Grand Theft Auto V is the best overall choice if you want the largest documented catalog of licensed music in an open-world game: 240 licensed songs across 15 music stations, plus two talk channels. Cyberpunk 2077 is the better pick for a tightly curated, setting-specific soundtrack and an official streaming-friendly control. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remains a strong historical choice with more than 150 licensed tracks, while Grand Theft Auto VI belongs on a watchlist until its announced release.
Quick verdict
| Game | Documented music scope | Radio structure | Best for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | 240 licensed songs | 15 music stations and two talk channels | The broadest, deepest licensed-radio catalog | Rockstar Games title information reported by GameSpot in 2013; catalogs can vary by platform, edition and region |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | More than 150 songs | PC Gamer counted 11 stations at launch; three additional stations were announced for Update 2.0 | Immersive, genre-spanning radio built around Night City | Station availability depends on game version; the developer provides a “Disable Copyrighted Music” option for creators |
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | More than 150 licensed tracks | 11 stations | A classic, genre-spanning soundtrack with a strong period identity | The cited count comes from an encyclopedic secondary source rather than a first-party soundtrack announcement |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | 34 original tracks announced for the album | Official preview includes multiple music styles | Following the next major evolution of in-world radio | Unreleased; Rockstar’s page says “Coming November 19,” so it is not a currently playable recommendation |
If your priority is the biggest verified licensed collection, start with Grand Theft Auto V. If you stream gameplay, Cyberpunk 2077 has the clearest documented control for copyrighted music. If you want a landmark older soundtrack, choose San Andreas.
Why licensed radio matters in an open-world game
Radio is more than background audio in a large sandbox. It gives long drives, exploration and repetitive travel a changing rhythm without requiring the player to open a menu. A licensed song can also establish a time period, location or social atmosphere immediately: a station’s presenter, commercials and music together make the fictional world feel like a functioning place.
The strongest examples use stations as part of the setting rather than as a random playlist. Rockstar soundtrack supervisor Ivan Pavlovich described the goal for Grand Theft Auto V this way: “For this game, which is set in our version of modern-day Los Angeles, what was important for us was to capture that feeling of LA and California.” That explains why station identity matters as much as raw song count.
#1 Best Overall
Licensing also creates practical limits. A track that appears in one release may be removed or replaced later if rights expire. Regional catalogs can differ, and a remaster or re-release may not contain exactly the same music as an original version. For that reason, the numbers below are documented snapshots, not guarantees that every platform edition has an identical playlist.
1. Grand Theft Auto V: the best overall licensed-radio package
What the documented catalog includes
Grand Theft Auto V has the strongest documented scale in this group: GameSpot reported 240 licensed songs in 2013. They are distributed across 15 music radio stations, with two additional talk channels. Counting the talk channels separately is important: they add personality and world-building, but they are not additional music stations.
The result is variety without requiring one giant undifferentiated playlist. A player can switch from a station built around a particular musical identity to talk programming, then return to music when the mood changes. That makes the radio useful during missions, free-roam driving and casual exploration.
Why it fits Los Angeles and California
Rockstar’s stated aim was to capture its version of modern-day Los Angeles and California. The stations therefore work as environmental storytelling: the music helps distinguish the city’s neighborhoods, wealth levels, subcultures and highway travel. Even when the player is doing nothing more than crossing the map, the station choice reinforces where the game is set.
The two talk channels are part of that illusion. They provide spoken programming rather than simply extending the licensed-song total, so players who want a radio experience that sounds like a complete broadcast system have more than a music-only playlist.

Who should choose it
- Choose GTA V when the size of the licensed catalog is your main criterion.
- Choose it when you want both music and talk programming during long drives.
- Choose it when a Los Angeles-and-California setting is more appealing than a futuristic or historical one.
Check the exact platform and edition before buying or reinstalling. Older releases and regional versions can be affected by licensing changes, so a soundtrack list published for the 2013 release should not automatically be treated as a promise for every current version.
2. Cyberpunk 2077: the best curated radio for a fictional future
Documented scale and station design
CD PROJEKT RED stated that Cyberpunk 2077 includes more than 150 songs. PC Gamer counted 11 radio stations in 2020, covering jazz, metal, pop, hip-hop, techno, Latin, rock and electronic music. The stations are designed to sound native to Night City, a dystopian setting where music, advertising and corporate power are tightly interwoven.

Because the launch count and the later additions refer to different versions, do not present “11” as the complete current total or automatically add the figures without checking the edition and update installed.
How the soundtrack serves Night City
The game treats radio as part of the city’s social texture. Genre changes are not merely a convenience for the player; they help communicate the contrast between clubs, industrial districts, corporate spaces and street-level communities. P.T. Adamczyk, senior composer at CD PROJEKT RED, explained the broader design principle: “We use more than just visual design and story to create the mood of our games; we also put an emphasis on music. Everything has to work together to create one coherent image.”
That coherence is the reason to choose Cyberpunk 2077 even if your only metric is not the highest documented song count. Its radio is curated around a specific fictional culture, rather than being a broad retrospective of a real city.

