If you need to curate or label AI training data, first check which “Sundial” you mean: the official documentation surfaced for this name describes an agentic analytics platform, not a data-labeling service. For annotation and dataset workflows, Intellabel, Toloka, Label Your Data, and HiveLabel are alternatives worth evaluating—but they serve different needs, and none is established as a universal best choice.
The practical decision is not simply which logo replaces Sundial. It is whether you need annotation software, human labor, synthetic labeling, dataset controls, or a managed combination. Confirm the vendor identity, define your acceptance criteria, and run a comparable pilot before committing.
Is Sundial an AI data-labeling platform?
Not according to the official Sundial documentation surfaced for this comparison. It describes Sundial as an agentic analytics platform that operates with a company’s data warehouse and LLM tooling, with agents for analysis, data quality, data modeling, and storytelling. The indexed documentation calls it “an agentic analytics platform that gives every decision-maker a world-class AI analyst, and every data team the accuracy and observability to trust the answers.”

That is a different category from tools that annotate images, video, text, audio, or other datasets for machine-learning workflows. An analytics agent may help people query and understand a warehouse; a labeling system creates structured examples that a model can consume. Those workflows can sit in the same wider AI program, but they have different users, outputs, controls, and buying criteria.

The documentation page could not be opened when reviewed, so treat this identification as a useful starting point, not proof that every product called Sundial has the same purpose. Confirm the exact vendor, domain, and product name before shortlisting or purchasing. A similarly named company may provide an entirely different service.
Sundial’s surfaced pricing result describes usage-based charges tied to data processed and queries answered, with pricing tailored to scale. It is not a current, verified quote and cannot be compared directly with labeling prices. Ask for the unit definition, included usage, storage treatment, and overage terms if you are evaluating that analytics product itself.
If the product you have in mind is the analytics platform, the four options below are not like-for-like replacements. They are candidates for the separate need of data curation and labeling. If you need both analytics and annotation, you may require two connected systems rather than one replacement.

What are the best alternatives to Sundial for AI data labeling?
For image and video annotation connected to dataset and model workflows, Intellabel has the clearest documented fit. Toloka is relevant when you want a configurable synthetic-labeling workflow; Label Your Data offers managed and self-serve routes; and HiveLabel describes human-powered marketplace and managed annotation services. These are different operating models, not a ranked list of interchangeable products.
| Option | What its reviewed materials describe | Most relevant when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intellabel | AI-assisted image and video labeling, video annotation and interpolation, active learning and monitoring, QA workflows, bring-your-own-model support, and higher-tier training and deployment features. | You want annotation alongside dataset and model workflows, especially for image or video tasks. | These are vendor-listed capabilities, not independently tested outcomes. Some features are tied to higher tiers; confirm which plan includes what. |
| Toloka | Configurable synthetic labeling: an LLM generates a label, and a separate LLM call checks it against quality criteria. | You have high-volume existing data and are prepared to use automated quality control instead of expert review in suitable cases. | The documented workflow applies to existing-data labeling nodes, not data-collection nodes. A separate LLM check does not establish label correctness. |
| Label Your Data | A self-serve platform as well as managed annotation; the company says it can work with commercial, open-source, or customer-built tools. | You want to choose between doing annotation in a platform and asking a provider to scope or manage it. | Its FAQ recommends the platform for simple computer-vision datasets and says a pilot can help scope cost and results. Those are the vendor’s own descriptions. |
| HiveLabel | A human-powered marketplace and managed services for data collection, labeling, tagging, enrichment, validation, and human review across computer vision, NLP, audio, and multimodal work. | You need people involved in annotation or review, or want to discuss a managed workflow across multiple data types. | The descriptions are vendor claims. Validate review mechanisms and project-specific service levels rather than assuming they apply to every engagement. |
There is no shared independent benchmark, comparable quality result, or common total-cost analysis in the reviewed material. A vendor’s feature list is useful for screening, but it does not demonstrate that the service will meet your accuracy, throughput, governance, or cost requirements. The sensible conclusion is a shortlist, not a universal winner.
How should I choose between an annotation platform and a managed service?
A platform gives your team a place to configure and run work; a managed service adds vendor-supplied labor or project execution. Some providers describe both routes, so decide based on who will define the task, perform labels, resolve edge cases, and own quality checks—not simply on whether a product has a “platform” label.
Choose self-serve software when your team can operate the workflow
A self-serve route can make sense when you have a stable annotation schema, someone who can configure projects and assess outputs, and enough ongoing work to justify operating the process. Your team must be able to write instructions, answer annotator questions, sample results, correct errors, and maintain versions as the model or taxonomy changes.

