Google Photos is the best overall cloud storage for photos and pictures. It supports Android, iPhone, iPad, computers, automatic backup, albums, sharing, and searchable photo management. Apple households may prefer iCloud Photos, while U.S. Prime members with mostly still photos should consider Amazon Photos.

Google Photos is the best overall cloud storage for photos and pictures. It works well across Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac, and the web, combines automatic backup with strong search and sharing, and is usually the least troublesome choice for mixed-device households.

There are important exceptions. iCloud Photos is better for an Apple-only household, Amazon Photos can be the best value for a U.S. Prime member with mostly still photos, OneDrive makes the most sense for an existing Microsoft 365 subscriber, and Flickr Pro is the better choice for photographers who want full-resolution hosting and public presentation.

Whichever service you choose, do not treat cloud synchronization as your only backup. Keep a second copy on an external drive or another independently maintained storage system, and disconnect at least one backup copy when it is not being updated.

Our recommendation: Google Photos for most people

Google Photos is the safest default when a household uses more than one type of device. It provides Android and iPhone/iPad apps, computer and web access, automatic photo and video backup, albums, sharing, and searchable photo management in one service.

It is especially useful for families whose pictures are spread across Android phones, iPhones, Windows PCs, and Macs. Everyone can access the library without having to move the household onto one hardware platform. Google Photos is also more photo-focused than a conventional file-sync service: the experience is built around browsing, search, albums, memories, and sharing rather than folders alone.

Google Photos storage and quality settings

Every Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage, but that space is shared by Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. A large photo library can therefore compete with email attachments, Drive files, and device backups for the same capacity. Google One adds paid storage; the U.S. plan page reviewed lists 100 GB at $1.99 per month and larger options including 2 TB and 5 TB.

When backing up in Google Photos, you generally choose between these quality modes:

  • Original quality: Keeps the captured resolution and counts against your Google Account storage. Choose this for important originals, heavy editing, large prints, or photography work.
  • Storage saver: Reduces some large photos to 16 megapixels and videos above 1080p to 1080p. It uses less space, but it is not an untouched copy of every original.
  • Express quality: Available only in supported regions and intended for smaller uploads. Check the options shown in your account before relying on it for preservation.

In the mobile app, the relevant controls are under Google Photos > profile picture > Photos settings > Backup. Check both the Google Account selected for backup and the quality setting. If you switch from Original quality to Storage saver, do not assume that files already backed up will automatically become a perfect archival copy of the camera originals.

Google states that new photos and videos cannot be saved when the account runs out of storage. It also says content may be deleted after two years of inactivity under its applicable policy. That makes account access, storage monitoring, and a separate backup important for an irreplaceable library.

Best for Apple households: iCloud Photos

Choose iCloud Photos when the household primarily uses an iPhone, iPad, and Mac and wants the library to behave like a native part of Apple Photos. Apple stores originals and synchronizes edits across supported devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K, Apple Vision Pro, Windows PCs, and iCloud.com.

The feature that makes iCloud particularly convenient is Optimize Storage. When enabled, the device can keep smaller local versions while the full-resolution originals remain in iCloud. This is valuable on an iPhone or Mac with limited internal storage: the whole library can remain visible without requiring every original to stay downloaded locally.

On an iPhone or iPad, look under Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos to enable iCloud Photos and choose Optimize Storage. On a Mac, the equivalent controls are in Photos > Settings > iCloud. Exact labels can vary slightly by operating-system version.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

iCloud+ storage tiers in the U.S. include 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB. Storage can be shared with up to five additional family members. Remember that the capacity is not reserved exclusively for pictures: iPhone and iPad backups, messages, files, and other iCloud data use the same pool.

The trade-off is platform dependence. iCloud Photos is excellent when Apple Photos is the center of the household, but it is a less natural choice for an Android-first family or one that frequently switches between Android, Windows, and Apple devices.

Best Prime-member value for still photos: Amazon Photos

For a U.S. Amazon Prime member with a large collection of still photos, Amazon Photos is an unusually strong value. The Prime benefit includes unlimited high-resolution photo storage and up to 5 GB of video storage. The service works across devices and can also display memories on compatible Echo Show and Fire TV devices.

The 5 GB video limit is the detail that determines whether Amazon Photos is suitable. Modern phones capture large 4K videos, and a video-heavy camera roll can exceed 5 GB quickly. Prime therefore makes Amazon Photos a compelling photo vault, not an unlimited backup plan for a combined photo-and-video archive.

