For a new phone, the iPhone 17e is the shortest conventional option. The Samsung Galaxy S26 is the best compact Android flagship, while the Google Pixel 10a offers the strongest value. If pocket volume matters more than slab-phone dimensions, the folding Galaxy Z Flip8 is a different but useful alternative.

Best overall compact phone: Samsung Galaxy S26
The Samsung Galaxy S26 is the best all-around small Android phone. Its 149.6 × 71.7 × 7.2 mm body and 167g weight make it easy to handle, but it still includes features that are often removed from smaller models: a high-refresh display, flagship performance and a dedicated telephoto camera.
The 6.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel adjusts from 1Hz to 120Hz. Around the back are a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP 3x telephoto. Samsung offers 256GB and 512GB versions, and the US starting price is $899.99. It launched with Android 16 and One UI 8.5, with seven years of security updates promised for the S26 series.

The main limitation is that “compact” describes the body, not the screen. The S26 still has a modern 6.3-inch display, and its 4,300mAh battery is not especially large. It is also considerably more expensive than the Pixel 10a or iPhone 17e.
Best for the smallest new phone: Apple iPhone 17e
If the fewest millimeters matter most, buy the iPhone 17e. At 146.7 mm tall, 71.5 mm wide and 169g, it is the shortest and lightest conventional phone in this group. It has a 6.1-inch OLED display, Apple’s A19 processor, 256GB or 512GB of storage, IP68-rated resistance and a $599 starting price.
The 17e is fast enough for demanding apps and games, and its 256GB base storage is generous. Apple also provides a 2x optical-quality crop from the 48MP Fusion rear camera. However, that is still one rear camera: there is no dedicated ultrawide or telephoto lens.
The display is another important compromise. It runs at 60Hz, not 120Hz, so scrolling will look less fluid than on the iPhone 17 or Galaxy S26. US models are eSIM-only and do not accept a physical SIM card. The box includes a USB-C cable but not a power adapter.
Apple’s IP68 rating is not a promise that the phone is waterproof. Water resistance can decline as a phone ages, and liquid damage is not covered under Apple’s warranty.
Best small Android value: Google Pixel 10a
The Google Pixel 10a is the sensible choice when price and long-term software support matter more than maximum performance. It starts at $499 and includes a 6.3-inch Actua OLED display, 48MP main and 13MP ultrawide cameras, a 5,100mAh battery, wireless charging and IP68 protection.
Google promises seven years of Android updates, security updates and Pixel Drops. The clean Android interface and Google’s camera processing are also strong reasons to choose it over a similarly priced budget phone.
There are two things to understand about its size. The Pixel 10a is light at 6.5 ounces, but Google lists it at about 155 × 74 × 10 mm. It is therefore not physically smaller than the iPhone 17e or Galaxy S26; its compact appeal comes mainly from its relatively manageable weight and narrow-enough design. Its 6.3-inch display is also not small by older standards.

Best compact Android camera phone: Google Pixel 10
The Google Pixel 10 is the better pick for photography, especially if you want useful zoom in a relatively compact phone. Its camera system combines a 48MP main camera, 13MP ultrawide and 10.8MP 5x telephoto. Google’s image processing makes it particularly appealing for point-and-shoot photography.
It uses the Tensor G5 processor, has 12GB of RAM, supports Qi2-based Pixelsnap wireless charging and receives seven years of updates. The phone has a 6.3-inch 60–120Hz OLED display and measures approximately 152 × 71 × 8 mm, weighing 7.2 ounces.
The regular price is $799 MSRP for 128GB or 256GB, although promotions may reduce it temporarily. That makes the Pixel 10 much more expensive than the 10a, whose two biggest omissions are the newer processor and telephoto camera. Choose the Pixel 10 when those features justify the difference rather than assuming every sale price is permanent.
Best small iPhone for display quality: iPhone 17
The iPhone 17 is only slightly larger than the 17e, but it addresses the cheaper model’s biggest weaknesses. It measures 149.6 × 71.5 × 7.95 mm and weighs 177g. Its 6.3-inch OLED display supports ProMotion up to 120Hz and has an Always-On mode.
It also adds a dual 48MP rear-camera system, including an ultrawide camera, while retaining the A19 processor and starting with 256GB of storage. The starting price is $799, or $200 more than the iPhone 17e.
Buy it if you notice display smoothness, use an ultrawide lens regularly or want a more capable camera system. Buy the 17e instead if the smallest body and lowest price are more important. The US iPhone 17 also uses eSIM rather than a physical SIM.
Best pocketable large-screen phone: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8
The Galaxy Z Flip8 solves a different problem. It is not a small-screen phone: its cover display measures 4.1 inches, while opening the device reveals a 6.9-inch internal display. Its advantage is that it folds into a much shorter shape for a pocket.

