AWS Student Rewards is a no-cost starting point for verified higher-education students who want structured cloud training. After you verify through AWS Builder Center and complete your profile, you receive a year of premium AWS Skill Builder learning. Participation badges can add AWS promotional credits and an exam voucher. The benefits are useful, but they are not a career by themselves: the strongest outcome comes from combining the training with hands-on labs, small documented projects, and deliberate certification preparation.
What are AWS Student Rewards, and why do they matter?
AWS Student Rewards is a benefit program inside AWS Builder Center. It connects a verified student profile with premium learning content, promotional cloud credits, and a pathway to an AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher. AWS introduced it as a way for students to learn, build, and participate in the Builder Center community rather than simply handing out an exam discount.
The program is intended for students aged 18 or older who are enrolled at an accredited higher-education institution. Access depends on successful student verification and the program’s applicable terms. AWS also says Student Builder Groups operate in more than 60 countries, but a group’s local availability does not override the verification and eligibility rules shown in your account.
AWS describes the broader initiative as a commitment of more than $500 million in cloud and AI training resources. That headline figure is a program-level commitment, not money deposited into an individual student account. Your personal benefits are the items shown in the reward ladder below.

Who can qualify, and what must be ready before you start?
You need to be an adult student at an accredited higher-education institution and be able to complete AWS’s identity and enrollment checks. Have these items ready before beginning:
- An AWS Builder ID that you can use to sign in to Builder Center.
- Current information about your college or university and your student status for SheerID verification.
- A completed Builder Center profile, because verification alone does not provision the learning benefit.
- Enough time to use the account during the reward and credit validity periods; promotional benefits are governed by the customer and Builder terms in force when they are issued.
If your institution, country, or enrollment status is not accepted by the verification flow, do not create duplicate accounts or submit altered documents. Resolve the mismatch with the verification instructions presented by SheerID or AWS support.
How do I get AWS Student Rewards?
The setup is mostly an account and verification process. Complete it in this order so the premium learning entitlement is attached to the correct profile.
- Create or sign in to an AWS Builder ID. Use the same identity for Builder Center and the learning services you intend to use.
- Open Student Rewards in AWS Builder Center. Start the student check and submit the information requested by SheerID.
- Wait for verification to complete. If details do not match your institution’s records, follow the on-screen correction or review path instead of starting another profile.
- Finish every required profile field. The profile-completion event is what triggers the initial Skill Builder benefit.
- Open Skill Builder and confirm access. Check that premium courses and labs are available before planning a study schedule around them.
- Return to Builder Center regularly. Badge definitions, participation activities, and redemption instructions can change, so use the current account view as the authoritative checklist.
What does each Student Rewards milestone provide?
The benefits are cumulative in the way AWS describes them: profile completion starts the package, while badge milestones add credits and an exam voucher.
| Milestone | Benefit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Verified student and completed Builder Center profile | 12 months of AWS Skill Builder Premium | AWS lists more than 900 courses, hands-on labs, certification preparation, and game-based learning; the published value is $449 for the 12-month period. |
| 7 Builder Center badges | $10 in AWS Credits | Promotional credit, not withdrawable cash; applies only to eligible AWS services under the applicable terms. |
| 14 Builder Center badges | An additional $20 in AWS Credits | This is added to the earlier credit milestone, subject to the same eligibility and account terms. |
| 21 Builder Center badges | $100 AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher | The voucher reduces the eligible exam fee; it is not cash and does not itself award a certification. |
AWS publishes a potential package value of $579 per student when the listed learning, credit, and voucher values are combined. That is a stated value of benefits, not a guaranteed cash equivalent or a promise that every student will use every component.

Are the AWS credits cash, and how should I use them?
No. AWS Credits are promotional account credits. They cannot be withdrawn or exchanged for cash, and they do not become a general-purpose gift card.
The Builder Center FAQ says eligible credits appear in the AWS Billing Console and can be applied to eligible AWS services. They are valid for at least 12 months from issuance under the applicable customer and Builder terms. Check the credit entry in Billing before launching resources: the exact expiration date, eligible services, and account conditions shown there control your balance.

