Google Perspective API is scheduled to remain available only through December 31, 2026, and Google stopped accepting new usage and quota requests after February 2026. Existing users should migrate now rather than wait for the shutdown. Azure AI Content Safety is the strongest broadly documented replacement for teams moderating both text and images. Amazon Comprehend DetectToxicContent is a practical choice for English-only text in AWS environments. OpenAI’s omni-moderation is the officially named successor for legacy OpenAI moderation models, while Hive and Sightengine are multimodal shortlist options that require direct checks of current pricing, languages and service levels.

None is a numerical drop-in replacement. Perspective returns a score for the perceived impact a comment might have on a conversation; alternatives use category confidence, toxicity probability or multilevel harm severity. A safe migration therefore replaces thresholds with an evaluated policy, not just a different API endpoint.

What is happening to Google Perspective API?

Perspective is on a fixed retirement schedule. Its official notice says, “The service will remain active until December 31, 2026.” New usage and quota requests stopped after February 2026, so a new project should not be designed around it even though existing credentials may continue working until the end date.

The API’s distinctive output is not a universal toxicity percentage. Its FAQ describes a machine-learning model that “score[s] the perceived impact a comment might have on a conversation.” That framing can include insults, threats, identity attacks and other behavior that changes a discussion, but the score is not directly interchangeable with a provider’s probability for a named harm category.

Plan for two deadlines: an engineering migration before your next release cycle and a final provider cutover before December 31, 2026. Keep the old integration only as a temporary comparison path, not as a fallback you expect to operate after the shutdown.

Which Perspective API alternative fits each workload?

The table separates documented capabilities from items that still require vendor confirmation. “Not stated” means the cited documentation did not establish a value; it is not evidence that a capability is absent.

How does Azure AI Content Safety compare with Perspective?

Azure is the most complete documented general-purpose candidate when your policy covers text and images. It analyzes harm categories, supports configurable blocklists and custom categories, and includes prompt-safety features. Its scoring system uses multiseverity levels 0, 2, 4 and 6 for hate, sexual, self-harm and violence categories rather than one conversation-impact number.

What Azure adds

  • Two modalities: text and image analysis in one service family.
  • Structured policy signals: separate harm categories and severity levels let you apply different actions to, for example, self-harm content and profanity.
  • Controls: blocklists and custom categories can encode terms or policy concepts that a generic model may miss.
  • Prompt protection: prompt-related safety features are relevant when users can submit instructions to a generative-AI application.

What changes in a migration

Do not map a Perspective score of 0.8 to an Azure severity of 6 by intuition. Build a labeled set from your own traffic, record both systems’ outputs during a parallel period, and choose Azure thresholds that achieve your required precision and review rate. Preserve the original comment-impact decision in your logs while you learn the new category semantics.

If your existing system used a single “reject above threshold” rule, split it into category-aware actions. For example, a high-severity self-harm result may require an escalation path, while a lower-severity insult might be queued for review. The right action depends on your safety policy, not on numerical similarity to Perspective.

Is Amazon Comprehend DetectToxicContent a good AWS replacement?

It is a sensible fit for English text moderation in an AWS-native application. The synchronous operation accepts a list of strings and returns category confidence scores together with an overall toxicity score. The current developer guide states that toxicity detection supports only English, accepts no more than 10 strings in one request and limits each string to 1 KB.

Design around the hard request limits

  1. Measure each input against the documented 1 KB-per-string limit before calling the service. Decide whether to reject, truncate with a visible policy, or split long content; never silently discard the end of a user’s message.
  2. Batch at most 10 strings per call and retain the original item order in your application. A queue should retry individual failed batches without duplicating moderation decisions for successful items.
  3. Store the returned category confidence values and overall toxicity value separately. They answer different policy questions and should not be collapsed into one field.
  4. Label non-English traffic before submission. The documented English-only scope means accepting another language as if it had equivalent model quality would create an unmeasured safety gap.

When to choose another service

Use a different candidate if your product must moderate images, needs languages other than English, or cannot accommodate the 10-string and 1 KB limits. Comprehend can still remain one stage in an AWS architecture, but a multilingual or multimodal policy requires an additional provider or a different primary service.

