The best alternative depends on what you need to replace. For one cloud service that brings several quantum hardware providers together, evaluate Amazon Braket. For direct access to trapped-ion systems, consider IonQ Quantum Cloud; for an IBM-first workflow, evaluate IBM Quantum; and for Microsoft’s cloud ecosystem, consider Azure Quantum. These options differ in hardware, access and billing, so none is a universal substitute for Rigetti. In particular, annealing and analog simulation are different computation models from gate-model circuits.
What makes a cloud quantum platform a real alternative to Rigetti?
A useful alternative must fit the computation you want to run, the hardware you want to test, and the route through which you can obtain access. A platform name or qubit count alone cannot establish that its hardware will run your workload in the same way as Rigetti.
Rigetti is associated here with gate-model superconducting quantum hardware. If your code builds gate-model circuits, start by looking for another gate-model target and checking its supported operations, circuit limits, connectivity and execution behavior. A quantum annealer or an analog simulator may be useful for a different problem, but is not a drop-in replacement for a gate-model circuit backend.
Choose the workload model first
- Gate-model circuits: A circuit is assembled from operations, then run on a gate-model QPU or simulator. This is the closest comparison class for an existing circuit workflow.
- Quantum annealing: A specialized optimization model. It may suit some optimization formulations, but its programming and execution model differs from a gate-model circuit.
- Analog simulation: A system is configured to evolve under a physical model rather than executing a conventional sequence of circuit gates. This is a distinct approach, not simply another gate-model processor.
CloudBank’s hardware comparison, marked current as of September 2026, distinguishes superconducting and trapped-ion gate-model devices, neutral-atom devices, a neutral-atom analog simulator, and D-Wave’s quantum annealer. The distinctions matter more than a single headline hardware figure when deciding whether a platform fits a workload.

Separate the platform from the hardware provider
A cloud platform is the service surface through which you submit work, manage access and potentially use simulators or classical resources. The hardware provider supplies the underlying quantum device. Amazon Braket is an aggregator that offers access to multiple providers; IBM Quantum and IonQ Quantum Cloud are provider-linked routes. Azure Quantum also connects users to external providers. An aggregator’s target list and a provider’s direct service are therefore not necessarily the same offer, even when they point to related hardware.
Before committing, identify the exact target and access route, not just the platform logo. Check whether you can sign up directly, need an account with a cloud provider, must select a region, or have to apply for a research allocation. Access and availability can differ among direct, aggregated and programme-specific routes.
Which Rigetti alternative fits each kind of user?
For multi-provider experimentation, Amazon Braket is the clearest place to compare different hardware through one AWS service. For a specific vendor’s workflow, direct services such as IBM Quantum or IonQ Quantum Cloud may be a better fit; Azure Quantum is relevant when you want its cloud route and ecosystem. The right choice depends on your required modality, software and eligibility.
Amazon Braket: compare multiple hardware providers through AWS
Braket is worth evaluating if you want a shared service surface for several quantum hardware providers, simulators, hybrid algorithm execution and notebooks. CloudBank’s September 2026 comparison lists AQT, IonQ, IQM, QuEra and Rigetti entries through AWS Braket. That is a dated snapshot, not a promise that every target remains available to every account today.
Its main advantage for shortlisting is the ability to evaluate different providers and billing units within one service route. The trade-off is that an AWS account and the surrounding AWS services become part of the practical workflow and cost picture. Check the live target list and pricing before planning an experiment.

IBM Quantum: a first-party route for an IBM-centered workflow
IBM Quantum is a relevant first-party comparison if your work already uses IBM’s tools or you specifically want to evaluate IBM hardware. The available source material does not establish current plans, target availability or pricing, so do not rely on older access descriptions to decide what you can use now.
An NSF funding notice from 2022 described no-charge access to smaller IBM systems and paid pricing for larger ones. That notice is background, not a current access or price schedule. Confirm present terms directly with IBM before budgeting or choosing it as a replacement.

Azure Quantum is worth considering if your infrastructure or development workflow is already centered on Microsoft’s cloud, or if a supported external provider is the target you need. Its platform role should not be mistaken for a guarantee that a particular QPU is available to every Azure customer in every region.
An NQCC programme page lists IonQ, Pasqal, Rigetti and Quantinuum resources for that programme’s UK academic users. That list describes a specific access route, not a complete or universal Azure catalogue. The NSF’s 2022 account describes an expanding partner ecosystem and programming frameworks, but it should not be used as current target or price data.
IonQ Quantum Cloud: direct access to IonQ hardware and tools
IonQ’s service page lists direct simulator and QPU access, reservations, a hybrid environment and compatibility with Qiskit, Cirq, PennyLane, CUDA-Q, Braket and Q#. IonQ also points to partner routes including Amazon Braket and Microsoft Azure.

That range gives you more than one way to evaluate IonQ hardware, but a shared SDK does not make the routes equivalent. Direct IonQ access, AWS access and Azure access can have different pricing, availability and terms. Verify the exact target and route you intend to use.

