ASUS ROG GL753VE: At First Glance

The ASUS ROG lineup is specifically for gamers and that is not so hard to see since ROG means “republic of gamers”. Since ASUS introduced the ROG lineup into the gaming laptop market, it has emerged as one of the best in that category.

In this review, we will discuss the ASUS ROG GL753VE, which was released in 2017 as a successor to the ASUS ROG Strix GL553VE. Meanwhile, the ASUS ROG GL753VE does not look so much different from its predecessor.

However, it features some hardware improvements, which we will talk about in the subsequent sections of this review. Before we do that, you should be aware that this laptop is not cheap.

Precisely, it had a starting price of $2,499.11 in April 2022 when I wrote this review. Having said that, let us proceed to find out more about this laptop.

ASUS ROG GL753VE: Design, Dimension, and Weight

Typical gaming laptops have a distinctive, aggressive design such that, by merely looking at them, you can easily tell that they are for gaming. The ASUS ROG GL753VE follows that design pattern as well.

It is bulky, thick, and adorned with colorful illuminations. Its chassis is made of aluminum and comes in just a black color.

On the lid of the laptop, you will find is a brushed metal surface. You will also find a ROG logo at the center of the lid, adorned to its right and left by two long vertical grills.

The logo and grills are made of a bright orange accent which is all illuminated. At the lower edge of the lid, you will find a “REPUBLIC OF GAMERS” imprint in white.

Meanwhile, the logo and grills are not the only features on this laptop with orange accents. The rubber stands and air vent, which are located at the bottom of the laptop, are also in bright orange accents, but they are not illuminated.

When opening the lid, you will feel the impact of the sturdy hinges that hold the lid to the laptop’s base. That is because the hinges are quite stiff; hence, you will need two hands to open the lid.

When you finally get around to opening the lid, the first thing you will probably notice is the 17.6-inch display. The screen size is pretty big and will make your gaming sessions more immersive.

The display has a Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution, which is definitely not the best. However, the display is satisfactorily sharp, so you will enjoy the display quality of this laptop.

In addition to that, the display is also made of an IPS panel. Thankfully, IPS panel displays are well known for their wide viewing angles.

Therefore, when you view the display from acute angles, you will still see the display content clearly. Another impressive display feature of this laptop is its 16:9 aspect ratio.

This implies that the ratio of the display width to its height is 16 to 9. Therefore, more content will fit into the display’s width.

Overall, the ASUS ROG GL753VE’s display is impressive. However, I am not impressed by the thick bezels that surround it.

Nonetheless, on the top bezel, you will find an HD webcam that is useful for video calls. Meanwhile, on the bottom bezel, you will find another ”REPUBLIC OF GAMERS” imprinted.

Moving away from the display and its bezels, let us proceed to the laptop’s deck. Although the deck is made from plastic, you will hardly notice because it looks like the brushed aluminum on the lid.

However, the deck registers fingerprints easily. The first noticeable feature on the deck is the eye-catching keyboard.

The keyboard has a nice layout and the keys have a travel distance of 2.1 mm which is deep enough to deliver nice clicky feedback. By key travel distance, I mean how deep a key goes down when fully pressed.

The long key travel distance of the ASUS ROG GL753VE makes it comfortable to type with. Also, the keyboard features an RGB backlight as another gaming laptop aesthetic as most gamers love to see the colorful lights radiating from their keys.

Impressively, the backlight can be customized to your taste via the Aura Core app.

Below the keyboard, you will find the small-size integrated touchpad, which is located slightly to the left of the palm rest. The integrated buttons are pretty stiff, so you will be better off with an external mouse instead.

You will also find another ROG logo at the right edge of the palm rest.

Moving on, the ASUS ROG GL753VE has two speakers located at the front. These speakers would have been hidden if not for the slanted edge of the laptop’s front and the orange accents they are outlined with.

Thankfully, the speakers are sufficiently loud and have a decent amount of bass. In between the two speakers, you will also find an SD card slot on this laptop.

