ASUS EeeBook X205TA: At First Glance
ASUS, having started the netbook trend back in 2007, has been relentless in delivering a full Windows experience for budget laptops. As a means of carrying on with the netbook trend, ASUS released the EeeBook X205TA.
The ASUS EeeBook X205TA is a portable budget laptop that offers a full Windows experience at a very affordable price. In fact, when the laptop was released, it came off as one of the best laptops for such a low price.
To give more details, as of the time I wrote this review in December 2021, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA had a starting price of $229.95. Moreover, despite its affordable starting price, this laptop comes with decent components that have the ability to handle day-to-day computing tasks.
However, a laptop this cheap can’t have it all – thus, there should be a few flaws. Hence, to find out more about this laptop and its flaws, you will have to read on!
ASUS EeeBook X205TA: Design, Dimension and Weight
In terms of design, the ASUS X205TA features the simple yet refined look that a few expensive laptops have. Impressively, this laptop also comes in four alternative colors that are nothing short of artistic brilliance.
Specifically, you can get the ASUS EeeBook X205TA in white, gold, red, or navy blue color. It is important to note that this review is based on the ASUS EeeBook X205TA laptop with white color.
That said, the streamlined plastic chassis of the laptop features soft, rounded edges with a smooth matte finish. However, the laptop tends to attract fingerprints quickly.
On a positive note, the laptop features a stylish ASUS logo printed in stainless steel on its lid. Although the logo is the only thing you will find on the lid, it still gives the laptop a refined simple look.
Moving on to the interior, this ASUS laptop features an 11.6-inch display with HD (1366 x 768) resolution. Unfortunately, this HD display is surrounded by somewhat thick bezels
Nevertheless, at the top bezel, you will find a webcam neatly placed at the center. However, this webcam is an outdated VGA webcam.
Hence, the webcam offers blurry outlines, poor focus, and unnatural color that would end up ruining every picture. In my opinion, an HD webcam would have been better.
It is worth mentioning that at the bottom bezel, you will see an ASUS logo finely inscribed in the center.
Now back to the display, the laptop’s 11.6-inch display offers a decent but not exceptional picture quality and viewing experience. The reason behind this is that the display is made with a TN panel.
TN panels are considered inferior when placed side by side with other display panels like the IPS display panel. This is due to the fact that TN panels offer limited viewing angles.
As most readers know, limited viewing angles lead to poor color accuracy and pale contrasts, when viewing from the sides.
That said, now let us quickly take a look at the base of the laptop. At the base, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA features a well-spaced chiclet-style keyboard.
This keyboard features white keys with black letterings on top. However, the letterings on the keys are not printed, rather they are pasted.
This is a drawback for the laptop’s keyboard because, after long usage, the letterings will probably rub off. Nevertheless, the keyboard offers a great typing experience thanks to its decent key travel.
Moreover, below the keyboard, there is a touchpad neatly placed in the middle. This touchpad is pretty big with integrated click buttons on its lower part.
Unfortunately, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA’s touchpad does not support any multi-touch gestures – not even two-finger scrolling. On a positive note, the surface of the touchpad is very smooth and accurate.
Therefore, navigation should be very easy and compelling.
Moving on, ASUS kept things minimal with the ASUS EeeBook X205TA when it come to the port selection. Specifically, the laptop features only one USB 2.0 port and a microSD reader on the left side.
On the right side, however, you will find another USB 2.0 port and a micro HDMI port. Thus, the laptop lacks essential ports like Ethernet and Thunderbolt.
I guess the reason why the laptop features such a minimal amount of port is due to its compact size and weight. To give more details, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA measures just 286 x 193.3 x 17.5 mm and weighs only 980 g.
Comparatively, this laptop is way slimmer and lighter than most of its competitors. For example, it is slimmer than the HP Stream 11, which measures 304.8 x 205.7 x 19.81 and weighs 1242.8 g.
Overall, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA is a very stylish portable laptop that tops the chart when placed side by side with laptops in its category. Therefore, I will be rating the laptop an eight out of ten in this section.
ASUS EeeBook X205TA: Processor (CPU) Performance
For the processor, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA employs an Intel Bay Trail-T Z3735 processor. This processor offers a base frequency of 1.33 GHz and a maximum frequency of 1.83 GHz
In addition to that, this Intel Trail-T Z3735 CPU is a quad-core processor that comes with 2 MB cache memory. Moreover, the processor is a power-efficient quad-core processor most suitable for mini/netbook laptops.
Therefore, with this processor, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA should be able to handle most computing tasks with ease.
In other to prove the performance of the laptop with this processor, I carried out some thorough research. Thankfully, I was able to find a Cinebench R10 benchmark test result based on the laptop’s processor performance.
It is important to note that this benchmark test result was gotten from notebookcheck.net. Moreover, the Cinebench R10 is a benchmark test tool that measures a computer’s overall processor performance.
It does this by testing the cores of the computer’s processor. Therefore, the benchmark test generates two test results – the single-core result and the multi-core result.
Moreover, the higher the score on each test result, the better the performance of the computer. So, based on the Cinebench R10 benchmark test result, the ASUS EeeBook scored 813 points in the single-core test.
In the multi-core test, on the other hand, the laptop scored 2867 points. These scores are actually very impressive.
Also, the scores are pretty much better than the scores gotten by one of the laptop’s closest competitors, the Acer Aspire Switch 10. To give more details, the Acer Aspire Switch 10 scored 774 points and 2424 points in the single-core test and multi-core test respectively.
In conclusion, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA offers a capable power-efficient quad-core processor. Also, with this processor, the laptop performs better than one of its competitors on a processor benchmark test.
