cylinder.
This guide synthesizes Consumer Reports’ 2026 laboratory roundup, Tom’s Guide’s reported hands-on testing of the Schlage Sense Pro, TechRadar’s evaluation of the August Smart Lock Pro, and manufacturer specifications. iTechGuides did not independently install or attack-test these locks, so manufacturer claims—such as battery life, fingerprint accuracy, weather resistance, and UWB performance—are identified as claims rather than independent results.
Our smart-lock recommendations for 2026
| Pick | Best for | Why consider it | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level Lock Pro | Discreet premium design and Apple/Matter homes | Hides most electronics inside the door and supports Apple Home Key, Matter-over-Thread, touch access, NFC fobs, guest sharing, activity history, and a physical key. | Higher price and more compatibility work; Matter remote access requires suitable hub equipment. |
| Schlage Sense Pro | Hands-free Apple entry | Combines Apple Home Key, Matter-over-Thread, keypad codes, one-touch locking, and Schlage’s UWB-based Converge feature. | No keyway, so keypad, phone/watch, battery alerts, and emergency power become especially important. |
| Aqara Smart Lock U400 | Fingerprint, UWB, and rechargeable power | Offers fingerprint access, passcodes, NFC cards, mechanical keys, Apple Home Key, Samsung Wallet support through SmartThings, and broad ecosystem integration. | Several headline performance figures are manufacturer claims, and regional availability and hub requirements need checking. |
| August Smart Lock Pro or another August retrofit model | Keeping the exterior key and existing cylinder | Replaces the interior mechanism rather than the whole deadbolt, making it a useful direction for renters and homeowners with compatible hardware. | Compatibility depends heavily on the existing deadbolt, interior clearance, alignment, and the bridge or adapter bundle. |
| Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, or Kwikset Halo Touch | Comparing mainstream keypad and biometric options | These families cover common needs such as keypad entry, app management, alerts, guest access, and—in the Kwikset’s case—fingerprint entry. | Exact features vary by model, module, and generation; names such as Encode and Assure do not identify one universal specification. |
There is no responsible single “best overall” choice for every door. A lock that is excellent for an Apple Home household may be a poor choice for a renter, a multipoint door, or a family that needs a physical key. Treat the table as a starting shortlist, then use the compatibility and failure-mode checks below.

Consumer Reports says its 2026 roundup covers several distinct categories: Wi-Fi-capable locks, fingerprint models, Apple Home Key models, Bluetooth-only locks, and retrofit locks. Its tested brands include August, Eufy, Kwikset, Schlage, Wyze, and Yale. The publication says its evaluation considers smartphone alerts, remote locking and unlocking, geofencing, voice control through major platforms, shareable electronic keys, access logs, and tamper alarms.
Consumer Reports also separately describes laboratory evaluation of physical attack resistance, including kick-in, drilling, and picking resistance. That is different evidence from a manufacturer listing a security grade, connectivity feature, or battery estimate. A product’s smart features do not automatically make its deadbolt harder to force.
Tom’s Guide reported testing the Schlage Sense Pro on a door for more than two months in August 2026. That supports describing the Sense Pro as a product with published hands-on testing by Tom’s Guide; it does not mean iTechGuides performed the same installation or reached the same result. TechRadar’s coverage provides the relevant published evaluation for the August Smart Lock Pro and identifies it as a retrofit design.

The Level Lock Pro and Aqara U400 information in this guide is primarily based on official specifications and product announcements in the supplied research. That distinction matters: their feature lists are useful for purchase planning, but claims such as battery duration, fingerprint recognition accuracy, or UWB behavior should not be mistaken for independent test results.
Best discreet premium lock: Level Lock Pro
The Level Lock Pro is the unusual choice for buyers who do not want a large touchscreen or keypad on the outside of the door. Level puts the electronics inside the door, preserving a conventional-looking exterior. That is an aesthetic and usability advantage—not proof that the lock is more resistant to burglary than a conventional deadbolt.
