For most small retailers, a conventional point-of-sale system is a more predictable alternative to an AI checkout concept. Choose Square when keeping software costs near zero and getting a counter running quickly matter most; choose Shopify POS when your website and shop must share one catalog and order flow; choose Lightspeed Retail when purchasing and inventory control are the hard problems; and choose Clover when bundled terminals, payments, loyalty, reporting, and an app marketplace are worth obtaining a tailored quote. The right choice depends less on the word “AI” than on payment volume, average ticket, stock complexity, locations, and contract flexibility.
The figures below are vendor-published prices and terms checked on October 25, 2026. Rates, taxes, hardware availability, plan names, and country eligibility can change, so confirm the checkout quote for your region before signing.
What are the best non-AI checkout alternatives for a small retailer?
A standard cloud POS can handle checkout, payments, products, inventory, receipts, and reporting without an AI layer. Four established models cover the most common small-retail operating patterns:
| System | Best fit | Published software price | Published in-person payment rate | Hardware information | Contract information |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Square | Budget-conscious, mostly in-person shops, pop-ups, markets, and one-counter stores | Free POS plan: $0 per month | 2.6% + 15¢ for in-person tap, dip, or swipe | Reader hardware from $59 | No setup fee or long-term contract on the Free plan |
| Shopify POS | Retailers whose ecommerce site and physical store share operations | Basic: $39 per month; POS Pro adds $89 per month for each location | Basic lists 2.6% + 10¢ for in-person card transactions | Modern POS hardware is supported; exact bundle cost depends on the quote | Cancellation and equipment terms are plan and region dependent; verify before purchase |
| Lightspeed Retail | Inventory-heavy specialty retailers and multi-location operations | Basic $89, Core $149, Plus $289 per month when billed annually on the reviewed page | Not stated in the reviewed subscription details | Hardware cost is quote-dependent | Term and cancellation rules were not stated in the reviewed pricing details |
| Clover | Retailers wanting bundled hardware, payments, loyalty, reporting, and an app ecosystem | Plan and reseller quote required | Priced separately from subscriptions | Subscriptions can provide equipment with no money down; equipment terms vary | Subscriptions are non-cancelable according to the vendor FAQ |
“Best” changes with the bottleneck in your store. A free plan is not automatically cheapest if a higher per-transaction charge dominates your card volume, and the lowest subscription is not automatically best if staff cannot maintain accurate stock. Compare the recurring fee, payment charges, hardware, integrations, and exit terms together.

Why use a conventional POS instead of an AI checkout system?
A conventional POS gives you a defined product catalog, explicit prices, repeatable payment flows, and reports that staff can learn and audit. That predictability matters when a cashier must correct a barcode, issue a return, reconcile a drawer, or operate during an internet interruption.
AI-oriented checkout may promise automation, but it can introduce uncertainty about recognition accuracy, exceptions, data handling, and pricing. The four systems in this guide already cover the practical baseline: accepting payments, recording sales, managing items, producing receipts, and connecting online or in-store channels where supported. You can add specialized apps or services later without making experimental automation the foundation of the checkout lane.
Is Square the best low-cost alternative for a small retail store?
Square is the clearest starting point when you need a low upfront commitment and most sales happen at a counter, market stall, or pop-up. Its Free POS plan is $0 per month, has no setup fee or long-term contract, and includes POS functions, an item catalog, inventory, sales reports, online-store synchronization, a customer directory, and digital receipts.

