For free same-PC play, start with Brawlhalla. Its Steam listing explicitly supports shared or split-screen multiplayer, controllers, Remote Play Together, and up to eight players locally or online. If everyone can use separate computers, Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, Sven Co-op, Unturned, and We Were Here cover coordinated shooting, mission puzzles, survival sandbox play, and two-person communication puzzles. They are not interchangeable: only Brawlhalla is verified here as a same-PC/local match, while the other four are primarily online or LAN games. Steam Remote Play Together can bridge that gap for supported local games by letting one person host and invite remote friends.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Free plan / price | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brawlhalla | Same-PC parties and quick competitive rounds | Local/shared-screen, online and Remote Play Together; up to 8 locally or online | Free-to-play; optional All Legends Pack and other paid packs | Oct 2026 |
| Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop | Coordinated squad shooting | Online and LAN co-op; up to 8 according to a current comparison guide | Free base game; additional items appear on the Steam listing | Oct 2026 |
| Sven Co-op | Mission-based combat and puzzles | Online and LAN co-op; exact maximum not stated on the primary listing | Free; mature violence and gore warning | Oct 2026 |
| Unturned | Open-world survival, building and exploration | Online and LAN co-op in a zombie-survival sandbox | Free-to-play with in-app purchases; developer describes paid content as cosmetic | Oct 2026 |
| We Were Here | Exactly two friends solving communication puzzles | Online co-op; both players are separated and must share clues | Free first game in a series; later entries and bundles may cost money | Oct 2026 |
The order is a practical starting point, not a claim that one genre is universally better. Brawlhalla is first because it is the only option in this group whose Steam description clearly verifies same-PC local play. The remaining positions reflect how directly each game serves common online or LAN use cases.
Which free Steam game is the closest match for local co-op?
Brawlhalla is the clearest free couch-play alternative. Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft describe it as a platform fighter for up to eight players online or local, and the Steam feature list includes shared/split-screen co-op, shared/split-screen multiplayer, controller support, and Remote Play Together.

Why Brawlhalla fits one-PC play
Local/shared-screen support means several people can play from the same computer and display rather than needing separate Steam installations. Plug in compatible gamepads, launch the game, and add players through its local multiplayer flow. Because the listing also names Remote Play Together, friends in different locations can join a host’s local session through Steam instead of buying or installing the game themselves.

The “up to eight” figure is the publisher’s Steam-description claim from 2017. It describes the advertised local or online ceiling, not a guarantee that every arena, mode, controller layout, or host computer will handle eight players comfortably. More players also mean less screen space and more crowded matches, so a smaller group may have a better view and easier setup.
What “free” includes
The base game is free-to-play, but the Steam listing also shows an All Legends Pack and other paid packs. You can start a local match without buying those optional items. Treat the free entry as access to the game, not as a promise that every character, cosmetic, or bundle is unlocked.
What are the best online or LAN alternatives?
If friends are using separate PCs, these games offer stronger campaign or sandbox choices than a same-screen fighter. Check each game’s connection model before inviting people: online and LAN co-op are not the same as couch co-op.

1. Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop — best for a coordinated squad
Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is a free cooperative top-down shooter. Its Steam description explicitly lists online and LAN co-op, making it suitable when everyone has a separate machine on the internet or the same local network.
A current 2026 comparison guide identifies an eight-player ceiling, which makes Reactive Drop the practical larger-group action choice in this shortlist. The official Steam listing confirms the co-op modes but does not state that maximum in the extracted description, so regard eight as the guide’s classification rather than an independently verified Steam figure.
How a session plays
The appeal is coordination: players move as a squad, divide attention, and deal with threats together rather than taking turns in a versus arena. It suits friends who want a mission with shared objectives and active combat. Voice chat is useful for callouts, but unlike We Were Here, the game’s premise does not require constant verbal clue exchange.
Free-status and setup notes
The base game is free. The Steam page also shows additional items, so verify what is included before assuming every listed add-on is part of the free download. For LAN play, all computers must be on the same network and running compatible game versions; for online play, each friend needs their own Steam account and installation.
2. Sven Co-op — best for classic missions and puzzles
Sven Co-op centers on players working together against computer-controlled enemies and solving puzzles as a team. Its Steam listing supports online and LAN co-op and presents the game as a free experience.