The streaming control
Cyberpunk 2077 has an official “Disable Copyrighted Music” toggle. It is intended for creators who need to reduce the risk of demonetization, muted videos or takedowns when broadcasting gameplay. Enabling it changes the audio behavior so that copyrighted tracks are not used in the normal way.
Use the setting before recording or going live, then verify the result in a short test capture. Platform policies can change, and disabling in-game copyrighted music does not automatically clear every other audio element in a broadcast. Treat the toggle as a practical risk-reduction feature, not as legal permission to use any soundtrack without checking the rules of your streaming service.
Who should choose it
- Choose Cyberpunk 2077 when atmosphere and setting-specific curation matter more than the largest raw count.
- Choose it if you want a broad mix of jazz, metal, pop, hip-hop, techno, Latin, rock and electronic music in one fictional city.
- Choose it for the clearest documented in-game control aimed at streamers and video creators.
3. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: the classic historical alternative
What is established about its soundtrack
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is described as having more than 150 licensed tracks across 11 stations. That makes it comparable in broad scale to Cyberpunk 2077, although the cited figure comes from an encyclopedic secondary source rather than the stronger first-party or specialist reporting available for the newer games.
The game’s radio is inseparable from its period setting. Stations provide a genre-spanning snapshot of the world represented by the game, and the act of switching stations becomes part of moving through that world. For many players, this historical identity is the attraction: the soundtrack feels like a time capsule rather than a contemporary playlist.
Why it still belongs on the list
Modern open-world games often compete on scale, but San Andreas demonstrates why station personality can outlast hardware generations. Its 11-station structure gives the soundtrack clear lanes, while the variety keeps long journeys from feeling musically repetitive. The game is a good choice when you want a classic Rockstar radio format and do not need the newest production features.

Edition and rights cautions
Older games require extra care when you compare soundtrack lists. Re-releases, mobile editions, regional versions and later updates can differ from the original product, and music rights may change over time. Confirm the specific edition and platform you intend to play rather than assuming that a list for the 2004 release describes every current copy.
4. Grand Theft Auto VI: an unreleased watchlist entry
What Rockstar has previewed
Rockstar’s current page previews stations ranging from modern Latin and classic country to African music, metal, pop and regional rap. It also states that the album has 34 original tracks. Those original tracks are not the same thing as 34 licensed songs, so they should not be added to the licensed totals for GTA V, Cyberpunk 2077 or San Andreas.
Why it cannot be ranked as a playable winner yet
The official page says “Coming November 19.” Until the game is released, the final station count, licensed-song total, regional availability and edition differences are not established. The preview is useful for identifying the musical direction, but it is not evidence that the finished game currently exists as a playable radio experience.
Keep GTA VI on a watchlist if you are interested in how Rockstar expands its radio format. Revisit the comparison after launch, when the complete station lineup and licensing details can be checked against the version available in your region.

Which open-world game has the biggest documented licensed soundtrack?
Grand Theft Auto V leads this group with 240 licensed songs reported in 2013. Cyberpunk 2077 follows with more than 150 songs, and San Andreas is also described as having more than 150 licensed tracks. Because those figures use different wording and source types, treat the ranking as a comparison of documented claims, not a laboratory measurement of identical editions.

Which game has the most radio stations?
Grand Theft Auto V has 15 music stations and two talk channels in the cited 2013 reporting. San Andreas has 11 stations in the cited secondary reference. Cyberpunk 2077 had 11 stations in PC Gamer’s 2020 count, with GROWL FM, DARKSTAR RADIO and IMPULSE RADIO announced later for Update 2.0. The categories are not perfectly identical because one source counts talk channels separately and the games received different post-launch content.
Which radio system is most tied to its setting?
Both leading choices are strongly setting-driven, but they do it differently. GTA V uses stations to evoke a fictional Los Angeles and California. Cyberpunk 2077 uses them to make Night City’s dystopian culture feel coherent across visual design, story and sound. Choose the former for a recognizable real-world regional frame and the latter for a wholly invented future society.
Which is safest for streaming?
Cyberpunk 2077 is the only game in this comparison with a documented official “Disable Copyrighted Music” toggle. That makes it the most practical starting point for creators, although you should still test the output and follow the current policy of the platform carrying your stream or video.

A practical decision guide
- Put catalog size first: pick Grand Theft Auto V for its documented 240 licensed songs.
- Put fictional-world immersion first: pick Cyberpunk 2077 for Night City’s curated genre mix and station identity.
- Prefer a classic soundtrack: pick Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, while checking the exact modern edition.
- Want the next release: monitor Grand Theft Auto VI, but do not count it as available until the “Coming November 19” release has occurred.
- Create livestreams or videos: begin with Cyberpunk 2077’s copyrighted-music control and confirm what your capture actually records.
How to verify a soundtrack before you buy or reinstall
- Confirm the platform: PC, console and mobile editions can have different licensing histories.
- Confirm the edition and update: remasters and major updates may add, remove or replace stations and songs.
- Check your region: rights are often negotiated territory by territory.
- Separate licensed music from original music: an announced album or score does not automatically increase the licensed-radio count.
- Check the publication date of any playlist: a list made for a launch version may not describe the current release.
- For streaming, test privately: enable the game’s creator-oriented setting, record a short clip and listen for music that remains audible.
Bottom line
For the broadest documented licensed radio, choose Grand Theft Auto V. For the most deliberately integrated futuristic radio and the clearest built-in streaming control, choose Cyberpunk 2077. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the historical classic, and Grand Theft Auto VI is an unreleased prospect rather than a current recommendation.
