Firefox is the strongest all-around choice if you want to leave Microsoft’s account ecosystem without moving to another Chromium browser. It can import Edge bookmarks, passwords, history and preferences, then sync bookmarks, passwords, tabs and more through a Mozilla account. Choose Chrome if your work and personal life already run on Google, Brave if privacy defaults matter most, Vivaldi if you want highly customizable browsing with locally controlled sync encryption, or Opera if bundled convenience tools are more important than minimizing account dependencies.
Changing browsers is not just an engine decision. Edge can synchronize favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill and payment information across signed-in devices. The practical question is therefore: which company, if any, should hold the equivalent data, and which categories do you actually want synchronized?
Quick comparison: which Edge alternative fits your account goals?
| Browser | Best fit | Account and sync model | Engine | Notable strengths |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox | Leaving Microsoft and avoiding Chromium | Mozilla account; Firefox Sync covers bookmarks, passwords, tabs and more | Non-Chromium | One-click Edge import; independent browser engine |
| Chrome | People already invested in Google services | Google sign-in enables cross-device information; signing in is optional | Chromium-based | Deep Google ecosystem continuity |
| Brave | Privacy-first defaults with Chromium compatibility | Optional profile syncing across devices | Chromium-based | Built-in ad, tracker and cookie blocking; fingerprinting protection |
| Vivaldi | Power users who want extensive customization | Sync supports bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, open tabs and settings; encryption password remains local | Chromium-based | User-controlled sync encryption and flexible interface |
| Opera | Convenience features inside the browser | Account requirements vary by feature; its in-browser VPN can be used without an account | Chromium-based | Flow sharing, workspaces, ad and tracker blocking, built-in VPN |
There is no universal “most private” or “best” replacement. A browser may block trackers by default while still offering an optional account, and a browser that avoids a Microsoft account may move your synced data into another company’s cloud. Evaluate the account, sync scope and privacy controls separately.

What actually changes when you leave Edge?
Edge’s signed-in sync can include favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill and payment information. Moving away from Edge means deciding what happens to each category rather than treating “browser data” as one indivisible package.

- Bookmarks and history: Usually easy to import, but verify folders, reading lists and recently visited pages after migration.
- Passwords: Import is convenient, but a browser profile is not a complete backup. Keep an independent password-manager copy before changing browsers.
- Open tabs: They may not transfer in the same way as favorites. Keep Edge available until important sessions and URLs have been checked.
- Extensions: Firefox uses a different extension ecosystem. Chromium browsers generally offer a more familiar transition, although individual extensions can still behave differently.
- Autofill and payment details: These are particularly sensitive and may require separate verification or re-entry. Do not assume that a successful password import also carried payment data.
- Passkeys and active logins: Browser migration can leave you signed out or require a passkey stored on another device. Test critical accounts before removing Edge.
Firefox: the best non-Chromium escape from Microsoft’s account ecosystem
Why choose Firefox
Firefox is the major Windows alternative that does not use Chromium. That matters if you want browser-engine diversity, prefer Mozilla’s account ecosystem, or want to reduce dependence on the rendering technology shared by Edge, Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi and Opera.
Mozilla says Firefox can import Edge bookmarks, passwords, history and preferences with one click. Firefox Sync then makes bookmarks, passwords, tabs and other selected data available across devices. This gives you the smoothest route from an Edge profile to a different company and a different engine without rebuilding your browser manually.
Account and privacy trade-offs
A Mozilla account is useful when you need Sync, but it is not required simply to browse. Create one only if cross-device continuity is worth placing the selected data categories in Mozilla’s synchronization service. Review Sync settings rather than enabling every category automatically.
Where Firefox may require adjustment
- Some websites are optimized first for Chromium and may render differently.
- Chromium-only extensions may need Firefox equivalents.
- Profiles, containers and privacy controls can be more different from Edge than a Chromium-to-Chromium move.
Chrome: the practical choice for a Google-centered account setup
What Chrome changes
Chrome is another Chromium-based browser, so most modern websites and many extensions will feel familiar to an Edge user. Google states that signing in to Chrome with a Google Account makes your information available on all your devices and unlocks additional Chrome features. Chrome sign-in is optional, so you can use the browser without tying its local profile to a Google account.
Who should choose it
Chrome makes sense when Gmail, Google Drive, Google Workspace, Android or other Google services already form the center of your daily workflow. One account can then provide continuity for bookmarks, passwords and other supported browser information across Windows and other devices.
Important account decision
Chrome solves the “I do not want a Microsoft account” problem, but it does not eliminate account-based synchronization. It substitutes Google’s ecosystem for Microsoft’s when you sign in. If your real goal is browsing without any cloud account, keep Chrome signed out and use local exports or an independent password manager for portability.