Non-Prime customers receive 5 GB of combined photo and video storage. That is enough to test the service, but it is not a generous long-term allowance for most families.

Pick Amazon Photos when all three of these statements are true:

  1. You already pay for Prime or would keep Prime for other reasons.
  2. Your library is mostly still images.
  3. You have a separate plan for videos, such as another cloud service or local backup storage.

Best for Microsoft 365 subscribers: OneDrive

OneDrive is the practical choice when the household already pays for Microsoft 365. Qualifying Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium subscriptions include 1 TB of OneDrive storage per person. Family plans allocate storage per person rather than requiring everyone to compete for one small shared allowance.

OneDrive is less specialized for photo search and presentation than Google Photos or Apple Photos, but that is also its advantage. Photos, documents, spreadsheets, Office files, and other personal data can live within the same Microsoft account and work naturally across Windows PCs and Microsoft 365 apps.

Choose OneDrive if you value consolidation more than a dedicated photo experience. It is particularly sensible for a Windows household that already uses Word, Excel, Outlook, or other Microsoft services and does not want to pay for a separate photo platform.

Best for photographers and public galleries: Flickr Pro

Flickr Pro is aimed at photographers rather than ordinary camera-roll backup. Pro members can upload unlimited full-resolution photos, keep unlimited non-public content, browse and share without ads, use enhanced download capabilities, and view advanced statistics. Pro also includes the Auto-Uploadr feature.

That makes Flickr Pro attractive for photographers who want to show work, organize galleries, share selected images publicly, or maintain a high-resolution collection without treating it as a private phone backup. Its community and presentation tools are the reason to choose it.

Do not confuse Flickr’s free tier with an unlimited private archive. Flickr states that free accounts are limited to 1,000 total items and 50 non-public photos or videos, with excess content at risk of suspension or deletion. If privacy and long-term storage are central, check the current Pro terms and keep another copy elsewhere.

Best for ordinary file synchronization: Dropbox

Dropbox remains a credible option when photos are part of a broader file-sharing workflow. Dropbox Basic starts with 2 GB, while Dropbox Plus provides 2 TB. Its strengths are dependable file synchronization, folder-based organization, and straightforward sharing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dropbox is not the first choice for a large camera roll if you want the strongest photo search, memories, or editing-oriented organization. It is better suited to photographers, teams, or families who already use Dropbox and want photos to behave like other synchronized files.

Choose by device, subscription, and library type

  • Mostly Android: Start with Google Photos. It is integrated with Android and remains accessible from other platforms.
  • iPhone, iPad, and Mac only: Choose iCloud Photos for the smoothest Apple Photos experience and Optimize Storage.
  • Mixed Android, iPhone, Windows, and Mac: Choose Google Photos unless the household already has a compelling Microsoft 365 or Prime-based reason to use something else.
  • Prime member with mostly still photos: Amazon Photos may provide the best value, but make a separate plan for video.
  • Microsoft 365 subscriber: Use OneDrive if the included 1 TB per person covers your needs and you prefer one productivity-and-storage ecosystem.
  • Photographer seeking public presentation: Choose Flickr Pro, while retaining a separate private backup.
  • General file collaboration: Dropbox is a sound choice if its synchronization and sharing features matter more than photo-specific search.

Original quality or space-saving quality?

Use original quality when the cloud copy may be used for future editing, large prints, professional delivery, or preservation. A quality-reduced copy may look fine on a phone but leave less flexibility for cropping, printing, or recovering detail later.

Use a space-saving setting for a casual collection when the priority is fitting more everyday snapshots into a smaller plan. Before choosing it, check exactly what the service changes. Google Photos explicitly documents that Storage saver can reduce some photos to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p. Do not call that a lossless archive.

Video should be included in your storage calculation. A plan that comfortably holds years of still photos may fill quickly once 4K phone videos are added. Amazon’s 5 GB Prime video allowance is the clearest example, but the same planning issue applies to every pooled storage service.