Therefore, to end this processor review section, I will rate the ASUS EeeBook X205TA an eight out of ten.
ASUS EeeBook X205TA: Memory (RAM) Performance
In terms of memory, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA comes with a standard memory of 2 GB. Moreover, this 2 GB RAM is the maximum RAM that the laptop supports.
Besides that, the laptop features only a single RAM slot. Regrettably, what all this means is that memory upgradability is impossible on this laptop.
Nevertheless, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA with 2 GB should still be able to keep things smooth during operations. Moreover, with 2 GB, the laptop should be able to perform light multitasking.
Specifically, with 2 GB, this laptop can juggle between six Chrome tabs and two YouTube streaming videos without glitching.
To further prove the memory performance of this laptop, I will now share the PCMark 8 benchmark result. This PCMark 8 benchmark is a test that measures the performance of a computer when performing office-related tasks like word processing.
Also, on this benchmark test, the higher the score, the better the computer’s performance.
That said, based on the PCMark 8 benchmark test results, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA scored 1142 points, which is practically high. Moreover, when compared to the Acer Aspire E3-111-C6LG, ASUS EeeBook X205TA came up top.
To give more details, according to the same PCMark 8 benchmark result, the Acer Aspire E3-111-C6LG scored 1104 points.
Overall, having a non-upgradable 2 GB RAM is a major con of this laptop. However, the laptop still performed slightly better than one of its close competitors.
Hence, I will be rating the ASUS EeeBook X205TA a seven out of ten in this memory review section.
ASUS EeeBook X205TA: Storage Options and Performance
The ASUS EeeBook X205TA comes standard with an eMMC storage drive and a max storage capacity of 128 GB. If you’re wondering, eMMC is a type of storage also known as the embedded multi-media card.
Compared to other storage systems like HDD and SSD, eMMC storage offers lower storage capacities. Talking about storage capacity, I believe the max storage capacity of 128 GB won’t suffice for most users.
Thankfully, the laptop comes with an SD card reader for storage expansion.
That said, to measure the performance of the ASUS EeeBook X205’s eMMC storage, I did some digging on the internet. During my digging (research), I was able to get hold of a CrystalDiskMark benchmark test result which is related to the laptop’s storage performance.
Briefly, CrystalDiskMark is a benchmark that determines the speed of a computer’s storage. It does this by measuring the read and write speed of the computer’s storage drive.
In case you are wondering, read speed simply means how long it takes for a computer’s storage to open a file. Write speed, on the other hand, indicates how long it takes to store a file on the storage.
It is important to note that on the CrystalDiskMark test, the higher the read/write speed, the faster the computer’s storage. On that note, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA’s eMMC storage drive has a sequential read speed of 120 MBps based on the test results.
Also, according to the same result, the laptop’s storage has a sequential write speed of 46.54 MBps. In comparison, the Acer Aspire E3-111-C6LG has both a sequential read speed and sequential write speed of 103 MBps.
This basically means the Acer Aspire E3-111-C6LG has a better sequential write speed than the ASUS EeeBook X205TA. However, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA has a faster sequential read speed than the Acer Aspire E3-111-C6LG.
All things considered, I will be rating the ASUS Eeebook X205TA a seven out of ten in this storage review section.
ASUS EeeBook X205TA: Graphics Card Performance
For the graphics card, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA features Intel HD Graphics. This graphics card offers a base frequency of 311 MHz and a maximum frequency of 646 MHz.
Furthermore, the Intel HD Graphics is an integrated graphics card, which means that it relies on the laptop’s memory to carry out graphics-related tasks. Therefore, you should not expect the ASUS EeeBook X205TA to deliver excellent performance when performing graphics-related tasks like video editing and gaming.
As a result, you are better off using the laptop to perform less-graphics demanding tasks and playing basic games like 3D Chess and Candy Crush.
Moving on, to further prove the graphics capability of this laptop, I will now share the 3DMark benchmark results. To clarify, 3DMark is a benchmark tool that measures how a computer can render graphics in 3D and 2D.
Based on this benchmark test result that I got from notebookcheck.net, I noticed the laptop performed below its competitors. Specifically, the laptop scored 212 points while one of its closest competitors, the Acer Aspire E3-111-C6LG scored 264 points.
Moreover, it is very crucial to mention that on the 3DMark benchmark test, the higher the score, the better the performance.
Based on all this information above, it is ideal to say that the ASUS EeeBook X205TA doesn’t have much to offer when it comes to the graphics department. Hence, I will be rating the laptop a six out of ten in this graphics card performance review section.
ASUS EeeBook X205TA: Battery Life and Performance
When it comes to the battery department, ASUS decided to leave its competitor breathless. Specifically, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA employs a 38 WHrs Polymer battery.
According to ASUS claims, this 38 WHrs Polymer laptop battery can last up to 12 hours. Could this be true?
Well, rather than guessing, I carried out my own research to determine the laptop’s real battery life. Based on my findings, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA can last 19 hours and 33 minutes when left idle with minimum brightness.
Moreover, on continuous usage and maximum brightness, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA will be able to last about 9 hours. These battery lives are really impressive and better than the ones of the Acer Aspire E3-111-C6LG.
To give more details, the Acer Aspire E3-111-C6LG can only last 7 hours when left idle with minimum brightness. Also, when used continuously and at maximum brightness, the laptop can only 4 hours.
In conclusion, the ASUS EeeBook X205TA offers a battery life that will be hard to beat for laptops in its price range and category. Hence, I strongly believe the ASUS EeeBook X205TA deserves a nine out of ten in this battery review section.
