OBS Studio is the best overall Fraps alternative in 2026. It is free, open source, works on Windows, macOS and Linux, records games and desktops, supports webcams and capture cards, and can stream from the same project. NVIDIA App is the easier choice for GeForce owners who mainly want Instant Replay, while AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Record fills that role for Radeon users. Bandicam suits Windows users who want long, straightforward recordings, and SteelSeries Moments, Outplayed or Medal are better for automatic highlights and shareable clips.

The right replacement depends on whether you need a one-button replay buffer, a complete broadcast studio, external HDMI capture, timeline editing or simply a reliable Windows recorder. This guide compares those workflows, the hardware each requires and the limits that matter before you install anything.

Which Fraps alternative is best in 2026?

Choose OBS Studio if you need the broadest feature set without a license fee. It handles recording and live streaming across the three major desktop operating systems and accepts game, window, desktop, webcam, browser, image, text and capture-card sources. GeForce owners who do not want to build scenes should start with NVIDIA App and its Instant Replay buffer; Radeon owners should look at AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Record.

Fraps remains a useful baseline because it was intentionally narrow: a one-time Windows recorder with loop capture, screenshots and frame-rate benchmarking. The comparison commonly used for its legacy profile lists a $37 one-time price and published compatibility from Windows XP through Windows 7. Modern alternatives add hardware encoders, replay controls, streaming, webcam layers and editing, but each makes different trade-offs.

What should you replace in Fraps first?

Fraps alternatives differ most in capture method, replay behavior and production depth. Decide whether you need a rolling buffer that saves the last few minutes, a conventional recording that runs until you stop it, or a scene-based production that mixes several sources.

  • Replay and highlights: NVIDIA App, AMD Adrenalin Record, SteelSeries Moments, Outplayed and Medal keep a rolling or trigger-based buffer for moments you did not know you wanted to save.
  • Full recording and streaming: OBS Studio, Streamlabs Desktop and XSplit let you assemble scenes, route audio and send a live program feed.
  • External video: OBS and Bandicam can accept a capture-device source, which is the normal path for a console or another HDMI device.
  • Editing after capture: Camtasia keeps recording and a substantial timeline editor in one application instead of requiring a separate editor.
  • Long unattended sessions: Bandicam’s guide covers recordings longer than 24 hours and hardware-encoder options.

1. OBS Studio: best overall and best free choice

What it does

OBS Studio is the strongest all-purpose replacement when recording is only one part of the job. The OBS Project describes it as free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. You can build scenes from game, window, desktop, webcam, browser, image, text and capture-card sources, then switch between unlimited scenes while recording or broadcasting.

Standout features

  • Unlimited scenes for separate gameplay, webcam, chat or starting layouts.
  • Audio filters and hotkeys for muting, push-to-talk and scene changes.
  • Studio Mode for previewing a scene before taking it live.
  • Multiview for monitoring several sources and outputs at once.
  • Plugins that extend sources, transitions and workflow automation.

Platforms, cost and limits

OBS runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, making it the most flexible choice for households with more than one desktop platform. There is no license fee. The trade-off is setup time: you must choose scenes, sources, audio routing and encoder settings instead of pressing one replay button. That learning curve is worthwhile for creators who need simultaneous recording and streaming, but excessive for someone who only saves occasional game clips.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. NVIDIA App: best for GeForce Instant Replay

What it does

NVIDIA App is the simplest recommendation for a GeForce owner who wants hardware-assisted capture with minimal configuration. NVIDIA documents recording games, applications or the desktop and includes Instant Replay, which creates a rolling recording as you work or play. When a memorable moment happens, a hotkey saves the buffered segment instead of requiring you to have started a full recording.

Quality and hardware

On supported GeForce RTX 40-series hardware, NVIDIA documents up to 4K at 120 frames per second or 8K at 60 frames per second with AV1. NVIDIA also reports that AV1 improves encoding efficiency by 40 percent. Those figures apply to the supported hardware and mode NVIDIA specifies; they are not a promise that every GeForce system can record at those settings.

Platforms, cost and limits

The app is intended for PCs with supported GeForce graphics. Its advantage is that the encoder and replay controls are integrated with the GPU, so there is little scene design to learn. It is not a replacement for a full broadcast mixer: creators who need many independent sources, elaborate transitions, multiview or extensive audio routing should use OBS Studio or a streaming application instead.

3. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Record: best Radeon-native option

What it does

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Record is the natural counterpart for a supported Radeon system. The recording tools cover gameplay and desktop capture, with controls for microphone audio, camera video, hotkeys and replay behavior. Radeon owners can keep capture controls in the same software family as their graphics driver rather than adding a separate studio application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replay and controls

Replay controls are useful when you want the previous portion of a match or speedrun without recording an entire session. Hotkeys make it practical to save a clip during play, while microphone and camera options cover commentary and face-cam formats.

