Backblaze Business Computer Backup is the clearest Carbonite alternative for a small company that mainly needs automatic backup for Mac and Windows computers, centralized administration, and unlimited backup storage per device. Acronis Cyber Protect is the better comparison when you need local backup destinations, physical or virtual server protection, or backup combined with cybersecurity controls. Carbonite remains a reasonable baseline, but its US professional plans publish storage caps and different computer, NAS, and server limits.

There is no universal winner. Choose by workload: count endpoints and servers, measure the data that must be retained, define how quickly files or whole machines must be restored, and run a representative restore before moving every device. Prices, promotions, retention rules, and plan entitlements can change, so confirm them at checkout.

Which Carbonite alternative fits a small business?

For a mostly laptop-and-desktop workforce, start with Backblaze Business. For mixed infrastructure or a local-plus-cloud design, evaluate Acronis Cyber Protect. Keep Carbonite in the comparison if its published computer, NAS, and server allowances match your environment and its support model meets your recovery requirements.

Option Best documented fit What it offers Verify before buying
Carbonite Professional Businesses wanting a published business tier for computers, NAS, and servers Core, Power, and Ultimate plans; 250 GB or 500 GB cloud allowances; 256-bit encryption in transit and at rest Storage cap, NAS compatibility, server count, renewal price, additional storage, retention, and recovery procedure
Backblaze Business Computer Backup Mac and Windows endpoint fleets prioritizing unlimited storage per device Automatic endpoint protection, centralized administration, multiple-user management, and one-year version history Protected-drive scope, retention beyond the published history period, restore workflow, and enterprise controls
Acronis Cyber Protect Businesses needing cloud or local destinations, physical or virtual server coverage, or bundled security Per-device licensing with backups to Acronis Cloud, another cloud, or local storage; computer and server support Exact plan, storage allowance, supported systems, security features, and total device cost

These are workload matches, not a ranking based on independent performance tests. The vendor pages establish different pieces of the comparison, so you must reconcile the gaps with a trial, a written quote, and a restore exercise.

What does Carbonite Professional include?

Carbonite is a useful baseline because its professional page publishes concrete computer, NAS, server, storage, and price limits. Those limits matter when a small business has shared storage or even one server; an endpoint-only price can look attractive until those workloads are added.

Plan Page-listed coverage Cloud storage Listed annual price
Core Up to 25 computers, external drives, and NAS 250 GB $287.99 per year before the displayed promotion
Power One server plus up to 25 computers 500 GB $799.99 per year
Ultimate Unlimited servers plus up to 25 computers 500 GB $1,299.99 per year

The page also lists $99 for each additional 100 GB increment and a 30-day trial. It currently displays a 20% promotional reduction, but both promotions and renewal pricing can change; treat the figures above as page-listed prices, not a guaranteed future invoice.

Carbonite states that data is encrypted with 256-bit encryption while moving and while stored. Its page describes recovery support after ransomware within two weeks. That is a vendor-stated service description rather than an independent audit, so ask what qualifies for the support, what data must be available, and whether the stated time is a target or a guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before selecting Carbonite, map every protected source to the plan. Core’s NAS allowance is not interchangeable with Power’s server allowance, and Ultimate’s unlimited-server wording still leaves the 25-computer limit and 500 GB storage allowance. Determine whether your NAS model, file systems, external drives, and operating-system versions are supported, then request the retention and recovery terms in writing.

Is Backblaze Business the best endpoint-focused alternative?

Backblaze Business Computer Backup is the strongest documented fit when the business mainly needs automatic protection for Mac and Windows computers. The service describes centralized administration, multiple-user management, administrative controls, and unlimited backup storage per device, while its business page lists one-year version history.

What the $99 price does and does not tell you

The official pricing page lists Business Backup at $99 per computer per year. That is a per-computer charge, so multiply it by every protected computer rather than treating it as a company-wide subscription. A fleet of 12 computers, for example, would have a page-listed software charge of $1,188 for one year before taxes or any optional services; your actual total depends on the devices and terms in the checkout flow.

“Unlimited” describes backup storage per device in the published description. It does not establish unlimited retention, unlimited restore bandwidth, server imaging, NAS support, or SaaS application backup. The same page states one-year version history, so verify how long deleted files and older revisions remain available and whether longer retention can be purchased.

Where Backblaze fits—and where it may not

  • Good fit: distributed Mac and Windows staff computers, automatic file protection, and one administrator who needs a central view of users and devices.
  • Potential mismatch: physical or virtual servers, NAS appliances, bare-metal image recovery, or a requirement to keep a local copy under your control.
  • Questions to ask: Which internal and external drives are included, how are exclusions handled, what roles can administrators assign, and how are restores delivered for a large dataset?