Cloud storage is not the same as an independent backup

A synchronized cloud library is convenient, but synchronization can reproduce changes across devices. It also leaves you dependent on the account, service availability, storage limits, and the provider’s retention rules. If an unwanted deletion, account problem, or ransomware incident affects the synchronized environment, the cloud copy may not be enough by itself.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recommends backing up important data to a secure external hard drive or a properly vetted cloud service. Its 3-2-1 approach is a useful target:

  • 3 copies of important files
  • 2 different types of media
  • 1 copy off site

A sensible household workflow is to keep the working photo library in your chosen cloud service, maintain a second copy on an external hard drive for photo backup or portable SSD, and periodically disconnect that physical copy. For especially valuable photos, maintain a third copy in another location or an independently managed cloud destination.

Do not leave the only external backup permanently connected to the computer. CISA warns that ransomware can reach connected backup drives. Reconnect the drive for scheduled updates, verify that new files are present, then safely eject it and store it away from the computer.

Where a NAS fits

A network-attached storage system can be useful for a large household library, especially when several people need local access. It can provide substantial capacity and a central place to organize files, but it is not automatically a backup. Drive failure, theft, fire, accidental deletion, and ransomware can still affect a NAS.

Advanced households can consider a NAS for family photo storage, but the NAS itself needs another backup or off-site copy. Treat it as one layer in a 3-2-1 design, not as the complete design.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Choose one primary library: Decide whether Google Photos, iCloud Photos, Amazon Photos, OneDrive, Flickr, or Dropbox will receive new photos automatically.
  2. Check the account: Make sure the app is backing up to the account that the household can access and recover.
  3. Select quality deliberately: Choose Original quality for irreplaceable originals and a space-saving option only when its trade-offs are acceptable.
  4. Include videos in the estimate: Review how much video is already in the camera roll and whether the service’s allowance covers it.
  5. Wait for backup to finish: Do not erase photos from a phone or memory card merely because the app is installed. Confirm that the files appear in the cloud and that recent uploads have completed.
  6. Verify originals: Open several older and newer files from the cloud, download samples, and check resolution before clearing local storage or changing providers.
  7. Create an independent copy: Periodically export or copy the original files to an external drive, SSD, or properly backed-up NAS.
  8. Disconnect one copy: Keep at least one physical backup offline when it is not being updated.
  9. Test recovery: Occasionally restore a small selection to confirm that the process, account credentials, and file organization actually work.

Freeing space on a Windows PC after backing up photos

After confirming that photos exist in the cloud and in a second backup, Windows users can review local disk usage through Settings > System > Storage. Storage Sense and the temporary-file controls can help remove unnecessary local files.

Review deletion suggestions carefully. A cleanup tool is not a photo backup, and freeing disk space should happen only after the original files have been verified in at least one or preferably two other locations. Never use cleanup as a substitute for exporting originals.

Final verdict

Choose Google Photos for the best all-around experience, especially with Android, Windows, or a mixed-device household. Choose iCloud Photos for a committed Apple household, Amazon Photos for a U.S. Prime member whose library is mostly still images, OneDrive when Microsoft 365 is already part of the budget, Flickr Pro for photography presentation and full-resolution hosting, and Dropbox for general file synchronization.

The most reliable approach is not simply picking the service with the largest headline number. Pick a platform you will consistently use, select the appropriate quality setting, account for video, and maintain an independent backup that is not permanently connected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Google Photos is better for Android, Windows, Mac, iPhone, and mixed-device households because it is broadly accessible and photo-focused. iCloud Photos is better when the household primarily uses iPhone, iPad, and Mac and wants the native Apple Photos experience.

Is Google Photos better than iCloud Photos?

No. In the U.S., Prime includes unlimited high-resolution photo storage but only 5 GB of video storage. Non-Prime customers receive 5 GB of combined photo and video storage.

Does Amazon Photos provide unlimited cloud storage for videos?

Use Google Photos Original quality when you need the captured resolution. iCloud Photos stores originals in iCloud, and Flickr Pro offers unlimited full-resolution photo hosting. Always check the selected upload setting and keep a separate copy of irreplaceable originals.

What is the best cloud storage for full-quality photos?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Not reliably by itself. Synchronization can reproduce deletions, and your account remains dependent on the provider and its storage and retention rules. Follow a 3-2-1 approach when possible: three copies, two media types, and one off-site copy.

Can cloud photo storage replace an external backup drive?

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Google Photos. Best Apple choice: iCloud Photos. Best Prime still-photo value: Amazon Photos, provided you plan separately for video. For irreplaceable pictures, pair any cloud service with a disconnected local backup.
