The best Google Photos alternative depends on what you want to keep: Ente Photos is the strongest fit for managed, privacy-first photo backup; Immich suits people willing to run their own server; iCloud Photos is the natural choice for Apple households; Amazon Photos can work well for eligible Prime members with mostly still photos; Proton Drive offers encrypted general-purpose storage; and OneDrive makes sense if you already use Microsoft 365. None is a universal, feature-for-feature replacement. Compare how each handles privacy, photo discovery, sharing, storage, and migration before moving your library.

Which Google Photos alternative should you choose?

Start with the part of Google Photos you most want to replace. A service built around encrypted storage may not have the same photo-focused discovery tools, and a self-hosted library gives you control while making you responsible for keeping it available and recoverable.

Service Best fit What stands out Main trade-off
Ente Photos People who want managed, privacy-first photo storage Encrypted photo backup plus photo-specific search, face recognition, sharing, and Memories Storage is limited by the plan; its AI editing is less advanced than Google Photos
Immich Technically confident users who want to host their own library Open-source photo software, automatic phone backup, and local control You provide and maintain the server, storage, security, and backups
iCloud Photos Households that primarily use Apple devices High-resolution photo storage, device space-saving versions, shared albums, and shared libraries It is most convenient within Apple’s ecosystem; advanced encryption requires checking device and account compatibility
Amazon Photos Eligible Prime members whose libraries are mostly still photos Unlimited full-resolution photo storage for eligible Prime members, according to comparison sources Video capacity is separate; it does not offer end-to-end encryption
Proton Drive People already using Proton services who prioritize encryption End-to-end encrypted general cloud storage that can also back up photos Photo discovery and organization are more general-purpose than dedicated photo libraries
OneDrive People who already get value from Microsoft 365 Automatic mobile photo and video backup alongside file storage and recovery features It is a general cloud drive, not a photo-first library

Use this table to narrow the field, then check the details that could change your decision: how much space you need, where your photos are stored, whether the service can organize them in the way you expect, and how much maintenance you are willing to do. The listed services differ not only in features but also in who controls the storage and what happens if you need to restore your library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you compare before switching?

A replacement needs to fit your habits, not just accept uploads. Think through privacy, organization, device support, sharing, storage, and recovery as separate requirements; a service can be strong in one area and a poor fit in another.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Privacy and who can access your library

End-to-end encryption is a meaningful distinction. Ente says it encrypts photos and videos before they leave your device, and Proton says its Drive files are end-to-end encrypted so only you and people you choose can access them. Amazon Photos, by contrast, is described as not offering end-to-end encryption. For iCloud Photos, Apple’s Advanced Data Protection can extend end-to-end encryption, but confirm compatibility with your devices and account before relying on it.

With Immich, you host the service yourself, which gives you control over where the library is stored. That does not make maintenance automatic: security, updates, and recovery remain your responsibility. OneDrive’s Personal Vault and recovery features are useful controls, but the available data does not establish end-to-end encryption for OneDrive; do not assume it provides the same privacy model as Ente or Proton Drive.

Photo organization versus general file storage

Ente and Immich are the most photo-centered choices in this shortlist. Ente includes search, face recognition, and Memories; Immich offers a timeline, albums, face recognition, and search. Proton Drive and OneDrive can store and back up photos, but their organization is more general-purpose than a dedicated photo library. iCloud Photos supplies photo-specific features such as shared albums and shared libraries.

Amazon Photos may be a particularly simple fit if your priority is storing still photographs and you already qualify for its Prime benefit. The supplied facts do not establish that its discovery or editing tools match Google Photos, so assess those needs separately rather than treating unlimited photo storage as a like-for-like library replacement.

Devices, sharing, and household fit

Ente supports Android, iOS, web, Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it the broadest explicitly listed cross-platform choice here. iCloud Photos is most at home in Apple households, though browser and Windows access are available. Immich has Android and iOS apps as well as web access to its server. OneDrive’s mobile app supports automatic photo and video backup. The supplied information does not give a complete device-by-device compatibility matrix for Amazon Photos or Proton Drive, so check the current app availability for the devices you rely on.