Meanwhile, the right side of the laptop has two USB 3.0 Type-A ports and a DVD Super Multi drive. Still, there are more ports on the right side of the laptop.

These ports include an Ethernet port, HDMI port, USB 2.0 port, USB 3.0 Type-A port, and USB 3.1 Type-C port. You will also find more air vents on the right side of the laptop which is also in orange outline.

Before we conclude this section, let’s talk about the dimension and weight of this laptop. Speaking of which, the ASUS ROG GL753VE weighs 3000 g and has a dimension of 415 x 273 x 32 mm (W x D x H).

From the figures above, the ASUS ROG GL753VE is clearly not a lightweight laptop, nor is it a portable one.

In comparison with its predecessor – ASUS ROG Strix GL553VE – the ASUS ROG GL753VE is heavier. This is because the ROG Strix GL553VE weighs only 2500 g.

Also, the ASUS ROG GL753VE is heavier than the ROG Zephyrus S17 GX701, which weighs 2600g. Considering how heavy the ASUS ROG GL753VE is, it might pose some challenges regarding the ease of carrying it around.

In conclusion, the ASUS ROG GL753VE has a solid and aggressive design which is typical of gaming laptops. It is unsurprisingly bulky and heavy too.

Based on that. I will be rating the ASUS ROG GL753VE nine out of ten in this design section of the review.

ASUS ROG GL753VE: Processor (CPU) Performance

As a gaming laptop, the ASUS ROG GL753VE is expected to deliver high-end processing power, and thankfully, its processor’s spec doesn’t disappoint. It runs on an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor with a base frequency of 2.80 GHz, which can be boosted to a frequency of 3.80 GHz.

This processor is quad-core and it has a 6 MB cache memory as well. Because the Core i7-7700HQ is a powerful processor, it should handle most processing tasks with ease.

However, to confirm this laptop’s processor performance, I will be sharing its result in the Cinebench R15 test. In case you don’t know, Cinebench R15 evaluates the single-core and multi-core performances of a computer’s processor.

By single-core performance, I am referring to how well the processor performs when only one of its cores is utilized. Meanwhile, multi-core performance is how well the processor fares when all its cores are used (four cores in the case of this laptop).

In both cases (single-core and multi-core), the higher the score, the better the processor performance. That said, the ASUS ROG GL753VE had a single-core score of 159 points.

Meanwhile, it had a multi-core score of 738 points. In comparison, the ASUS ROG GL753VE performed better than the Acer Predator 17 G9 in both tests.

Specifically, the Acer Predator 17 G9 scored 141 points in the single-core test and 656 points in the multi-core test. However, it runs on a less powerful Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor.

Based on the ASUS ROG GL753VE’s performance in the test, I will rate it eight out of ten in this processor section of the review.

ASUS ROG GL753VE: Memory (RAM) Performance

The ASUS ROG GL753VE has two memory slots for a DDR4 SDRAM. This laptop ships with a base memory size of 8 GB, which you can increase to 32 GB.

This implies that each slot can accommodate a memory size ranging from 8 GB to 16 GB. However, even with the least 8 GB memory size, the ASUS ROG GL753VE is powerful enough to perform some respectable amount of multitasking.

Therefore, to make your laptop a multitasking beast, you can buy a model with larger RAM capacities. For this review, we will focus on a model of the ASUS ROG GL753VE with 16 GB RAM.

In terms of multitasking, the laptop should open up to 20 Chrome browser tabs. You can also stream YouTube videos in some of these browser tabs without getting worried about slowdowns.

Furthermore, you will not have any delay in switching from one tab to another. For a better evaluation of the laptop’s memory performance, I will share its result in the PCMark 8 benchmark test.

PCMark 8 is a benchmark tool for testing the memory performance of computers. In similarity with the Cinebench test, a higher score in the PCMark 8 test denotes better performance.

With that being said, the ASUS ROG GL753VE scored 5171 points in the benchmark test. However, this score falls behind that of the Nexoc G739, which scored 5243 points.

