If you want to find restaurants, attractions, and useful places—not just get directions—Apple Maps is the best-supported Google Maps alternative for nearby discovery based on its documented search categories, movable search area, place details, filters, Look Around, and curated Guides. Availability varies by region, so check whether its nearby suggestions work where you live or travel. Google Maps itself remains a strong all-in-one option, while Yelp may complement either app for local-business discovery.
What to look for in a place-discovery app
Finding a place is a different task from navigating to one. For exploration, useful capabilities include nearby categories, the ability to search a different part of the map, practical details on place cards, and ways to assess or save a spot. Local availability matters too: a feature listed by a service may not be offered in every city or country.

Google Maps is the baseline rather than a weak option to replace by default. Its current App Store listing describes local-place and activity search, reviews and photos, restaurant filters, saved lists, and trip-planning features such as hotel booking and reservations. The listing cautions that some features are unavailable in some countries or cities.
Apple Maps: the strongest documented alternative
Apple Maps has the clearest documented set of tools for finding places and exploring an area. Apple describes nearby categories including restaurants, gas stations, coffee shops, hotels, bars, fast food, groceries, and shopping centers. Search results can update when you move the map, letting you look beyond your current location.
#1 Best Overall
Search nearby or in another area
- Open Maps and choose a nearby category, or search for a place type such as “playgrounds” or “parks.” You can also ask Siri for nearby places.
- To look elsewhere, drag the map to the area you want to explore. Nearby results update for the area shown.
- Open a result’s place card to review available details before deciding whether to visit.
These steps reflect Apple’s iPhone support instructions for finding nearby places. Apple says nearby suggestions are not available in all countries or regions.
Compare options with filters and place cards
Apple describes restaurant filters for cuisine, price range, and takeout. Place cards may include an address, hours, website, phone number, price range, photos, accepted payment methods, and whether dogs are allowed. Which details appear depends on the place and what is available in Maps; do not assume every card will contain every field.

Preview and plan an area
Look Around provides street-level views in select cities, which can help you preview a destination. Apple also says Maps offers more than 1,000 curated Guides in cities around the world. That is Apple’s stated feature count, not an independent assessment of the Guides’ quality or usefulness.
In select U.S. cities, Apple describes a “Local Lists” flow with suggestions informed by what people view, share, and interact with on Apple Maps. Both the city restriction and the feature’s availability are important: it is not a universal source of recommendations.

When Yelp, HERE WeGo, or OpenStreetMap may be worth checking
Yelp for local-business categories
Yelp is a plausible complement if your search is about local businesses such as restaurants, dentists, bars, beauty salons, or doctors. The available official information does not support a broader claim about how its map exploration, filters, or coverage compare with Apple Maps or Google Maps.
HERE WeGo and OpenStreetMap for further evaluation
HERE WeGo and OpenStreetMap are options to investigate, but the available official-site information does not substantiate current nearby-search, review, filtering, or exploration capabilities. Check the current service in your destination and confirm it supports the specific discovery features you want before relying on it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose based on where and how you plan to explore
- Choose Apple Maps if you want a documented nearby-search workflow with movable search areas, restaurant filters, detailed place cards, and area previews or curated Guides—provided those features are available in your region.
- Stay with Google Maps if its combination of search, reviews, photos, restaurant filters, saved lists, and trip-planning tools already serves your needs. Check local availability for particular features.
- Add Yelp as a complement when the search is specifically about local-business categories, while verifying the functionality you need in the current service.
- Evaluate HERE WeGo or OpenStreetMap directly if you are considering them for discovery; the information cited here is not enough to recommend them for that job.
Before a trip, search the destination itself and test the actions that matter to you: finding a category, shifting the search area, opening place details, and previewing or saving a place. That makes regional gaps visible before you depend on a feature in an unfamiliar area.