Level lists Apple Home Key, Matter-over-Thread, built-in door-status detection, touch access, NFC key fobs, guest sharing, activity history, auto-lock and unlock, a physical key, and remote control when a Wi-Fi bridge or Matter-over-Thread hub is present. The listed price is $349. Level also lists an ANSI Grade 1/A rating and BHMA AAA certification, plus an estimated nine-to-12-month battery range from one CR2 battery.
The most important caveat is installation and ecosystem fit. Level’s published compatibility requirements include a 2.375- or 2.75-inch backset, a 1.75-to-2-inch door thickness, and a standard 2.125-inch bore. Those measurements are not universal, and a retailer product title is not a substitute for checking the manufacturer’s compatibility information.
Level’s installation guidance emphasizes correct strike-plate alignment and testing the bolt with the door open before relying on the lock. That advice is especially important for a motorized lock: a bolt that binds against the frame can produce poor battery life, failed locking, or a motor that cannot complete its cycle.
Choose it if: you want an understated lock, use Apple Home or Matter, and are willing to verify the door and hub requirements. Skip it if: you need a built-in keypad, do not want to maintain a bridge or controller, or cannot confirm that your existing deadbolt and door geometry are compatible.
Best for hands-free Apple entry: Schlage Sense Pro
The Schlage Sense Pro is aimed at households that want more than tap-to-unlock convenience. It supports Matter-over-Thread, Apple Home Key, keypad codes, one-touch locking, and remote management through the Schlage Home app. Schlage’s UWB-based Converge technology is designed to evaluate movement toward the door and offers Intuitive, Touch, and Delay hands-free-entry modes.
Apple Home Key can be a particularly convenient backup to opening an app, provided the household uses a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch and has configured the required Apple Home setup. The keypad gives other household members or guests a separate access route, which is useful because not everyone needs an Apple device.
Schlage lists the Sense Pro from $399 and says it has no keyway. That makes the pre-purchase failure plan more important than it would be with a lock that accepts a conventional key. Before installation, decide which of these will be available if the phone is unavailable or the batteries are depleted: a keypad code, Apple Home Key, another authorized user’s device, battery alerts, and the lock’s emergency-power procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTom’s Guide reported more than two months of hands-on testing in 2026. That published experience makes the Sense Pro the strongest hands-on-tested choice in this shortlist for readers specifically interested in Apple-oriented, UWB-assisted entry. It still should not be described as the most secure lock for every physical door, particularly because the lack of a keyway changes the backup-access trade-off.

Choose it if: hands-free entry and Apple Home Key matter more than having a physical keyway. Skip it if: you want the simplest possible emergency procedure or your household does not use Apple devices and will not benefit from the lock’s premium features.
Best feature-rich biometric option: Aqara Smart Lock U400
The Aqara Smart Lock U400 combines more entry methods than most locks in this guide. Its feature set includes UWB approach unlocking, Apple Home Key, Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key when connected through Samsung SmartThings, fingerprint access, passcodes, NFC cards, app control, mechanical keys, Matter-over-Thread, and integrations with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings.
Aqara says the fingerprint reader can store up to 50 fingerprints and advertises recognition accuracy of up to 98.6 percent. Both figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test findings. Fingerprint entry is convenient, but capacity and claimed accuracy do not establish that biometric access is safer or more reliable than a physical key or a well-managed code.
Recommended Free Tools
The U400 uses a rechargeable battery, supports USB-C charging and emergency charging, and is advertised for up to six months per charge. Aqara also says it is BHMA certified, has an IP65-rated outer panel, includes a gyroscope for auto-lock behavior, and is designed for single-cylinder deadbolts. The six-month figure is not directly comparable with Level’s nine-to-12-month estimate because the products use different battery systems and usage assumptions.
Aqara introduced the U400 at CES 2026 and announced availability through its website, Amazon in the United States and Canada, Apple retail channels in specified markets, Best Buy in the United States, and selected retailers. Check the current price, stock, exact regional model, phone requirements, and hub/controller compatibility immediately before buying; availability and bundle contents can change.