Intellabel lists software capabilities for annotation and dataset/model workflows. Label Your Data says its platform is recommended for simple computer-vision datasets. Those statements help identify candidates, but a pilot should establish whether your actual task is simple enough for your team and the product. A visually simple task can still become difficult when images contain occlusion, borderline classes, poor lighting, or inconsistent source metadata.
Consider managed annotation when the work needs people or project support
Managed work may suit teams that need help staffing annotation, handling review, or scoping an unfamiliar dataset. Label Your Data describes both managed annotation and self-serve software. HiveLabel describes marketplace and managed services, including collection, labeling, validation, and human review.
Ask each provider to specify which tasks its team will perform, which remain yours, and how disagreements or corrections are handled. Clarify whether the quoted service includes project management, annotator training, guideline updates, quality sampling, rework, and final export. A managed label may cost more than a software-only label while reducing internal coordination; measure both sides of that tradeoff.
Use a hybrid approach only when responsibilities are explicit
A workflow can combine software, human annotation, and automated assistance, but the combination is not automatically more accurate or cheaper. Put responsibility at each stage in writing: who generates initial labels, who checks them, who adjudicates disputed examples, and who approves the final dataset. A vendor’s mention of AI assistance or review does not answer those project-specific questions.
Hybrid processes can also create hidden handoffs. Decide where the authoritative version of an annotation lives, how corrections flow back to the source, and whether automated labels are visibly marked as provisional. Without those controls, a team can accidentally train on unreviewed output or mix labels made under incompatible instructions.
What should I compare before selecting a data-labeling vendor?
Compare providers against one representative task and one acceptance standard. The right choice changes with modality, schema, labor model, review needs, deployment constraints, and expected volume; a broad list of features cannot substitute for this fit check.
- Data type and task: Identify whether the work is image, video, text, audio, point cloud, or multimodal. Specify the exact output structure—for example, the relevant classification labels, box or polygon conventions, or other task-specific schema. Intellabel’s reviewed page focuses on image and video; Label Your Data and HiveLabel describe broader service categories. For video, also define frame sampling, interpolation expectations, and how objects are tracked between frames.
- Operating model: Decide whether your team needs software, managed annotation, marketplace labor, or a hybrid. Clarify who supplies workers and who manages the day-to-day project. Ask whether you can change the labor mix later without rebuilding the project.
- Label source and review: Establish whether labels come from human workers, synthetic LLM generation, or a mixed pipeline. Toloka’s documented workflow uses a second LLM call to check generated labels, and positions this as automated quality control instead of expert review for appropriate high-volume work. Treat that as a design option to test, not evidence that the output meets your quality target. Determine which examples receive human escalation and what happens when the checker and generator agree on a wrong answer.
- Quality and auditability: Define the acceptance criteria before work starts. Ask how the provider handles review, consensus, error correction, disputed cases, and traceability. HiveLabel describes several human-review mechanisms, but verify the mechanisms that would actually apply to your project. Request sample audit records showing who labeled an item, which instruction version was active, what review occurred, and when a correction was made.
- Data governance and deployment: Ask about data residency, access controls, private deployment options, sensitive-data handling, and retention or deletion terms. Intellabel lists enterprise security and deployment features; confirm the applicable tier and current contractual terms directly. If images or recordings contain personal information, establish redaction, least-privilege access, subcontractor controls, and deletion evidence before transfer.
- Cost at your workload: Compare software subscriptions, usage or per-label charges, managed-service quotes, volume assumptions, storage, and the effort needed for review. Platform credits or subscription prices are not directly equivalent to service estimates. Include setup, instruction writing, rework, exports, integrations, and internal quality labor in the model.
- Workflow and integration: Check import and export formats, API availability, model or pre-label support, version history, and how completed data reaches your training pipeline. A tool that labels quickly but requires manual conversion every batch may cost more in practice.
- Scale and change management: Ask how the provider handles bursts, new classes, changed schemas, and paused projects. Confirm whether existing annotations can be re-opened and migrated when guidelines change.
What quality pitfalls should buyers avoid?
Do not equate automation with accuracy. Synthetic labels and AI-assisted pre-labels can reduce repetitive work, but they can also reproduce systematic errors. Measure precision and completeness on the examples that matter to your application, including rare classes and ambiguous cases.

