The best webhook infrastructure depends on which direction your events travel. Use Hookdeck Event Gateway to receive provider webhooks, buffer them, transform and filter payloads, control rates, retry failures, replay events and debug delivery. Use Svix Dispatch when your SaaS must send reliable, signed webhooks to many customers through a self-service portal. Hookdeck Outpost adds outbound delivery with managed and self-hosted paths; Convoy is a self-hosted bidirectional gateway; Hook0 targets simpler EU-hosted or on-premise deployments; and Nango fits products that need a broad third-party integration catalog with polling fallback.
Choosing correctly means separating inbound receipt from outbound customer delivery, then comparing reliability controls, tenant isolation, security, compliance, deployment, data residency and total cost at your event volume. The guide below maps each tool to the operational problem it solves and shows where combining products is more sensible than forcing one gateway to do everything.
What is webhook infrastructure, and why does direction matter?
Webhook infrastructure is the layer between an event producer and the code that ultimately processes or receives that event. It accepts HTTP requests, authenticates them, stores them durably, applies routing or transformation rules, delivers them to one or more destinations, retries transient failures and exposes logs for investigation.

There are two materially different jobs:
- Inbound provider events: Stripe, Shopify, GitHub, Twilio or another external system calls your application. Your priority is absorbing bursts safely, preserving the original event, acknowledging quickly, and giving developers tools to filter, transform, replay and diagnose requests before business logic runs.
- Outbound customer webhooks: your SaaS publishes events to endpoints owned by your customers. You need tenant isolation, endpoint self-service, signed payloads, per-customer retry policy, delivery history, rate limits and controls that prevent one customer from affecting another.
A gateway can technically perform both jobs, but the data model, security boundaries and support workflow are different. Start by deciding whether you are receiving, sending or doing both; then evaluate products against that direction.

Is Svix the best choice for outbound customer webhooks?
For a polished, multi-tenant customer webhook product, Svix is the strongest fit in this group. Its Dispatch platform is built around letting your customers create and manage endpoints while your application publishes events through a controlled delivery layer.
What Svix provides
- Customer-facing application portals for endpoint setup and delivery history.
- Signed payloads, retries, event filtering, transformations and throttling.
- Multi-tenancy and observability designed for separating customer traffic and support investigations.
- Multi-region delivery and advanced destinations, including polling, FIFO, object storage, message brokers and databases.
- A specification-led signing and interoperability approach; Svix says it led the Standard Webhooks specification.
This feature set matters when “send an HTTP POST” is not enough. A customer needs to rotate an endpoint, inspect a failed attempt, replay a message and verify authenticity without opening a support ticket. Your operations team needs to identify whether a failure belongs to one tenant, one destination or the entire event pipeline.
Pricing and service levels
Svix lists Free, Basic, Professional and Enterprise plans. Its 2026 pricing page lists Professional from $490 per month; the Professional trial lasts 30 days and includes 50,000 messages. Published uptime SLAs are 99.9% for Basic, 99.99% for Professional and 99.999% for Enterprise. Treat these as the terms shown on that pricing page and confirm current limits, overages and contract language before purchase: Svix pricing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSvix’s own FAQ summarizes its buying rationale as: “We created Svix because we believe that when it comes to webhooks, buying is much preferable to building.” That proposition is most compelling when your team would otherwise have to build tenant controls, a portal, signing, retries, delivery analytics and support tooling.
When Svix is not the first choice
If your immediate problem is safely ingesting provider callbacks into an existing application, Svix’s outbound orientation may leave you paying for capabilities you do not yet need. If self-hosting is mandatory, examine the deployment and compliance terms carefully rather than assuming a managed-first product meets that requirement.
Is Hookdeck Event Gateway best for receiving provider webhooks?
Hookdeck Event Gateway is the clearest fit when inbound receipt, buffering and debugging are the bottleneck. It receives, routes, transforms and delivers events while keeping an operational record that developers can inspect from development through production: Hookdeck Basics.
Inbound controls that reduce failure impact
- Buffering and asynchronous handling: acknowledge a provider quickly while downstream work proceeds through a managed delivery path.
- Filtering and transformation: use payload and header filters or JavaScript transformations to shape events before they reach a destination.
- Rate control: set per-destination delivery rates so a burst or slow consumer does not overwhelm application code.
- Retries and replay: trigger manual or automatic retries, bookmark useful requests and replay an event after fixing a handler.
- Observability: inspect delivery attempts, metrics and issue notifications instead of reconstructing a timeline from scattered application logs.
The documentation also covers localhost forwarding, third-party routing, asynchronous API-gateway use, delivery groups, deduplication and Terraform. An account-free Console can inspect test requests, which is useful when a provider integration is still being wired up: Hookdeck documentation.

