Buying a modem-router combo is only a good shortcut if the gateway is approved for your cable provider and plan. A DOCSIS 3.1 label, Wi-Fi 7 branding, or a 10Gbps Ethernet port does not guarantee that the device will activate—or that your Internet connection will reach those speeds.

For most cable customers, the ARRIS SURFboard G54 is the strongest high-end choice. The G20 is the better value for gigabit-or-below plans, while the G18 covers basic service at a lower cost. Choose the G36 if you need a faster wired network but do not need the G54’s Wi-Fi 7 features.

Our picks at a glance

Model Best for Key hardware Main limitation
ARRIS SURFboard G54 Multi-gigabit cable plans and many Wi-Fi 6E/7 devices DOCSIS 3.1, Wi-Fi 7 BE18000, quad-band Wi-Fi, one 10Gbps port, four 1Gbps ports Shorter range than its speed results suggest; no telephone port; no link aggregation
ARRIS SURFboard G36 Plans up to about 2.5Gbps and several wired devices DOCSIS 3.1, Wi-Fi 6, one 2.5Gbps port, four 1Gbps ports Wireless range is weaker than the G20’s in testing
ARRIS SURFboard G20 Gigabit-or-below plans and mostly wireless homes DOCSIS 3.1, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, two 1Gbps LAN ports Theoretical networking capability tops out at 1Gbps and wired expansion is limited
ARRIS SURFboard G18 Basic service in an apartment or small single-story home DOCSIS 3.1, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, two LAN ports 1Gbps WAN limit, slower performance, and shorter range than the G20

These rankings follow current testing from RTINGS, which evaluates speed, range, and latency primarily as networking performance rather than as a guarantee of cable-provider compatibility. Check your provider’s approved-equipment list before ordering.

Best overall: ARRIS SURFboard G54

The ARRIS SURFboard G54 is the best fit for a fast cable plan and a home with newer Wi-Fi clients. It combines a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem with Wi-Fi 7 BE18000 and four radio bands: 2.4GHz, two 5GHz bands, and 6GHz. That gives compatible devices more room to connect and makes the G54 a sensible choice when several newer phones, laptops, gaming systems, or access points are competing for wireless capacity.

NETGEAR Nighthawk DOCSIS 3.1 Modem Router Combo CAX30, WiFi 6, 2.7 Gbps | Multi-Gig, Reliable Performance, Guided Set Up, 4× Gig Ports, Xfinity/Spectrum/Cox Compatible, Dual-band, Free Expert Help
  • CABLE INTERNET AND WIFI MADE FOR YOUR HOME: This two-in-one cable modem and WiFi router puts every setting in your hands, from your WiFi names and passwords to how your network runs, so it works the way your household needs.
  • APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps, Spectrum up to 1Gbps, and Cox up to 1Gbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
  • GET THE FULL SPEED OF YOUR PLAN: DOCSIS 3.1 supports Gigabit+ cable internet plans, so large downloads finish faster and 4K streaming, gaming, and video calls can all run at once. Actual speeds vary by plan and provider.
  • WIFI 6 COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AX2700 WiFi 6 covering up to 2,000 sq ft and capacity for 25+ connected devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
  • WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.

Its wired layout is also designed for multi-gigabit service: one Ethernet port supports up to 10Gbps, while the other four support 1Gbps each. Connect a multi-gigabit router, switch, or computer to the 10Gbps port. The four gigabit ports are not a way to create a 4Gbps connection.

Important G54 limitations

  • No link aggregation: ARRIS explicitly says the G54 does not support combining ports. Two 1Gbps ports cannot be joined to produce a 2Gbps link.
  • Range is not its strongest result: RTINGS found excellent speed but weaker range than its speed performance. A large, multi-floor, or heavily obstructed home may need a separate mesh system.
  • No telephone port: The G54 cannot replace a provider gateway when your package includes cable voice service.
  • Bridge mode has a condition: Open http://192.168.0.1, sign in, go to Gateway > Summary, select Enable beside Bridge Mode, and confirm with OK. This turns off the G54’s router and Wi-Fi functions. Bridge mode is unavailable while WAN over Ethernet is enabled.

Choose the G54 for speed and modern wireless hardware, not simply because “Wi-Fi 7” sounds better. Your ISP must approve it for your exact plan, and your clients must support the newer Wi-Fi bands to benefit fully.

Best upper mid-range: ARRIS SURFboard G36

The ARRIS SURFboard G36 is the practical middle ground for cable customers who need more than a basic gigabit gateway but do not need Wi-Fi 7. It has DOCSIS 3.1, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, one 2.5Gbps Ethernet port, and four additional 1Gbps ports.

The 2.5Gbps port is useful for a plan above 1Gbps or for a fast wired connection to a switch or desktop. It also gives the G36 more wired flexibility than the G20. RTINGS found the G36’s wired connectivity stronger than the G20’s, although the G20 performed better for wireless range in testing.

This is the better choice when several devices will be wired directly or when your Internet plan is around 2.5Gbps, subject to provider approval. It is less compelling for a small home with a gigabit-or-below plan and mostly wireless clients, where the less expensive G20 may provide better overall results.

Best mid-range: ARRIS SURFboard G20

The ARRIS SURFboard G20 is the value pick for a typical gigabit-or-below cable connection. It uses DOCSIS 3.1 and dual-band Wi-Fi 6, and RTINGS found better speed, latency, gaming, and range results than the more expensive G36 in its testing.

The trade-offs are straightforward: its theoretical networking capability is capped at 1Gbps, and it has only two 1Gbps LAN ports. That is enough for a laptop, desktop, game console, or small wired switch, but it is not ideal if you expect to connect many wired devices directly.

