The best Microsoft Word resume template in 2026 is the one that makes your evidence easy to find for both a recruiter and an applicant-tracking system (ATS). For most applicants, start with ATS Simple Classic Resume or another single-column, text-forward design. Choose a reverse-chronological layout when your relevant employment history is steady, a functional layout when transferable skills are the stronger story, and a combination layout when you need both. The 24 picks below include Microsoft catalog names plus clearly marked editorial configurations for one-page, two-page, healthcare, portfolio, and cover-letter use.
Which Word resume template should you use first?
If you are applying to a conventional office, operations, finance, sales, or public-sector role, use ATS Simple Classic Resume. It gives you the safest starting structure: one column, conventional headings, restrained formatting, and enough room to show measurable accomplishments. Choose Reverse Chronological Resume when your recent jobs are relevant and show progression.
Use a role-labeled template as a starting point—not as a finished application. The accounting, healthcare, office-manager, nursing, sales, and graphic-design labels help you select a visual direction, but every heading, keyword, bullet, and achievement still needs to match the particular vacancy. Microsoft’s own guidance describes three core formats: reverse chronological, functional, and combination. The reverse chronological format is the “most widely used and recognized format,” while the other two solve different history and career-story problems.

This is an editorial shortlist, not an official Microsoft ranking. Microsoft’s catalog contains dozens of professionally designed resume and cover-letter templates, but Microsoft does not publish a ranked list of the “best” 20 or 24. Names identified as adaptations below are configurations of a Microsoft template rather than claims that Microsoft lists them under that exact name.
#1 Best Overall

The 24 best Microsoft Word resume-template choices
Use the tables as a selection guide. “ATS” describes the structure you should preserve, not a guarantee that any template will pass every employer’s software. A template becomes a credible application only after you replace its placeholders and tailor the content.
ATS and general-purpose templates
| # | Template | Best fit | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ATS Simple Classic Resume | Conservative, text-first applications in almost any field | Best default. Keep one column, standard headings, simple fonts, and minimal decoration. |
| 2 | ATS Office Manager Resume | Office administration, facilities, coordination, and operations | Translate duties into outcomes such as reduced processing time, improved scheduling, or controlled costs. |
| 3 | ATS Stylish Accounting Resume | Accounting, audit, bookkeeping, and finance applications | Retain the orderly structure; emphasize systems, reconciliations, controls, reporting, and quantified results. |
| 4 | ATS Healthcare Resume | Healthcare roles that need a structured, easy-to-scan presentation | Put licenses, certifications, clinical skills, and relevant systems where a recruiter can find them quickly. |
| 5 | Extended ATS Healthcare Resume | Longer healthcare histories or credential-heavy profiles | Use the extra space only for relevant evidence; do not add old or unrelated material simply to make two pages. |
| 6 | Simple ATS Healthcare Resume | Healthcare applicants who want the most pared-back layout | Choose this when rapid scanning and reliable text extraction matter more than visual branding. |
| 7 | Modern Basic Resume | General-purpose applications seeking a contemporary look | Keep the modern styling restrained if the employer uses automated screening. |
| 8 | Simple Sales Resume | Sales and business-development applications | Make quota attainment, growth, conversion, retention, territory, and pipeline achievements prominent. |
Nursing and healthcare choices
| # | Template | Best fit | Customization decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | Modern Nursing Resume | Nurses wanting a contemporary header | Use the header for identity, but keep licenses, specialties, clinical placements, and outcomes in plain, labeled sections. |
| 10 | Bold Nursing Resume | Nurses who want stronger visual hierarchy | Check that bold treatments do not crowd credentials or interfere with text extraction. |
| 11 | ATS Stylish Accounting Resume adapted for healthcare administration | Healthcare administrators with a finance or operations emphasis | This is an editorial adaptation, not a separate catalog title. Remove accounting-only labels and replace them with healthcare-administration keywords. |
| 12 | Extended ATS Healthcare Resume with a two-page experience strategy | Experienced clinicians or administrators with substantial relevant evidence | This is an editorial configuration. Two pages are justified by scope and relevance, not by a desire to fill space. |
Design and creative templates
| # | Template | Best fit | Risk control |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 | Elegant Graphic Design Resume | Graphic designers balancing portfolio identity with readable sections | Let the portfolio demonstrate visual range; keep employment history and skills text-forward. |
| 14 | White Minimalist Graphic Designer Resume | Designers who prefer restrained creative presentation | Use whitespace to separate sections, not to hide missing evidence. Check the exported PDF at normal zoom. |
| 15 | Graphic Header Professional Resume | Creative professionals wanting a modest visual header | Keep the body conventional and verify that the header does not push essential contact information into an image. |
| 16 | Modern Graphic Professional Resume | Creative-professional applications where branding matters | Use only when the target employer values presentation and the text remains selectable and readable. |
| 17 | Modern Basic Resume with a restrained color treatment | Creative roles that still need a broadly usable structure | This is an editorial configuration. Use color as an accent, not as the only way to distinguish sections. |
| 18 | Simple ATS Classic Resume with portfolio link | Applicants who want ATS priority and a work-sample destination | This is an editorial configuration. Add a short, readable portfolio URL as text and keep project context in the resume. |
Format-led configurations
| # | Configuration | Use it when | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19 | Reverse Chronological Resume | Your recent, relevant jobs show a coherent progression | Lead with the newest relevant role and make dates, employers, titles, and achievements easy to parse. |
| 20 | Functional Resume | Transferable skills matter more than a continuous chronology | Do not conceal employment dates. Include a clear history after the skills-led section. |
| 21 | Combination Resume | You are changing careers or have a mixed background | Balance a targeted skills summary with enough chronological detail to establish credibility. |
| 22 | One-page ATS Resume | You are early career or have a short, focused history | This is an editorial configuration. Keep only evidence relevant to the target posting; never shrink type to preserve low-value content. |
| 23 | Two-page ATS Resume | You have substantial, relevant experience, credentials, or projects | This is an editorial configuration. A second page must earn its place with useful evidence rather than repetition. |
| 24 | Resume plus matching cover letter set | The application benefits from a coordinated document pair | Microsoft recommends treating the resume and cover letter as a pair in a complete application kit. Match typography and contact details, but tailor the letter separately. |
Choose the right resume format before choosing a design
Reverse chronological
This is the safest choice for a continuous, relevant work history and the format most recruiters recognize. Put experience in reverse date order, then show accomplishments under each role. It works especially well when your latest position resembles the job you want next. It also makes gaps, short tenures, or an unrelated recent role visible, so use a different format when those facts need more context.
Functional
A functional resume leads with capabilities rather than a job-by-job narrative. It can help when you are returning after a break, combining freelance and volunteer work, or moving into a field where transferable skills matter more than titles. Include employers, titles, and dates in a clearly labeled history section; omitting chronology can create distrust and may confuse screening software.
Combination
A combination resume gives the reader a targeted skills section and a complete chronological record. It is often the most useful compromise for a career change, a mixed technical-and-management background, or a professional with projects that span several employers. Keep the opening skills evidence specific—tools, methods, scope, and results—rather than a generic list of traits.