- Software: $0 per month for the Free POS plan.
- In-person payments: 2.6% + 15¢ for each in-person tap, dip, or swipe, according to Square’s current product page checked October 25, 2026.
- Reader: hardware is listed from $59. Confirm the model, connector, country, and current availability before buying.
- Contract: the Free plan has no setup fee or long-term contract.
For a simple checkout, the $0 subscription leaves more cash for stock and fixtures. The per-transaction charge still needs modeling, especially if your average ticket is small because the fixed 15¢ represents a larger share of each sale.
What are Square’s strengths and limits?
Square is strong for quick deployment, a straightforward item list, basic inventory tracking, sales reporting, customer records, and digital receipts. Online-store synchronization gives a small shop a way to connect a basic web presence to the same product information.
The trade-off is depth. Square’s more advanced inventory and team capabilities sit in paid tiers, while the supplied pricing does not establish their exact features or prices. If you need complex purchasing, serial-number workflows, wholesale catalogs, or sophisticated multi-location controls, test the required tier before committing.
Who should choose Square?
Choose it when you operate one or a few checkout points, want to avoid a monthly software bill, and value portability. It is a sensible fit for makers’ markets, seasonal booths, small boutiques, and retailers whose ecommerce operation is modest. It is less compelling when purchasing and replenishment consume more time than checkout.
When is Shopify POS the better alternative?
Shopify POS is the natural choice when the web store and physical store are one business rather than two disconnected channels. Shopify describes cloud POS software that unifies in-store and online selling, supports more than 1,000 locations, and provides shared catalog and order operations across channels.
What does Shopify POS cost?
- Basic plan: $39 per month on the pricing page checked October 25, 2026.
- POS Pro: an additional $89 per month for each POS Pro location.
- In-person card rate: Basic lists 2.6% + 10¢.
- Payments and geography: confirm Shopify Payments availability, third-party-provider fees, taxes, and country-specific terms at checkout; the displayed plan and rates are region and plan dependent.
Shopify’s 10¢ fixed fee is lower than Square’s 15¢ in the cited in-person rates, but the monthly Basic subscription and any POS Pro locations change the break-even point. Do not compare only the transaction percentage.

Which omnichannel workflows does Shopify support?
A shared catalog makes buy-online-pick-up-in-store, in-store ordering, cross-channel returns, and inventory visibility easier to administer. Staff can work from the same cloud-based product and order records used by the website, reducing the need to reconcile two separate systems.
The supplied vendor description says every plan includes cloud POS software, unified in-store and online selling, multi-location support, omnichannel features, secure Shopify Payments, modern hardware, and extensibility. Whether your store needs POS Pro depends on the permissions, reporting, and in-store controls required at each location; verify the feature comparison for your country.
Who should choose Shopify POS?
Choose Shopify POS when ecommerce drives demand, product discovery, or fulfillment and the physical shop is an extension of that operation. It is particularly suitable for brands that need a single catalog, shared customer history, online orders picked up in store, or returns accepted across channels.
Choose another system if your website is incidental and your primary challenge is vendor purchasing, receiving, serial numbers, or deep stock controls. In that case, paying for an ecommerce-centered platform may add cost without solving the operational problem.
Is Lightspeed Retail worth its higher subscription for inventory control?
Lightspeed Retail earns consideration when inventory accuracy and purchasing workflows are more important than minimizing the monthly bill. Its published tiers are Basic at $89, Core at $149, and Plus at $289 per month when billed annually on the reviewed page.
What inventory features distinguish Lightspeed?
The feature matrix includes variants and stock across channels, purchase-order creation and receiving workflows, wholesale catalog access, ecommerce, loyalty, and advanced sales, staff, and inventory reports. Those tools address the work that becomes difficult when a retailer carries many SKUs, vendors, sizes, colors, serials, or locations.
Recommended Free Tools
Purchase-order synchronization can connect what you intend to buy with what arrives and what is available for sale. Variant-level stock helps prevent a website from selling a size or color that is already gone. Advanced reports can expose slow-moving items, staff performance, and stock patterns, but the value depends on disciplined receiving and catalog maintenance.
What is the cost trade-off?
At $89 to $289 per month when billed annually, Lightspeed has a materially higher recurring fee than Square’s Free POS and Shopify Basic. Payment processing, hardware, taxes, add-ons, and any contract terms must be modeled separately because the reviewed subscription figures do not state those amounts.
That fee can be rational when better purchasing and stock control prevent enough stockouts, over-ordering, or staff work to offset it. It is harder to justify for a small assortment that rarely changes, where a lighter POS already records sales accurately.