Do not treat it as a conventional compact phone. Folded, it is thicker; unfolded, it is a large phone. It also has an IP48 rating rather than the IP68 protection found on several conventional models, and the hinge, flexible display and crease introduce durability concerns. Choose it when pocket volume is the priority, not when you want the smallest usable screen.

What to check before buying a small phone
- Compare body dimensions, not screen size alone. A 6.3-inch phone with narrow bezels can be easier to hold than an older phone with a smaller display and thick borders. Height and width have more effect on one-handed use than diagonal screen measurements.
- Decide whether 60Hz is acceptable. The iPhone 17e is compact and fast, but its 60Hz display does not scroll as smoothly as the 120Hz panels on the iPhone 17 and Galaxy S26.
- Check camera lenses. A high megapixel count does not create a telephoto camera. The Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10 include dedicated zoom hardware; the iPhone 17e and Pixel 10a do not.
- Budget for the charger. The iPhone 17e does not include a power adapter, and Google sells the 45W USB-C PPS charger recommended for the Pixel 10a separately.
- Confirm SIM and carrier compatibility. US iPhone 17-series models use eSIM. Imported compact phones may lack the right US cellular bands, carrier certification or regional warranty. Check the exact model number before ordering.
- Do not confuse water resistance with waterproofing. IP ratings come from controlled tests. They do not guarantee protection after drops, repairs, aging seals or exposure to every type of liquid.
Should you buy an older iPhone 13 mini?
The iPhone 13 mini remains smaller than every current mainstream recommendation, but it is a 2021 phone and is no longer in Apple’s current lineup. It can make sense as a used or refurbished purchase when its price is low enough.
Before buying one, check the battery-health percentage, repair history, Activation Lock status, carrier lock, storage capacity and return policy. A very small phone with a worn battery may be less useful than a newer model that is a few millimeters larger.

What about the Galaxy S25?
The Galaxy S25 is still worth considering if it is heavily discounted. It measures 146.9 × 70.5 × 7.2 mm and weighs 162g, making it slightly smaller and lighter than the Galaxy S26. However, the S26 is Samsung’s current base flagship in 2026, with a newer processor, newer software and a 6.3-inch display.
Choose the S25 only when its street price is substantially below the S26 and you are comfortable buying the previous generation. At similar prices, the S26 is the more logical purchase.
Common small-phone claims that are now wrong
- “The iPhone 17e has a 120Hz display.” It has a 60Hz display.
- “The Pixel 10a uses the newest Tensor chip.” It uses Tensor G4; the Pixel 10 uses Tensor G5.
- “The Galaxy S25 is Samsung’s current compact flagship.” The Galaxy S26 replaced it as the current base S-series model.
- “A 6.3-inch phone is genuinely small.” It is compact next to 6.7- and 6.9-inch phones, but it is not small in the iPhone mini sense.
- “IP68 means waterproof.” It indicates resistance under defined test conditions, not permanent immunity from liquid damage.
- “Any imported compact phone will work in the US.” Bands, eSIM support, carrier approval, software regions and warranty coverage vary by model.