Platforms, cost and limits

This is a Radeon-dependent solution for supported systems. Its integration is the main benefit and its main limitation: users without compatible Radeon hardware need another recorder. It also prioritizes gameplay and desktop capture over the unlimited-scene, plugin-based production model available in OBS.

4. Bandicam: best dedicated Windows recorder

What it does

Bandicam is built for Windows users who want a conventional recorder with several input modes. Its official guide covers game recording, screen recording, webcam recording and capture-device recording. That range lets one installation handle a full-screen game, a software tutorial, a camera feed or an external HDMI source connected through a capture device.

Standout features

  • 4K capture for compatible hardware and settings.
  • Hardware encoders to move video compression onto supported graphics hardware.
  • Recordings longer than 24 hours, useful for lectures, streams or unattended captures.
  • Direct upload for sending finished recordings to supported services.

Bandicam says it has more than 10 million users worldwide, a figure attributed to Bandicam in 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platforms, access and limits

Bandicam is a Windows-only choice in this comparison. Its focused interface is easier to approach than a complete scene compositor, but it does not offer OBS’s cross-platform operation or broad live-production toolkit. Check the current Bandicam license and trial terms before purchase because commercial software pricing and allowances can change.

5. SteelSeries Moments: best for automatic highlights

What it does

SteelSeries Moments targets players who want the software to identify or quickly save notable game events. Its workflow centers on instant replay, automatic highlights, basic clip editing and sharing rather than on building a broadcast layout.

Who should choose it

Moments is a good fit when the final product is a short social clip and you do not want to manage scenes, stream keys or encoder profiles. Replay capture means you can save an event after it happens, while editing and sharing keep the path from game to published clip short.

Platforms, access and limits

It is aimed at supported Windows gaming setups. The clip-first design is also the limitation: creators who need multiple cameras, browser overlays, detailed audio buses or a live program feed will have more control in OBS, Streamlabs Desktop or XSplit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Outplayed: best for game-specific automatic clips

What it does

Outplayed focuses on automatically captured highlights and fast sharing. It is designed around supported games and the moments players most often want to publish, reducing the need to remember a recording hotkey before a round, kill or objective.

Workflow

After capture, the app’s clip tools let you trim or prepare footage for sharing. That makes it more suitable for a highlight library than for a long-form recording archive or a multi-source stream.

Platforms and limits

Outplayed is intended for supported Windows gaming setups. Automatic detection depends on the game and the events the software recognizes; it is not a general replacement for desktop capture, external HDMI input or a full scene-based broadcast application.

7. Medal: best for fast clips and sharing

What it does

Medal is another clip-first alternative for players who value speed. Its core workflow combines instant or replay-style capture with editing and sharing, so a short gameplay moment can move from the game to a social post without opening a separate editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who it suits

Choose Medal when your priority is collecting short clips, organizing them and sharing them with friends or a community. The approach is less demanding than configuring a full recording studio and is well suited to creators who rarely need a webcam scene or a live broadcast.

Platforms and limits

Medal is aimed at supported Windows gaming setups. Its narrower production model means fewer controls for complex source layouts, detailed audio routing or multistreaming than OBS Studio, Streamlabs Desktop or XSplit Broadcaster provide.

8. Streamlabs Desktop: best for alerts, widgets and live production

What it does

Streamlabs Desktop is designed for creators whose recording workflow overlaps with live streaming. Its emphasis is built-in alerts and widgets alongside scenes and broadcast controls, so follows, subscriptions, chat events and other on-stream elements can be part of the production rather than added later.

When it is a better fit than a replay tool

Use Streamlabs Desktop when the audience interaction is part of the video: a starting screen, alert animation, chat panel, webcam frame or scene transition. A replay-only application is faster for isolated clips, but it cannot replace these broadcast components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platforms, access and limits

It is a desktop streaming application. The additional widgets and account connections increase setup compared with NVIDIA App, AMD Adrenalin Record or a clip service. Creators should also plan for the time needed to configure scenes, alerts, audio sources and stream destinations before going live.

9. XSplit Broadcaster: best for streaming and multistreaming options

What it does

XSplit Broadcaster is a scene-based broadcast application for creators who need more than local recording. It provides a free limited tier, while paid plans add higher-quality options, multistreaming and commercial-use rights.

Plans and trade-offs

The free tier is useful for learning the interface and producing within its limits. A paid plan becomes relevant when you need to send a show to multiple destinations, remove quality restrictions or use the software commercially. Because those entitlements are plan-dependent, confirm the current tier rules before committing to a production workflow.