Who should choose Lightspeed Retail?
Choose Lightspeed when you have a specialty assortment, several vendors, wholesale access, multiple locations, or a web catalog that must stay synchronized with physical stock. Ask for a written quote that separates software, payment processing, hardware, onboarding, ecommerce, and cancellation obligations.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should a small retailer choose Clover for bundled hardware and apps?
Clover is aimed at retailers that want a terminal-centered package with payments, loyalty, reporting, and an app marketplace. Clover says its systems accept payments in person, by phone, and online, provide real-time reporting, support loyalty, and connect to hundreds of apps.
How Clover pricing differs
Clover subscriptions can provide equipment with no money down, but subscriptions are non-cancelable according to its FAQ and equipment terms vary. Processing fees are priced separately from the subscription, so a headline monthly payment cannot be compared fairly with a free software plan until you have the exact payment rate and hardware obligation.
Clover is sold through Clover.com and resellers, which makes the written offer especially important. Request the effective card-present rate, per-transaction fees, monthly software charge, equipment ownership or return rules, early-termination liability, statement fees, and app charges before signing.
Who should choose Clover?
Choose Clover when a bundled device, built-in loyalty, and an app marketplace reduce the number of vendors you must manage. Avoid treating “no money down” as a lower total cost: it may represent a continuing equipment or subscription commitment. If portability and easy cancellation are priorities, compare the contract language directly with Square’s no-long-term-contract Free plan.
How should you compare total cost rather than subscription price?
Calculate the monthly total from your own card sales and transaction count. A payment percentage applies to sales volume, while a fixed fee applies to each transaction, so average ticket size changes the result.
Use this calculation
- Record monthly in-person card sales, written as
card_sales. - Record the number of in-person card transactions, written as
transactions. - Calculate payment cost as
card_sales × percentage_rate + transactions × fixed_fee. - Add the recurring software subscription, hardware rental or installment, required apps, ecommerce charges, and any stated support or onboarding fees.
- Subtract only discounts that are guaranteed for your plan and period; do not count a temporary promotion as a permanent saving.
Illustrative rate comparison
Suppose, purely as a planning example, that a store processes $20,000 in in-person card sales across 500 transactions in one month. At Square’s cited rate, the payment calculation is $20,000 × 2.6% + 500 × $0.15 = $595. At Shopify Basic’s cited rate, it is $20,000 × 2.6% + 500 × $0.10 = $570, before adding Shopify’s $39 monthly subscription or any POS Pro location. This is arithmetic using the published rates, not a performance test or a promise of your actual statement.
Why average ticket matters
With a $10 average ticket, a 15¢ fixed charge consumes 1.5% of the sale before the percentage fee. With a $100 average ticket, the same fixed charge consumes 0.15%. A retailer selling many low-priced items should pay particular attention to the fixed component and batch transactions only where the payment rules allow it.

Online-first brand adding a shop
Shopify POS keeps the website, catalog, customer records, and physical orders in one cloud operation. Map pickup, shipping, returns, and inventory locations before launch so staff understand which channel owns each order.
Specialty shop with many vendors and variants
Lightspeed’s purchasing, receiving, variant, wholesale, and reporting capabilities align with this workload. Build a sample catalog with real vendor codes and a complete receiving cycle during evaluation; a feature list alone cannot show whether the workflow is fast enough for your staff.
Retailer seeking a device-and-app bundle
Clover may reduce the number of separate tools, but only a complete quote reveals the total commitment. Review the payment schedule and cancellation language with the same care as the hardware specifications.
Several locations
Shopify advertises support for more than 1,000 locations, while Lightspeed is positioned for multi-location inventory operations. Square and Clover may also support additional locations, but the supplied vendor material does not establish comparable limits or feature tiers. Ask each vendor how location-level pricing, stock transfers, staff permissions, and consolidated reporting work in your exact plan.