Use compatibility as a starting point, not a portability guarantee
IonQ’s listed frameworks can make it easier to explore a familiar software workflow, and NSF’s 2022 description discusses several frameworks across platform routes. But framework support does not prove that the same code will have identical execution semantics on every target. Hardware targets can differ in supported operations and other constraints; validate your actual circuit on the specific device or simulator you plan to use.
For an existing Rigetti workflow, inventory your circuit construction, backend assumptions and any provider-specific code before selecting a destination. Then test a representative circuit on the candidate simulator or QPU, inspect what the target accepts, and compare output behavior under the execution settings you intend to use. This turns “supports my SDK” into a more useful question: “Can this specific target run my workload as intended?”
How much does cloud quantum access cost?
Quantum cloud prices use different units, so a low per-shot rate does not by itself identify the least expensive service. Amazon Braket’s official pricing page describes on-demand QPU charges per shot plus per task, hourly reservations, simulators, hybrid jobs and notebooks. The relevant total depends on the work you submit and the AWS services it uses.

Amazon’s pricing documentation, accessed October 25, 2026, says: “With Amazon Braket, there are no upfront charges, and you pay only for the AWS resources you use.” It also warns that AWS resources used alongside Braket, including S3 storage, may be billed separately. Treat the phrase as describing Braket’s billing model, not a claim that a complete quantum workload has no other charges.

CloudBank labels the following on-demand examples current as of September 2026. They are a dated comparison snapshot, not a guarantee of current rates; check the provider and AWS pricing pages before using them for a budget.

The hourly figures are examples on Amazon’s official pricing page accessed October 25, 2026; verify current rates before use. In particular, the reservation example names IonQ Forte, whereas the on-demand snapshot names IonQ Forte-1. Do not assume that two similarly named targets or routes have identical terms.
What a per-shot comparison leaves out
As a simple illustration of the billing arithmetic, one task containing 1,000 shots at the September 2026 CloudBank rates would produce a listed task-plus-shot charge of $23.80 for AQT IBEX Q1, $80.30 for IonQ Forte-1, $1.90 for IQM Emerald, $10.30 for QuEra Aquila or $0.725 for Rigetti Cepheus. These are calculated examples, not complete workload estimates: they exclude any additional AWS services, classical compute, storage, reservation costs or other charges, and they assume one task with the stated number of shots.

A reservation’s hourly unit cannot be compared directly with a per-shot price without estimating the actual usage pattern. Build a cost estimate around a representative workload and include the services needed to submit, store and analyze results.

How should you choose and validate a replacement?
Use a staged comparison: eliminate options that do not support the workload model, confirm that you can access the target, test software compatibility, then compare the full cost of a representative run.
- Describe the workload. Record whether you need gate-model circuits, annealing or analog simulation. For a Rigetti circuit workload, begin with gate-model candidates rather than assuming a different model will be interchangeable.
- Name the target, not just the platform. Identify the hardware provider and specific device you want to test. For an aggregator, confirm that the target is actually listed and available through your account and region.
- Check the access route. Determine whether the route is direct, through a cloud aggregator or through a research programme. Check account requirements, geographic limits, eligibility and any application process before relying on access.
- Validate your software path. Confirm that your framework and the selected target support the operations and execution behavior your workload needs. Run a representative circuit on an appropriate simulator or device before porting a larger application.
- Estimate the complete bill. For per-task and per-shot rates, estimate both task count and shots. For reservations, estimate the hours required. Include any separate cloud storage and classical services rather than comparing only the quantum-device line item.
- Recheck volatile details before deployment. Provider targets, regional access, queue or reservation terms and prices can change. Use current official provider pages for the exact route you intend to use.
When academic access changes the shortlist
Some users may have an access route unavailable to general customers. The UK National Quantum Computing Centre’s SparQ Access programme is for eligible UK academic users; it uses an application and review process and initially provisions access for three-month periods. Its programme page lists IonQ, Pasqal, Rigetti and Quantinuum resources for that programme. Check the programme’s eligibility and current terms rather than assuming those resources are available to every customer of a platform.
Which option should you shortlist first?
Start with the route that matches your primary constraint, then verify its target and terms. A practical shortlist looks like this:

- You need to compare several providers using one service surface: evaluate Amazon Braket, while accounting for AWS services and the exact billing unit for each target.
- You are committed to an IBM-centered workflow: evaluate IBM Quantum, but confirm current access, target and pricing directly rather than relying on the 2022 NSF notice.
- You want the Microsoft cloud route or an eligible programme allocation: investigate Azure Quantum for your region and target; treat NQCC’s UK academic resources as programme-specific.
- You want to evaluate IonQ hardware directly: compare IonQ Quantum Cloud with IonQ access through a partner route, checking the terms for each separately.
- Your problem is annealing or analog simulation rather than a gate-model circuit: consider platforms in that computation model only if the workload itself fits it; do not rank them as circuit-backend replacements on qubit count alone.
CloudBank’s September 2026 snapshot is useful for orientation, while Amazon’s official pricing page is the source to check for live Braket rates. IBM, Azure and IonQ terms should likewise be verified for the exact target and access route before choosing or budgeting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Rigetti through Amazon Braket?
Yes. CloudBank’s comparison marked current as of September 2026 lists Rigetti Cepheus through AWS Braket. Confirm that the specific target is still offered for your account and region before building a deployment around it.
Do I need a quantum computer at my office to use these services?
No physical QPU purchase is required for the cloud access routes discussed here: users submit work remotely to provider hardware or use cloud simulators. You will still need the accounts, software setup and any cloud resources required by the chosen route.
Does support for Qiskit or Cirq mean my program will run unchanged?
Not necessarily. Framework compatibility means a route is supported, but individual devices can differ in supported operations and execution constraints. Check the selected target’s documentation and validate a representative circuit.
