VLC is the clearest free choice for Windows users who want a skinnable video player: VideoLAN provides downloadable skins and instructions for applying them. Winamp is a good alternative for music-first listening and users who enjoy classic or modern skins. Windows Media Player Legacy also supports skins, but Microsoft has scheduled an end to that feature on certain Windows 11 versions.

VLC: the most clearly documented option for video
VideoLAN describes VLC as free and open source and provides an official Windows download. Its skin catalog offers downloadable skins, and its VLC 3.0 instructions explain how to install and select them.
How to install a VLC skin
- Download a skin file with the .VLT extension from VideoLAN’s skin catalog.
- Place the .VLT file in VLC’s skins folder, following the Windows location and setup guidance in VideoLAN’s skin instructions.
- In VLC preferences, select the skinned interface as described in those instructions.
These directions are for VLC 3.0 documentation; they should not be taken as independent confirmation that every detail is unchanged in other versions.
Winamp: a skin-focused choice for music
Winamp’s official Windows desktop documentation describes both classic and modern/freeform skin categories. It also covers managing installed skins and selecting one from the Options menu. Winamp’s page describes the player as free, lists broad audio support, and includes some video formats. That information makes it a reasonable music-first alternative, but does not establish it as the stronger choice for general video playback.

Windows Media Player Legacy: support is scheduled to end on some Windows 11 versions
Microsoft documents skins for Windows Media Player Legacy and states: “Skins will no longer be supported in Windows Media Player Legacy (WMPL) starting November 10, 2026, on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.” The date is a scheduled change, not a change that has already taken effect as of October 4, 2026. Microsoft’s format list includes .wmz and .wms skin formats, along with .wmd skin packages. The list also notes that support for additional media formats can depend on installed codecs. Consult Microsoft’s supported file types page for the documented formats.

How to make the choice
- Choose VLC if video playback is the priority and you want an official, documented route to downloadable skins.
- Choose Winamp if music is your main use and you want documented classic or modern/freeform skin options.
- Keep using Windows Media Player Legacy if its interface is important to you, while accounting for Microsoft’s scheduled support change on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.