Brave: privacy-first defaults without giving up Chromium compatibility
Built-in protections
Brave lists built-in blocking for third-party ads, cross-site trackers and cookies, fingerprinting protection, HTTPS upgrades and cross-device profile syncing. It supports Windows and uses Chromium-based technology, so many Edge and Chrome extensions and websites require little adjustment.
The Tool Desk

Brave’s profile-sync approach can provide continuity without making the browser feel like a conventional cloud-service dashboard. Decide which profile data you want synchronized and whether that convenience outweighs keeping the profile local.
Best use case
Choose Brave when you want stronger out-of-the-box blocking and a familiar Chromium foundation. It is especially suitable for readers who want to reduce routine tracking without abandoning compatibility with Chromium-oriented sites and extensions.
Vivaldi: maximum customization with locally controlled sync encryption
What Vivaldi syncs
Vivaldi supports synchronization of bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, open tabs and settings. That broad scope can reproduce much of the continuity Edge users expect, while the browser’s interface and workflow can be configured extensively.
Why the encryption design matters
Vivaldi states that your encryption password is never sent to Vivaldi or any other third party, which means Vivaldi cannot decrypt the synchronized data. The password is used locally to protect the sync content. Store it safely: losing it can prevent access to the encrypted synchronized data.
Sync is not backup
Vivaldi explicitly warns that Sync is not a backup service. Keep an independent export or password-manager copy before migration, and do not treat a second synchronized device as protection against accidental deletion or corruption.

Best use case
Vivaldi is a strong fit if you want a highly adjustable interface, workspaces and detailed browser controls while retaining Chromium compatibility and a sync design in which you control the encryption password.
Opera: bundled tools for people who value convenience
Included workflow features
Opera documents an accountless in-browser VPN, ad and tracker blockers, Flow for cross-device sharing and workspaces. These tools can reduce the number of separate utilities you need for routine browsing and device handoffs.
Account considerations
The VPN can be used without an account, but requirements differ by feature. Check each feature’s current sign-in behavior before assuming that an account-free setup applies to synchronization or Flow. Opera is therefore best for readers prioritizing built-in convenience rather than a single, clearly defined account-minimization model.

Best use case
Choose Opera when workspaces, quick device-to-device sharing and built-in browsing tools are more valuable than maintaining the simplest possible account structure.
Chromium versus Firefox: the engine decision
Firefox is the major non-Chromium option in this comparison. Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi and Opera use Chromium-based technology, as does Edge. A Chromium-to-Chromium move usually reduces compatibility surprises, because websites and extensions are built around similar rendering behavior. Firefox gives you greater engine diversity, but it may require checking critical sites and finding replacement extensions.
| Priority | Usually points toward | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Different browser engine | Firefox | It is the non-Chromium choice among these options. |
| Lowest website and extension friction | Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi or Opera | They share Chromium-based technology with Edge. |
| Privacy defaults | Brave | Blocking and fingerprinting protections are built in. |
| Encryption password controlled locally | Vivaldi | Its sync encryption password is not sent to Vivaldi. |
| Integrated convenience features | Opera | VPN, Flow and workspaces are built into the browser. |
How to move from Edge without losing important data
1. Preserve an independent copy first
Before uninstalling or signing out of Edge, export passwords to your independent password manager or another secure storage method. Also preserve important bookmarks and note any passkeys, extensions and active sessions that you cannot easily recreate.