This is the pick for a group that wants a sequence of authored missions rather than an endless sandbox. Puzzles and enemy encounters reward a team that stays together, experiments, and communicates about switches, routes, and hazards. The primary listing used here does not establish an exact player maximum, so do not promise a specific group size when organizing a session.
What to expect from the tone
The store page carries a mature violence and gore warning. That matters if children will be present or if your group wants a lighter party game. Sven Co-op’s older mission-based design can also feel less immediately familiar than a modern arena game; allow time for everyone to learn movement, objectives, and server joining.
Online versus LAN
Online co-op is the straightforward choice for friends in different homes. LAN co-op is useful for a local network, but it still requires each participant to run the game on a separate computer. Neither mode should be described as one-screen couch co-op.
3. Unturned — best for an open-ended survival evening
Unturned is a free-to-play open-world zombie-survival sandbox with scavenging, hunting, shelter construction, exploration, and cooperation. Steam lists online and LAN co-op, so it works for groups that prefer a shared world to a fixed campaign.
Choose it when the activity you want is “let’s build a base and see what happens,” not “finish a short series of missions.” The open structure gives players room to split up, gather resources, defend a shelter, or explore together. That freedom also means the group must set its own goals; a session can feel directionless if nobody decides what to build or where to go.
How its free model works
The game is free-to-play with in-app purchases. Smartly Dressed Games describes the paid content as cosmetic and says it does not use pay-to-win mechanics. Cosmetic purchases can still change the amount someone spends, so agree in advance that the free base game is sufficient for your group.
Who should skip it
Unturned is a poor fit for a quick ten-minute gathering or for friends who want everyone on one screen. Its survival systems and open map reward longer sessions and separate computers. If your group wants immediate rounds with almost no planning, Brawlhalla is a better match.

This is not a general party game and not a four-player option. The researched guide identifies a working microphone as a practical requirement because communication is the central mechanic. A headset with a microphone can make clue-sharing clearer, but the important requirement is reliable two-way voice communication rather than a particular brand or accessory.
Why the two-player limit matters
Each player receives different information, so adding spectators or extra teammates does not solve a puzzle; it can make communication harder. Pick We Were Here when two friends want a focused outing built around listening and precise descriptions. It is especially effective when both players enjoy puzzles and are comfortable saying “turn left,” “read the symbol,” or “I see three levers” repeatedly.
Free entry, larger series
The free listing is one entry in a broader series. Later games and bundles can be paid, so “free We Were Here” refers to the particular free title, not to every game in the franchise.
What is the difference between local, LAN, online, and Remote Play Together?
Local/shared-screen means multiple players use one host computer and display; LAN means separate computers on one local network; online means separate computers connected over the internet; Remote Play Together streams a supported local multiplayer session from one host. Confusing these terms is the most common reason a supposed couch co-op recommendation disappoints.
Same-PC local or couch co-op
Local play places the players in front of one computer, usually sharing the screen. You need enough controllers or input devices for everyone and a game that explicitly supports local or split-screen play. In this shortlist, Brawlhalla is the verified match.
LAN co-op
LAN co-op connects separate computers on the same home, school, or event network. Each player normally needs their own computer, Steam account, and game installation. Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, Sven Co-op, and Unturned list LAN support; that does not turn them into one-PC games.
Online co-op
Online play connects separate machines over the internet. It is the normal arrangement for We Were Here and is also available in the listings for Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, Sven Co-op, Unturned, and Brawlhalla. Connection quality, matchmaking, and each game’s invite flow determine how smooth the session is.

Valve’s Steam Remote Play documentation describes a host launching a supported local multiplayer game and inviting friends to join remotely. Valve says the feature can support up to four players, or more with fast connections, but that is a platform capability caveat rather than a promise for every game. The host’s computer renders the game and streams it to guests, so host hardware, upload bandwidth, latency, and controller forwarding affect the experience.