For a wireless-heavy apartment or average-size home, the G20 is easier to justify than paying extra for a multi-gig port you may never use. It is also a better match for a plan where the provider’s service—not the gateway—is already the main speed limit.

Useful G20 management details

The Web Manager is available through the gateway’s local address. Only one client device can be logged in at a time; a second login forces the first session out. Wi-Fi channel selection defaults to Auto, which ARRIS recommends leaving enabled. If you still need to change it, use Gateway > Connection > Wi-Fi, then choose 2.4 GHz Radio or 5 GHz Radio. Restart the gateway before making a manual channel change.

Best budget option: ARRIS SURFboard G18

The ARRIS SURFboard G18 is aimed at basic cable service rather than demanding multi-gigabit networking. It provides DOCSIS 3.1, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, two LAN ports, and a 1Gbps WAN limit.

Do not buy the G18 expecting a future multi-gig upgrade. Its 1Gbps WAN limit makes it the least forward-looking option in this group.

Check compatibility before buying

All four recommendations are cable gateways. They require coaxial cable service using DOCSIS. They are not universal broadband routers.

Fiber customers

Fiber service generally uses an Ethernet connection from the provider’s optical network terminal (ONT). You normally need a router with an Ethernet WAN port, not a cable modem-router combo. A cable gateway cannot replace the fiber ONT.

Cable customers

DOCSIS 3.1 alone is not enough. A provider can reject an otherwise capable modem, allow it only on certain tiers, or require a different device for a particular address. Approval can affect activation, stability, and the speed you receive.

For Xfinity, sign in to My Device Info for personalized results. Alternatively, enter your service address and select Search. Xfinity’s results can vary according to address, service type, and speed tier.

ARRIS maintains a compatibility list covering providers such as Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity, Optimum, Astound, Breezeline, Mediacom, Midco, Sparklight, and WOW!. If your provider is not listed, contact the provider directly before purchasing.

How to choose the right one

  1. Identify the access technology. Confirm that your service is cable DOCSIS, not fiber, DSL, or fixed wireless.
  2. Check the exact plan. Search the provider’s approved-device list using your address where required. Do not rely on a retailer’s generic “compatible with” label.
  3. Match the Ethernet port to the plan. The G18 and G20 are limited to 1Gbps-class networking. The G36 adds a 2.5Gbps port. The G54’s 10Gbps port is the one intended for connections above 1Gbps.
  4. Count wired devices. The G20 and G18 have two LAN ports; the G36 has one 2.5Gbps port plus four 1Gbps ports; the G54 has one 10Gbps port plus four 1Gbps ports.
  5. Assess coverage honestly. Faster Wi-Fi does not automatically mean longer range. For a large or obstructed property, budget for a separate mesh system or wired access point.
  6. Check voice service. If your cable package includes telephone service, verify that the gateway has the required telephone port. The G54 does not.

Combo gateway versus separate modem and router

A combo saves space, reduces setup steps, and can eliminate a modem rental. It is a convenient arrangement when your provider approves the device and the built-in Wi-Fi covers the home.

Separate equipment is more flexible. You can replace the router when Wi-Fi improves without replacing the cable modem, use a dedicated mesh system, and choose more advanced routing features. That flexibility matters if coverage is the main problem or if you expect to change providers or access technology.

Bridge mode can combine the two approaches: the cable gateway handles the modem function while a separate router handles Wi-Fi and routing. On the G54, bridge mode disables the gateway’s own wireless and router functions and passes the public IP to the connected router.

Common buying mistakes

  • Assuming every DOCSIS 3.1 device works everywhere: Provider certification and speed-tier approval still apply.
  • Equating a 10Gbps port with 10Gbps Internet: The port is a hardware ceiling. The plan, provider network, modem configuration, Ethernet adapter, Wi-Fi client, and congestion may all limit the result.
  • Combining G54 ports: The G54 does not support link aggregation. Use its 10Gbps port for a multi-gigabit wired uplink.
  • Buying Wi-Fi 7 to solve a coverage problem: Newer wireless standards can improve compatible-device performance, but they do not guarantee greater range.
  • Treating an app speed test as an ISP test: ARRIS says SURFboard Central’s local START TEST measures the mobile device-to-gateway Wi-Fi link. The app’s ISP speed-test service is not currently supported and may redirect you to an external test.

FAQ

What is the best modem-router combo in 2026?

The ARRIS SURFboard G54 is the best overall pick for an approved multi-gigabit cable plan and a home with Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 devices. It has DOCSIS 3.1, Wi-Fi 7, and a 10Gbps Ethernet port, but its range is not as strong as its speed performance and it has no telephone port.

Will these modem-router combos work with fiber Internet?

No. These are DOCSIS cable gateways that connect to coaxial cable service. Fiber customers generally need an Ethernet-WAN router connected to the provider’s ONT.

Is the G54’s 10Gbps port useful on a 1Gbps plan?

Usually not for Internet speed. The port provides hardware capacity for multi-gigabit service or a fast local-network connection, but your ISP plan, approval, wiring, and client hardware determine actual Internet performance.

Which model should I choose for a gigabit cable plan?

The ARRIS SURFboard G20 is the sensible mid-range choice for many gigabit-or-below plans, especially in mostly wireless homes. Choose the G36 instead if you need more wired ports or a 2.5Gbps Ethernet connection, and confirm compatibility with your provider.

The Bottom Line

Choose the ARRIS SURFboard G54 for an approved multi-gigabit cable plan and newer Wi-Fi clients. Choose the G36 for stronger wired connectivity without moving to Wi-Fi 7, the G20 for the best balance on gigabit-or-below service, and the G18 for basic service in a small home.

Before buying any of them, verify the exact model, address, and speed tier with your cable provider. If you have fiber, buy an Ethernet-WAN router instead.