Run a restore from a real employee computer, including a folder with permissions, a large media file, and a recently deleted document. Confirm that the recovered files open correctly and that an administrator can complete the process without using the employee’s credentials.

When is Acronis Cyber Protect a better choice?

Acronis Cyber Protect deserves priority when backup architecture matters as much as endpoint convenience. Its small-business product describes backups to Acronis Cloud, another cloud provider, or local destinations, and support for computers, physical servers, and virtual servers. It also presents backup alongside cybersecurity capabilities.

Use multiple destinations deliberately

A local destination can shorten recovery for a large server or an office with limited internet upload capacity. A cloud destination supplies off-site protection if the office is flooded, stolen, or encrypted by ransomware. Using both can create a practical 3-2-1 pattern—multiple copies, on different media, with at least one copy off-site—but the product description alone does not define your exact plan’s retention, immutability, or storage limits.

An external hard drive can serve as the local target when the selected Acronis plan and operating system support it. It is not a substitute for an off-site copy: a drive left beside a server can be lost or encrypted in the same incident. Rotate or relocate local media according to your recovery plan and encrypt it if it leaves the office.

Server and security questions to resolve

Because Acronis uses per-device pricing, count workstations, physical servers, virtual machines, and any other protected systems separately. Confirm whether a virtual host, guest machines, or both require licenses. Ask which cybersecurity features are included in the plan you are considering; the product family description is broader than any one entitlement.

  • Can the plan create full-machine images as well as file-level backups?
  • Can a server be restored to dissimilar hardware or a new virtual machine?
  • Are local, Acronis Cloud, and third-party cloud targets all available under the quoted edition?
  • What are the retention, deletion, immutability, and encryption-key controls?
  • How are alerts, administrator roles, and failed-job remediation handled?

Acronis is therefore a better candidate than an endpoint-only service when a failed server threatens operations. It may be less economical for a company with dozens of simple laptops and no server or local-storage requirement, so compare the per-device quote with the endpoint count.

How do endpoint, server, image, and SaaS backup differ?

“Cloud backup” is not one workload. A file-synchronization-style endpoint backup, a bootable server image, and a Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace backup have different recovery objectives and usually different product entitlements.

Endpoint file backup

Endpoint backup protects user documents and other selected files from laptop failure, accidental deletion, or ransomware. Check whether it includes internal and attached drives, how exclusions work, whether open files are captured, and whether administrators can restore without taking control of the user’s device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Physical and virtual server recovery

Server protection may require application-aware snapshots, full-machine images, bare-metal recovery, or virtual-machine integration. A plan that protects files on a workstation may not restore a boot volume, database, directory service, or virtual host. Ask for a recovery runbook and the supported hypervisors, operating systems, and applications.

SaaS application data

Endpoint coverage does not automatically back up cloud mail, calendars, shared drives, or collaboration data. The official material used for this comparison does not establish Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace coverage for these options. If SaaS data is in scope, require the vendor to identify the exact applications, objects, retention rules, export format, and restore permissions in the proposal.

What should you compare when switching from Carbonite?

Use the following checklist before comparing headline prices. A cheap plan that cannot restore the data you actually need is an expensive outage.

1. Protected devices and data sources

  • Count Windows and Mac computers, including contractors’ or branch-office devices.
  • List NAS shares, external drives, physical servers, virtual machines, and databases.
  • Separate user files from operating-system images and application data.
  • Identify SaaS services that need a dedicated backup product.

2. Storage model and growth

Record the current data volume, daily change rate, and expected annual growth. Carbonite’s listed 250 GB and 500 GB allowances may be sufficient for light endpoint data but restrictive for media, design, or server repositories. Backblaze’s published unlimited-per-device model removes a storage-cap calculation for covered endpoints, while Acronis requires you to confirm the allowance attached to the selected license and destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Retention and deletion behavior

Ask how many versions are retained, how long deleted files remain recoverable, and whether a retention clock resets when a file changes. Backblaze publicly describes one-year version history. The Carbonite and Acronis material summarized here does not establish equivalent retention periods, so obtain those terms before approval.

4. Recovery objectives

Define a recovery time objective (how quickly service must resume) and a recovery point objective (how much recent work you can afford to lose) for each workload. File-level recovery may meet a laptop objective; a server may need an image, local copy, or temporary cloud recovery environment. Request expected restore methods and any data-shipping or priority-recovery options.

  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

5. Administration and security

  • Require role-based administration, multi-user access, and alerts for failed or paused backups.
  • Confirm whether the provider or your organization controls encryption keys and whether private-key mode affects web restores or support.
  • Check audit logs, device offboarding, account recovery, and protection against an administrator account takeover.
  • Ask how ransomware recovery, immutable copies, and mass-deletion safeguards work.

