Red Dead Redemption 2 is the best single substitute for GTA while you wait for Grand Theft Auto VI because it combines a highly detailed open world, unscripted encounters and a long, character-led story. If what you miss most is a modern city, choose Cyberpunk 2077; for hacking and satire, choose Watch Dogs 2; for martial-arts crime drama, choose Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition.
Rockstar Games currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That date and platform list can change, so check Rockstar’s official GTA VI page before making plans. No other game reproduces GTA’s exact mix of driving, crime storytelling, satire, character switching, systemic chaos and city-scale freedom. The useful question is which part of GTA you want to replace.

Quick picks by the GTA feature you want most
- Best overall Rockstar-style world: Red Dead Redemption 2. Its historical setting is slower than Los Santos, but its world detail, random encounters and story-led freedom are the closest overall match in this list.
- Best modern city: Cyberpunk 2077. Night City supplies dense streets, vehicles, gigs and criminal activity, while an RPG build and branching quests shape the experience more heavily than in GTA.
- Best hacking and satire: Watch Dogs 2. You manipulate connected city systems and approach missions creatively rather than relying on GTA’s gun-and-car loop.
- Best martial-arts crime story: Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition. Hong Kong-inspired streets, undercover-crime drama and hand-to-hand combat make it a focused alternative; verify the edition and storefront because it is an older release.
- Best stunts and destruction: Just Cause 4. The wingsuit, grappling hook and large-scale destruction make traversal the point, not realistic organized-crime storytelling.
- Best focused organized-crime narrative: Mafia 3. It puts a character-led revenge and crime story ahead of GTA’s broad sandbox freedom.
- Best co-op heists: Payday 2. It is built around squad robberies, not a solo open-world campaign.
- Best compact city packed with activities: Yakuza 0. It trades a huge map for dense side activities and an unconventional crime story.
- Best exploration and difficult encounters: Elden Ring. Its open world rewards discovery and combat mastery, but it is fantasy rather than a driving or crime game.
These matches follow the feature-based recommendations published by iTechGuides on October 4, 2026. The guide’s central advice is: “If you want one strong pick while you wait for Grand Theft Auto VI, choose Red Dead Redemption 2 for Rockstar’s detailed world and story-led freedom.”

“Like GTA” can mean several different things: cruising through a recognizable city, stealing vehicles, building a criminal empire, improvising with a living world, progressing an RPG character, or causing spectacular destruction. The games below share some of those traits, but each gives up at least one part of GTA’s formula. Use the comparison to identify the trade-off before you buy.

