Monster Hunter Wilds is the safest choice for a hunting group split between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Capcom explicitly confirmed cross-play for those platforms, so friends can hunt together regardless of which of the three versions they own.
If you want a slower, more realistic firearm-hunting simulator, Way of the Hunter 2 is the interesting alternative, but its cross-platform support needs checking before you buy. Monster Hunter: World is still an excellent same-platform co-op game, yet Capcom confirms that its PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions do not support cross-play.
Which crossplay hunting game should your group choose?
Choose Monster Hunter Wilds when your friends use PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC and you want fast, cooperative battles against giant creatures. Capcom’s announcement dated September 25, 2024 explicitly says that Wilds has cross-play between those platforms. The game launched on February 28, 2025, so it is the established, currently released option in this comparison.
Choose Way of the Hunter 2 only after confirming its current platform lineup and cross-play policy. Xbox Wire’s March 27, 2026 announcement presents it as a realism-focused hunting simulator coming to Xbox Series X|S, with tracking, calls, blinds, decoys, a tent and a dog companion. A secondary community guide reports two-player co-op in version 1.0 and no crossplay, but that is not a developer support source and should not be treated as final purchasing evidence.

Do not buy Monster Hunter: World expecting a mixed-platform session. Capcom Support states that the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions do not feature cross-play. Its save data is also unique to each platform and cannot be transferred.

This table separates three questions that are often conflated: whether a game is released, whether different platforms can join the same session, and whether progress follows a player to another platform. A “yes” to cross-play does not imply a “yes” to cross-save.
Why Monster Hunter Wilds is the best mixed-platform recommendation
Official support for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC
Wilds is the clearest answer to “What hunting games have crossplay?” Capcom’s September 25, 2024 announcement names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC and says that players can enjoy the game together regardless of their game platform. That is direct publisher confirmation rather than an inference from a store badge or a community report.

Everyone must still own the appropriate edition for their hardware. Cross-play connects the platforms; it does not provide a free copy on another system.
Fast cooperative monster hunts
Monster Hunter is built around cooperating to hunt giant monsters. Wilds therefore fits groups that want an active combat game rather than a patient wildlife simulator. The appeal is the shared hunt itself: players coordinate against a large target, react to its behavior and work toward a successful takedown. Capcom describes the series as hunting action games, which distinguishes Wilds from games centered on firearm ballistics, stealth observation or trophy-room management.
That distinction matters when a group uses the word “hunting” differently. If your friends mean boss-style encounters, equipment preparation and action combat, Wilds is the natural fit. If they mean identifying tracks, selecting a blind and waiting for an animal, look at the Way of the Hunter 2 section instead.
What the cross-play announcement does not promise
Capcom’s statement confirms cross-play, not cross-save. Cross-play answers whether players on different systems can share a session. Cross-save, cross-progression or account transfer answers whether a character, inventory, campaign state or other progress can move between systems.

Do not assume that buying Wilds on a second platform will restore the same progress. Before changing platforms, read the current account and save documentation for the edition you use. If a friend plans to move from console to PC, make that check before spending money on a second copy.
Which edition to buy
Match the purchase to the hardware each player actually uses: “Monster Hunter Wilds PS5,” “Monster Hunter Wilds Xbox Series X|S” or “Monster Hunter Wilds PC” are the useful edition descriptions. A cross-play group can contain all three versions, but a PS5 owner needs the PS5 edition, an Xbox player needs the Xbox Series X|S edition and a PC player needs the PC edition.
Check the product page’s supported platform and online features immediately before buying. Store listings can change their wording, and a console generation label is not interchangeable with another generation’s version.
What makes Way of the Hunter 2 different?
A deliberate wildlife-simulation loop
Way of the Hunter 2 is the strongest alternative for players who want realism rather than Monster Hunter’s action-RPG combat. Xbox Wire’s March 27, 2026 announcement describes free hunting, studying tracks and movement patterns, and preparing equipment for a considered approach.
The documented equipment includes calls, blinds, duck decoys, backpacks and a tent. Those tools imply a planning-led session: find evidence of an animal, understand how it moves, choose an approach and set up the equipment that suits the encounter. The announcement also highlights an American foxhound companion trained for blood tracking, which gives the game a distinct dog-assisted tracking feature.
Regions, species and trophies
Xbox Wire lists three regions and more than 30 species, including moose, elk, bears, bison, rabbits and turkeys. It also describes an expandable lodge where players can display trophies. These details make Way of the Hunter 2 a better match for a group that enjoys identifying animals, improving a collection and taking time over each expedition.
The source describes the content announced by Xbox Wire; it does not establish that every listed region, species or feature is available in every edition or at every launch date. Confirm the final product description for your territory.

