For editing files offline with a free desktop suite, start with LibreOffice or ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors. LibreOffice offers six office components; ONLYOFFICE explicitly says its free desktop editors can work on local documents without an internet connection and lists Microsoft Office formats among those supported. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides can work offline too, but only after browser setup and file preparation.
Which free Office alternative works offline?
The key distinction is whether the software edits files directly on your computer or depends on a browser profile and prior syncing. LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors are installed desktop options for working with local documents. Google’s offline mode is a configured browser feature, not a substitute for a desktop suite that is ready to open local files without preparation.
| Option | How offline editing works | What it offers | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| LibreOffice | Installed desktop suite for editing local files. | The Document Foundation describes it as open-source and lists Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, and Math. | The cited product information does not establish exact Microsoft Office rendering or feature parity. Test important files before switching. |
| ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors | ONLYOFFICE says its free desktop editors can edit local documents offline. | Windows, Linux, and macOS; document, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and PDF tools. The vendor lists DOCX, ODT, XLSX, ODS, CSV, PPTX, and ODP support. | Format support is a vendor claim, not proof that complex files will render or behave identically to Microsoft Office. |
| Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides | Enable offline access in a supported browser while connected and make files available offline. | A conditional choice for people already using Google’s tools who can prepare documents before losing connectivity. | Requires browser setup, a suitable browser profile, initial connectivity, and enough storage; sync or administrator restrictions can also interfere. |
| WPS Office | Offline operation is not established by the cited product page. | The vendor presents downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux and lists Writer, Spreadsheet, Presentation, and PDF tools. | Confirm offline behavior and current free-tier limits, ads, and paid features before relying on it offline. |
Choose between LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE
Choose LibreOffice for a broad, open-source suite
LibreOffice’s six tools cover more than documents, spreadsheets, and presentations: Draw handles diagrams and graphics, Base is its database tool, and Math is for formula editing. That breadth may suit someone who wants a general-purpose desktop suite rather than a Word replacement alone. The Document Foundation’s product page describes LibreOffice as open-source and lists these components.
Choose ONLYOFFICE when its format workflow fits
ONLYOFFICE explicitly describes Desktop Editors as able to edit local documents offline. Its listed platforms are Windows, Linux, and macOS, and its format list includes common Microsoft Office and OpenDocument file types. That makes it a clear candidate if you want a desktop editor and regularly exchange DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX files.

- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.

Neither the breadth of LibreOffice’s suite nor ONLYOFFICE’s format list proves that a particular file will look or behave exactly as it does in Microsoft Office. If a document depends on macros, unusual fonts, complex page layouts, or tracked changes, compatibility needs to be checked with that file.
Use Google files offline only after preparing them
Google’s offline editing requires setup before you lose connectivity. Google’s instructions specify using Chrome or Edge outside private browsing, enabling its offline feature, and ensuring the files you need are available offline. The service can save recently opened files for offline use, and users can also mark specific files for offline access.

- While connected to the internet, open Google’s offline editing instructions and follow the setup for your browser.
- Use Chrome or Edge in a regular browser window, not private browsing, and install the Google Docs Offline extension as directed.
- Enable offline access in the browser profile you intend to use. If you share a computer, verify that you are signed in to the correct account and profile.
- Make sure required files are available offline. Google explains how to mark specific documents for offline access; do not assume every file in Drive has been downloaded.
- Before relying on the setup for travel or an outage, disconnect from the internet and confirm that the files you need open and can be edited.
Offline availability can be affected by browser storage, administrator policy, and sync or file-size problems. Google’s instructions explain the feature and its setup; they do not make it a plug-and-play desktop editor for arbitrary local files.
Check compatibility with your own Office files
Before moving important work, make copies of representative DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files and open them in the alternative you plan to use. Check the elements that matter to your workflow rather than relying only on a supported-format list.
