Jellyfin is the best fit if you want a free, open-source server and full control; Plex is the easiest choice for a polished app ecosystem and sharing, provided you account for its current remote-playback rules; and Emby suits people who want a configurable personal server with broad device support and optional Premiere features. None of them streams a DVD or Blu-ray straight from the disc: first convert your legally owned discs into video files, organize them in folders, and let the server catalog and stream those files. The right choice depends less on the server’s name than on your devices, whether you watch away from home, and how often your files need transcoding.

What does a media server do with a disc collection?

A home media server indexes video files stored on a computer, NAS, or other supported device and makes them available to playback apps. It does not replace the physical disc or act as a disc player: the collection needs to be converted into files before you add it to a library.

Once a server scans the folders, it identifies media and presents it in a catalog. When you choose a video, the server and playback device determine how it can be delivered. If the device supports the file as stored, it may play unchanged; if not, the server may repackage the streams or convert video, audio, or subtitles. That distinction matters for picture quality, network use, and the hardware you need.

Before converting discs, check the laws that apply where you live. The recommendation here assumes you are working with legally owned discs, but ownership alone does not settle every jurisdiction’s rules about copying or bypassing disc protection.

Which media server should you choose?

Choose by the trade-off you care about most: Jellyfin emphasizes control and no premium license, Plex emphasizes a polished client ecosystem and sharing, and Emby offers a configurable personal server with optional paid features.

What matters most Best starting point Why Trade-off to check
Open-source control and no subscription Jellyfin It is free software with no premium licenses or hidden subscription features. You manage more of the setup and troubleshooting yourself.
Polished apps and easy sharing Plex It has a broad app ecosystem, and local personal-media playback is free. Remote personal-video playback in affected apps has pass requirements since April 29, 2025; hardware-accelerated streaming also requires Plex Pass for the server owner.
Configurable personal server and user controls Emby It serves personal libraries across many device types and offers parental controls. Some capabilities, including hardware-accelerated transcoding and mobile downloads, are Premiere features.

All three can serve a home collection. None removes the need to check whether your TV or streaming device supports the video, audio, and subtitle formats in your files. Direct Play compatibility can reduce the need for server-side conversion, so the client you actually use should influence your choice.

How do Jellyfin, Plex, and Emby handle playback?

Each server can send a compatible file unchanged, but the terminology and exact choices differ. The key question is whether the client can play the source file and whether your network can carry it at its original bitrate.

Jellyfin: Direct Play, remux, Direct Stream, or Transcode

Jellyfin distinguishes four playback paths. Direct Play sends the file unchanged. Remuxing changes the container while keeping compatible media streams; Direct Stream adapts compatible streams for the client. Transcoding converts video, audio, or subtitles when the client cannot use the source as-is. Jellyfin’s playback guidance describes these paths separately, so check the server’s playback details when a file behaves differently than expected.

Jellyfin supports hardware acceleration on modern Intel, NVIDIA, AMD, Apple, and Rockchip hardware. That can be valuable when conversion is needed, particularly with demanding formats. HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping can be very slow in software, so a collection with HDR video is a reason to verify suitable GPU support rather than assuming a general-purpose CPU will handle every conversion smoothly.

Plex: Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding

Plex Direct Play sends a compatible file without changing it. Direct Stream repackages compatible streams, while transcoding converts tracks or reduces resolution or bitrate to suit the playback device or connection. Unsupported subtitles can trigger a full video transcode, even when the video itself would otherwise play directly.

Plex’s core server and basic local personal-media playback are free. However, server-side hardware-accelerated streaming requires Plex Pass for the server owner. That is separate from the remote-playback policy: since April 29, 2025, affected apps require Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass on the viewer’s account or a qualifying server administrator’s account for remote personal-video playback. Local playback remains free. Verify the applicable account and app requirements before building a setup around remote viewing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emby: Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding

Emby Direct Play leaves a compatible file untouched. Direct Stream can change the container or audio and subtitle tracks while preserving the video. Transcoding re-encodes media when codec, bitrate, or subtitle compatibility requires it. This is why a file that plays directly on one client may need conversion on another.

Emby separates its server from its client apps and organizes personal video, music, and photos. Emby Premiere unlocks bonus features that include mobile downloads and hardware-accelerated transcoding; some app capabilities also depend on Premiere. Check the feature you need against the current tier before relying on it.

What hardware do you need for a home media server?

For a modest library and compatible local clients, start with a computer or NAS that can run your chosen server and store the files. Hardware requirements rise when the server must transcode, especially for high-resolution or HDR video, multiple simultaneous viewers, or clients with limited codec support.

Use separate storage for the system and the library

An SSD is useful for the operating system, server files, metadata database, and transcoding cache, where quick access helps routine operations. Large hard drives or a NAS pool are generally a better fit for the media library itself. Jellyfin’s current hardware guidance recommends a 100GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache.

Plan the network around where you watch

Connect the server to the router or switch using Ethernet where practical; Jellyfin’s hardware guidance calls for gigabit Ethernet or faster. If you plan to watch remotely, the upload speed at the server’s location matters more than the download speed on the viewing device. Jellyfin recommends at least 20 Mbps upload bandwidth for remote access. Treat that as its guidance, not a guarantee of a particular number of streams: the required bandwidth also depends on the media bitrate and whether it must be converted.

Choose CPU and GPU for the formats that need conversion

Jellyfin’s current hardware guide recommends 8GB of RAM for an average deployment and lists Intel N100 among suitable integrated-graphics CPUs. These are guidance figures, not a promise about stream count or performance. Before buying a discrete GPU, check whether the server hardware and your files actually require conversion. A direct-play setup can avoid many transcoding demands; formats such as HEVC 10-bit and HDR are important to consider when matching hardware and clients.