Crossplay and co-op need verification
The available secondary guide reports that version 1.0 co-op is limited to two players and that crossplay is unavailable. Because that information does not come from a developer support page, use it as a warning rather than a guarantee. If one friend is on Xbox and another is on PC or PlayStation, check the current official FAQ and the exact store listing before purchasing.
Xbox Wire’s announcement specifically identifies Xbox Series X|S and says the game is coming to that platform. It does not, in the supplied information, provide a complete final list of platforms, a definitive launch date or a regional availability schedule. A game can be announced, released in one territory and still unavailable in another, so verify all three points for your group.
Who should pick it?
- Pick it when the group values tracking, observation and realistic firearm hunting more than continuous combat.
- Pick it when a two-player session is sufficient, but only after confirming that the current build still supports the required players.
- Do not pick it as a guaranteed cross-platform solution until the publisher’s current documentation names the platform combination you need.
Why Monster Hunter: World fails the mixed-platform test
No cross-play between PC, Xbox One and PS4
Monster Hunter: World remains a capable co-op hunting game for friends who use the same platform family. It fails the specific requirement in this article, however. Capcom Support states: “Monster Hunter: World does not feature cross-play across the PC, XBOX One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game.”
That means a PC player cannot join a friend playing the Xbox One version, and a PlayStation 4 player cannot join either of those versions. Owning the same title is not enough; the platform network is part of the compatibility boundary.
Save data is platform-specific
Capcom Support also says that World save data is unique to each platform and cannot be transferred. If someone changes from console to PC, they should expect to start with the save associated with that platform rather than importing the old one.

A game can have one limitation without the other; World has both no mixed-platform sessions and no save transfer between its listed versions.
When World still makes sense
World is still a reasonable choice when everyone is already on the same supported platform and wants Monster Hunter’s cooperative action. It may also make sense for a group that deliberately agrees to play on one platform family. It is not the right purchase for a group whose requirement is “PS5, Xbox and PC together,” and buying it on different systems will not solve that problem.

Choose by the kind of hunting your friends mean
Choose action hunts
Select Monster Hunter Wilds if the group wants large-monster battles, active teamwork and a cross-play policy confirmed by the publisher. Its PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC coverage makes it the low-risk recommendation for a mixed-platform party.
Choose realistic firearm simulation
Select Way of the Hunter 2 if the group wants tracking, calls, blinds, decoys, a blood-tracking dog and trophy displays. Treat the platform and crossplay details as items to verify, not assumptions, because the available crossplay report is secondary and the announcement describes the game as coming to Xbox Series X|S.
Choose same-platform Monster Hunter
Select Monster Hunter: World only when everyone can play on the same platform family. Its lack of cross-play is confirmed by Capcom Support, so it should not be placed in a mixed-platform shopping cart.
How to verify compatibility before anyone buys
- List every player’s hardware. Write down whether each person uses PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox One or PS4. Do not group different console generations under one vague “console” label.
- Match the game to the hardware list. Wilds has publisher-confirmed coverage for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. World cannot connect its PC, Xbox One and PS4 versions. For Way of the Hunter 2, start with the platform information in the current official listing.
- Look for an explicit cross-play statement. “Online multiplayer” does not necessarily mean cross-platform multiplayer. Prefer wording that names the platforms or says players can play together regardless of platform.
- Check the exact edition. Confirm that each player is buying the version for their own hardware. A cross-play feature cannot make an incompatible edition run on another device.
- Check release and regional availability. Wilds has a February 28, 2025 release date. Way of the Hunter 2 was described by Xbox Wire on March 27, 2026 as coming to Xbox Series X|S; verify whether it is now released and sold in your region.
- Check cross-save separately. If anyone expects to switch platforms, search the current platform and account documentation for cross-save or cross-progression. Do not infer it from cross-play.
- Confirm the party requirement. If your group has more than two people and is considering Way of the Hunter 2, verify the current co-op limit rather than relying on the secondary version 1.0 report.
- Agree on the purchase platform before launch day. A group that chooses one common platform family can avoid a cross-play mismatch, but that is a different plan from using Wilds across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Cross-play, cross-save and cross-generation are different

Cross-save
Cross-save lets a player carry progress between platforms or devices. The Wilds announcement does not establish that feature, and World’s Capcom Support entry explicitly says its save data cannot be transferred between the listed platforms.
Cross-generation compatibility
Cross-generation compatibility concerns different hardware generations within a platform family, such as Xbox One versus Xbox Series X|S or PS4 versus PS5. It is not the same as cross-play. World’s documented versions are PC, Xbox One and PS4, while Wilds’ confirmed list is PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Always read the exact version labels.

Assuming every Monster Hunter game is cross-platform
The series name does not guarantee a shared network environment. Wilds has explicit cross-play confirmation; World explicitly does not. Check the individual game, not the franchise reputation.

Confusing “multiplayer” with “crossplay”
A store page can describe online or cooperative play without saying that separate console networks can connect. Require a platform-specific cross-play statement before treating a game as suitable for your group.
Assuming a future announcement is a current feature
Way of the Hunter 2’s Xbox Wire announcement describes planned content and an Xbox Series X|S release. Availability, final platform coverage and service features should be checked at the time of purchase.
Buying before checking the party size
The available secondary guide reports two-player co-op for Way of the Hunter 2 version 1.0. If your group is larger, verify the current limit in official documentation. Wilds’ cited announcement confirms cooperative play but does not state a party-size figure, so consult the current game information for your planned group size.

Expecting progress to follow a friend to another system
Cross-play only concerns joining a session. Before a platform switch, verify cross-save support for that game and account. World is a clear example of why this check matters: Capcom says its saves are platform-specific and cannot be transferred.
Final recommendation for a mixed PS5, Xbox and PC group
Buy Monster Hunter Wilds when your priority is a reliable, current cross-platform hunting game. It is the only option covered here with explicit publisher confirmation for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and its action-RPG structure gives a group a shared reason to keep playing together.
Keep Way of the Hunter 2 on the shortlist for a realism-first group, but make the purchase conditional on verifying its current platform list, release status, regional availability and crossplay support. Choose Monster Hunter: World only for a same-platform party, because Capcom’s support documentation rules it out for PC, Xbox One and PS4 cross-play.