Consider how other people will use the library. Ente supports sharing, while iCloud Photos offers shared albums and shared libraries. Immich includes sharing features. These are different approaches, so test the specific workflow you need—such as sharing selected photos or maintaining a household collection—before making the new service your only copy.

How much do the alternatives cost, and how much storage do they include?

The following are the listed US plan amounts checked on October 25, 2026, where a price was available. Monthly prices are shown as monthly charges; annual equivalents are calculated only for Ente’s listed monthly plans and assume twelve months at the same rate.

Prices and storage tiers are not directly comparable without considering plan scope. Ente and Proton list distinct storage amounts for their services; Immich’s apparent zero software price does not include the server and upkeep. iCloud+ prices above are US prices, and the available data does not establish regional pricing for the other services. For Amazon Photos and OneDrive, do not infer a current price or storage allowance from the information in this comparison.

Is Ente Photos the best private Google Photos alternative?

Ente is the strongest managed option here if you want photo-specific features with encryption and do not want to maintain a server. It combines automatic backup with search, face recognition, sharing, and Memories, while its apps cover mobile, desktop, and web use.

Why it may fit

  • Ente says photos and videos are encrypted before leaving the device.
  • It includes photo-oriented tools rather than acting only as a general file store.
  • It supports Android, iOS, web, Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • It documents a desktop-app workflow for importing a Google Takeout export.

What to weigh

Ente’s storage is capped by the selected plan, so estimate your library size before migrating. Its AI editing is less advanced than Google Photos, which matters if editing suggestions are a core part of your workflow. Ente also offers optional self-hosting, but that is distinct from its managed service: anyone choosing to host it should assess the additional operational responsibilities rather than assuming the hosted and self-hosted experiences are interchangeable.

Is Immich a good self-hosted alternative?

Immich is a strong choice if you want to host a photo library yourself and are comfortable maintaining the server and backups. Its software is open source and free, but the full cost includes the equipment and time needed to keep the system secure, available, and recoverable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Immich includes

Immich provides Android and iOS apps, web access, automatic phone backup, a timeline, albums, sharing, face recognition, and search. It is designed around a self-hosted library, so the data location and server are under your control rather than being part of a managed cloud plan.

What you must provide

  • A NAS or other server capable of running the software, plus storage disks.
  • Electricity and ongoing attention to updates and security.
  • A recovery plan and independent backups of the library.

A running Immich server is one copy of your photos, not a complete backup strategy. If the server or its disks fail, the library could be lost unless a separate backup exists. Immich links official backup and restore documentation, but no independent migration test is established here; verify the restore process for your own setup rather than relying on a working server alone.

Is iCloud Photos the best option for an Apple household?

For a household already organized around Apple devices, iCloud Photos is a convenient fit: it stores high-resolution photos, can keep space-saving versions on devices, and supports shared albums and shared libraries. Apple says iCloud automatically keeps photos, files, and more backed up and available across devices.

Apple also offers browser access and Windows access, though the service is most naturally integrated with Apple devices. If end-to-end encryption is part of your reason for switching, look at Advanced Data Protection and confirm that your account and devices are compatible before relying on it. Its iCloud+ US storage tiers range from 50 GB to 12 TB in the prices listed above.

Is Amazon Photos worth using if you have Prime?

Amazon Photos is worth considering for an eligible Prime member whose library is mostly still photographs. Comparison sources describe unlimited full-resolution photo storage for eligible members, but video capacity is separate and the service does not provide end-to-end encryption.

Do not interpret unlimited photo storage as unlimited storage for every kind of media. Check current Prime eligibility and terms, particularly if you have a large video collection. Current Prime and non-Prime pricing was not verified for this comparison, so confirm the applicable cost directly before choosing it on price alone.

Should you use Proton Drive or OneDrive for photo backup?