A sensible way to spend a small credit balance
- Choose one project with a defined monthly ceiling instead of opening several unrelated services.
- Set an AWS Budget and billing alerts before deploying anything that can run continuously.
- Record the region, instance or function size, storage class, and expected runtime in your project notes.
- Delete test resources after each lab and verify that attached storage, public IPs, snapshots, and logs are not left behind.
- Review the Billing Console after a deployment so you learn how usage maps to charges while the promotional balance is still available.
Credits are most valuable when they help you observe a real architecture in operation. They should not be treated as permission to leave production-like resources running without monitoring.
What is the $100 AWS voucher, and does it make me certified?
The highest badge milestone provides an AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher worth $100 toward the eligible exam. It is an exam-payment benefit, not a cash award, and passing the exam is still required to earn the certification.
When the voucher becomes available, open its redemption details in Builder Center and read the current conditions before booking. Confirm the exam name or code, expiration date, testing-region rules, and whether the voucher is single-use. Apply it through the certification scheduling flow exactly as instructed; do not assume that a voucher issued for one exam can be transferred to another.

Prepare before scheduling. A foundational exam tests broad understanding of cloud concepts, security, technology, and billing rather than one narrow programming stack. Use the premium preparation content, take timed practice assessments, and keep a list of concepts you can explain without notes. The voucher lowers the financial barrier, but it does not replace study time or hands-on evidence.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I learn AWS if my college does not offer AWS Academy?
Yes. AWS Academy is institution-led, while AWS Educate is the self-paced route for beginners when an Academy course is not available. Student Rewards can complement either route but does not require your school to run an Academy class.
| Route | Who controls access | Labs and learning style | Certification and credit angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Student Rewards through Builder Center | Verified higher-education student and AWS account | Premium Skill Builder courses, hands-on labs, certification preparation, and game-based learning after profile completion | Badge-based promotional credits and a Foundational exam voucher; no cash payout |
| AWS Academy | Your college or an instructor participating in Academy | Institution-led curricula spanning foundational, associate, data, and machine-learning topics; Learner Labs can support educator-designed assignments and more than 100 AWS services | Structured coursework and lab access; any certification exam purchase is handled separately unless your institution states otherwise |
| AWS Educate | Individual learner | Free, self-paced beginner resources and hands-on learning; AWS says you can begin without an Amazon account | Training route rather than a Student Rewards credit or voucher ladder |
If Academy is unavailable, start with Educate or the Skill Builder entitlement attached to Student Rewards. If your instructor offers Academy, use the Learner Lab for guided assignments and use Builder Center for additional self-directed practice and community participation.
What should I do during my first year?
A year of premium access is long enough to build a foundation, test several services, and produce a small portfolio if you sequence the work instead of jumping between random courses.
- Weeks 1–4: establish fundamentals. Study compute, storage, databases, networking, identity and access management, security, monitoring, and pricing. For each topic, write a short explanation in your own words and identify one service that demonstrates it.
- Weeks 5–8: practice guided tasks. Use Skill Builder hands-on labs or an AWS Academy Learner Lab. Repeat a lab after reading the solution so you can recreate the result without copying every click.
- Months 3–5: build the first project. Choose a small, observable workload such as a static site with a simple data component, a scheduled automation, or a basic serverless API. Keep the architecture intentionally narrow so you can explain every service.
- Months 4–7: participate consistently. Earn Builder Center badges through legitimate activities such as publishing useful work, commenting constructively, and sustained engagement. Read the current badge definitions in your account; do not assume that an old community post still describes today’s requirements.
- Months 6–8: build a second project. Change one major design choice—such as managed compute versus a virtual server, or relational versus NoSQL storage—and document why you chose it, what you measured, and what you would change at a larger scale.
- Months 8–10: audit your portfolio. Add architecture diagrams, setup instructions, security decisions, cost controls, screenshots or logs, and a troubleshooting section. Remove credentials, personal data, and unused resources from public repositories.
- Months 10–12: prepare for certification. Map your weak areas to the foundational exam objectives, complete practice assessments under time pressure, and use the voucher only after you can explain the missed concepts and reproduce basic tasks.
- Throughout the year: keep an evidence log. Record lab names, project dates, design changes, failures, fixes, and the cloud concepts demonstrated. This log makes interviews easier because you can discuss decisions rather than recite service definitions.
How can I earn Builder Center badges without undermining my account?
Badges are tied to participation, not merely to watching courses. The program guidance points to activities such as publishing, commenting, and sustained engagement, but the exact qualifying actions should be read in your current Builder Center account.