Can OpenAI omni-moderation replace a legacy text-moderation integration?

OpenAI’s official deprecation table names omni-moderation as the recommended replacement for the legacy text-moderation-007, text-moderation-stable and text-moderation-latest models. That makes it the most direct path for an application already built around those OpenAI model identifiers.

The cited material does not establish current category coverage, language performance, latency or pricing. Treat the replacement name as a migration direction, not as proof that its labels match Perspective’s perceived-impact score. Before production, run your representative evaluation set, inspect every returned field you intend to use, and verify the current service documentation for limits and retention.

A safe adapter pattern

Keep your application’s moderation interface provider-neutral. Have the provider adapter return the content identifier, model identifier, category results, raw scores, policy decision, timestamp and review status. This lets you test omni-moderation beside another provider without rewriting queue, appeal and audit components.

Are Hive and Sightengine suitable for text, image and video moderation?

Secondary 2026 comparisons describe Hive as covering text, image, video and audio, and Sightengine as covering text, image and video with self-serve operations plans. They are useful candidates when your queue extends beyond the text-and-image scope documented for Azure, but the available material does not establish their current prices, language matrix, quotas, service levels or benchmark accuracy.

Questions to resolve before signing

  • Which languages are trained and tested for each modality, rather than merely accepted by an input field?
  • Are video decisions frame-based, clip-based or available only after asynchronous processing?
  • What confidence or severity fields are returned, and can your policy distinguish uncertain results from clear violations?
  • What are the maximum file sizes, clip lengths, request rates and queue times?
  • Which regions process and retain content, and what deletion controls are available?
  • Are human review, appeals and audit exports included, metered separately or unavailable?

Request current answers from each vendor and test the same media set you use for other providers. A broad modality list alone does not demonstrate equivalent moderation quality.

How do Perspective scores differ from toxicity and harm scores?

Perspective’s score estimates perceived impact on a conversation. Other services may report the probability that a specific category is present, a confidence value for toxicity, or a discrete severity level. These outputs describe different events, so identical thresholds will not produce identical moderation decisions.

Signal type What it answers Typical policy use Migration caution
Conversation-impact score How likely is this comment to harm the discussion? Rank comments, hide likely disruptions or trigger review May combine several behaviors into one value
Category confidence How strongly does the model associate content with a named category? Apply category-specific rules Confidence is not a calibrated probability across providers
Overall toxicity score How toxic does the provider judge the text overall? Fast allow, review or block routing Can conceal which behavior caused the result unless category fields are also stored
Multiseverity harm level How severe is a named harm category? Escalate high-severity content and handle lower levels differently Discrete levels cannot be treated as a continuous Perspective score

Choose thresholds by measuring false positives and false negatives on your own content. Include quoted abuse, reclaimed slurs, dialect, code-switching, sarcasm, threats expressed indirectly and benign discussions of self-harm or violence. Preserve a human-review band instead of forcing uncertain cases into an automatic block.

How should I migrate from Perspective API before the shutdown?

  1. Inventory every dependency. Record API keys, endpoints, quota assumptions, languages, moderation attributes, threshold values, fallback behavior, dashboards and retention settings.
  2. Define the policy outcome. List what your product does for allow, warn, hold, block, escalate and appeal. This becomes the contract that a replacement must satisfy.
  3. Create a representative evaluation set. Sample real traffic under your privacy rules and add edge cases for each language, content type and policy category. Include both violations and harmless content so false positives are visible.
  4. Build a provider adapter. Normalize identifiers, raw responses, categories, severities, confidence values, errors and model versions into your internal schema. Keep raw provider output where governance rules permit it.
  5. Run providers in parallel. Send the same item to Perspective and one or more candidates while the old service remains available. Compare decisions, not just scores, and label disagreements for human adjudication.
  6. Calibrate thresholds and review routing. Select cutoffs that meet your acceptable block error and review volume. Use category-specific thresholds when the replacement exposes categories.
  7. Exercise operational limits. Load-test request size, batch size, rate limits, retries, timeouts and provider outages. For Comprehend, enforce the 10-string and 1 KB constraints before the request leaves your system.
  8. Verify governance. Confirm processing region, retention, deletion, access controls, audit fields and any contractual requirements for user-generated content.
  9. Canary the new provider. Route a controlled share of production traffic, monitor disagreement and appeal rates, and keep a reversible switch until the results stabilize.
  10. Cut over and retire safely. Announce the internal deadline, remove new dependencies on Perspective, archive only the records you are allowed to retain, and disable the old path before December 31, 2026.

