For the clearest, directly documented long-term support, choose a Google Pixel 8 or later; Pixel 10 is on Google’s covered-device list. Google promises seven years of Android OS and security updates, counted from when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US—not from the day you buy it. Recent Samsung Galaxy S flagships are also reported to have a seven-year commitment, but confirm the exact model’s current US terms with Samsung before buying. Fairphone Gen. 6 is another reported option, with support through 2033, but its US availability is not established here.
Which Android phones are the best choices for long-term updates?
If you want a recommendation grounded in a clearly stated manufacturer policy, start with a Pixel 8 or later. Google’s current Pixel support documentation, checked October 25, 2026, says these phones receive seven years of OS and security updates. Pixel 10 is among the models listed as covered.
Recent Samsung Galaxy S flagships are worth checking as an alternative: a 2026 TechRepublic comparison reports seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. That report is secondary, however, and does not establish the promise for every Galaxy S model or every US carrier version. Verify the exact phone and its US policy before treating it as equivalent to Google’s directly documented commitment.
Fairphone Gen. 6 is a possible longer-support option. RottenWiFi reported support through 2033 in 2026, but US sales availability and regional terms are not established. Treat it as an option to investigate only if you can confirm it is sold and supported where you live.

How to choose among these options
For a buyer who prioritizes a clear, verifiable US support promise, Pixel 8 and later are the most straightforward starting point in this comparison. Google’s support page identifies the covered family and gives the clock anchor: first availability on the US Google Store. That makes it easier to turn a headline duration into a practical estimate of how much time is left for a particular model.
A recent Galaxy S flagship could be a close alternative if Samsung’s official terms confirm the reported seven OS generations and seven years of security updates for the exact US model. The qualification matters. A promise reported for recent flagships should not be generalized to every Galaxy phone, every generation, or a device sold by every carrier. Before choosing between a Pixel and Galaxy, compare the manufacturer’s model-specific wording rather than treating two broad family names as identical support guarantees.
Fairphone Gen. 6 is not yet a straightforward US recommendation on the facts established here. Its reported support through 2033 may attract someone who wants to keep a phone for a long time, but that end date alone does not establish that a US buyer can purchase the phone, receive service, or rely on the same regional terms. First confirm sales availability and the support terms that apply to your location.

For OnePlus and other brands, make the comparison device by device. A brand’s range can include different tiers, and the duration may vary between models. No official, exact-model US commitment is established here for those other brands, so do not rank them by an assumed brand-wide number. If the manufacturer’s current page does not clearly state both update types and the support period for the precise model, treat the duration as unconfirmed.
What does “long-term updates” actually mean?
A phone’s software promise has at least two separate parts: major Android version upgrades and security updates. Android Authority describes these as distinct types of support. A policy may give them different durations, so a single headline such as “seven years of updates” can obscure what is actually promised. Look for the number of Android OS upgrades and the duration of security updates separately.
Android OS upgrades
OS upgrades move a phone to newer major Android versions. They can bring platform changes and new capabilities, but a stated number of upgrades is not itself a guarantee that every new feature will work identically on every phone. Google’s original October 2023 announcement for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro described its seven-year commitment as including Android OS upgrades, security updates, and regular Feature Drops.
For Samsung, the 2026 TechRepublic comparison describes seven generations of OS upgrades for recent Galaxy S flagships. “Generations” is the important part of that claim: it refers to major OS upgrades, not simply the number of calendar years a buyer may own the phone. Confirm the official wording for the model you are considering, because the report does not establish every model’s terms or the start date used to calculate its support.

Security updates address vulnerabilities and are separate from major Android version changes. A phone can continue receiving security patches after its final major OS upgrade, or the promised durations can otherwise differ. Compare the manufacturer’s exact wording rather than assuming the two schedules match.
The distinction is useful when comparing two phones with similar headline numbers. One policy might specify a number of major OS versions while stating a different security-update term; another might describe a combined period. Write down both commitments separately. A long OS-upgrade promise is not a substitute for knowing how long security patches are scheduled, and a long security-update promise does not by itself tell you how many Android versions the phone will receive.
Feature Drops and other additions
Google included regular Feature Drops in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro commitment announced in 2023. That should not be read as a promise that every new Pixel feature will arrive on every covered model: a long support term does not guarantee identical feature availability or performance throughout the phone’s life.