Choose it if: you want fingerprints, UWB, rechargeable power, and broad platform support in one lock. Skip it if: you prefer a simpler keypad-and-key design, do not want to manage a hub-dependent smart-home setup, or require independently verified biometric performance.
Best retrofit direction: August Smart Lock Pro or another August retrofit model
A retrofit lock replaces the inside portion of an existing deadbolt while leaving the exterior cylinder and physical key in place. That makes the August approach attractive to renters who have permission to install a smart lock and to homeowners who want smart control without changing the visible hardware or issuing new physical keys.
TechRadar describes the August Smart Lock Pro as compatible with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa when paired with the additional Connect adapter. It also highlights remote locking and unlocking and hands-free operation. The exact behavior depends on the model and the adapter or bridge included in the bundle, so do not assume that every August-branded lock has the same radio, app, battery, or remote-access features.
Retrofit is not automatically universal. Before ordering, confirm that the existing deadbolt is supported, that the interior assembly has enough clearance, that the door closes without forcing the bolt, and that the lock can be operated manually after installation. A retrofit may preserve your key while still failing to fit a particular deadbolt design, mortise lock, multipoint system, or unusually narrow interior space.

Mainstream keypad and ecosystem alternatives
Schlage Encode and Encode Plus
Schlage’s Encode family provides a mainstream Wi-Fi keypad comparison point and is managed through the Schlage Home app. Confirm the exact version before buying. Encode, Encode Plus, and other Encode variants should not be treated as interchangeable: Apple Home Key, Matter, wireless connectivity, and other features can differ by model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Encode is a sensible direction for buyers who want keypad access and built-in Wi-Fi rather than a separate bridge, but the specific model’s battery behavior, smart-home support, and door requirements still need to be checked on the official product page and installation documentation.
Yale Assure
Yale’s Assure materials describe app control, door-status sensing, auto-lock and unlock, guest access, activity monitoring, and integration with partner ecosystems. Yale sells multiple Assure configurations and modules, so the name alone is not enough to establish whether a particular lock supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Matter, Apple Home Key, or another platform.
Use the full model number and module information when comparing an Assure lock. This is particularly important if you are replacing an older Yale lock and expect to reuse a smart-home hub or existing access codes.
Kwikset Halo Touch
Kwikset’s Halo Touch is the fingerprint-oriented option in this comparison set. Kwikset says it can store up to 100 fingerprints for up to 50 users. That is a product-capacity specification, not evidence that fingerprint entry is more secure or dependable than a key or code.

Compatibility checklist: measure the door before buying
Many smart-lock returns happen because the buyer chose a lock by brand or feature list without checking the door. Complete these checks before comparing prices.
- Identify the lock type. Most products in this guide are intended for a single-cylinder deadbolt. Mortise locks, interconnected locks, rim cylinders, and multipoint doors require different hardware or may not be supported.
- Measure the backset. This is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore. Common measurements include 2.375 and 2.75 inches, but do not assume your door uses one of them.
- Check the bore and door thickness. Confirm the hole diameter, mounting area, and door thickness against the manufacturer’s requirements. Level, for example, lists a standard 2.125-inch bore and 1.75-to-2-inch door thickness for the Level Lock Pro.
- Inspect the deadbolt and interior clearance. Retrofit products must mate with the existing interior mechanism and have enough room to turn. Decorative trim, adjacent windows, and narrow door frames can interfere.
- Test alignment. With the door open, extend and retract the bolt. Then close the door and check whether the bolt enters the strike without rubbing or requiring the door to be pushed. Do not rely on a motor to overcome a misaligned frame.
- Check the exterior and weather exposure. A lock’s outdoor rating applies to the specified panel and conditions, not necessarily to every installation environment. Aqara’s IP65 claim, for example, is a manufacturer specification for the U400’s outer panel.
- Confirm local rules and permission. Renters may need written approval, and some apartment or condominium doors use restricted hardware that cannot be replaced casually.