2. Install the replacement from its official Windows source
Download the browser from the publisher’s official Windows site. Avoid repackaged installers, and keep Edge installed during the transition.

3. Import Edge data
Open the new browser’s settings and look for an option such as Import browser data or Import bookmarks and settings. Microsoft documents that Edge can import from other browsers and from HTML or CSV files, which is useful if the target browser cannot read the Edge profile directly.
- Choose Microsoft Edge as the source when it is offered.
- Select only the categories you need, such as favorites, passwords, history or settings.
- For bookmarks exported as HTML, select the HTML file; for password exports, select the CSV file only through a trusted local workflow.
- Complete the import, then inspect folders, duplicate entries and password records.
4. Decide whether to create the new account
Create a Mozilla, Google, Brave or Vivaldi account only when its synchronization benefits match your privacy and continuity requirements. Opera’s feature-specific account behavior should be checked individually. If you want a local-only profile, skip account creation and use an independent password manager for cross-device access.
5. Enable only necessary sync categories
Start with bookmarks and passwords if those are the only items you need. Add tabs, history, extensions, settings, autofill or payment-related data only after considering the sensitivity and usefulness of each category.
6. Verify on a second device
Sign in on another Windows computer or supported device and confirm that the selected bookmarks, passwords and tabs appear. Test a few critical logins without deleting the originals.

Migration problems and fixes
Passwords imported but do not autofill
Check that the browser is using the intended profile, that password saving and autofill are enabled, and that the imported entries contain the correct website domains. Some sites use separate login domains, so a record may need editing.
Bookmarks are missing or duplicated
Inspect the imported folder, bookmark bar and “Other bookmarks” area. If you imported more than once, remove duplicates only after confirming that the original folders and URLs are present.
Important extensions are unavailable
For Firefox, search for a maintained equivalent in its extension ecosystem. For Chromium-based alternatives, install the extension again and verify permissions rather than assuming the old Edge installation transferred.
Tabs did not appear on the new device
Confirm that tab synchronization is enabled on both devices and that they use the same account or profile. If the tabs are still missing, copy critical URLs manually from Edge before closing it.
The sync account feels too invasive
Disable categories you do not need, sign out of optional browser accounts, or switch to a local profile plus an independent password manager. “Different from Microsoft” does not automatically mean “account-free.”
A Vivaldi encryption password was forgotten
Vivaldi’s design prevents the service from decrypting synchronized data without that password. Check your secure records and any other authorized device before resetting the setup; do not assume support can recover encrypted sync content.
Decision guide by reader goal
- “I want a different engine and an easy Edge migration.” Choose Firefox.
- “My work, phone and files are already Google-based.” Choose Chrome, or use Chrome signed out if you only want local browsing.
- “I want blocking and privacy protections enabled by default.” Choose Brave.
- “I want deep customization and control over sync encryption.” Choose Vivaldi, while keeping a separate backup.
- “I want a browser with built-in VPN, sharing and workspace tools.” Choose Opera after checking which features require an account.
- “I want no browser account at all.” Use any suitable browser locally, disable optional sign-in and sync, and keep passwords in an independent manager. You will give up some automatic cross-device continuity.
Bottom line
For most Windows users specifically trying to leave Microsoft’s account experience, Firefox offers the clearest break with a straightforward Edge import and broad cross-device Sync. Chrome is the least disruptive choice for Google households, Brave emphasizes privacy defaults while preserving Chromium compatibility, Vivaldi combines customization with locally controlled sync encryption, and Opera packages useful tools into the browser. Make the final choice by deciding first where bookmarks, passwords, tabs and other sensitive data should live, then migrate gradually and verify everything before retiring Edge.