Prioritize useful contributions: publish a clear lab explanation, explain a troubleshooting step, or ask a focused question that another learner can answer. Avoid repetitive comments, copied material, artificial activity, or attempts to manipulate a milestone. Even when an action appears to count, low-quality participation does not improve your portfolio and could conflict with community rules.
Capture the badge name and the activity that earned it in a private log. If a badge does not appear, check whether the action was completed while signed in to the verified Builder ID, whether moderation is pending, and whether the activity’s definition has changed. Use the account’s current status rather than screenshots from another student.

Project 3: a cost-and-reliability comparison
Implement the same small requirement with two different service patterns. Compare operational effort, scaling behavior, security boundaries, and estimated cost using the AWS pricing information available for your region. The point is not to claim a universal winner; it is to show how you make a context-specific choice.
For every project, publish a README with the goal, architecture diagram, prerequisites, deployment steps, cleanup commands, security notes, cost assumptions, and known limitations. Include troubleshooting notes that show what failed and how you isolated the cause.
What problems commonly block students, and how can they fix them?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Verification is rejected or remains pending | Your submitted institution or identity details do not match the verifier’s records. | Review spelling, enrollment information, and document requirements; use the provided review path instead of creating another account. |
| Premium Skill Builder is not visible | The profile is incomplete, or you are signed in with a different Builder ID. | Complete every profile field, sign out and back in to the verified identity, then check the entitlement again. |
| A badge milestone is not credited | The activity is still being processed, did not meet the current definition, or occurred under another identity. | Compare the activity with the current badge description and retain proof of completion before contacting support. |
| A credit balance does not reduce a bill | The service, account, region, or charge is outside the promotional credit’s eligibility. | Open the credit details and Billing Console entry; confirm eligible usage and the expiration date before changing the workload. |
| A project costs more than expected | Resources, storage, logs, or networking components were left running. | Use budgets and alerts, inspect each service’s resources, remove test assets, and record the cleanup procedure in the project README. |
| The exam feels harder than the course quizzes | You memorized terminology without practicing scenario-based decisions. | Review objectives by domain, explain trade-offs aloud, and revisit labs for the services behind each missed question. |
How should I present Student Rewards to an internship or entry-level employer?
List the program as a learning pathway, not as a substitute for experience. State that you completed verified student training, then point to the projects, labs, and certification result that demonstrate what you can actually do.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is AWS Student Rewards available to students outside the United States?
The program is not limited to a single country in the published description, and AWS reports Student Builder Groups in more than 60 countries. Actual eligibility and verification still depend on your institution, location, and the terms shown in Builder Center, so check the enrollment flow for your account rather than relying on another student’s experience.
Can I use the learning benefit with an AWS Academy class?
Yes. Academy and Student Rewards serve different purposes: an instructor can use an Academy Learner Lab for assigned work while you use your Builder Center entitlement for additional self-paced courses and preparation. Keep the identities and lab instructions aligned so you know which account owns each resource.
How do I keep portfolio projects safe to publish?
Use synthetic data, remove access keys and tokens, restrict permissions, and include a cleanup procedure. Before publishing, inspect repository history and configuration files for credentials, then verify that public endpoints and storage objects expose only the content you intend to demonstrate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat if the badge requirements shown online differ from my Builder Center account?
Treat the definitions and status displayed in your current Builder Center account as authoritative. Community posts and screenshots can describe an earlier activity set, so compare the date and wording before assuming a completed action should count.