What makes a Word resume template ATS-friendly?
ATS readability comes from predictable text structure, not from a label in the template name. Use a single main column, conventional section headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills, simple fonts, and limited graphics. Microsoft warns that complex columns, tables, text boxes, and decorative graphics can impair parsing. A visually impressive layout can therefore be a poor choice for an online application even if it looks excellent on screen.
- Keep text selectable. Your name, dates, job titles, achievements, and keywords should be real text rather than content embedded in an image.
- Use familiar labels. Rename artistic headings if they obscure what the section contains.
- Put important words in the body. Do not rely on icons, color, or a graphic skills bar to communicate proficiency.
- Limit layout complexity. Remove unnecessary sidebars, text boxes, multi-column blocks, and decorative shapes when parsing is a concern.
- Read the result as plain text. Copy text from the exported PDF into a blank document. If the order is scrambled, repair the layout before submitting.
There is no published official percentage for ATS pass rates or interview improvement from using one template. Treat “ATS-friendly” as a structural design goal, not a performance guarantee.

Office, operations, and administration
Start with ATS Office Manager Resume or ATS Simple Classic Resume. Replace generic duty statements with evidence: volume handled, turnaround time, scheduling scale, process improvements, vendors managed, systems used, or savings delivered.

Healthcare and nursing
Choose among ATS Healthcare Resume, Extended ATS Healthcare Resume, Simple ATS Healthcare Resume, Modern Nursing Resume, and Bold Nursing Resume according to the amount of credential and clinical detail you must present. Put licenses, registration, certifications, specialties, clinical settings, and relevant systems in clearly labeled text. Use the extended options only when the additional history is relevant to the position.
Sales
Simple Sales Resume is useful when achievements need to scan quickly. Lead bullets with the result—quota percentage, revenue, growth, retention, conversion, average deal size, or territory scope—then explain the action and context.
Graphic design and creative work
The creative templates can establish a visual identity, but the portfolio remains the place to demonstrate finished work. Keep the resume’s text selectable, provide a readable portfolio link, and make software, disciplines, clients, and outcomes explicit. If the employer uses an ATS, move toward the Simple ATS Classic configuration and reduce decorative elements.

