The best free video editor depends less on the word “free” than on what you need to export. DaVinci Resolve 20 is the strongest choice for serious editing, color correction, visual effects, and audio. Clipchamp is easier for quick Windows projects, while iMovie remains the cleanest option for Mac users who do not need a professional timeline.

The recommendations below are based on the 2025 testing covered in the referenced review, including interface quality, editing workflow, effects, watermarks, and free-plan restrictions. The important limitations are included because a free editor that exports only at 720p—or blocks a project because it contains one premium asset—may not be suitable for your work.

Best free video editing software at a glance

Software Best for Windows macOS Main free limitation
DaVinci Resolve 20 Advanced editing and the best overall feature set Yes Yes Some advanced tools and higher-end output require Studio
Clipchamp Beginners and fast browser/Windows edits Yes Browser Free exports stop at 1080p; premium assets block export
Shotcut Open-source general editing Yes Yes Less approachable interface
Kdenlive Traditional multi-track timeline editing Yes Yes Builds and features can differ between platforms
iMovie Simple Mac projects No Yes Fewer advanced controls
CapCut Desktop Short-form and social video Yes Yes Pro assets, effects, settings, and templates can restrict exports
Lightworks Free Learning a professional-style editor Yes Yes 720p export limit

1. DaVinci Resolve 20 — best free video editor overall

DaVinci Resolve 20 is the best choice if you want one application that can handle a complete production workflow. Its editing, color, visual-effects, motion-graphics, and audio tools are divided into dedicated pages, so it can serve both a simple YouTube edit and a much more demanding project.

Resolve runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The free edition is unusually capable, but it is not the same as DaVinci Resolve Studio. The free version commonly supports output up to Ultra HD 4K at 60 frames per second, while Studio is needed for higher resolutions and frame rates along with some advanced AI tools, formats, and professional effects.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

How to export in Resolve

  1. For a straightforward export, choose File > Quick Export.
  2. For detailed control, open the Deliver page.
  3. Choose the format, codec, resolution, frame rate, and destination.
  4. Click Add to Render Queue, then start the render.

Resolve 20 improved the Quick Export dialog and added export and codec options to the Deliver page. The trade-off is hardware demand. Fusion compositions, noise reduction, complex color grades, and 4K footage can overwhelm a modest laptop. If playback stutters, use optimized media or lower the timeline preview quality rather than assuming the final export is broken.

Choose Resolve if: you want the most room to grow and have a reasonably powerful computer. Skip it if: you only need to trim phone clips and add a title.

2. Clipchamp — easiest editor for Windows and browser users

Clipchamp is the quickest recommendation for beginners. It is available as a Windows app and through the web, so it is not accurate to describe it as browser-only. Its interface is built around a simple media bin, preview window, timeline, text, transitions, effects, and stock media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The personal free plan includes unlimited exports without a Clipchamp watermark, but the maximum free video resolution is 1080p. The 4K option belongs to paid Microsoft 365 plans rather than the current free personal tier.

How to export in Clipchamp

  1. Click Export in the top-right corner.
  2. Choose 480p, 720p, or 1080p.
  3. Wait for the video to process, then save or share the result.

Clipchamp saves personal-project progress automatically; there is no conventional Save button. Its most confusing restriction is premium content. A project can be free to edit but impossible to export if it contains premium stock footage, music, or features. Remove the premium item or upgrade the account.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model)
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

Choose Clipchamp if: you need a clean 1080p video with minimal setup. Skip it if: you need 4K delivery, deep audio controls, or advanced color work.

3. Shotcut — best open-source general editor

Shotcut is a free, open-source editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It uses a conventional timeline and supports native editing without requiring every clip to be placed inside a proprietary media library. That makes it practical for users who want direct access to their files and a broad set of export controls.

Shotcut is less polished for first-time editors than Clipchamp or iMovie. Panels and filters are powerful but not always obvious, and the interface can feel technical before you learn where its controls live. It compensates with a wide range of formats, presets, filters, audio options, and custom export settings.

The 2025 review covered the 25.03 branch, including features such as Subtitles > Generate Text on Timeline and additional vertical, 360-degree, and color-space controls. Do not confuse that tested branch with Shotcut’s newer releases: the official download page later listed version 26.6.25, released June 25, 2026.

How to export in Shotcut

  1. Open the Export panel.
  2. Select a suitable preset, such as an H.264/MP4 option.
  3. Adjust resolution, frame rate, codec, or bitrate if needed.
  4. Choose the output file and start the export.

Check compatibility before installing on an older Mac. The last release supporting macOS 11 is 24.11.17, while macOS 10.14 and 10.15 require the older 24.01.31 release. Macs from 2013 or earlier may also experience video-preview color problems related to the Metal transition. A reported 2025 test issue involved repeated crashes of the voiceover tool on Mac; that should be treated as a test result, not proof that the current release has the same bug.

4. Kdenlive — best open-source traditional timeline

Kdenlive is a strong alternative to Shotcut for editors who prefer a more traditional multi-track workflow. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with tools for multiple video and audio tracks, transitions, effects, titles, subtitles, and proxy media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the stable release for ordinary work. KDE labels nightly installers as unstable and intended for testing, and Windows, macOS, and Linux packaging can differ. The 2025 branches relevant to this comparison were 25.04 and 25.08.

How to render a Kdenlive video

  1. Choose File > Render, or press Ctrl+Enter.
  2. Set the output filename and location.
  3. Select a preset such as MP4-H264/AAC.
  4. Click Render to File.