Google’s announcement is useful context for what its Pixel 8 promise included, while the current Pixel support page is the clearest place to check the covered-device policy and its clock. Treat a promised update period as a statement about support duration, not as a guarantee that a phone will gain every capability introduced during that period.
How do I calculate how much support is left?
Start with the date that begins the manufacturer’s support clock, then compare it with the date you expect to buy or keep using the phone. For Pixel 8 and later, Google says the seven-year period starts when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US. Buying a phone later does not restart that clock.
- Identify the exact model. Do not rely on a brand name or product family alone. A policy can differ by model, tier, carrier, or market.
- Find the official support start date. For Pixels, use the model’s first US Google Store availability date, as specified by Google’s support policy.
- Check both support commitments. Record the promised OS-upgrade duration and security-update duration separately.
- Estimate remaining time from the start date. The headline term is not the same as the amount of support left on a phone bought later.
- Confirm the terms for the version you will buy. For Samsung, check the exact US model and carrier version with Samsung. For Fairphone, first establish US availability and applicable regional terms.
For example, if you are comparing a newer phone with an older supported model, do not assume the older one offers the full headline term from your purchase date. Use the model’s stated starting point, then estimate the remaining period from there. This is especially important for a used phone or a discounted model that has already been on sale for some time. The relevant question is not only “How long is the policy?” but also “How much of that period remains for this particular device?”
The same calculation should not be applied across manufacturers without checking their stated clock. Google gives a specific US Google Store availability anchor for Pixels. The cited Samsung comparison does not establish the exact start date for each model, and the Fairphone report does not resolve regional terms. If a source does not say when its clock starts, seek the manufacturer’s model-level policy rather than assuming the Pixel rule applies.
If a seller cannot point to a model-specific policy and start date, do not treat a general brand statement as a confirmed support term. The comparisons discussed here do not establish a single model-level promise for OnePlus or other Android brands.

A support commitment describes how long updates are promised, not necessarily the day each phone receives them. Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually; timing depends on the device and carrier, and an update can take a few weeks to reach a phone.
That distinction matters if you are comparing phones for security-sensitive use: an advertised support period is not a guarantee of simultaneous delivery to every handset. When an update has not appeared, check the device’s update information and carrier guidance before assuming the model has reached the end of its support term. The documented Google policy specifically warns that rollout timing varies.
Think of duration and delivery as two separate questions. Duration asks whether the model remains within its promised support window. Delivery asks when a particular handset receives an update that is being rolled out. A short wait does not, by itself, show that a support commitment has ended; conversely, being within a long support window does not mean every phone receives each update on the same day.
Google’s description is specific to Pixel rollout timing and says that carrier and device can affect when an update arrives. Do not assume that every manufacturer uses the same rollout schedule or delay. For a non-Pixel phone, check the relevant maker’s guidance for the exact device and carrier version.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is a custom Android operating system a substitute for manufacturer support?
Not necessarily. GrapheneOS says full security updates depend on the original equipment manufacturer continuing to issue them; its temporary extended-support releases cannot provide full patches. Installing a custom OS therefore does not automatically extend the phone’s full security coverage beyond the manufacturer’s update support.