Use one page when you are early career or can present a focused set of directly relevant evidence without crowding. Use two pages when substantial, relevant experience, credentials, projects, publications, or clinical history cannot be represented accurately on one page. Page count is a content decision: do not add filler to reach two pages, and do not compress useful evidence into unreadable type to force one page.

How to create and tailor a resume in Word
- Open the template catalog. In Word, choose File > New, then type Resume or Cover Letter in the search box. You can also browse Microsoft Create’s resume catalog.
- Select a structure. Decide reverse chronological, functional, or combination before choosing colors or decorative details.
- Replace every placeholder. Follow Microsoft’s instruction to “Replace the placeholder text with your own information.” Enter contact details, experience, skills, education, credentials, projects, and relevant achievements. Delete unused sample sections rather than leaving blank labels.
- Map the vacancy’s language. Compare the job description with your draft. Add accurate keywords for tools, methods, certifications, and responsibilities, then prove them in accomplishment bullets. Never copy a requirement you cannot support.
- Refine wording. Microsoft recommends Copilot or the Word editor for polishing language while preserving an ATS-friendly structure. Review every suggestion yourself; automated wording can change meaning, inflate claims, or introduce a skill you do not have.
- Run an ATS simplification pass. Remove unnecessary graphics, text boxes, complex columns, tables, and decorative elements when the application route is likely to parse the file automatically.
- Save a master source. Keep a tailored DOCX with a recruiter-friendly filename such as
LastName_FirstName_Resume. Make a new copy for each vacancy so you can adjust keywords without losing the previous version. - Choose the submission format. Send DOCX when the employer specifically requests it. Otherwise export to PDF when permitted, because it preserves the intended page layout more reliably across devices.
- Inspect the exported file. Open the PDF and check fonts, spacing, page breaks, alignment, links, and copied text. Confirm that the first page contains your identity and target-relevant evidence, and that no text has disappeared behind a shape or moved into an unexpected order.
Common problems and precise fixes
The template looks good but the text extracts in the wrong order
Switch to a single-column version, remove sidebars and text boxes, and retest by copying the PDF’s text into a blank document. If the reading order remains broken, rebuild the affected section with ordinary paragraphs and headings.
The resume is longer than intended
Cut repetition before changing the font. Combine bullets that describe the same result, remove obsolete tools, and keep older roles to the evidence relevant to the target job. If the remaining content is still substantial and relevant, use the two-page configuration rather than shrinking the document.
The design feels too plain for a creative role
Use a restrained header, typography, or color accent, then preserve conventional section text. A portfolio link and strong project descriptions communicate creative ability more reliably than decorative graphics that obscure content.

The PDF changed after export
Check page breaks, line wrapping, font substitution, spacing, and hyperlinks in the exported file itself. Correct the DOCX, export again, and repeat the visual and copied-text checks before uploading.
How to make a template sound like your work
Templates solve hierarchy; they do not supply evidence. For each recent role, write bullets that connect an action to a result and include enough context to judge scale. “Managed scheduling” is weaker than a precise description of the volume, system, improvement, or outcome you can substantiate. Prioritize achievements that mirror the vacancy’s responsibilities, and move the strongest matching evidence toward the top of the page.
Maintain a master DOCX containing your complete, accurate history, then create a tailored copy for every application. Microsoft’s career guidance rejects a one-size-fits-all approach: the same template can support multiple applications, but the wording, order, and selected evidence should change with the job description.
Are Microsoft Word resume templates free?
Microsoft Support directs users to Word’s template search and Microsoft Create’s catalog, where resume and cover-letter designs are available to browse and download. The exact access conditions, sign-in requirements, and regional availability can change, so check the current listing for the specific template you choose. Do not assume that a catalog design removes the need to edit, tailor, or inspect the finished document.
Should you include a matching cover letter?
When the application asks for one—or when a short explanation would clarify a career change, relocation, or unusual experience—a matching cover letter set can make the documents feel coherent. Use the same basic typography and contact details, but write the letter for the specific employer and role. A matching design is useful; duplicated paragraphs are not.