Choose Proton Drive if encrypted general-purpose cloud storage matters more than photo-library features and you already use Proton. Choose OneDrive if you already rely on Microsoft 365 and want photo and video backup alongside your other files.

Proton Drive: encryption first

Proton says that only you and people you choose can access files stored in Drive, not even Proton. The service can back up photos, but its discovery and organization are more general-purpose than those in Ente or Immich. Its free and paid storage tiers are listed above; note that Proton Unlimited, Duo, and Family are named plans with different capacities, not just larger Drive-only tiers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OneDrive: useful within Microsoft 365

Microsoft says OneDrive keeps files, photos, and videos backed up and available across devices. Its mobile app supports automatic photo and video backup, Personal Vault, ransomware detection, file recovery, and curated photo collections. Those are useful cloud-storage and recovery features, but OneDrive remains a general drive rather than a dedicated photo-first library. Its value depends in part on whether Microsoft 365 already fits your needs; the facts here do not establish a current OneDrive price or storage allowance.

How do you move a Google Photos library without losing important details?

Export the original library before changing services, keep an independent copy, and verify the result in the destination. Migration can involve more than getting image files to appear: check dates, locations, albums, metadata, and whether videos play correctly.

  1. Export the original library. Create a Google Takeout export and keep the original export intact. Do not make the destination service your only copy during the move.
  2. Make a separate backup. Keep an independent copy of the export somewhere other than the new service or its server. For a self-hosted setup, the server itself is not the second copy.
  3. Choose an import route. Ente documents importing a Google Takeout export through its desktop app. For other services, the information here does not establish an equivalent Google Takeout workflow, so check their current import options before beginning.
  4. Check metadata and organization. Spot-check representative files, including older and newer photos, photos with location information, and albums. Confirm dates and locations in the destination rather than assuming that a successful upload preserved every detail.
  5. Test videos and sharing. Play a selection of videos and inspect how albums and shared content appear. A file being present does not prove that every part of the original library has transferred as expected.
  6. Keep the original until verification is complete. Do not delete the Google library until you have checked the new copy and a second backup.

Immich has official backup and restore documentation, but no independent migration test is established here. For any service, treat migration as a verification task, not just an upload: compare a sample of the destination with the original before changing the status of your source library.

Which alternative is right for your situation?

Make the choice by prioritizing the requirement you cannot compromise on, then test the second-most important one before committing your full library.

  • Choose Ente if you want managed encrypted photo backup, broad platform support, and photo-oriented organization without running your own server.
  • Choose Immich if you want control over a self-hosted library and can take responsibility for hardware, security, updates, and independent backups.
  • Choose iCloud Photos if your household primarily uses Apple devices and shared albums or libraries are important.
  • Consider Amazon Photos if you are an eligible Prime member and mainly need full-resolution still-photo storage.
  • Choose Proton Drive if encrypted general cloud storage is the priority and photo-specific discovery is secondary.
  • Choose OneDrive if you already use Microsoft 365 and want photo backup within a broader file-storage setup.

Before moving everything, try the service with a small, representative selection of your library. That reveals whether its app, search, sharing, and import behavior suit your household without putting the original collection at risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use two photo backup services at the same time?

Yes. Keeping the existing library while you trial a second service can make it easier to compare search, sharing, and device behavior before committing. Decide which copy is authoritative and account for duplicate storage if both services upload the same originals.

Will a Google Photos export preserve my albums exactly?

Do not assume that every destination recreates albums in the same way as the original library. Check album contents and organization in the new service as part of your migration review; the available import information only documents a Google Takeout workflow for Ente.

Does end-to-end encryption mean I can skip backups?

No. Encryption controls who can read stored data; it does not ensure that deleted files, a lost account, or failed hardware can be recovered. Keep a separate backup and make sure you understand how recovery works for the service you choose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I access Immich when I am away from home?

Immich includes web access to its server, but remote availability depends on how you configure and secure your own server. The service’s inclusion of a web interface does not by itself establish that remote access is enabled or safe in a particular setup.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