For Plex on a NAS, Plex advises choosing an x86 processor fast enough for the transcodes you expect or a supported ARM model. Many ARM NAS models do not support video transcoding. Remote viewing and subtitle handling are common reasons a file that seems compatible can still require transcoding, so check those cases as well as local playback.

How do you set up a server for your collection?

The basic sequence is the same across the three choices: prepare video files, store them in a predictable folder structure, install the server on hardware that stays available, then test playback on the devices you intend to use.

  1. Convert and organize the discs. Create video files from discs you are legally permitted to copy. Keep movies and television episodes organized in clearly named folders so the server can scan and identify them. The server streams files, not physical discs.
  2. Choose where the library lives. Put the media on local storage or a NAS accessible to the server. Use an SSD for the system, server data, metadata, and transcode cache where possible; reserve larger HDDs or NAS storage for the library.
  3. Install a server that matches your priorities. Jellyfin provides server packages for Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker, NAS, and other platforms. Plex can run on a computer, compatible NAS, or NVIDIA SHIELD. Emby uses a server plus client apps. Confirm the specific platform and device support in the product’s current documentation.
  4. Add the library folders. In the server setup, point the library at the folders containing your media and let it scan and identify the files. Review any incorrectly identified titles or episodes in the server interface.
  5. Install and test a playback client. Use the app for your TV, streamer, phone, browser, or other device. Start with a file that represents your collection’s common formats and confirm whether it plays directly or transcodes.
  6. Test remote access only if you need it. Remote viewing requires network configuration and adequate upload capacity. Check Plex’s current account/pass requirements if using Plex, and secure any self-managed server exposed beyond your home network.

When should you choose each server?

Choose Jellyfin for control and subscription-free use

Jellyfin is the natural starting point if open-source software, local control, and avoiding premium licenses matter more than a turnkey sharing experience. Its no-premium-feature model keeps its core proposition straightforward. The trade-off is that setup, network configuration, and diagnosis are more your responsibility.

Choose Plex for broad device support and sharing

Plex is a strong fit if you value polished apps across many devices and want to share a personal library. Its local playback remains free, but remote video access and hardware acceleration have distinct paid-feature rules. Those rules can change the total cost and convenience of a family setup, so check them against how each person will watch.

Choose Emby for configurable personal-server features

Emby is worth evaluating if you want a personal server with broad clients and parental controls, and are comfortable deciding whether Premiere features justify the paid tier. Its server/client separation and playback paths give flexibility, but verify which specific functions you need are included in the tier you plan to use.

Let the playback situation decide when preferences are close

If you will watch only on a few modern devices at home, prioritize the interface you prefer and files those devices can Direct Play. For mixed devices, remote viewers, HDR, subtitles, or several simultaneous users, weigh client compatibility and transcoding capability more heavily than the headline server features.

What commonly causes playback problems?

Most frustrating playback issues come from a mismatch between the file, the client, and the connection—not simply from choosing the wrong brand of server. Check the playback path and server activity before replacing hardware.

SPC module and CloudSync (compatible with Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox) enable seamless cross-platform synchronization and uninterrupted data access. Additionally, TerraSync enables two-way sync between the F4-425 and PCs/Macs
  • The server transcodes when you expected Direct Play: check whether the client supports the file’s video and audio codecs, container, and subtitle format. Subtitles can be the cause; Plex notes that unsupported subtitles may force a full video transcode.
  • Remote playback buffers: check the server location’s upload capacity and the file’s bitrate. Jellyfin’s 20 Mbps upload recommendation is a planning reference, not a universal stream guarantee.
  • HDR video is slow to convert: confirm that the hardware acceleration path supports the server’s source and target formats. Jellyfin warns that HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping can be very slow in software.
  • A NAS plays files locally but struggles to convert them: verify that its processor and server build support video transcoding. Plex specifically cautions that many ARM NAS models do not support it.
  • A feature is unavailable in the app or account: check the service tier and account conditions, rather than assuming a server installation alone unlocks every function. This is particularly important for Plex remote video and hardware acceleration, and for Emby Premiere features.

How much should you spend on the server setup?

The software choice can cost nothing to start with, but hardware and optional features shape the eventual expense. Jellyfin has no premium licenses. Plex offers a free local core alongside paid features, with remote playback and hardware-accelerated streaming subject to the rules described above. Emby has an optional Premiere tier for selected capabilities. Current prices and exact plan terms are not established here, so check each service’s current terms before budgeting.

For hardware, a computer you already own may be enough if it runs the server and your clients can play files directly. If buying hardware, focus first on an SSD for system and cache, reliable Ethernet, and storage sized for the collection. An Intel N100-class mini PC is one example Jellyfin lists as suitable integrated-graphics hardware; suitability is not a guarantee of performance for every codec, HDR conversion, or concurrent stream. A NAS is convenient for always-on storage, but check processor support carefully if transcoding matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate app on my TV to watch my server?

Usually, yes: the server manages and delivers the library, while a client app on the TV, streamer, phone, or browser plays it. Confirm that a client exists for your exact device and supports the media formats you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will adding a GPU make every movie play smoothly?

No. A GPU can help with supported hardware-accelerated transcoding, but it cannot make an unsupported format or client pairing universally compatible. Direct Play support and the server’s specific hardware-acceleration configuration still matter.

Can a server stream music and photos as well as movies?

Yes. Plex and Emby document libraries for music and photos as well as video, and Jellyfin is designed to manage and stream personal media. The client features available for each media type can differ by platform.