In conclusion, the memory performance of the ASUS ROG GL753VE is decent, although it performed slightly below its competitor. Hence, I will rate it eight out of ten in this memory section.

ASUS ROG GL753VE: Storage Option and Performance

You can get the ASUS ROG GL753VE in two storage options – a 5400 RPM SATA HDD or a SATA 3 SSD. The HDD storage option supports a maximum storage capacity of 1 TB.

Meanwhile, the SSD storage option supports a maximum storage capacity of 128 GB. Despite the significant difference between the storage capacities of these two storage options, I am not surprised.

This is because it is a known fact that SSDs have fast storage speed but they are mostly limited by their storage capacity. Meanwhile, HDDs are slower but well known for their ample storage capacities.

Therefore, in light of that, you will know which storage option to go for based on your need. Thankfully, the ASUS ROG GL753VE also has an SD card reader that you can use for external storage expansion.

For performance evaluation, I will focus on a model of this laptop with a 1 TB HDD while sharing its result in a Crystaldiskmark test. Crystaldiskmark is a benchmark test that measures the read and write speeds of storage disks to determine their performance.

For your information, a computer’s read speed shows how long it takes to open a file. On the other hand, the write speed measures how long it takes to save a file.

As you might have guessed, higher read and write speeds in this test also mean better performance.

In the test, the ASUS ROG GL753VE had a read speed of 104 MBps and a write speed of 99 MBps. However, to see how well it performed with respect to other laptops, I will compare it with the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75C4 VX15.

Specifically, the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75C4 VX15 had a read speed of 101.5 MBps and a write speed of 106 MBps. From the comparison, the ASUS ROG GL753VE has a higher read speed.

Therefore, it will open files faster than the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75C4 VX15. Meanwhile, the Acer Aspire VX5-591G-75C4 VX15 has a higher write speed.

Hence, it will save files faster than the ASUS ROG GL753VE.

Nonetheless, I will be rating the ASUS ROG GL753VE a seven out of ten in this section.

ASUS ROG GL753VE: Graphics Card Performance

The ASUS ROG GL753VE comes with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card. This GPU has a base frequency of 1290 MHz and a boost frequency of 1392 MHz.

Because the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is a dedicated graphics, it has 4 GB GDDR5 video RAM.

For its gaming performance, this laptop is capable of playing Rise of the Tomb Raider (2016) smoothly at 37 fps. Not only that, but it can also play Doom (2016) smoothly at 62 fps.

Impressively, the laptop played these games at ultra graphics settings. For more information about the graphics performance of the ASUS ROG GL753VE, let’s look at its performance in a 3DMark test.

3DMark is a benchmark test that evaluates the graphics rendering ability of a computer. In similarity with every other benchmark test we have discussed in this review, a higher score in the 3DMark test means better performance.

That said, the ASUS ROG GL753VE scored 7531 points. In comparison, the Acer Predator 17 G9 performed better with a score of 7594 points.

However, the Acer Predator uses a better NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card. Considering all I have said in this section of the review, I have decided to rate the ASUS ROG GL753VE an eight in this section of the review.

ASUS ROG GL753VE: Battery Life and Performance

The ASUS ROG GL753VE comes with 4 cell 48 WHr Li-ion battery. However, ASUS did not tell us how long this battery would last on a charge.

However, it is common knowledge that gaming laptops usually have short battery life. Nonetheless, I am hopeful that the ASUS ROG GL753VE will be different.

Now, let us consider a web surfing test carried out by laptopmedia.com to see how long the battery lasted. In the test, the ASUS ROG GL753VE lasted 4 hours and 22 minutes.

However, you can expect that the battery will even drain faster than that if you perform more intensive tasks. For instance, while gaming, the battery lasted only 1 hour and 13 minutes.

Therefore, to enjoy gaming on this laptop, you might have to leave the ASUS ROG GL753VE plugged into power. In conclusion, due to the poor battery life of this laptop, I will rate it a seven out of ten in this section.
