Prepare the build surface, watch the first layer, manage filament moisture, and change one setting at a time. This workflow helps you produce repeatable results and narrow down common failures without assuming that one material or setting suits every machine.
1. Define what the part needs to do
Before choosing filament or adjusting a slicer profile, write down the part’s requirements. Consider dimensions and fit, expected loads, temperature or chemical exposure, flexibility, appearance, and whether the part is a prototype or a functional component. These requirements determine which material and print orientation make sense.
Do not assume a material name alone guarantees a particular strength or service life. Results depend on the specific part, its geometry, print conditions, and how loads act on the layers. Validate a functional part in its intended application rather than relying on an unverified strength figure.
2. Choose a material your printer can handle
Compare candidate materials against the part’s mechanical and environmental needs as well as your printer’s capabilities. No filament is universally best. The nozzle, heated bed, enclosure, build surface, cooling setup, and part geometry all affect whether a material is a practical choice.

Use the recommendations for your particular printer and filament. Prusa Research’s Filament Material Guide lists different temperature ranges for materials including PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, and nylon in its own printer context. UltiMaker likewise describes its material settings as general guidance and advises checking manufacturer recommendations in its material overview. Treat a published temperature range as a starting point for the specified context, not a guarantee that another printer can use it.
- Part requirements: Match mechanical, environmental, flexibility, and appearance needs.
- Printer capability: Check nozzle, bed, enclosure, and build-surface requirements.
- Print profile: Confirm recommended temperatures, cooling, and speed for the material.
- Handling: Account for storage and drying needs, which vary by filament.
- Validation: Test fit and performance on the printer and material intended for the final part.
3. Prepare the printer and build surface
Check that the build sheet is clean and undamaged, and follow the printer maker’s maintenance instructions. Cleaning methods depend on the surface coating: Prusa Research’s first-layer guidance gives 90% isopropyl alcohol as an option for ABS, PLA, and many other materials, but that is not a blanket instruction for every build surface. Follow the care instructions for your specific sheet.

Also start from the printer maker’s recommended maintenance and material profile. If extrusion is missing or inconsistent, a clog is one possible cause; use the troubleshooting and maintenance procedure for the exact printer model. Clog-clearing steps and temperatures are not universal.
4. Start with the recommended profile and change one setting at a time
Use the recommended printer-and-filament profile as your baseline. It should account for settings such as nozzle and bed temperature, cooling, and speed. If a print needs adjustment, change one variable at a time and record what you changed and what happened. Multiple simultaneous changes make it harder to identify the cause of an improvement or failure.

There is no single temperature, fan setting, or speed that works across all FDM printers and materials. If you compare settings, keep the printer, filament, model, and other conditions consistent so the result is useful for your setup.
5. Inspect the first layer before letting the print run
The first layer is an early checkpoint: if it does not adhere consistently, the rest of the print may be compromised. Watch the initial lines and check that they are even and attached to the surface. If adhesion is poor, begin with the surface condition and the material’s recommended temperatures rather than immediately making a large adjustment to Z compensation.

Prusa Research warns that setting live Z too low can damage its steel sheet. Its model-specific guidance also suggests reducing speed for the first layers and, for experimental materials that adhere poorly, trying a 5–10 °C bed-temperature increase. Treat those as Prusa’s context-specific troubleshooting suggestions, not universal settings for other printers or build sheets.
6. Store and dry filament according to its material
Moisture can affect extrusion and print quality. Prusa Research’s drying guide states that “The materials used for FFF 3D printing are mostly hygroscopic.” Depending on the material and conditions, moisture may contribute to poor surface quality, low layer adhesion, blobs, bubbling, or smoke. Some polymers are naturally more prone to stringing, so compare symptoms with the material guidance and, where practical, a known-good spool before treating stringing alone as proof of moisture.

Keep spools in a closed space with desiccant; a dry box or a vacuum bag with desiccant can help limit exposure. Give extra attention to more moisture-sensitive materials, including polyamide and some support and flexible filaments. When drying is needed, follow that filament’s instructions and check that the dryer can reach the required conditions. Prusa cautions that home ovens may have inaccurate temperature control and may not safely reach the low temperatures some filaments need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Orient and validate the model for FFF
Orientation affects how a part bears loads, where supports are needed, surface quality, print time, and material use. Consider the direction of expected loads relative to layer lines, as well as overhangs, large flat areas, clearances, and tolerances. UltiMaker’s FFF design guide covers designing for the process; printer-specific test prints are still important when a fit is dimension-critical.
For design alternatives, compare the load direction, orientation, support requirements, desired surface, dimensional tolerance, print time, and material use. Test the chosen design on the intended printer and material before relying on a tight fit or functional performance.
8. Troubleshoot by symptom
Use a symptom to choose what to inspect first, not to assume a single cause. The checks below reflect the cited manufacturers’ guidance; the right adjustment still depends on your printer, material, and surface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Symptom | Initial checks | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| First layer will not stick | Inspect the surface; confirm the recommended material temperature; check first-layer speed. | Excessively low live Z can damage a Prusa steel sheet. Use cleaning methods compatible with your build surface. |
| Poor surface, blobs, bubbling, or smoke | Consider spool storage and moisture exposure; compare with material guidance or a known-good spool. | Some polymers are naturally stringier. Symptoms alone do not establish moisture as the cause. |
| Layers split or crack | Check the profile temperature and cooling, drafts, material-specific enclosure needs, moisture, and part orientation. | Do not assume a particular fan setting or material substitution applies to every printer. |
| Missing or inconsistent extrusion | Consider a clog and consult maintenance instructions for the exact printer model. | Clearing procedures and temperatures are model-specific; there is no universal method. |
When layers separate
Layer separation can be associated with a mismatched profile, excessive cooling, drafts, moisture, or the way the part is oriented. Prusa Research’s layer-separation guide describes material-specific mitigations. For example, controlling drafts is relevant to ABS, while PETG may be worth considering for some large parts. Neither suggestion is a universal fix; first check the material’s requirements and your printer’s setup.
Quick Recap
A practical print checklist
- Define the part: Record fit, load, exposure, flexibility, and appearance requirements.
- Match material to printer: Check the printer and filament makers’ recommendations, including hardware and enclosure needs.
- Prepare the machine: Inspect and clean the build surface using a method compatible with its coating; follow model-specific maintenance guidance.
- Load the recommended profile: Start with its temperature, cooling, and speed settings.
- Check the first layer: Look for consistent lines and adhesion before leaving the print unattended.
- Manage filament moisture: Store spools closed with desiccant and dry only according to the material’s instructions and the dryer’s capability.
- Orient and test: Account for loads, supports, tolerances, and surface needs, then validate the part on the intended setup.
- Keep troubleshooting interpretable: Change one setting at a time and note the result.