Platforms and limits

XSplit is a Windows-focused choice. Its strength is broadcast control; a player who only wants a rolling replay buffer will likely find NVIDIA App, AMD Adrenalin Record or one of the clip tools faster to operate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Camtasia: best when recording and editing belong together

What it does

Camtasia combines screen recording with substantial timeline editing in one application. It is the most natural choice here for tutorials, narrated demonstrations, lessons or gameplay videos that need cuts, callouts and a finished sequence rather than an unedited clip.

Editing workflow

Record the screen, camera or narration, then move the result into the timeline for trimming and arrangement. Keeping capture and editing together avoids exporting to a second program simply to remove pauses or assemble sections.

Platforms, access and limits

Camtasia has Windows and Mac editions. It is editing-oriented rather than a dedicated replay buffer or broadcast studio, so it is less appropriate when the goal is to save the last 30 seconds of a match or manage a live multistream. Current license and trial terms should be checked before purchase.

How do I choose the right Fraps replacement?

Start with your hardware and the moment you want to save, then narrow the list by production requirements. The following decision path avoids paying for controls you will never use.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  1. Need Windows, Mac or Linux support and both recording and streaming? Start with OBS Studio. Its source list and plugin system cover the widest set of production layouts.
  2. Use a GeForce GPU and want the least setup? Choose NVIDIA App for Instant Replay and GPU-assisted capture.
  3. Use a Radeon GPU? Try AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Record for integrated gameplay, desktop, microphone, camera and replay controls.
  4. Want a straightforward Windows recorder for long sessions or external devices? Choose Bandicam, especially when recordings longer than 24 hours, 4K capture or hardware encoders matter.
  5. Want automatic highlights or social clips? Compare SteelSeries Moments, Outplayed and Medal. Their value is speed and event-focused capture, not studio production.
  6. Need alerts, widgets, guests or a live show? Compare Streamlabs Desktop and XSplit Broadcaster. XSplit’s free tier is limited; paid plans cover higher quality, multistreaming and commercial use.
  7. Need to cut, annotate and assemble the recording immediately? Use Camtasia so capture and timeline editing happen in one application.

Do I need a capture card?

You do not need a capture card for ordinary local PC gameplay when the recorder can capture the game or desktop directly. You do need one when the video comes from a console, another computer or another external HDMI device. In OBS, add the card as a capture-card source; Bandicam also documents capture-device recording.

A USB HDMI capture card is therefore an accessory for external-input workflows, not a mandatory upgrade for recording a game running on the same PC. Check whether the card supports the resolution, frame rate and passthrough behavior your console or monitor uses before buying.

How can I avoid the problems that make people leave Fraps?

Most failures come from choosing a recorder that does not match the hardware or workflow. Use these checks before blaming the game or the recording software.

  • Dropped frames or stutter: reduce capture resolution or frame rate, select a hardware encoder when your GPU supports one, and make sure the recording drive has sustained free space. Driver conflicts, encoder load and storage load can all contribute.
  • Missing microphone audio: verify the selected input and the application’s audio mixer before recording a full session. OBS users can apply audio filters and hotkeys; AMD’s recorder includes microphone controls; Bandicam supports webcam and capture-device modes.
  • Black game capture: try the recorder’s window or desktop source, then check that the game and recorder have compatible privilege levels. For an external console, use a capture-device source rather than a game source.
  • Replay does not save: confirm that the rolling buffer is enabled, the save-hotkey is distinct from other game bindings and the destination drive has room.
  • Overwhelming setup: start with one scene, one microphone and one output. Add webcam, browser and alert sources only after the basic recording is reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Fraps still suitable for Windows 11?

Fraps’ commonly cited compatibility range ends at Windows 7, so Windows 11 users should not assume current support. A modern recorder with active GPU, encoder and operating-system support is a safer choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I record a console with OBS without buying a special version?

OBS itself can use a capture card as a source; the extra hardware is what converts the console’s HDMI output into video the PC can receive. The same principle applies to another computer or camera that outputs HDMI.

Which option saves the last few minutes after an unexpected moment?

NVIDIA App’s Instant Replay creates a rolling recording, and AMD Adrenalin Record, SteelSeries Moments, Outplayed and Medal provide replay or highlight workflows. A conventional recording must already be running, so it is less suitable for surprise moments.

Can one app record gameplay and a webcam at the same time?

OBS can combine game, webcam and other sources in a scene. Bandicam documents game, screen and webcam recording, while AMD’s recorder includes microphone and camera controls; verify the exact camera and encoder combination on your hardware.

Which replacement is best for a tutorial rather than a gaming clip?

Camtasia is the clearest fit when the recording needs timeline editing after capture. OBS is better when the tutorial also requires multiple live sources, scene switching or streaming.