Which capabilities should you verify before buying?
The following checklist turns a sales demonstration into a comparable decision. Mark each item as included, add-on, limited, or not stated in the written offer.
- Payment processing: card-present percentage, fixed fee, keyed-entry rate, online rate, payout timing, chargeback handling, and any third-party-provider fee.
- Hardware: reader or terminal price, receipt printer and scanner compatibility, replacement policy, ownership at the end of a term, and support for your country’s payment method.
- Inventory: variants, bundles, purchase orders, receiving, stock adjustments, transfers, low-stock alerts, serial numbers, and inventory across channels.
- Online and in-store synchronization: shared catalog, pickup, shipping, cross-channel returns, customer records, and timing of stock updates.
- Locations: per-location charges, consolidated reporting, transfers, location-specific catalogs, and permissions.
- Staff controls: roles, approval requirements for discounts and refunds, shift tracking, and audit history.
- Reporting: sales by item, channel, location, staff member, tax, payment type, and inventory movement.
- Integrations: ecommerce, accounting, loyalty, marketing, fulfillment, and the app marketplace; verify whether each connection is native or paid.
- Connectivity: what can continue during an internet outage, how queued payments are handled, and what happens if a device loses power. Offline behavior was not stated in the reviewed vendor summaries, so obtain the exact policy.
- Portability and cancellation: data export format, account closure process, hardware return, notice period, automatic renewal, and early-termination charges.
How do you move from an existing checkout system?
A controlled migration reduces the risk of selling products with wrong prices or starting with an empty customer history.
- Inventory the current setup. List products, variants, barcodes, vendors, tax rules, locations, payment devices, integrations, and reports that you must retain.
- Clean the catalog. Remove duplicate SKUs, standardize names and units, confirm prices, and assign each variant to the correct location. Export a backup before editing.
- Choose the payment account. Confirm business verification, payout bank details, card-brand acceptance, and whether your existing processor can be retained.
- Configure permissions. Create cashier, manager, and owner roles; require approvals for discounts and refunds; and test the audit trail with a non-owner account.
- Connect channels. If you sell online, map product IDs and locations before enabling synchronization. Test pickup, shipment, cancellation, and a cross-channel return.
- Test hardware and connectivity. Run tap, dip, swipe, receipt, refund, barcode, tax, and end-of-day scenarios. Ask the provider to demonstrate outage behavior rather than assuming it.
- Run a controlled launch. Keep the old reports available, count opening stock, reconcile the first day’s payments, and record every exception for correction.
- Close the old service deliberately. Export financial and customer data, settle outstanding payouts, return leased equipment, and obtain written confirmation of cancellation.
What mistakes make a low-cost POS expensive?
Comparing monthly software only
Processing fees, per-location charges, hardware, paid apps, and contract obligations can outweigh the subscription. Use the calculation above with a normal month and a busy month.
Ignoring small-ticket economics
A fixed per-transaction fee is proportionally expensive on low-value sales. Include the actual transaction count, not just total revenue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Readers and printers can vary by country, connector, payment method, and generation. Confirm the exact model and return policy before purchasing, including any marketplace listing for a reader.

Assuming every plan has the same inventory depth
Square’s Free plan covers core inventory, while more advanced inventory and team functions are in paid tiers. Shopify’s POS Pro is an additional per-location charge. Lightspeed’s purchasing and reporting depth is tied to its paid tiers. Match the required workflow to the plan, not merely to the brand name.
Accepting a bundled contract without reading the exit terms
Clover’s FAQ says subscriptions are non-cancelable and equipment terms vary. For every provider, ask who owns the hardware, what happens when a location closes, and whether the payment account can be moved.
Launching without a reconciliation routine
Set a daily process for opening cash, card totals, refunds, discounts, payouts, and stock adjustments. A POS cannot correct an inventory or cash-counting process that staff do not follow.

What is the final decision framework?
Pick the smallest system that satisfies your operational constraint without creating a costly migration later. Square is the default for a budget-constrained, mostly in-person shop; Shopify POS is the default for a shared ecommerce and store operation; Lightspeed Retail is the default for deep inventory and purchasing; and Clover is the option to investigate when bundled hardware and app flexibility outweigh the need for easy cancellation. Before signing, compare each written quote using your real card sales, transaction count, locations, hardware needs, and contract horizon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a conventional POS work if my internet connection fails?
Offline behavior differs by product, payment method, device, and country, and it is not established in the vendor summaries used here. Ask the provider whether sales can be queued, whether card authorization is guaranteed offline, how long queued transactions remain valid, and how inventory is synchronized after reconnection.
Do I need POS Pro for every Shopify location?
No assumption should be made from the base plan alone. Shopify lists POS Pro as an additional $89 per month for each POS Pro location, so determine which locations actually need its controls and then confirm the feature matrix and regional terms before assigning licenses.
What should I export before closing my old POS account?
Export product and variant records, historical sales, tax reports, payout statements, customer data that you are legally allowed to retain, purchase orders, and gift-card or store-credit balances. Keep an unedited archive and verify that the new system can import the fields you still need.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is a free POS always the cheapest option?
No. A free subscription can still produce a higher monthly bill through payment percentages, fixed per-transaction charges, hardware, and paid add-ons. Calculate those items from your own card volume and average ticket before choosing.
What questions should I ask a Clover reseller?
Request the effective card-present and keyed rates, every fixed fee, monthly software charge, equipment ownership terms, app charges, automatic renewal, and the financial consequence of closing a location. Have the reseller identify which terms come from Clover and which are reseller-specific.