Kdenlive calls the final export “rendering.” The project file is not a playable video; it stores your edit decisions, effects, timeline, and references to the source media. If you move the original clips, Kdenlive will ask you to locate them again. Use File > Archive Project when transferring a project to another computer. Proxy clips can make editing smoother, and final rendering uses the original media rather than the lower-resolution proxies.

5. iMovie — best simple video editor for Mac

iMovie is the easiest choice for Mac owners making family videos, school projects, travel edits, or straightforward social clips. It has fewer advanced controls than Resolve, Shotcut, or Kdenlive, but that is also why it is quick to learn.

iMovie is Mac-only in this comparison. It is not a Windows PC editor. To bring footage into a project, click Import in the toolbar. If the button is hidden, click Media, then Import. Select the source device and event, then choose Import All or Import Selected.

  • IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
  • POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

To add footage, drag a clip from the event browser to the timeline. To select only part of a clip, hold R while dragging across the desired section, then drag that selection to the timeline.

How to export from iMovie

  1. Choose File > Share > File.
  2. Set the format, resolution, quality, and compression.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Choose a filename and location, then click Save.

iMovie can export a 4K movie at its native resolution when the source and project support it. If you store an iMovie library externally, avoid Time Machine volumes, ExFAT, FAT32, and NTFS drives, as well as third-party cloud folders. Apple also warns against Desktop or Documents locations when iCloud Desktop & Documents is enabled.

6. CapCut Desktop — best for short-form social video

CapCut Desktop is designed around fast edits for TikTok-style videos, Shorts, Reels, and other social content. Its strengths include accessible text animation, effects, captions, templates, and social-friendly aspect ratios. It runs on Windows and macOS.

CapCut’s free tier needs more careful checking than its marketing often suggests. Export availability can depend on Pro assets, AI tools, templates, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and watermark settings. Free accounts may encounter restrictions on 4K export, and unrestricted 4K is associated with Pro. A video can also gain branding from a template, stock asset, or default CapCut ending clip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to export without an unnecessary CapCut outro

  1. Inspect the end of the timeline before exporting.
  2. Select and delete the default CapCut ending clip if one was added.
  3. Check the timeline for Pro assets or effects.
  4. Click Export in the top-right corner.
  5. Review the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate options available to your account.

Desktop does not include the full mobile community-template ecosystem. It supports a more limited collection of official or built-in templates, while discovery and sharing are primarily mobile features. Large projects, 4K media, complex effects, low storage, and limited RAM or GPU resources can also cause export failures. CapCut’s stated minimums include Windows 10 64-bit or later, macOS Monterey 12 or later, 4GB RAM, and approximately 10GB of free storage.

7. Lightworks Free — useful for learning a professional-style editor

Lightworks Free runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and has a workflow influenced by professional editing software. It can be useful if your priority is learning an editor that feels closer to a studio tool than a template-driven consumer app.

Its decisive drawback is the free plan’s 720p export limit. It should not be presented as a free 1080p editor. The free version also requires account activation and internet access during setup or licensing workflows. Paid editions unlock additional export options.

That makes Lightworks reasonable for learning, drafts, or low-resolution publishing, but a poor first choice for modern 1080p or 4K delivery. Resolve, Shotcut, or Kdenlive are better fits when output resolution matters.

You are new to editing Clipchamp Simple workflow and clean free 1080p export
You want open-source software Shotcut Cross-platform, flexible, and not tied to a proprietary library

You make social-first short videos CapCut Desktop Strong captions, effects, templates, and vertical-video tools
You want to study a professional-style interface Lightworks Free Useful workflow practice, despite the 720p export ceiling

What to check before calling an editor “free”

  • Export resolution: Clipchamp stops at 1080p on its free plan, while Lightworks Free stops at 720p.
  • Watermarks and branding: CapCut may add an outro or restrict exports when Pro assets, templates, or certain settings are used.
  • Hardware requirements: Resolve and effects-heavy CapCut projects can need substantially more CPU, GPU, RAM, and temporary storage than basic editors.
  • Project portability: Keep source clips in stable locations and archive projects before moving them to another computer.
  • Asset licensing: Free software does not automatically mean that stock video, music, fonts, templates, or AI-generated assets are cleared for commercial use. Check each asset’s license before publishing paid or client work.

FAQ

What is the best completely free video editing software in 2025?

DaVinci Resolve 20 is the best overall free option for users who want advanced editing, color, visual effects, and audio tools. Its free edition still has Studio-only features and output restrictions, so Clipchamp, Shotcut, or iMovie may be better for simpler projects.

Which free video editor works on both Windows and Mac?

DaVinci Resolve 20, Shotcut, Kdenlive, CapCut Desktop, and Lightworks Free run on both Windows and macOS. Clipchamp has a Windows app and a web version usable on Mac. iMovie is Mac-only.

Which free video editor does not add a watermark?

Clipchamp’s current free plan does not add a Clipchamp watermark, provided the project contains no premium assets or features. CapCut exports can also be clean, but a default outro, template, stock asset, Pro feature, or export setting may add branding or block export.

Can free video editing software export 4K video?

Yes, some can. DaVinci Resolve’s free edition commonly supports up to Ultra HD 4K at 60fps, and iMovie can export 4K when the source and project support it. Clipchamp’s free personal plan is limited to 1080p, Lightworks Free is limited to 720p, and CapCut’s 4K availability depends on the account, project assets, and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

DaVinci Resolve 20 is the best free video editor for most serious PC and Mac users, provided their computer can handle it. Choose Clipchamp for the shortest path to a clean 1080p edit, iMovie for uncomplicated Mac projects, Shotcut or Kdenlive for open-source editing, and CapCut Desktop for social-first videos. Treat Lightworks Free mainly as a learning tool because its 720p export limit is restrictive for current publishing.
