The best local-AI hardware is the machine that gives your model enough usable memory, then delivers the memory bandwidth and software acceleration your workload needs. A GeForce RTX 5090 is the straightforward high-speed desktop choice when the model fits its VRAM. A 128GB AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system or a high-memory Apple Silicon Mac is better when capacity matters more than peak discrete-GPU speed. A 16GB computer is a sensible experimentation floor, but larger models will be slow or require aggressive quantization.

Use this guide to match model size, quantization, memory, runtime support, and practical constraints before you buy. The memory figures below describe planning capacity, not guaranteed performance: your operating system, context length, application, and model architecture all consume part of the pool.

Start with the decision that matters: capacity or speed?

Local inference has two separate limits. The first is whether the model can be loaded at all. The second is how quickly it generates tokens once loaded. Memory capacity sets the first limit; memory bandwidth, processor design, kernels, drivers, and software backends largely determine the second.

Discrete graphics cards keep model data in dedicated VRAM. Apple Silicon and AMD Ryzen AI Max systems use a unified or shared memory pool: the CPU, integrated graphics, model weights, runtime buffers, and the operating system draw from the same physical memory. A computer advertised with 128GB therefore does not have 128GB available to a model. Reserve space for the OS, your inference application, the context cache, temporary buffers, and any other programs you keep open.

Choose a speed-first desktop when you mainly run models that fit in one GPU and want mature CUDA acceleration. Choose a capacity-first unified-memory system when fitting a larger model is more important than maximum tokens per second. Choose a 16GB machine only when small quantized models, learning, and occasional use meet your needs.

How much memory a local model really needs

Weights are only the starting point

A model file contains weights, but inference also allocates runtime workspaces and a key-value (KV) cache for the conversation context. Longer prompts and longer generated conversations increase KV-cache use. Quantization lowers the weight portion, yet it does not eliminate those other allocations.

A useful planning equation is:

required memory ≈ model weights + runtime buffers + KV cache + operating-system/application reserve

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a rough weight-only estimate, multiply parameter count by bits per parameter and divide by eight. A 120-billion-parameter model at nominal 4-bit precision is about 60GB of weights before metadata, buffers, and cache. At 8-bit it is about 120GB before those overheads. These are arithmetic estimates, not promises about a particular file format; actual files vary with quantizer, vocabulary, architecture, and packaging.

Usable memory is lower than the advertised number

On a 16GB machine, the OS and application may leave substantially less than 16GB for a model. The same principle applies to a 128GB unified-memory computer. If a model barely fits when no other software is running, it may fail when you open a browser, increase context length, or load a second model.

Context length changes the result

Two users can run the same quantized model on the same computer and see different memory use because their context limits differ. Start with the context size you actually need, then increase it while watching memory. A compact context is often the difference between a stable session and an out-of-memory error on a capacity-constrained system.

Quantization: the main fit-versus-quality trade-off

Quantization stores weights with fewer bits. Lower-bit files occupy less memory and usually run on more modest hardware, while higher precision generally preserves more model quality at the cost of capacity and bandwidth.

Quantization level Capacity effect When it is useful Quality consideration
1.5–3 bit Smallest weight footprint Making an otherwise too-large model fit Greater quality risk; validate important tasks yourself
4 bit Balanced memory use General local chat and constrained systems AMD identifies Q4_K_M as a commonly used baseline
5–6 bit More memory than 4-bit When you have headroom and want a quality margin Often a practical compromise for demanding prompts
8 bit Approximately twice the weight storage of 4-bit Quality-sensitive work with ample memory AMD notes higher precision is preferable for coding quality when memory allows

llama.cpp supports 1.5-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 8-bit integer quantization. Treat the bit label as a planning aid rather than an exact file-size guarantee. Different quantization schemes add different overheads, and the runtime still needs cache and workspace memory.

How to choose a quantizer

  1. Begin with Q4_K_M when you need a broadly used 4-bit baseline and are unsure which file to download.
  2. Move to Q5 or Q6 if the model fits comfortably and you notice quality loss on your tasks.
  3. Prefer Q6 or Q8 for coding-sensitive work when your machine has enough free memory, following AMD’s guidance that higher precision can improve coding quality.
  4. Use very low-bit files only deliberately. They can make a large model fit, but test factuality, instruction following, and code output before relying on them.