If you are considering an alternative operating system, distinguish between the OS project’s own releases and complete device security maintenance. A longer-running project release schedule is not the same thing as full patches for the phone’s hardware and firmware.
This matters when comparing a phone’s official support term with a plan to install another operating system later. The project may continue publishing releases, but GrapheneOS explicitly cautions that complete security updates rely on OEM updates. Do not count a custom OS as an automatic replacement for a manufacturer’s ongoing security work, and do not treat temporary extended support as equivalent to full patches.
What does the evidence establish—and what remains uncertain?
Google’s current support documentation provides the clearest model-family commitment covered here: seven years of OS and security updates for Pixel 8 and later, with the clock starting at each model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. Google’s original October 2023 announcement adds that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro commitment included Android OS upgrades, security updates, and regular Feature Drops. The current page is the more useful reference for the clock and covered-device list.
The Galaxy comparison is promising but not equally direct. TechRepublic reported seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for recent Galaxy S flagships in 2026. The report does not settle Samsung’s exact current US model list, the support clock for each phone, or carrier and regional qualifications. Treat it as a reason to investigate a specific Galaxy S, not as proof of a universal Samsung policy.
RottenWiFi reported Fairphone Gen. 6 support through 2033 in 2026. That date is a secondary-source claim, and it does not answer whether the device is available in the US or what regional warranty and support terms apply. Those details need to be confirmed before presenting it as a practical option for a US buyer.
No comparative hands-on testing, long-term ownership results, or measured battery-life and performance figures are established by these policy statements. The update terms tell you about promised software support, not how fast a phone will feel years later, how its battery will hold up, or whether every future feature will run the same way. Likewise, no price comparison is established here. Compare current prices separately, but do not mistake a lower purchase price for more remaining software support.

Use this checklist to compare candidates without mistaking a broad marketing claim for a device-level commitment:
- Exact model and region: Confirm the precise device variant and that the published terms apply in the US.
- OS upgrades: Record the number of major Android version upgrades promised.
- Security updates: Record their duration separately; do not infer it from the OS-upgrade number.
- Clock start: Find the date the support period begins and calculate the time remaining at your expected purchase date.
- Delivery: Check whether the manufacturer says carrier or device differences affect rollout timing.
- Evidence: Prefer an official, current, model-specific manufacturer policy. Treat a comparison article as a lead to verify, not as a replacement for the manufacturer’s terms.
For a used or older phone, add one more check: establish the original support start date rather than relying on the date of resale. For a carrier-sold phone, verify that the policy applies to that exact version. For a phone sold in a different market, do not assume that US terms automatically transfer to it, or vice versa.
Also keep the update commitment separate from other purchase considerations. These facts do not establish a phone’s price, repair cost, battery endurance, performance, or the availability of particular features. Those may matter to your decision, but they are different questions from how long OS upgrades and security updates are promised.
On the evidence checked October 25, 2026, Pixel 8 and later have the strongest documented case in this comparison. Samsung is a credible candidate when its exact model-level US terms check out. Fairphone Gen. 6 requires confirmation of US availability and regional support before it can be a practical US recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does buying a used Pixel restart its seven-year update period?
No. Google anchors the Pixel support term to the model’s first availability on the US Google Store, not to a later resale or purchase. Ask for the model and check its original availability date before judging how much support remains.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will every new Android feature arrive on a phone for as long as it gets security updates?
No. An update commitment defines a support period, not identical feature availability across all models. Hardware capabilities and feature eligibility can differ even among phones that receive updates.
Can my carrier affect when my phone gets a security update?
It can affect rollout timing for Pixel updates: Google says timing depends on the device and carrier and that delivery may take a few weeks. That timing difference is distinct from the length of the promised support period.
Does installing a custom ROM guarantee full security patches after official support ends?
No. GrapheneOS says full security updates depend on continued OEM updates, and its temporary extended-support releases cannot provide full patches. Check the distinction between project releases and complete device security maintenance.
Which Android phone has the clearest long-term update promise in this comparison?
Google Pixel 8 and later. Google’s support documentation says they receive seven years of OS and security updates, measured from first availability on the Google Store in the US. Pixel 10 is on the covered-device list.
Does Samsung guarantee seven years of updates for every Galaxy phone?
That is not established here. A 2026 TechRepublic comparison reports seven OS generations and seven years of security updates for recent Galaxy S flagships, but verify the current official terms for the exact US model and carrier version.
Is Fairphone Gen. 6 available in the United States?
US availability and regional support terms are not established here. RottenWiFi reported support through 2033 in 2026, but confirm that the phone is sold and supported in your region before treating it as a US buying option.
How should I compare a phone’s update policy with its price?
Compare the current price separately from the support policy. The relevant support calculation uses the model’s official start date and the remaining OS and security-update periods; a discounted purchase does not restart that clock.
Are update policies a guarantee that a phone will perform well for seven years?
No. Update durations describe software support, not measured performance, battery life, or identical access to every feature throughout the term.