Scale claim and its qualification
Hookdeck’s product page advertises 150B+ webhooks processed and 7.5K+ distinct webhook sources. Those are vendor-reported marketing figures, not an independent industry benchmark: Hookdeck product page.
Typical inbound flow
- Give the provider a Hookdeck endpoint rather than your business-logic URL.
- Verify the provider signature and preserve the original headers and body in the gateway workflow.
- Apply filters or a JavaScript transformation only when you have defined how to recover the original payload.
- Deliver to a queue, API gateway or application endpoint at a rate your consumer can sustain.
- Use delivery metrics, retries and replay to resolve failures, then make your application handler idempotent before turning on automatic recovery.
When should you choose Hookdeck Outpost for outbound delivery?
Choose Outpost when outbound cost, destination variety or a future self-hosting path matters more than the broadest enterprise feature set. Hookdeck separates Outpost from Event Gateway: Event Gateway is positioned for receiving webhooks, while Outpost sends events to your customers or downstream systems.
Hookdeck’s provider comparison reports $10 per million events with the first 50,000 events free. The figures come from that comparison and should be rechecked before signing a contract: Hookdeck provider comparison.
Outpost can deliver to HTTP endpoints as well as queues and streams. The same comparison describes an Apache 2.0 self-hosted build that shares the managed codebase. That gives an architecture team a way to begin with a hosted service and retain a path to operating the component themselves, but self-hosting still transfers upgrades, capacity planning, incident response and security patching to your team.
Is Convoy the right self-hosted bidirectional gateway?
Convoy is the strongest candidate when one gateway must handle inbound and outbound webhooks and your organization accepts operational ownership. The provider comparison describes it as bidirectional and strongest for self-hosting, with a Community edition and an Elastic License 2.0 in place since August 2024.
Licensing and feature boundaries
Convoy’s comparison lists role-based access control, white-labeling and JavaScript transformations as Premium features, with a reported price of $999 per month. Delivery is described as HTTP only. Confirm the current edition, license scope and pricing directly before embedding Convoy in a commercial product, especially if you need to modify or redistribute the gateway.
Convoy makes sense when data must remain in your infrastructure, a single control plane simplifies operations, and your team can run databases, workers, queues, monitoring and upgrades. It is less attractive if you want a turnkey customer portal, many destination types or a vendor-managed SLA without building the surrounding operational discipline yourself.

When is Hook0 a better fit than a larger platform?
Hook0 is worth considering when deployment location is the deciding constraint and the workflow is relatively simple. The provider comparison characterizes it as a smaller EU-hosted service with an on-premise option: Hookdeck provider comparison.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That positioning can help teams with EU data-residency requirements or procurement rules that favor an on-premise deployment. The trade-off is breadth: the comparison does not establish the same portal, destination, transformation or enterprise feature coverage documented for Svix or Hookdeck. Ask for a current capability matrix, regional processing details, retention policy and support commitments before choosing it for a high-volume customer-facing product.
Where does Nango fit in a webhook architecture?
Nango fits when webhooks are one part of a large third-party integration catalog, not when you only need a standalone delivery layer. Its 2026 comparison describes provider-specific subscription functions, connection attribution and polling fallback for receiving third-party API webhooks: Nango comparison.
Polling fallback matters because providers differ in event coverage, delivery guarantees and subscription APIs. A connection-aware integration layer can reconcile missed or unsupported events by polling the provider, while a dedicated gateway concentrates on transport reliability. Select Nango when the integration catalog, authentication and reconciliation model are central product capabilities; select Hookdeck when transport-level buffering, replay and debugging are the immediate need.

How should you evaluate reliability, security and operations?
Do not compare feature checklists without modeling a failed delivery. Walk one event through ingestion, storage, transformation, retry, replay and final acknowledgment, then answer these questions.
Reliability controls
- Is the event durably queued before the gateway acknowledges the producer?
- Can you configure retry timing and exponential backoff, and distinguish transient HTTP failures from permanent validation errors?
- Can an operator replay one event, a filtered group or an entire outage window without duplicating successful deliveries?
- Is deduplication available, and does your application still enforce idempotency using a provider event identifier?
- Can you cap delivery rates per destination or tenant?
Security and compliance
- How are signatures generated, verified and rotated, and can each tenant have an independent secret?
- Do you need mutual TLS, OAuth or another destination-specific authentication method?
- Are payloads and headers encrypted in transit and at rest, and can sensitive fields be redacted from logs?
- Can administrators audit endpoint changes, replays, secret access and delivery overrides?
- Which attestations or contractual terms are required, such as SOC 2, HIPAA or PCI DSS?
Tenant isolation and support
For outbound delivery, test whether queues, rate limits, retry workers, signing keys and observability are isolated per customer. A shared worker pool that lets one noisy tenant delay everyone else is a design defect even if the vendor advertises retries. Confirm whether your support staff can inspect a tenant’s failure without seeing another customer’s payload.
Deployment and data residency
Managed SaaS reduces operational work but may constrain region selection, retention or network topology. Self-hosting provides control over location and access, but your team owns upgrades, scaling, backups, incident response and vulnerability remediation. Obtain a written answer for where payloads, logs, backups and replay copies are stored; “hosted in Europe” does not automatically describe every processing or backup location.