Hardware tiers and who should buy them

16GB-class computers: an entry point, not a performance tier

A 16GB computer is suitable for learning local inference, small models, and experiments. A 2026 technical guide from the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe reports that a 16GB machine can run DeepSeek-R1 14B slowly. Read that as a capacity-floor example, not a speed guarantee: generation rate depends on the processor, backend, quantization, context, and thermal limits.

  • Good fit: small quantized models, short contexts, prompt testing, and development work.
  • Expect: modest tokens per second and possible CPU-only or heavily offloaded execution.
  • Avoid: assuming that a 14B model at one quantization will perform the same at another, or that a second application will leave enough memory.

GeForce RTX 5090: the straightforward discrete-GPU choice

The GeForce RTX 5090 is a strong single-card option when your chosen model fits its available VRAM and you want NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem. Ollama lists RTX 50-series support, and NVIDIA reported in 2026 that llama.cpp delivered up to 1.9× higher throughput on an RTX 5090 through cited kernel and speculative-decoding optimizations.

That 1.9× figure is a vendor-reported ceiling for the specified optimizations, not a universal benchmark. Your result will vary with model architecture, quantization, context length, batch size, driver, and whether the entire model stays in VRAM. If the model spills to system RAM, the transfer path can erase much of the discrete-GPU advantage.

  • Choose it for: high generation speed, CUDA-compatible tools, and models that fit in one card.

AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 128GB: capacity-first x86

AMD discusses Ryzen AI Max+ 395 configurations with 128GB of memory and specifically describes running very large models such as Meta’s Llama 4 109 Billion (17 Billion active) on a 128GB processor configuration. This makes the platform notable for buyers who need a large model in one compact x86 system rather than a discrete card with limited VRAM.

The memory is shared, so the model competes with the operating system and applications. Integrated graphics also have different bandwidth and software characteristics from a high-end discrete GPU. Expect this tier to prioritize model capacity and a compact footprint; do not assume it will match an RTX 5090 on throughput for every workload.

  • Choose it for: large-model experiments, unified memory, and x86 software compatibility.
  • Check first: the exact 128GB configuration, supported memory allocation, and whether your chosen application uses HIP, Vulkan, or another available backend.
  • Plan for: shorter contexts or closed applications if the model leaves little free memory.

High-memory Apple Silicon: quiet unified-memory inference

Apple Silicon combines CPU, GPU, and shared memory in a quiet system. Ollama describes its Apple Silicon implementation as powered by MLX in preview and built around the unified-memory architecture. llama.cpp treats Apple silicon as a first-class target, using ARM NEON, Accelerate, and Metal paths.

A high-memory configuration can therefore load models that would not fit in a small discrete GPU. The trade-off is upgradeability: Apple systems are generally not user-upgradable, so choose the memory configuration at purchase. Leave room for macOS and other applications, particularly when using long contexts.

Can a 128GB mini PC run a 120B model?

It can be feasible at a lower quantization, but 128GB does not automatically make every 120B workload practical. A nominal 4-bit 120B file is roughly 60GB of weights, leaving theoretical room for buffers, context cache, and the operating system. At 8-bit, the nominal weights alone approach 120GB, so a normal desktop session is unlikely to have enough headroom.

Use this checklist before attempting it:

  • Confirm the actual model file size, not just the advertised parameter count.
  • Reserve memory for the OS and inference runtime before choosing a context length.
  • Start with a short context and one model loaded.
  • Monitor memory while generating; increase context only after a stable run.
  • Accept that shared-memory bandwidth and integrated graphics may produce lower throughput than a discrete GPU.

If the model does not fit, llama.cpp can split work between CPU and GPU through hybrid inference. That is a compatibility fallback, not a free performance boost: moving layers or activations across the shared path can reduce speed.

Which GPU is best for local AI?

For a desktop GPU, the best default answer is the NVIDIA card with enough VRAM for your target model and a current CUDA-compatible stack. The RTX 5090 is the performance-oriented example in the available evidence because NVIDIA reports up to 1.9× llama.cpp throughput improvement with its cited optimizations and Ollama lists RTX 50-series support.

That answer changes when memory capacity is the bottleneck. A lower-speed system with 128GB of shared memory can run a model that a faster card cannot hold. Compare these four axes rather than ranking GPUs by peak specifications:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Axis Questions to ask
Usable memory How much remains after the OS, runtime, buffers, and intended context?
Bandwidth and throughput How quickly can the system move weights and cache data for your model?
Runtime maturity Does your application support the exact CUDA, HIP, Metal, MLX, or Vulkan path?
Total system constraints What are the power, noise, portability, cost, and upgradeability trade-offs?