Do not accept a single aggregate score without seeing the denominator and sampling method. Ask how many items were checked, whether difficult examples were included, and whether the result reflects initial labels or post-correction output. For human workflows, clarify whether “review” means every item, a sample, consensus among workers, or an exception queue.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not compare a per-label rate with a monthly subscription as if they describe the same unit. One polygon can require substantially different effort from one classification, and a managed quote may include labor, project management, and rework that a software rate excludes. Normalize the task, volume, review level, and deliverables first.
Finally, avoid silently changing the schema mid-project. Version the taxonomy and instructions, identify the effective date, and quarantine batches produced under old rules until you decide whether they need remapping or re-labeling.
How can I run a useful pilot before committing?
Give each candidate the same representative sample, instructions, and acceptance criteria, then compare the delivered work and the effort your team spends getting it there. A pilot should answer practical questions about quality, workflow, and commercial scope—not merely produce a polished demo.
- Select representative data. Include routine examples and the difficult or ambiguous cases that tend to cause disagreement. Use data you are authorized to share, and settle the handling and access terms before uploading sensitive material. Include enough examples to expose class imbalance and edge cases, not just a convenient sample.
- Write the annotation rules. Define labels, edge cases, expected output, and what counts as an acceptable result. Provide the same instructions to each candidate so differences are less likely to come from different task interpretations. Include positive and negative examples and state how to handle “unknown,” “not applicable,” or partially visible objects.
- Set acceptance criteria in advance. Decide how you will assess correctness, completeness, consistency, correction effort, and traceability. Match the checks to the downstream use of the data; do not infer quality from a vendor’s feature list. Record thresholds separately for common and safety-critical classes when appropriate.
- Test the actual operating model. For a platform, have your team configure and operate the workflow. For managed service, establish who performs and reviews the work. For synthetic labeling, inspect the generated labels and the separate automated check, and decide whether that level of review is acceptable for the use case. Test the escalation path with deliberately ambiguous examples.
- Record the full work involved. Track not just labels delivered but also setup, instruction changes, exceptions, review, corrections, and handoff. These affect the real cost and whether your team can repeat the process. Note turnaround time, queue delays, export preparation, and any manual cleanup.
- Check governance in practice. Verify user roles, audit logs, residency, retention, deletion, and access to exported data using the pilot account or contract language. Do not rely solely on a sales presentation.
- Request a scoped commercial proposal. Make sure the proposal uses your task, volume, review expectations, and service model. Compare like with like and confirm contractual, security, and deployment details before expanding beyond the pilot.
Label Your Data’s FAQ says its pilot can take up to one week on average to complete and present. This is the provider’s own estimate, reviewed in 2026, not a delivery guarantee or a benchmark for the other options. Ask for timing and scope for your particular sample.
What does Intellabel cost?
Intellabel’s pricing page, reviewed on October 25, 2026, listed both pay-per-label rates and monthly plans. These are vendor-published figures and may change; they do not establish an equivalent workload or total cost across the other providers.
| Intellabel price item | Listed price | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Bounding-box label | $0.018 per label | Vendor-stated pay-per-label rate, pricing page reviewed 2026. |
| Polygon label | $0.03 per label | Vendor-stated pay-per-label rate, pricing page reviewed 2026. |
| Classification label | $0.02 per label | Vendor-stated pay-per-label rate, pricing page reviewed 2026. |
| Keypoint label | $0.03 per label | Vendor-stated pay-per-label rate, pricing page reviewed 2026. |
| Startup | $179 monthly, or a $149 monthly equivalent with annual billing | Vendor-listed plan price; includes 250 managed labels per month. |
| Growth | $999 monthly, or a $799 monthly equivalent with annual billing | Vendor-listed plan price; includes 2,500 managed labels per month. |
Before treating a per-label figure as a budget, ask what the vendor counts as one label, whether review or correction is included, and how the plan handles your expected volume and task mix. The listed managed-label allowances and plan prices do not establish that all annotation types or workloads consume the same effort. A video object tracked across many frames, for example, may involve different counting rules from a single still-image box.