Should you combine Hookdeck and Svix?
Yes, combining them is often cleaner than making one product own both directions. Put Hookdeck Event Gateway at the edge for provider callbacks, normalize and deduplicate events there, then publish an internal event to your application. When your application emits a customer-facing event, send it through Svix for tenant-aware signing, portal management, retries and delivery history.
This split keeps inbound provider quirks away from your public webhook contract. It also lets you replace one layer independently: an integration team can change provider routing without changing customer endpoint behavior, while a product team can evolve its outbound portal without rewriting every inbound connector.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you choose a tool step by step?
- Map event directions. Count inbound provider sources, outbound customer tenants and any internal queue or database destinations separately.
- Define the failure contract. Write down acknowledgment timing, retryable status codes, maximum retry window, replay permissions, deduplication behavior and ordering requirements.
- List destination protocols. Record whether you need HTTP only, queues, streams, object storage, databases, FIFO or polling. Svix and Outpost document broader destination options than Convoy’s HTTP-only description.
- Set security and residency gates. Eliminate products that cannot meet signing, secret rotation, mTLS/OAuth, audit, regional or on-premise requirements.
- Model tenant isolation. Test separate credentials, quotas, retry workers, logs and portal access for at least two simulated customers.
- Calculate total cost. Use expected events, fan-out destinations, retention, peak throughput, support staffing and self-hosting infrastructure—not just the headline per-event rate.
- Run an outage exercise. Stop a destination, generate a burst, restore it, replay selected failures and verify that successful events are not duplicated beyond your application’s idempotency design.
- Choose managed versus self-hosted deliberately. Document who patches the system, owns backups, monitors queues and answers a customer during a regional incident.
What are the most common implementation mistakes?
Acknowledging before durable capture
Returning a success response before the event is safely stored can create an unrecoverable gap. Route the provider request through a durable gateway or queue first, and monitor the handoff.
Assuming retries make handlers safe
Retries intentionally deliver the same event more than once. Store a processed-event key or equivalent idempotency record in your application and make side effects conditional on that record.
Transforming away evidence
A normalized payload is convenient, but support teams still need the original body and headers to verify signatures and explain provider behavior. Keep the original event under an appropriate retention and access policy.
Treating all failures as retryable
A timeout or 503 may recover; a malformed payload or revoked credential usually needs an operator. Separate transient transport errors from permanent application errors and alert on the latter instead of retrying indefinitely.

Ignoring burst and fan-out math
One inbound event can fan out to many customer endpoints. Calculate peak concurrent deliveries, per-tenant quotas and downstream connection limits before production, not after a large customer import.
Skipping signature and secret-rotation tests
Verify signatures against the raw request body, test clock-skew handling if your scheme uses timestamps, and rehearse rotating a secret without dropping events. Keep old and new credentials only for the documented overlap period, then revoke the old one.
Buying on price alone
A low event rate can become expensive when every event fans out to several destinations, is retained for replay and requires dedicated support. Compare included messages, overage rules, throughput caps, regional fees and the labor cost of self-hosting.

- Choose Hookdeck Event Gateway for inbound Stripe, Shopify, GitHub, Twilio or similar provider events that need buffering, transformation, rate control, replay and fast diagnosis.
- Choose Hookdeck Outpost when outbound economics, queues or streams, and a managed-to-self-hosted path are priorities.
- Choose Convoy when one self-hosted gateway must cover both inbound and outbound traffic and your team accepts open-core licensing and operational responsibility.
- Choose Hook0 when EU hosting or on-premise deployment outranks feature breadth.
- Choose Nango when webhook subscriptions, provider authentication and polling reconciliation belong inside a broad integration catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one SaaS use different webhook providers for different regions?
Yes, but keep the public event contract and signing rules consistent. Route by region only after confirming where payloads, logs, backups and replay copies are processed, and make failover behavior explicit so a regional switch does not deliver an event twice.
Do webhook gateways eliminate the need for an internal queue?
Not necessarily. A gateway can buffer and retry delivery, while an internal queue may still be the right boundary for long-running business jobs, transaction coupling or independent consumer scaling. Treat the gateway as transport infrastructure, not as a substitute for every application messaging pattern.
How can I migrate from a home-built webhook worker without dropping events?
Run the new gateway in parallel, mirror a controlled sample, and compare event IDs, signatures, response codes and retry behavior before changing the provider callback URL. Keep the old consumer able to drain already accepted events, then switch traffic during a monitored window and retain a rollback route.
What should a webhook status page expose to customers?
Show endpoint state, recent attempts, response codes, next retry time and a safe event identifier without exposing secrets or unrelated tenants. Provide a documented way to rotate credentials and pause an endpoint, and distinguish an endpoint configuration error from a platform-wide incident.