For a Remote Play session, the host should launch the game, open the Steam overlay, invite friends through the Remote Play Together option, and confirm that each guest’s controller is recognized. Guests do not necessarily need to own the game, but the game must support the feature and the host must be able to run it well. If input or video quality is poor, moving to a true online title with separate installations can be more reliable.
How should you choose by group size and session type?
Start with the number of people and where they are sitting, then choose the style of play. This avoids treating every free co-op listing as a substitute for couch gaming.
One PC, two to eight people
Choose Brawlhalla. It is the only option here with an explicit same-PC/shared-screen claim and an advertised ceiling of eight local or online players. Use controllers where possible, and expect the screen to become busier as the group grows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTwo people in different homes
Choose We Were Here if both players want a communication puzzle and can use microphones. Choose Sven Co-op for mission-based combat and puzzles, or Brawlhalla for short competitive rounds. Your choice depends more on desired session style than on the free label.
Four or more friends wanting action
Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is the practical first stop because the current comparison guide classifies it as supporting up to eight players and the official listing confirms online and LAN co-op. Brawlhalla also advertises up to eight, but its arena-fighter format is competitive rather than a cooperative campaign.
A group that wants a long shared world
Pick Unturned. Its sandbox systems support scavenging, shelter building, exploration, and self-directed goals. Agree on a server, difficulty expectations, and whether cosmetic purchases are off-limits before starting.
What equipment and prerequisites do you need?
Requirements vary by connection mode, but a short checklist prevents most avoidable delays.
- For Brawlhalla on one PC: use enough compatible controllers for the planned player count, confirm that the operating system recognizes each device, and test local player assignment before friends arrive.
- For LAN games: connect every computer to the same network, install the same game version, and allow the game through the operating system’s network firewall when prompted.
- For online games: each participant needs a Steam account, the free game installed, and a stable internet connection. Use the game’s invite or lobby system rather than assuming a LAN lobby will appear online.
- For We Were Here: provide a working microphone and a quiet enough environment to hear descriptions. A headset is optional but can reduce echo and missed clues.
- For Remote Play Together: the host needs to run the game locally, invite guests through Steam, and accept that streaming quality depends on the host’s upload connection and latency.
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
The game is not showing local multiplayer
Confirm that you launched a mode labeled local, shared-screen, or split-screen rather than an online lobby. In Brawlhalla, connect controllers before assigning players and check that each device appears in the game’s input settings. If the title only lists online or LAN co-op, it cannot provide the one-PC experience you expected.

Friends cannot join a LAN lobby
Verify that every computer is on the same network and running the same game version. Temporarily check firewall permissions for the game, avoid guest Wi-Fi networks that isolate devices, and restart the host lobby after all players are connected. If the network blocks discovery, use the game’s direct-connect or online option when available.
Remote Play video or input feels delayed
Because the host streams the game, reduce other network traffic, move the host to a wired connection if possible, and lower streaming quality in Steam’s Remote Play settings. Invite fewer guests and close demanding background applications. If latency remains high, use a game with native online co-op instead of forcing a local title through Remote Play.
We Were Here players keep missing clues
Check microphone permissions in the operating system and Steam, select the correct input device, and use headphones to prevent echo. Establish a vocabulary before starting: describe colors, shapes, positions, and the order of symbols rather than saying only “over there.” The game is intentionally dependent on communication, so unclear audio is a gameplay problem, not merely a comfort issue.

Separate base access from optional content. Brawlhalla lists paid packs, Unturned lists in-app purchases, and the We Were Here series includes paid later entries. You can decline those purchases unless a particular mode or item is explicitly marked as paid.
How were these recommendations selected?
The shortlist uses the connection modes, player-count information, genre descriptions, and free-status details stated on the relevant Steam listings and the named current comparison guide. Priority went to a verified same-PC match first, then to clear online or LAN alternatives with distinct session types: squad shooting, mission puzzles, survival sandbox play, and two-player communication puzzles.
Player counts are quoted with their source’s limits. Brawlhalla’s up-to-eight figure comes from its Steam description; Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop’s up-to-eight classification comes from the 2026 comparison guide, while its Steam listing confirms online and LAN co-op without stating a maximum. No universal “best” score is claimed because the games solve different problems.
Which game should you download first?
Download Brawlhalla when everyone will share one PC or when you want the simplest Remote Play Together experiment. Choose Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop for a larger coordinated action group, Sven Co-op for classic mission-and-puzzle teamwork, Unturned for a self-directed survival world, and We Were Here for exactly two friends who enjoy talking through clues. Check the Steam listing again before installing: features, optional purchases, controller tags, and regional presentation can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play these free Steam games with friends who do not own them?
Steam Remote Play Together can let invited friends join a supported local multiplayer game hosted by one owner, so guests may not need to purchase the title. Native online or LAN games generally require each participant to install the free game and use their own Steam account.
Is Remote Play Together the same as online multiplayer?
No. Remote Play Together streams one host’s local session to guests, while native online multiplayer gives each player a separate game connection. Remote Play is convenient for a supported couch game, but it is more sensitive to the host’s hardware, upload speed, and latency.
Which option is best for children or a mixed-age group?
Brawlhalla is the simplest family-room starting point because it is a quick platform fighter and supports shared-screen play. Sven Co-op carries a mature violence and gore warning, while the other games involve survival, zombies, or communication-intensive puzzles that may suit older players better.
Do all of these games support cross-platform play?
The supplied listings establish Steam PC connection modes, not universal cross-platform support. Before inviting someone on a different platform, check that game’s current Steam page and platform-specific documentation for an explicit cross-play statement.