6. Contract and support terms

Compare annual renewal pricing, minimum device commitments, overage charges, taxes, cancellation rules, and support hours. A 30-day trial is useful for validating agents and restores, but it does not prove that a full company migration will finish within the trial window.

Budget bandwidth, local storage, and staff time as well as subscription fees. The first upload can compete with business traffic, and a server image may consume local disk space. Schedule initial seeding after hours, throttle agents if necessary, and include periodic restore tests in the operating budget.

How do you switch from Carbonite without creating a backup gap?

Do not uninstall the existing agent until the replacement has completed an initial backup and a restore has passed. A staged migration keeps the old recovery path available while you validate the new one.

  1. Inventory workloads. Export a device list, identify data owners, record NAS and server shares, and classify each system by recovery priority.
  2. Document the current state. Note Carbonite plan, protected paths, retention settings, encryption-key arrangements, and the last successful backup for every critical device.
  3. Select a pilot group. Include one ordinary laptop, one power user with large files, a machine with an external drive, and a server or NAS if the candidate supports it.
  4. Install the replacement agent. Use the vendor’s current installer, create separate administrator accounts, apply exclusions deliberately, and prevent sleep or network policies from interrupting the initial upload.
  5. Complete the first backup. Check that all intended paths are selected, the data count is plausible, and the console reports successful jobs rather than merely installed agents.
  6. Run restores. Recover a recently changed document, a deleted file, a folder with permissions, and a large file. For servers, perform the documented image or bare-metal procedure on isolated hardware or a test virtual machine.
  7. Compare recovery results. Open recovered files, verify timestamps and permissions, measure elapsed time, and record who can approve and perform a restore.
  8. Roll out in waves. Migrate departments in batches, monitor failed jobs and bandwidth, and retain the old service until every high-priority workload has a verified recovery point.
  9. Decommission carefully. Export logs, preserve required retention, remove old agents only after the contractual retention period is understood, and revoke unused administrator credentials.

What are the most common purchasing and deployment mistakes?

  • Choosing by storage headline alone. Unlimited endpoint storage does not solve server imaging, NAS, SaaS, or long-term retention requirements.
  • Ignoring deleted-file retention. A file can disappear from a backup sooner than expected after an employee deletes it or a ransomware event encrypts it.
  • Assuming every drive is covered. External drives, mapped shares, and removable media often need explicit inclusion or have separate support rules.
  • Counting servers incorrectly. Physical hosts, guests, and application servers can each affect licensing and recovery design.
  • Testing only a tiny document. A successful 2 MB restore does not prove that a 500 GB project folder or bootable server image will recover within your objective.
  • Leaving administration with one person. Create at least one additional protected administrator account and document the recovery process.
  • Confusing encryption with key control. “256-bit encryption” describes a cryptographic strength claim; it does not tell you who holds the keys, whether the provider can reset them, or how support-assisted recovery works.
  • Trusting a promotion as a long-term price. Record the standard renewal price, storage overage, and device additions before signing.
  • Removing the old service too early. Keep overlapping coverage until the new service has a verified, usable recovery point for each critical workload.

Which service should you shortlist?

Shortlist Backblaze first for a Mac-and-Windows endpoint fleet where unlimited per-device backup and central administration are the main needs. Shortlist Acronis Cyber Protect first when local targets, physical or virtual servers, image recovery, or integrated security are central to the design. Keep Carbonite as a contender when its 25-computer, NAS, server, and 250/500 GB limits fit and its published support and pricing remain acceptable after renewal terms are confirmed.

Whichever option survives the paperwork, require a pilot and a restore record before declaring the migration complete. The practical winner is the service that can recover your highest-priority data, on the required schedule, under an administrator other than the person who configured it.

Can a small business rely on a 30-day trial to evaluate a backup service?

A trial can confirm agent deployment, console visibility, and small restores, but a full initial upload and a server recovery may take longer. Use the trial to validate a representative pilot, then obtain written production terms before expanding.

Will endpoint backup protect Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace data?

Not automatically. Endpoint agents protect selected computer data, while SaaS backup requires application-specific access, object retention, and restore functions; obtain an explicit list of supported services and objects.

Is a local external drive enough if the cloud plan is expensive?

A local drive can speed recovery and reduce cloud storage use, but it shares office risks such as theft, fire, and ransomware. Keep at least one protected copy off-site and test that the local media can actually be read when needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should we perform a restore test?

Schedule a small file restore at a regular operational interval and a larger recovery exercise whenever you change providers, servers, retention, or encryption settings. Record the data set, elapsed time, permissions result, and person who performed the test so the procedure is repeatable during an incident.