Calculate at least three scenarios: initial labeling, labeling plus review, and rework after a schema or instruction change. Include storage, exports, integrations, and internal labor. The reviewed materials do not provide comparable public prices for Toloka or HiveLabel, and the Label Your Data material points readers toward a pilot to help scope cost and results rather than a common public rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option is the best fit for common labeling needs?
Use the documented workflow as a shortlist filter, then let a pilot settle whether the candidate fits your task. The distinction is especially important if your intended “alternative” is meant to replace analytics rather than perform data annotation.

- High-volume labels on existing data with automated checking: Consider whether Toloka’s synthetic-labeling workflow fits your risk tolerance and acceptance criteria. It is not documented for data-collection nodes and should not be treated as expert review. Reserve human escalation for cases where an automated check is insufficient.
- Simple computer-vision work where you want to compare self-serve with vendor-run work: Label Your Data describes both platform and managed routes, and says a pilot can help scope a project. Ask which route owns instructions, review, corrections, and delivery.
- Human-powered work across computer vision, NLP, audio, or multimodal data: HiveLabel describes marketplace and managed services that include labeling and review. Confirm the exact workforce, expertise, review arrangements, security controls, and service levels for the proposed engagement.
No reviewed source establishes a neutral winner or a common total cost across these options. Choose the provider that meets your own acceptance bar and governance requirements on the sample you expect to label, with commercial terms that match the actual workflow.
Questions to put in the contract
Before production work begins, document ownership of source data, annotations, derived artifacts, and project-specific instructions. State whether the provider may retain or reuse any material, how subcontractors are controlled, and when copies are deleted. Define service levels for turnaround, correction, support, and incident notification.
Also specify the export format, schema version, audit information, and treatment of incomplete or rejected items. If the task uses synthetic labels, identify which outputs are machine-generated, which receive human review, and what escalation standard applies. Contract language should match the workflow you tested, not a generic feature description.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does using a second LLM to check labels guarantee they are correct?
No. A second model call is another automated check, not independent proof of correctness. For high-impact or ambiguous labels, define a human escalation or adjudication route and test how often the automated process misses errors.
What should I ask about data ownership in an annotation contract?
Ask who owns the source data, annotations, derived artifacts, and project-specific instructions, and whether the provider may retain or reuse any of them. Also clarify deletion timing, subcontractor access, and what happens to copies when the engagement ends.

How do I keep labels consistent when my schema changes?
Version the annotation schema and instructions, record which version produced each dataset batch, and define how changed labels will be reconciled with earlier work. Ask the vendor whether its workflow can preserve that version history and support rework without silently mixing conventions.
Should I outsource annotation or run it in a platform?
Use self-serve software when your team can define the schema, operate the workflow, and perform quality checks reliably. Consider managed annotation when you need staffing, project coordination, or help with an unfamiliar dataset. Compare total internal effort, review responsibility, governance, and rework—not just the software price.
What is the biggest mistake when comparing labeling prices?
Comparing unlike units. Normalize modality, label type, volume, review coverage, correction policy, storage, export, and project-management effort. A per-label rate, monthly subscription, and managed-service quote may include very different work.
Can I use Toloka’s synthetic workflow for every dataset?
No. The documented workflow is for existing-data labeling nodes and is positioned for suitable high-volume cases where automated quality control can replace expert review. Test it on your own error-sensitive examples and define human escalation before production use.
How long should a labeling pilot take?
Label Your Data’s FAQ says its pilot can take up to one week on average to complete and present. That is a provider estimate, not a guarantee or a benchmark for other vendors. Timing depends on sample size, instructions, review depth, and data-access requirements.
The Bottom Line
Sundial’s surfaced official documentation describes agentic analytics rather than data labeling. For curation and annotation, shortlist Intellabel for image/video and dataset workflows, Toloka for tested synthetic labeling on existing data, Label Your Data for self-serve or managed computer-vision work, and HiveLabel for human-powered multimodal services. Run the same representative pilot, measure quality and total effort, and confirm security, ownership, review, and pricing terms before choosing.