Retrofit versus full deadbolt replacement
| Design | What changes | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retrofit | Usually the interior mechanism; the outside cylinder and key remain. | Preserves existing keys and exterior appearance; often less disruptive. | Limited by the existing deadbolt and interior clearance; remote features may require a bridge. |
| Full replacement | The interior and exterior deadbolt hardware are replaced. | Allows a new keypad, fingerprint reader, keyway, or purpose-built exterior design. | Requires more compatibility checks and may change how household members enter. |
Choose retrofit when preserving the existing key is the central requirement. Choose a full replacement when you need a keypad, fingerprint reader, new exterior hardware, or a lock that is designed as one integrated system. Neither design is automatically more secure; the door, strike installation, deadbolt construction, and independent physical testing matter more than the presence of an app.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, and Matter-over-Thread explained
| Connection | What it is good at | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Direct remote access and simple control away from home when the lock supports it. | It can consume more battery than lower-power radios, and internet or cloud outages can affect remote functions. |
| Bluetooth | Nearby phone control with relatively simple local operation. | Remote access generally requires a bridge or hub; Bluetooth alone does not mean you can unlock the door from anywhere. |
| Z-Wave | Integration with a compatible home-automation hub. | The lock, hub, region, and security generation must be compatible. A Z-Wave lock is not automatically a Wi-Fi lock. |
| Matter over Thread | Modern multi-platform smart-home integration over a low-power mesh network. | You still need a compatible Matter controller, and Thread-based remote access normally depends on suitable controller and border-router equipment. Matter does not eliminate setup requirements. |
Level and Aqara both document hub or controller requirements for Matter-based integration or remote access. Schlage Sense Pro also uses Matter-over-Thread, but the exact Apple, phone, operating-system, controller, and regional requirements differ. Check the lock’s current setup documentation rather than assuming that a Matter logo guarantees every feature on every platform.

Plan entry for the four common failure scenarios
A smart lock should be convenient without making the home inaccessible when one component fails. Write down the answer to each scenario before installation.
- Your phone is lost or dead: use a keypad, physical key, NFC card or fob, fingerprint, Apple Home Key on another authorized device, or a trusted guest code—whichever the specific lock supports.
- The batteries are depleted: follow the model’s emergency-power procedure, keep the required battery or power source available, and replace batteries when the first low-power alert appears. A lock without a keyway needs especially careful planning.
- Wi-Fi or the cloud is offline: expect remote app controls and some automations to fail. Test local methods such as a key, keypad, fingerprint, NFC credential, or locally configured smart-home control.
- A household member needs access: create an individual code or credential where possible, rather than sharing one permanent code. Remove access when a guest, cleaner, contractor, or former resident no longer needs it.
Do not describe any cloud-connected smart lock as fail-safe. Remote access, notifications, geofencing, and voice commands are conveniences layered on top of the mechanical lock and local entry methods.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery life is an estimate, not a promise
Battery duration changes with usage frequency, motor load, temperature, radio configuration, Wi-Fi or hub behavior, and door alignment. BHMA’s A156.33-2024 overview describes a method for verifying manufacturer battery-performance claims under different use models, which underscores why battery figures should be compared cautiously.
Level lists nine-to-12 months from one CR2 battery for the Level Lock Pro. Aqara advertises up to six months per charge for the rechargeable U400. These figures are not directly comparable: one lock uses a replaceable CR2 cell and the other uses a rechargeable battery, and the manufacturers may use different testing assumptions.
Keep the correct CR2 lithium battery or the model’s specified replacement cells available before the original battery is exhausted. Do not substitute an arbitrary battery type simply because it fits physically. For locks that use AA cells, use the manufacturer’s recommended chemistry and replace all cells as directed rather than mixing old and new batteries.
During setup, enable low-battery notifications, test the emergency charging contacts or power procedure, and confirm that the lock can still be operated manually. A battery test performed on a perfectly aligned door does not guarantee the same runtime on a door whose bolt drags against the strike.
Security grades versus independent attack testing
ANSI/BHMA credentials are useful, but they answer a different question from a lab’s attack testing. BHMA explains that certification evaluates areas including security, durability, and finish, and residential deadbolt standards include ANSI/BHMA A156.40. If a manufacturer lists a Grade 1/A rating or BHMA certification, report it as a manufacturer-listed or certification claim unless the testing scope is independently documented.