Ollama and llama.cpp support: verify the software before buying

Ollama checklist

  1. Identify the exact GPU or integrated platform in the vendor support documentation.
  2. Install a current graphics driver or operating-system update appropriate to that hardware.
  3. Launch a small model first and confirm that the application reports hardware acceleration rather than silently using the CPU.
  4. Load your intended quantized model and watch memory use while increasing context.

On Apple Silicon, verify whether the feature you need is using the MLX path described as preview by Ollama. On AMD, check which runtime is available for your operating system; support may differ between HIP, Vulkan, and other backends.

llama.cpp checklist

llama.cpp is designed for local and cloud inference across a wide range of hardware. Its documented backends include CUDA, HIP, Metal, and CPU+GPU hybrid execution. Build or install the variant matching your hardware, then confirm the selected backend in startup output. A build that lacks the intended backend can fall back to CPU execution without changing the model file.

  • CUDA: the usual path for NVIDIA desktop GPUs.
  • HIP: a potential AMD acceleration path when the operating system and build support it.
  • Metal: the Apple GPU path in llama.cpp.
  • Hybrid CPU+GPU: a way to load models larger than VRAM, usually with a speed penalty.

A buying workflow that avoids expensive mistakes

  1. List the models you actually intend to run. Record parameter count, architecture, quantized file size, and required context. Do not shop from parameter count alone.
  2. Set a quality target. Decide whether Q4_K_M is acceptable, whether coding requires Q6 or Q8, and how much quality loss you can test and tolerate.
  3. Calculate a memory budget. Add the model file, runtime headroom, KV cache, and an operating-system reserve. Reject systems that only fit with every other application closed.
  4. Choose the hardware tier. Pick an RTX 5090-class discrete GPU for speed when it fits; a 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 or high-memory Apple Silicon system when capacity is decisive; or a 16GB machine for entry-level experimentation.
  5. Confirm backend support. Check CUDA, HIP, Metal, MLX, Vulkan, or hybrid support in the exact application and operating system you will use.
  6. Validate the complete system. Check cooling, power delivery, noise, case dimensions, memory configuration, and whether memory can be upgraded.
  7. Test progressively. Start with a small model, then your target quantization, then your full context length. Measure generation speed and watch for swapping or out-of-memory errors.

Troubleshooting common failures

The model will not load

Compare the actual file size with free memory, then reduce context length and close other applications. If the model still exceeds VRAM, enable llama.cpp hybrid offload or select a smaller quantization. Hybrid execution can make a model usable but may be substantially slower.

The system loads the model but generation is very slow

Check whether the intended accelerator backend is active. A missing CUDA, HIP, Metal, or MLX path can leave the CPU doing the work. Also check whether some layers spilled from VRAM to system memory, whether the context is unusually long, and whether thermal limits are reducing clocks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quality is disappointing after quantization

Move from an aggressive low-bit file to Q4_K_M, then to Q5, Q6, or Q8 if memory permits. Compare the same prompts and context across files; do not judge a quantizer from one unusual answer.

Memory errors appear only in long conversations

The KV cache grows with context. Lower the context limit, start a fresh session, or move to a system with more usable memory. On unified-memory hardware, close other applications before increasing context.

Practical recommendations by buyer profile

Buyer profile Most sensible starting point Reason Main compromise
Learning and occasional chat 16GB-class computer Low entry barrier for small quantized models Slow responses and limited context
Fast desktop inference GeForce RTX 5090 when the model fits its VRAM CUDA ecosystem and vendor-reported llama.cpp optimizations Model ceiling is fixed by VRAM; system power and cooling matter
Largest model in one x86 box Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 128GB Large shared-memory capacity Integrated/shared-memory throughput and backend variability
Quiet, compact, high-memory setup High-memory Apple Silicon Unified memory with Metal and MLX paths Memory is generally not upgradeable and MLX support in Ollama is described as preview

Bottom line for your purchase

Buy for the largest model and context you will use, not the model you can barely load. Memory capacity determines the ceiling; quantization determines how much model fits inside that ceiling; bandwidth and software determine how pleasant the experience is. The RTX 5090 is the clearest speed-first desktop route when its VRAM is sufficient. A 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 or high-memory Apple Silicon machine can be the better answer for models that exceed small-GPU capacity. A 16GB system remains useful for learning and modest quantized models, provided you accept slower generation and tighter limits.