| Yakuza 0 | Compact 1980s Japanese city districts | Urban exploration is central; driving is not the defining activity | Strong crime drama with an offbeat tone | Very high activity density in a small setting | Character styles and upgrades support combat and side content | Minigames and side systems provide interaction instead of hacking | Combat is a major focus | Solo campaign | On-foot exploration and combat over vehicular traversal | Small map with exceptional activity density |
| Elden Ring | Open-world fantasy | Mounted travel replaces modern driving | No GTA-style crime sandbox | Organic discovery and hidden encounters | Deep character builds, equipment and progression | Exploration and combat systems replace urban hacking | Demanding melee and ranged combat | Primarily solo with optional multiplayer elements | Mount traversal, vertical exploration and difficult encounters | Large world designed around discovery rather than city activities |
Red Dead Redemption 2: the best overall substitute
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the strongest choice when what you value is the feeling that the world exists independently of the main missions. Its western setting replaces traffic, smartphones and modern nightlife with horses, frontier towns, wilderness travel and period firearms, but the underlying appeal is familiar: you can follow a long story, wander away from it, and encounter events that were not simply placed on a checklist.
Why it fits a GTA fan
- The world is richly detailed, with towns, wilderness and characters that react to your presence.
- Random encounters and unscripted activity reward travelling rather than fast-travelling from marker to marker.
- The campaign gives you a long, character-led narrative instead of a sequence of disconnected action missions.
- Freedom comes from choosing when to pursue story objectives, exploration, hunting and side encounters.
What you give up
The pace is deliberately slower than GTA. Horses are not sports cars, the period setting has no modern city infrastructure, and the story’s outlaw themes are not the same as contemporary urban satire. Choose it for world simulation and emergent storytelling, not for dense traffic, modern vehicles or a quick route to explosive chaos.
Cyberpunk 2077: the closest modern-city option
Cyberpunk 2077 is the most direct recommendation when the city itself matters. Night City is contemporary in its density and technology, with vehicles, gigs, criminal activity and layered districts to explore. You can drive between jobs, investigate side stories and approach encounters through combat, stealth or hacking.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhere it is closer to GTA
The urban scale, traffic-filled roads, criminal missions and vehicle access make it easier to recognize as a GTA alternative than a historical or fantasy game. Its city is built for wandering, and side gigs can pull you away from the main plot in the same way that GTA activities do.
Where the RPG structure changes the experience
Your build, equipment, cyberware and quest decisions shape what you can do. Progression is not a background layer: it determines how you solve encounters and how your character develops. That makes the game more role-playing-heavy than GTA’s broad crime-sandbox loop. Before buying, confirm whether the edition you are considering includes the Phantom Liberty expansion; listings differ by platform and package.
Watch Dogs 2: hacking, improvisation and satire
Watch Dogs 2 is the right fit if GTA’s biggest attraction for you is manipulating a city rather than simply driving through it. Its modern San Francisco-inspired setting is built around connected systems. You can hack devices and infrastructure, create distractions, manipulate threats and use remote tools to shape an approach.
How missions play differently
Instead of treating every objective as a shootout followed by a getaway, the game encourages reconnaissance and indirect solutions. Hacking lets you turn the environment against enemies or bypass them. The tone is also more focused on technology culture and satire, so its humor and story approach differ from GTA’s crime-world parody.
Who should choose it
Pick it when systemic interaction and creative infiltration matter more than a traditional criminal rise. It remains a city-driving game, but hacking—not vehicle theft or gunplay—is the feature that defines its identity.
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition: martial-arts crime drama
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition combines an open-world crime story with undercover drama, street driving, stunt action and martial arts. Its melee combat gives ordinary encounters a different rhythm from GTA’s firearm-heavy confrontations, while the city setting keeps the focus on urban movement and criminal factions.
Why it feels distinct
Hand-to-hand combat and environmental takedowns are central, so fights are more personal and technical. The story is tighter and more focused than GTA’s sprawling sandbox, which can appeal if you want a crime narrative with clear momentum rather than dozens of unrelated diversions.
Edition and storefront check
Because this is an older title, confirm the exact Definitive Edition, supported platform and regional storefront before purchase. Product names and availability can vary, and an older listing may not represent the version you expect.
Just Cause 4: stunts, wingsuits and destruction
Just Cause 4 is the pick for players who use GTA as a playground for stunts. Its wingsuit, grappling hook, vehicles and large-scale destruction make movement itself entertaining. You can chain traversal tools together, reach places quickly and create spectacular physical chaos.
Why it works as a waiting game
The emphasis on spectacle means you can create your own objectives: cross the map without touching the ground, dismantle a base with the grappling hook, or combine vehicles and explosives in improvised ways. It delivers more extreme traversal and destruction than GTA.
The trade-off
This is an action-adventure sandbox, not a grounded crime narrative. If you want believable organized-crime characters, a realistic city or a carefully paced story, choose another game on this list.
Mafia 3: a focused organized-crime story
Mafia 3 suits players who want the criminal rise-and-revenge arc without requiring a giant menu of unrelated activities. Its character-led story and open districts support a campaign about taking control of territory and dismantling rival power structures.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Its advantage over a broad sandbox
The open world serves the narrative. Driving, reconnaissance and district missions reinforce the central crime story instead of competing with it. That focus can be more satisfying than GTA if your priority is seeing one protagonist’s campaign through to its conclusion.
Rank #2
- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
Its limitation for GTA fans
It does not offer the same breadth of systemic city play or playful side-content variety. Choose it for organized-crime drama, period atmosphere and a directed campaign rather than unlimited urban experimentation.