Consumer Reports’ reported laboratory work on kick-in, drilling, and picking resistance is separate evidence. A lock can have strong app support and a favorable certification while still requiring careful attention to the strike plate, long screws, door frame, and installation. Conversely, a mechanically robust deadbolt may have disappointing remote-access or battery behavior.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
When evaluating security, prioritize the full installation: a solid frame, an aligned strike, appropriate screws, a properly fitted deadbolt, and a lock whose physical test results are actually available. Do not infer burglary resistance from a touchscreen, fingerprint reader, UWB radio, or the word “smart.”

Installation and setup checklist
- Photograph the existing lock and measure the door before removing anything.
- Confirm the exact model number, regional version, included batteries, and whether a bridge or hub is included.
- Install the hardware with the door open and make sure the bolt moves freely by hand where the design allows it.
- Align the strike plate before enabling motorized locking. The bolt should not scrape or need pressure from the door.
- Pair the lock with its app and selected smart-home platform, then update firmware if the app offers an update.
- Create separate household and guest credentials. Record where codes or recovery information are stored.
- Test every intended entry method: key, keypad, Home Key, fingerprint, NFC credential, app, and emergency power as applicable.
- Close the door and test locking and unlocking repeatedly. Verify door-status sensing and auto-lock only after manual operation is reliable.
- Enable battery alerts and decide who will receive them.
- Keep the old hardware until the new lock has passed several days of normal use and all household members can enter.
Which smart lock should you buy?
- Buy Level Lock Pro if your priority is an almost conventional exterior, Apple Home Key, Matter, and premium design—and your door meets its measurements.
- Buy Schlage Sense Pro if your Apple household wants hands-free UWB-assisted entry and you accept a no-keyway design with more demanding backup planning.
- Buy Aqara U400 if you want the broadest collection of entry methods, including fingerprints, UWB, NFC, a rechargeable battery, and multi-platform integration.
- Investigate August retrofit if keeping the existing outside key cylinder is more important than having a new keypad or fingerprint reader.
- Compare Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, and Kwikset Halo Touch when you want a mainstream keypad or biometric option, but compare full model numbers rather than brand families.
Before checkout, verify the current price, stock, regional compatibility, battery type, included bridge or hub, and smart-home support. Hardware names and bundles change more quickly than door hardware, and a feature listed for one generation may not apply to another.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a smart lock work if the Wi-Fi goes out?
Many locks still support local entry through a key, keypad, fingerprint reader, NFC credential, or phone connection, depending on the model. Remote unlocking, notifications, voice control, and some automations may stop working when the internet or cloud service is unavailable. Test the local backup methods before relying on the lock.

Usually, yes, for Matter setup and reliable remote access. A compatible Matter controller and Thread border router may be required, and the exact equipment depends on the platform. Matter improves interoperability but does not remove the need for compatible hub hardware.
Is a fingerprint smart lock safer than one with a keypad?
Not automatically. Fingerprint access can be convenient, but a manufacturer’s fingerprint-capacity or accuracy figure is not proof of superior security. Physical deadbolt construction, the door frame, installation, credential management, and independent attack testing matter more.
Are retrofit smart locks suitable for renters?
They can be, because they often preserve the exterior cylinder and existing key. However, renters should obtain permission first and confirm that the existing deadbolt, interior clearance, alignment, and building rules support the specific retrofit model.
What should I do when a smart lock battery dies?
Use the model’s documented emergency-power method or its physical key if it has one. Keep the correct replacement battery or power source available, enable low-battery alerts, and replace batteries before the lock reaches a critical level. A no-keyway lock requires particularly careful emergency planning.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose the Level Lock Pro for discreet Apple/Matter-focused installation, the Schlage Sense Pro for premium hands-free Apple entry, the Aqara U400 for fingerprint and UWB features, or an August retrofit model when preserving your existing key matters most. Whichever lock you choose, verify the door measurements first and test a non-cloud backup entry method before trusting it with everyday access.