What should I compare before selecting a provider?

A feature checklist is not enough. Score each candidate against the workload you actually moderate and document evidence for every decision.

  • Modality: text only, text plus images, or video and audio as well.
  • Language quality: whether your target languages are trained and tested, not merely accepted.
  • Score semantics: impact score, toxicity probability, category confidence or severity levels.
  • Accuracy trade-offs: false-positive cost, false-negative risk and performance on your domain’s slang and context.
  • Latency: synchronous response time for live posting versus asynchronous processing for media.
  • Limits: payload size, batch size, quotas, rate limits and retry behavior.
  • Controls: blocklists, custom categories, prompt shields, human review, appeals and audit exports.
  • Governance: region, retention, encryption, access logging, compliance terms and vendor lock-in.
  • Cost: free allowances, per-item charges, enterprise quotes, media processing and any review or egress fees.

Current prices and allowances are not established for the alternatives in the available material. Obtain a dated quote or pricing page for your region and forecast volume; do not carry Perspective’s cost assumptions into the new budget.

What failure modes should a migration plan cover?

Language mismatch

A model can return a confident-looking result on a language outside its documented scope. Detect language before moderation, route unsupported content to a tested provider or human review, and report coverage separately by language.

Threshold drift

Model updates can change score distributions. Store model identifiers and periodically replay a fixed evaluation set so a silent shift does not alter enforcement without review.

Oversized or batched input

Requests that exceed a provider’s limits fail before moderation. Validate size and batch count at ingestion, return a useful user-facing status, and make retries idempotent.

False positives and appeals

Context such as quotation, counterspeech and reclaimed language can look abusive. Keep a review path, expose an appeal mechanism where appropriate, and measure reversal rates rather than optimizing only for automatic blocks.

Provider outage

Decide in advance whether an outage should hold publication, allow with delayed review, or apply a conservative local rule. Queue the item and record the reason so operators can reprocess it after recovery.

Privacy and residency surprises

Moderation sends user content to an external service. Confirm region, retention and deletion behavior before enabling a new provider, and minimize the data sent when the policy does not require the full conversation or media file.

Which replacement should you start with?

Start with Azure AI Content Safety when you need documented text-and-image coverage, category-level harm controls and configurable blocklists. Start with Amazon Comprehend when your system is AWS-native, your moderation language is English, and the 10-string/1 KB request limits fit the ingestion design. Use omni-moderation when replacing legacy OpenAI text-moderation models, but validate its current fields and behavior. Evaluate Hive or Sightengine when video or audio is central, treating their published capability summaries as shortlist inputs until current vendor terms and test results are confirmed.

Whichever route you choose, make the migration decision from a labeled, representative evaluation set and a policy-level comparison. Perspective’s December 31, 2026 shutdown is certain; equivalent scores, language quality and operating costs from a replacement are not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my existing Perspective threshold work unchanged with another API?

No. Perspective measures perceived conversation impact, while alternatives may return category confidence, overall toxicity or discrete severity. Recalibrate against labeled examples and compare the resulting allow, review and block decisions.

How can I test multilingual moderation without overstating coverage?

Separate your evaluation results by language, dialect and code-switching pattern. Mark any language that a provider does not explicitly document or test as an uncovered risk and route it to another model or human review.

What data should moderation logs contain during a provider switch?

Store the content identifier, provider and model version, raw category or severity fields, policy decision, timestamp, error state and any human override allowed by your retention policy. This makes disagreements and model drift auditable without relying on a single score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can one moderation provider handle text, images, video and audio?

Some vendors advertise that breadth, but modality coverage does not prove equal language quality or latency. Confirm file limits, asynchronous behavior, category definitions and service levels for each modality you actually use.