Payday 2 is a targeted recommendation rather than a general GTA replacement. Its entire loop is built around planning and executing robberies with a squad. Loadouts, roles, stealth choices and coordinated escapes make teamwork the main source of freedom.
Why it can be the right answer
If your favorite GTA moments are heists, this gives you repeatable robberies with friends and a progression system that lets you specialize. Mission variables create different outcomes and encourage replay.

Why it is not an open-world substitute
There is no single city where you freely drive between story missions and activities. Locations are heist spaces, and the campaign is structured around missions. Select it only when co-op robbery planning outranks solo exploration.
Yakuza 0: compact-city variety and an offbeat crime story
Yakuza 0 compresses a surprising amount of activity into a small urban setting. Its crime narrative is dramatic but frequently eccentric, and the city districts are packed with side activities that reward walking around rather than crossing a massive map.
What makes the density valuable
You spend less time travelling and more time discovering diversions, minigames, characters and optional stories. Combat is a major part of the experience, with multiple fighting styles and progression tied to each protagonist.
Who should skip it
Choose something else if your definition of GTA requires long drives, modern car culture or a seamless large-scale map. Yakuza 0 is about concentrated urban personality, not geographic breadth.
Elden Ring: exploration without the crime sandbox
Elden Ring belongs on this list for a different reason: it captures the satisfaction of entering an open world with no obvious route and finding something unexpected. Its fantasy setting, mounted travel, hidden paths and difficult encounters replace GTA’s city life and vehicles with discovery and combat mastery.
What GTA players may enjoy
- Organic exploration where landmarks and curiosity guide you more than a checklist.
- A world that often withholds explanations and rewards experimentation.
- Deep character, equipment and build progression.
- Encounters that can be approached at your own pace, including returning later when you are stronger.
Why it is an adjacent choice
There is no modern city, driving loop or GTA-style criminal career. Combat is substantially more demanding, and the tone is dark fantasy. Buy it when exploration and challenging encounters are the features you want to carry into your next game.
Choose by your priority
You want the closest overall feeling
Start with Red Dead Redemption 2. It best preserves the combination of a reactive world, story-led freedom and unscripted encounters, even though its setting and travel pace are historical.
You want to drive around a modern city
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for the densest contemporary setting, or Watch Dogs 2 if hacking and non-lethal systems sound more appealing than RPG builds.
You want a crime story with a clear protagonist
Mafia 3 emphasizes organized-crime progression, while Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition adds undercover drama and martial-arts combat.
You want to make your own chaos
Just Cause 4 is the strongest fit for wingsuit travel, grappling-hook movement and destruction. It is intentionally less grounded than GTA.
You want to play with friends
Choose Payday 2 when coordinated heists are the goal. It is a co-op mission game, not a replacement for a solo open-world campaign.
You want dense side activities
Yakuza 0 puts variety into compact districts, while Elden Ring offers a much larger world whose activities are discovered through exploration and combat.

Buying and platform checks before you start
- Confirm the platform. Listings, supported editions and regional availability change. Check the current platform-specific store page rather than relying on a generic title listing.
- Check the edition name. For Sleeping Dogs, verify that the listing is the Definitive Edition. For Cyberpunk 2077, confirm whether Phantom Liberty is included or sold separately.
- Match the game to your play mode. Payday 2 is designed around squad co-op; the other recommendations here are primarily solo campaigns.
- Match the setting to your expectations. Historical, fantasy and period-crime games will not provide modern traffic, smartphones or contemporary city satire.
- Recheck price and inventory. Store prices and stock are time- and region-dependent, especially for older releases.
For a single purchase, choose Red Dead Redemption 2. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 instead when a modern city and RPG systems matter more than Rockstar-style pacing. The remaining games are better targeted choices: hacking, martial arts, destruction, organized crime, co-op heists, compact-city variety or fantasy exploration.
